    16x03 "The Forerunners"
Synopsis: A mission to a world locked out of the database on Heliopolis by the Nox reveals ancient secrets that the original Alliance of Great Races did everything possible to keep hidden.
    Spoiler:
On a planet dominated by rolling white and gold deserts, a stargate sits inactive in a sand dune, itself half-buried by the sheer amount of the stuff surrounding it. Its DHD is nowhere to be seen, probably likewise covered by the coating of sand, and it looks as though the terrain just goes on forever in all directions without changing. If there were ever a stereotypical barren world, this would most likely be it.

After a moment, the stargate suddenly begins its inbound traveler sequence, all seven needed chevrons flashing orange before an unstable vortex flushes out, vaporizing all the sand in the way and revealing what must have once been the stone platform that kept the portal above the dunes surrounding it. Nothing happens for a long moment, then a M.A.L.P. rolls through the puddle and stops, scanning the atmosphere and sending back the results to Earth. In the new ISGC's control room, Talbot and SG-1 look up at the monitor and listen to the gate technician's analysis of the readouts, which indicate a barely-habitable planet with an extreme arid environment; essentially, the biggest desert in the galaxy since Abydos was destroy ("Full Circle"). According to the database on Heliopolis, this planet was visited by an Ancient exploratory mission in the days after their arrival in the Milky Way, but immediately after, it was locked out of the network altogether. Only with the passing of the Nox, and the subsequent transfer of all relevant archive data to the younger races, have they stumbled upon the entry, and it certainly merits a look.

Looking over the endless desert, Daniel asks if it might have been locked out for good reason, but his voice seems to be lost in the excitement of what may have been left behind from the very first days of the old Alliance. Talbot admits that despite her own concurring concerns, the United Nations, as well as their allies, want it checked out, and SG-1 is to gear up and head out on a recon run as soon as they're finished going over the M.A.L.P. telemetry. Should they run into anything of interest, they can just dial back home for assistance, but there's a lot of expectation riding on this one. Staring purposefully down at the gate, Talbot tells the team to make it count.

A short time later, SG-1 emerges on P3X-291, and Vala immediately regrets not bringing an extra bottle of sunscreen. Mitchell just rolls his eyes and slides on a pair of sunglasses, looking around the area and wondering where they should go from here. As the stargate shuts down behind them, Eaton goes over to the M.A.L.P. and pulls up its preliminary scan of the region directly around them, pointing out that there appears to be some strange rock formations or something a couple of miles to the southwest. Slinging his gun around his shoulder, Cameron supposes they should go investigate those then, since there doesn't seem to be much else here to look at. Not so sure, Daniel reminds him that the Ancients deemed this planet dangerous for a reason, and Mitchell promises that if they run into anything scary enough to frighten an Ancient, they'll run back to the gate. Until then, however, they came here to explore, and that's what they're going to do.

Back on Earth, Talbot is just leaving the control room when Dr. Caroline Lam arrives, shouting for the base commander to wait for her and jogging up to talk. Checking her watch, Danielle says she only has a few minutes, but Lam only needs that much of her time anyway, if less. For the past several months, they've been studying the various types of bioweapons the Aschen have been using to wipe out Alliance-affiliated worlds, and with the Venii now sharing their own intelligence with them ("Hyperion"), they've gained access to information on the newest virus in the Confederation arsenal; an organism capable of reforming its own DNA on the go to infect any specific lifeform it needs to. Essentially, it appears that they've taken the concept and building blocks of Earth's own Alpha One weapon ("Xenocide") and refined it far beyond the ISGC's capabilities, creating something that could distinguish between humans based on something as specific as hair color.

Needless to say, the implications of this are massive, and Lam wants authorization to send a survey team to the Venii colony recently wiped out by the strain. Hopefully, they'd be able to collect remaining traces of the virus in the colony's water table, giving them a more-accessible way to study its construction and effects. Putting in the stipulation that she first check with the Venii representative on Heliopolis to avoid any diplomatic infringement, Talbot OKs the mission, but advises Caroline to tread carefully here. After all, the Aschen aren't stupid, and it's likely that if they left any traces of their attack, there's a reason for it. Promising to take every precaution necessary, Lam thanks her for the approval and leaves to assemble a team, and Talbot heads toward her office, already dreading the stack of personnel reports waiting there.

