That's part of it. My parents had wildly inappropriate notions of movies suitable for young children. You wouldn't believe how young I was when I saw Aliens for the first (and last) time.

I will stick to Disney cartoons and Stargate rewatches.

Alien is good. Aliens (the sequel) is better. I'm more of an action flick chick than a suspense lover. I mean, I like suspense, but as a kid Alien was pretty boring, while Aliens blew my socks off. Yay for James Cameron! My order of Alien preferences is Aliens, Alien, Alien Resurrection (despite the fact that Wynona Rider is in it), and then Alien 3 as the least preferred. I typically only watch Alien 3 when I'm marathoning the series.

I don't count the AVPs as part of the Alien franchise. I mean, I do because they're kind of linked, but they don't get rated in comparison to the actual Alien series.

And to bring this back on topic, I think Jack would be more a Predator fan, while Sam goes for the original Alien. I think she would enjoy the suspense of it. Jack would like the big explosions of Predator.

        What do you guys think?

You should, its a good movie, Sigourney Weaver is fabulous as Ripley. The second one is good too, definitely put them on your must watch list.
Don't get it right, get it written - Unknown, they haven't decided who said it first

            I might.

Unfortunately, I've lost WhyteWhytch as a beta reader for Shadow Games, and I'm getting ideas in my head concerning how to tie in the fourth season.

I agree with that order, I've not seen the AVP's. I have to praise James Cameron too, it was only recently I realised how much of his stuff I have in my dvd collection. Have you seen Prometheus? I thought it was a good tie in with lots of interesting questions. If I recall correctly its not a prequel but the start of another story that takes place in a different galaxy, the aliens are 'cousins' of the original Aliens.

Having not seen Predator I can't comment but I think Sam would like the suspense and the challenge of working out why everything is happening.

I've seen Prometheus, and if nothing else it was an excellent study in humanity's overbearing sense of entitlement and overwhelming stupidity. I didn't enjoy it. And yes, it is a prequel. Ridley Scott says it isn't, but it clearly is.

Gah. Sorry. It's another movie that gets under my skin.

Thanks for the review nei. Excellent job!

I really enjoy this episode. It's actually one of my favorite of Season 3. I think of it as a team episode although it revolves around Daniel and his plight we see so much great team interaction, including Hammond and Janet. This is a big part of what I love about Stargate.

On the subject of phase shifting or being transported to other dimensions, Teal’c ‘feels’ something when Daniel attempts to communicate, and Sam, feels a chill when Daniel wonders if he is dead. These incidents do not fit with the future presentation of the way multiple dimensions interact with each other. When Sam and Cam are trapped in season 9 no one can sense they are there. The bugs in season 6 were a special case as their genetic make-up allowed them to interact with matter in another space dimension – something we see no other living creature do (excluding the interaction with Merlin’s ‘cloak’ which was designed specifically for that purpose).
You are never going to get good answers about phase shifting, but I have some of my own theories. I think each of these interdimensional devices were designed by different races, for various purposes so they all work differently and have differing effects so incongruities don't bother me here. I also think how Daniel interacts with environment is based on his own perceptions. He walks through doors, walls, etc. because he chooses to. He stands on the floor and sits on cabinets because he expects to. Later we see him sitting up on top of some cabinets in the control room. He obviously figured out he can place himself wherever he wants to be with respect to his environment. That satisfies me.

I think the radiation and being in the cavern when the transdimentional teleportation process occurred has an effect on all of them. Daniel was looking directly into the skull and so the transformation for him was all or nearly complete. The others still had a connection to Daniel and perhaps could sense him because they were at the edge of the process and it was interrupted before it had time to envelop them. You notice no one but SG1 senses or feels Daniel's presence. Except Nick, of course, who experienced it himself and was in some way permanently transformed by the experience.

I thought it took Daniel too long to realise Nick could see him. It was obvious in the mental health centre when Nick looked straight at him.
I disagree. Daniel placed himself directly in front of Nick and it really seemed to me Nick was looking right through him. I thought it was a great reveal that only when Nick turns to find Daniel himself and respond to him does Daniel realize Nick has been seeing him all along. Also Nick says he's heard voices and imagined things before. Daniel knows this so he would anticipate that Nick would act strangely compared to the others.