On the desert planet, SG-1 is approaching the target site a few miles from the stargate, and the sun looks to be approaching its peak for the day. Wiping a small puddle of sweat from her brow, Eaton mutters that this is ridiculous and strips off her jacket, tying it around her waist and adjusting her vest over her tank top. Looking her over approvingly, Mitchell remarks that he's beginning to like how often she does that ("The Ragged Edge"). In response, Rebbecca starts to move toward him, her arm already coming up, but Daniel comes between them, pointing to something rising over the next dune. The team climbs up the last few feet of sand and looks out to see what he means, and they're all struck by what lies before them; these aren't just stones jutting up from the desert, they're giant towers that have sunk into the swirling surface after eons at rest. The buildings are intricately carved from some slightly-shimmering metal, and Vala remarks that she's never seen anything quite like them before.

Pulling out a pair of binoculars, Mitchell tries to figure out where a likely entrance to the closest tower might be, but he can't see any obvious door around ground level. Taking out her own binoculars, Eaton points out that if these things used to be much taller and have gradually been submerged in the sand, any entryway at "ground" level is probably quite a ways underground by now. Admitting that that sounds about right, Cameron turns to the other two and asks if they have any bright ideas on how to investigate further. Jackson just shrugs, but Vala has a thought, and tells Mitchell to just follow her lead.

Shortly afterward, the team is at the bottom of the nearest structure, combing around its side. Vala explains that any sentient race that bothered to build something like this would probably like some light, so there are bound to be windows or some sort of opening somewhere. And if they were ever as tall as they suspect, then most-likely there will hangers or bays higher up, for atmospheric craft to dock without needing to descend much. And sure enough, a few more minutes of walking brings them to a massive set of metal doors, one of which appears to have been caught and forced open by a small rock spire jutting up next to the sinking tower. Gesturing at the opening, Vala asks the others what they would do without out, but Mitchell just shoves her in first and leads the others up into the structure. As they clamber up out of the hot sun, however, they fail to notice a few of the other towers suddenly flash to life, thousands of lights all along their superstructures brightening after their completed period of inactivity.

Inside, everyone flips on their flashlights to get a better look around, seeing that this was once, as Vala guessed, a hanger of sorts, though the only signs of the ships that flew in and out are piles of scrap metal in the corners, twisted and broken. Going over to one of the torn-off pieces, Eaton notes that the metal doesn't look rusted, and nor do the towers themselves, for that matter. Whatever material was put into construction here, it's survived better than anything else they've come across in an atmosphere. After all, even Lantean buildings eventually gave in to the elements (SGA: "The Tower"). Whatever the case, Mitchell suggests they try and find a computer interface, so they can find out what this planet was once used for, and they all set out down the closest hallway.

Meanwhile, Talbot is wishing Dr. Lam's hastily-assembled survey team good luck, as they depart through the ISGC stargate for the recently-abandoned Venii colony struck by the Aschen. Watching from the second-floor balcony, Danielle and Caroline wait until the wormhole has dissipated, then turn down the hallway to chat a bit. Lam is personally hoping that they can devise a biological weapon of their own to neutralize the Confederation's tactics, and the Tok'ra have offered their services in her work if they retrieve the necessary samples. Talbot agrees that it would certainly be a great relief to be able to just dial up an infected planet, send through a few vials, and go home knowing the entire population would be safe, but it still sounds a little too much like fantasy. Taking her superior's hands in her own, Lam promises that this will work, then leaves for her lab.

Light-years away, on P3X-291, SG-1 is making their way down a hallway in one of the sunken towers, still trying to find some sort of access panel. Suddenly, however, the entire building begins to shake, and they are thrown to the floor. Outside, the towers begin to drop deeper into the sand, but not gradually, like they must have over the past few thousand years. This time around, they're plunging down quite rapidly, and after only a few seconds, they disappear under the dunes, leaving no sign that they were ever there at all. Inside, Mitchell shouts that maybe they stumbled onto some kind of trap. Whatever the case, they need to find a way out of here, and they rush back down the way they came, hoping to get out before they're miles underground. But they arrive at the entry to the hanger to find it rapidly filling with sand, the caught metal door having been torn off by the rock spire. With the desert simply spilling in around them, they have no place to go but deeper into the tower, and without much of a choice in the matter, they retreat back down the hall.

After a few frantic minutes of running, the team pauses to catch their breath in an alcove, and Daniel mutters that it would be just their luck to have this happen on the day they visit. Glancing over at him, Eaton points out that their being here at all could be why this is happening; for all they know, the tower could have detected lifeforms and activated some subroutine. Sighing, Vala asks what possible purpose a program could have for sinking a building into the sand, and guesses that this is some secret Der'kal trap that they've sprung, set up to drag them to their death here in the middle of nowhere. After no one jumps to second her thought, however, she reluctantly admits that Rebbecca's idea may be the slightly more-logical one.

(More of "The Forerunners," see previous post for beginning and next post for end.)