I find Daniel’s commentary rather amusing. It’s a new insight into his character; we get to hear his internal thoughts. He has obviously learnt his sarcasm from Jack – something he has perfected by season 9.

As always Daniel has his irritating moments, he is still very naïve and his excitement over the discovery shows tremendously. His desire to explore and discover puts precedence over safety and potential health risks, again. Yet again, Jack has to bring him down to earth – in a way only Jack can. Later, Daniel jumps to the worst possible conclusion, that he’s dead, whines when he realises no one can see him, and plays the injured party over his fall out with his grandfather, when by all accounts he was just as much to blame. Then when his grandfather tries to apologise, he is flippant. Nick has the grace to apologise to Daniel when he finds out he was right about the pyramids, but Daniel fails to reciprocate.
I really don't understand all the Daniel hate going on in this thread lately. Daniel can be excitable because the universe and its mysteries hold so much fascination for him. I don't think he was naïve or lacked concern for the safety of himself or others. Sam was just as excited to see this place and learn about the leptons and neutrinos. And seeing Sam and Daniel's enthusiasm Jack jumped on board.

I think Daniel acted in a very calm and reasoned manner throughout his entire ordeal and I enjoyed watching him interact with the other characters when he couldn't actually interact with them.

Overall, this isn’t one of the worst Daniel centric episodes. The culture and history, combined with the comedy keep the episode afloat. It could easily have become a ‘woe me’ whine fest. It is well written and structured, with Brad Wright at the helm it’s no wonder. It contains all the essential elements that make up a good Stargate episode, mystery, tension, comedy and in-jokes.
Again, why do we have to paint everything involved with Daniel in a negative light?

This was a good episode and I think really everyone shines here. I do, however, have to give special props to Teal'c who is just masterful in this episode. He sees a problem with the skull so he uses his good ol' standby tatic, just zat it. He defends Janet's expertise and tosses Jack on the bed face down. He convinces Hammond to let him go back to the planet with irrefutable logic.

HAMMOND: And if that thing zaps you to where it sent Dr. Jackson?

Then I will have succeeded in locating him.

I have to wonder what would have happened if it was Jack that got transported. Obviously, Nick wouldn’t have had the same motivation to help but it still could have proved interesting. I wonder what Jack would have got up to? There could definitely been more comedy moments with Jack seeing or hearing things he shouldn’t, and the potential for him to collect a plethora of material to use against Daniel.
The original script called for Jack to be the one transported but RDA didn't want to do it. He thought it was too similar to a McGyver script he had done. At the same time MS was trying to write an SG1 script about a Crystal Skull and Daniel's grandfather. The story team took the two scripts and mashed them together into this episode.

                  The Team:

This episode shows how close the team has become. Teal’c teasing Jack, Jack and Sam sharing looks, the way Jack believes Daniel is in the room straight away when Nick says ‘Jack don’t be such an ass.’ He doesn’t even question it. They know each other so well.

We also see how deeply Hammond cares for his flagship team; the phone call to his granddaughter is a key moment. It reminds us that everyone involved has a vested interest in each other. They are all emotionally attached and it makes the tough decisions in following seasons all the more touching and heartbreaking.
This was the main theme of the episode was having Daniel discover how his team, essentially his family, really felt about him by hearing what they said when they didn't know he was there. I agree that we see a wonderful closeness between all of them.

The closeness between Sam and Jack does stand out at this point; they put slightly less effort into finding Daniel than they have for each other. Daniel’s line ‘What? No working through the night? I’d do it for you.’ says it all. I think this is the first glimpse we have that they both feel more for each other than they should. Previous comments and actions could have been interpreted as flirting but this moment, to me, defines their relationship as being more than friends.
I don't really agree with this statement. Although there's this little comical moment when it looks like they have given up on looking for Daniel for the evening and he's miffed about it later that same evening Nick comes down to the briefing room to let everyone know that he can see Daniel and it's clear Hammond, Janet, and Jack are all continuing to work on ideas. When Sam said good night to Jack she may have gone home, but the radiation seemed to affect her the most and she might have been ordered to rest. I certainly don't think Sam and Jack put their feelings for each other above their concern for Daniel.

I also can't agree that this is our first glimpse or clue into their inappropriate feelings for one another. This to me just seems like a continuation of something that has been on display and building for a long time.

This is the start of the story arc in which they admit to themselves how they feel about the other. Obviously, they have confronted the possibility before, the alternate versions of themselves giving them food for thought, but I don’t think their subconscious actions have set off the shippy radar before now. Also, things are very relaxed between them, they sit close together, share ‘in’ jokes and Sam still openly smiles when he makes her laugh. Their relationship is fresh, warm and light. They know each other well and the elephant is still well outside the room.
I do agree that there's a lightness to their interactions at this point. They haven't had to face some very painful choices and real consequences resulting directly from their feelings, but I do think they aren't just operating on a subconscious level. They know they're flirting and they care about each other. They just haven't experienced the harm in it yet.

                  Trivia

This is the first episode where the alien planet is entirely CGS.

The cast had trouble keeping a straight face during some of Michael’s commentary lines. Their characters weren’t supposed to be able to see him but they couldn’t help but react.
I think the CGI still had a ways to go at this point. There were lots of times when it really didn't look very good.

I will say that I very much enjoyed the music in this episode. The theme for the giant aliens (that just has such a nice ring to it) was great. It expressed the mystery, wonder and immensity of this race and their achievements.

I would have thought that at some point the staff would say they couldn't do anything more for him and since he was no threat to anyone, he could certainly take care of himself.

If Nick checked himself in he could theoretically leave at any time. We don't know much about his condition except that he had a psychotic break. From what we see of Nick and what he reveals of his experience (hearing voices, overwhelming obsession with his theories) it's possible that the doctors may have determined that while he was high functioning in a controlled environment he might not be able to handle day to day reality. From the look of the facility he was in I would guess it was a therapeutic residential care home that provided mental health care and long-term convalescence.

I agree that this Daniel-centric episode is one of the enjoyable ones, probably because we get to see so much interaction between the other three. I also love that glimpse of Hammond's view of SG-1 when he's on the phone with his granddaughter.
I like that moment too. I think it shows a very gentle, personable side of Hammond both in his family life and with regard to SG1.

One thing that bothers me about this episode is that Nick obviously has mental health issues (well, not really since he turned out to be right but whatever) and yet in Legacy they imply there aren't any such issues in Daniel's family history by saying there's no schizophrenia there. Granted, Janet could have been specifically talking about schizophrenia (even though I'm not convinced that was the actual diagnosis but then we've made lots of progress with mental health disorders since that episode was written) but even then an indication of whatever it is they thought Nick was suffering from would have been worth a mention, especially with the vagueness of Daniel's condition in that episode.
The practical answer to this is that MS hadn't made it up yet. In story, I wonder if the fact that Nick's condition was not genetic and a voluntary commitment meant that Janet discounted it and didn't not feel it necessary to mention it.

I've always thought it was a shame there was never a follow-up of this episode or at least a reference to Daniel's grandfather (especially in light of how many times Daniel "died") and how he was doing and if they ever got any useful information from the giant aliens or if Nick was more or less simply vacationing there.
I would very much liked to see more of the giant aliens and Nick. I do believe some episode, I think in Season 9, Daniel references Nick's research and notes, suggesting that he had been back, spoken with Nick and obtained information from him.

                          Synopsis:

Two Russian submariners go to investigate a pressure alarm and find a replicator in their torpedo bay. It attacks and kills them.

Daniel gets poked and prodded by Janet because he's just had an emergency appendectomy. She tells him to take it easy but he jumps up and runs off when there's an un-scheduled off-world activation, hoping it's SG-1 returned from the planet they've been stranded on for a week. Teal'c returns with a beard, Sam and Jack seem... happy.