      Spoiler:
Just then, there's a sudden clang from behind, and the team spins around to see a hologram projector extruding from the wall, a fuzzy image slowly coming into focus. It doesn't appear to be a projection of an actual living thing, but more like an abstract representation, not unlike the pulsing lines human computers use to illustrate sound waves. Vala leans close to Daniel and whispers, "Der'kal trap, right?", to which he has to roll his eyes, even with the gravity of their situation. Flashing a little, the hologram begins emitting a harsh grating noise, and everyone clutches at their ears. After a moment, it stops, sits silent, and then tries again, this time blaring what sounds like elephant roars. When that gets no response, the hologram switches to something barely audible at all, and continues like this while SG-1 looks on, confused.

Listening closely, Daniel says that he thinks the hologram is cycling through various languages in its database to try and communicate with them. It probably doesn't have English, but maybe it has something they can decipher all the same. Saying that it actually sounds like a feasible assessment of the situation, Eaton asks him how he came up with that so fast, and Jackson nonchalantly replies that he saw something similar in a Star Wars game once. Before any of the others can inquire further, though, Jackson holds up a hand, listening intently at the new sounds the hologram is producing, ones that actually seem familiar. Talking back, he mutters something in the same language, and the hologram glows green before fading out for a moment.

Impressed, Mitchell asks what just happened, and Daniel answers that the hologram was using a very archaic form of Ancient, probably picked up when the explorers the newly-arrived Alterans sent to this planet millions of years ago arrived. It's not a very well-understood variant, but he knows enough to get by, and he grasped enough to get that the machine was asking what SG-1's purpose in being here was. He responded with the truth, saying they are peaceful explorers looking to open a dialogue between their world and those who built this structure, and the hologram asked him to wait. Seeing as they don't have a choice in the matter, he promised that they would.

Now the hologram comes back to life, and it and Daniel exchange a few more lines. Watching from the sidelines, Vala remarks that it's nice to run into a super-advanced alien race that doesn't immediately try to kill them for once, and Eaton tells her to shush before she jinxes them. But Daniel's expression is quickly turning into one of confusion, and he asks one final question of the hologram before it abruptly fizzles out. Looking at the others curiously, he says that they were being asked to submit "samples" to the "archives," and when he asked for further clarification, the interface simply shut down.

Fidgeting with his weapon, Mitchell suggests that they double back and try to find another way out of the tower. He doesn't like what Daniel translated, and it's possible that even if their part of the structure has sunk into the sand, a higher part could still be above ground. Vala and Eaton nod in agreement, also finding the stale and gloomy interior of the alien building more than a little frightening, and the team prepares to head out. As soon as they step away from the hologram interface, however, a blast door slams shut in front of them. Tapping on the metal barrier, Eaton remarks that this can't be good, then jumps when two panels on the wall retract, revealing what look like robots stored inside. Their eyes snap open, flashing red, and they pry themselves out of their storage cylinders. Roughly as tall as a human but walking on three "legs," each robot has four arms which extend from within their torso, and blades flip out from their wrists. The insectile-looking droids only take a moment to size up SG-1, then lunge forward with their miniature swords at the ready.

Pulling Rebbecca back in time to save her life, Mitchell fires his P90 right into the face of one of the robots, but it doesn't seem to do anything; the bullets just bounce off and fall to the ground, unable to pierce whatever armor protects these things. The second one leaps at Vala, but she twists around, narrowly avoiding a blade, and kicks it into the wall, riddling its ineffective back with bullets in the process. Deflecting the first droid's blade arm, Daniel shouts that they really should get out of here, but Eaton points out (while bashing the same droid's "face" with her P90) that the hallway on both sides has been sealed.

To that end, Mitchell tosses Vala a pack of C4 and yells at her to stick it to the closest blast door, ignoring the bewildered looks everyone gives him as he does so. Knowing that the only alternative is being butchered anyway, she does as he asks, making sure to lodge the detonator on top before jumping away to keep from being sliced in half. Cameron pulls out the detonator, kicks the closest droid into its fellow so they tumble back onto the explosive, and shouts for everyone to get down. Then, without a moment's hesitation, he ducks his head and thumbs the switch. The C4 explodes spectacularly, but thanks to the incredibly-tough armor of the droids, they contain most of the blast. In the process of doing so, they're completely twisted and mangled into useless chunks of metal, but at least SG-1 doesn't die the horrible death from a close-range fireball they otherwise would.

Picking herself up, Eaton coughs and says that that was the stupidest, most-reckless thing she's ever seen, but she has to admit that it worked. The droids seem to be "dead," and there's a hole just large enough for a human to slip through in the blast door. Taking one final look at the defunct hologram projector, Jackson suggests they find a more open place to sit and discuss their options, and Mitchell gladly leads them out of the area as quickly as possible.