Sam's studying Replicator blocks in her lab. Jack invites her fishing again, she declines but just as he leaves she gets a phone call from Hammond telling her to stop Jack from leaving - Major Davis is on his way ergo big emergency and Jack's no longer going fishing.

The Americans intercept a mayday call from the Russian sub being attacked by a mechanical spider. The crew is all dead. Jack wants to blow it up, Sam argues that might not work. Major Davis is sympathetic but needs another option besides a nuke. Jack suggests guns, Sam agrees it could work.

Thor arrives through the Stargate and says he owes SG-1 a debt of gratitude but cannot help them with the replicator on the submarine. He instead asks for their help as human projectile weapons have been the only things able to kill the bugs. He needs someone with "simple" thinking - Sam volunteers, Jack doesn't think she's dumb enough. Hammond sends her anyway.

Jack leads a team of 4, including Teal'c, to destroy the Replicators on the submarine. Jack mentions he has an insane aversion to bugs just before he goes in. On the Asgard home world, Sam learns of the existence of "The O'Neill", a fancy new ship better than any other the Asgard have at present. It isn't yet complete. Thor says his entire race is counting on Sam's "stupid" ideas to save them. No pressure, then!

Back on Earth, Jack and his team find lots of Replicators on the submarine, including a huge "Queen" bug. Teal'c and Stevens get attacked and all the video feeds go dead. Stevens gets killed by the Replicators.

Meanwhile, Thor teaches Sam how the Replicators work but he won't explain what the technical details are to Sam, saying she needs to understand it in her own terms to think outside the box. He gives her a virtual Replicator to run simulations.

Janet patches up Teal'c and Jack says the only way to get rid of the bugs at this point is to blow the sub up. Janet finds a rusted Replicator block in Teal'c's neck. Back with Thor, Sam gets distracted worrying about SG-1. Thor tells her Jack is very capable of getting the job done and promises that he will help Earth as soon as the Replicators have been stopped from destroying the Asgard home world. He offers Sam food that looks like play doh shapes. Sam eats a yellow one then spits it out in disgust. They get a warning message that several Asgard ships have been taken over by Replicators.

Daniel realises that if the bugs on the submarine are vulnerable to the sea water, blowing it up may result in the original bug surviving. Time for plan C. They discover that the original bug is part of the "Queen" bug so they set up a diversion by blowing up a small charge to get the mini bugs away from the Queen.

Sam notices the bugs are flying the Asgard ships slowly and Thor tells her to fly at hyper speed, they need all the generator power. Whilst replicating, they're using some of the energy so Sam surmises they won't have weapons or shields either. They're only not attacking Thor's ship at present because it poses no threat and is technologically inferior to the ships they currently occupy. Just as Jack and Teal'c board the submarine, it dives.

Thor realises that Sam is tired and says that's one advantage the Replicators have over biological life forms. Sam realises they still have to eat and they are what they eat. Sam suggests they use the O'Neill to lead the Replicators away at hyper speed because the bugs will be attracted to its hull made from a new, super-strong alloy of naquadah, trinium and carbon. They will then blow up the O'Neill in order to destroy the Replicator-infested ships. Thor refuses as it's too big a risk if the Replicators catch up with the O'Neill before they are able to blow it. Sam argues her case and Thor eventually agrees to the plan.

Jack and Teal'c attack the Queen bug but the bugs try to seal them in by building walls across the exits. They're trapped. Jack orders Daniel and Major Davis to blow the sub with them inside before they get eaten alive by the bugs.

Thor launches the O'Neill and the bugs chase it. They blow up the ship, destroying all the Replicator ships. Sam hugs Thor. Just as the torpedoes hit the sub, Sam and Thor beam them out. An ecstatic Daniel can't get his words out to explain why Jack and Teal'c are ok to Davis. On board the Asgard ship, Sam tells Jack about the O'Neill but then informs him that they had to destroy it to beat the Replicators. Jack pouts. Thor says that, one day, once the Replicators are defeated for good, the Asgard will get rid of the Goa'uld. Jack offers to take Thor fishing and Sam and Teal'c look unimpressed just as Thor beams them back to Earth.

                            Review:

I love this episode, it's a damn near perfect episode for me. We get Hammond making jokes, Janet helping out, Major Davis getting emotionally involved with SG-1 (I always had a soft spot for Major Davis), Sgt Siler getting out of the SGC, Thor and some great team and S/J moments.

The "Red Shirt" syndrome which affects one of the two guys on the team we don't know was a tad predictable and pointless in my opinion but, hey, they maybe ran a few minutes short that week.

Daniel's emotional rollercoaster as he decides whether to blow the sub and his subsequent joy at Teal'c and Jack surviving is infectious. Kudos to Michael for his acting here.

Other moments of note include Jack's comment that he'd rather be blown up than eaten by bugs. I found that quite moving that he asked Daniel to kill him to save him the pain. Major Davis, as always, is delightful. He's incredibly passionate in his pleas to SG-1 to give him a viable plan that he and the Pentagon can work with; he, unlike most of the Pentagon windbags, knows it's a big ask but he clearly has faith in their abilities to come up with the goods. He's also clearly distressed at the thought of being ordered to kill O'Neill and Teal'c. His relief at the end is palpable, just as it is in 'Tangent'.

I also felt that Teal'c was a little neglected script-wise. Rob Cooper needs to work on that but he did give us some good shippy bits and comedy so he didn't do too badly.

The Russian at the start translates as "What was that noise?" "Maybe it's the bug from last week's episode!" Lol.

Sam hugging Thor is just too cute!

Mention must also be made of our beloved Shipper director, Mr Martin Wood. He did an excellent job with capturing the little nuances of the comedy and the actors' expressions in Small Victories. The cast seemed to really enjoy this one.

                            S/J moments:

When Hammond notes that the Asgard left them stranded on the planet, Sam glances at Jack and rather smugly says that "We were fine...Sir" (- note the suggestive pause before she adds the 'Sir'. Makes me think maybe the 'Sir-ing' had been let slide a little in the previous few days ). She then gives Jack a "look" as he leaves for his shower. (*nudgenudgewinkwink* something happened on that planet!)

Sam's studying a Replicator piece under a magnifying glass. Jack interrupts her by peering through it and he (and we) are treated to one of Sam's megawatt smiles and a very definite laugh. There's another fishing invitation ("Still going fishing?" "Yup! Still staying here?" "Yes, Sir. I think I've had enough relaxation for a while" *Insert Jack smirk here*). They're flirting big-time, if this were any other show they probably would've been making out on the desk by the end of the scene.

Sam gets a fine view of Jack "walking out the door" (because you know she was admiring the view *guttersplash*)

There's a lot of gutter in those looks during the fishing conversation which makes me wonder what exactly happened while they were stranded on that planet for a whole week.

(Rachel500 does a pretty good attempt at describing what might've happened in canon in her 'Aftershocks' series)

Sam and Jack sit pretty close together during the meeting with Davis and both argue in tandem heatedly with him.

When Sam goes with Thor, Jack tells Sam to have fun. She sings "yasureyabetcha!" At him just as he did when leaving for his fishing trip. My only disappointment was that she misses off the 'snookums' bit but then she was in front of Hammond!

Sam's distracted from her work worrying about Earth. Funny how Thor directly relates her being worried to her thinking about Jack (I think we have another shipper on our team lol!)

When Sam and Thor beam Jack and Teal'c aboard, Sam can't stop smiling her megawatt smiles at Jack.

Just a note, the Gateworld character development for this episode notes that Sam and Jack's relationship changes this episode and that she is free to show how much she enjoys him... In the words of Jack O'Neill, "if only!".

Ship Rating: and a half out of 5
                            Overall Rating: 4/5

Sorry. That's my inner anthropologist showing. I really disliked the ending, and that Shia dude overstayed his welcome. I prefer SG-1's episode much more than I enjoyed that Indy movie.
I was happy that Indy and Marion got together officially, unlike another couple