Eventually, the team ends up back in the sand-filled hanger they entered from, and they gratefully collapse against one of the walls to rest while they try and figure out how to escape the buried tower. Vala suggests they try and reach the top, using their remaining C4 to blast through any more obstacles, but Mitchell points out that if they're too far done to get out that way, they'll have wasted all their explosive for nothing. Daniel says that they could always find another hologram terminal and ask why the droids attacked them, but no one else seems to find that idea appealing at all.

Meanwhile, Col. Carter is above Earth on the bridge of the MBP-305 Jupiter, overseeing a reallocation of fleet resources. Following the Fall of Earth ("Star By Star"), a great many F-302s and their bomber cousins were forced to make emergency landings across the globe when their carriers jumped into hyperspace. Ever since they retook the planet, Carter's had her men scavenging all seven continents for the missing craft, and she finally thinks she's found just about all of them. Pilots beamed down to the fighter locations are flying them back into orbit so they can dock with fighter-lacking ships, enabling them to launch more long-range starfighter assaults.

While Sam goes over a checklist with an officer, a message comes through from the ISGC flagged as urgent; there was an attack offworld, and Dr. Lam’s team is evacuating their position through the stargate as they speak. From what little information they have so far, it sounds like the Aschen returned with transport ships to collect any survivors from their attack, and the human team was caught in the crossfire. Lam’s escorts are taking heavy fire as they pull out, but it looks like they’re going to make it home without any major incident. Regardless, Sam thanks the ISGC dispatcher for the update and gives the bridge to a subordinate as she prepares to beam down to the surface for the debriefing.

Back on P3X-291, SG-1 is still in the damaged hanger discussing their options when Vala hears something. She picks up her P90 and flips on its flashlight, aiming it down a hallway, and squints into the dim light. Poking at Mitchell's back, she starts to say that she thinks she sees something, then shouts that she definitely sees something and tackles Cameron to the ground, barely avoiding being sliced in half by a flying sickle. The group turns to see a trio of droids advancing out of the opposite hallway toward them, launching the knives on their wrists like bullets from a gun. Muttering that these old alien races always seem to love creating robots with mutilation toys, Mitchell orders the others back down the corridor they came from, hoping they can lose the droids in the maze of twists and turns.

With knives banging against the walls after them, the foursome retreats into the hall, galloping around corners in an effort to shake off their pursuers. Every so often, Mitchell and Eaton fire off a few rounds at the droids behind them, trying to slow them down just enough so they miss which way SG-1 turns, but each time they are unsuccessful.

They spend a few more minutes frantically trying to outrun the droids, but turn a corner to find a second group of the deadly robots advancing from that direction, as well. Standing back-to-back, SG-1 prepares to go down fighting, but Vala notes what looks like an air duct built into the closest wall. Already guessing what she'll suggest, Eaton begins to point out that they'll be slaughtered if they try and scramble into such a tiny space, but Mitchell decides it offers them a better chance than the hall to survive. Kicking open the vent, he pushes Rebbecca in head-first and dives after, leaving Daniel and Vala to leap inside just as the two groups of droids converge on their position, missing their chance for a quick kill by nanoseconds.

Now the team is sent tumbling through the tubework of the ducts, flying every which way as gravity pulls them deeper and deeper into the tower. Thankfully, the ride only lasts a few minutes, and the four of them eventually slide through a chute that dumps them some place in the bowels of the structure, far from the murderous droids that hunted them on the upper levels. Mitchell picks up his gun from where it slid to and dusts himself off, looking around at the large space they now find themselves in. Behind him, his teammates collect their own equipment, though there have been a few losses; Daniel’s P90 is nowhere to be found, and Eaton seems to have lost her grenades in the wild ride. Everything else seems to be in order, though, and at least they escaped without a fatality.

(End of "The Forerunners," see previous two posts for beginning.)

        Spoiler:
Noticing an odd rumbling sound from nearby, Mitchell leads the others out of the room and onto a catwalk that’s suspended high over an immense chamber stretching far beyond what they can see into the distance. Glancing down, Vala notes with awe that it looks like it’s filled with artifacts from around the galaxy, most of which are unidentifiable even with all of SG-1’s travels around the Milky Way. This isn’t a real planet at all—it’s a mausoleum of relics collected from races past and present. That would explain why the hologram shut off and dispatched droids to capture them once Daniel made it understand that they weren’t Ancients. Being a different, and supposedly undocumented, species, the computer decided it needed them to add to the collection.

Of course, Jackson is quick to point out that they can only speculate, but Mitchell cuts him off before he can even begin to suggest they go find a computer terminal to confirm. If they’re right, the AI will just direct more droids to their location to attack, and if they’re wrong, it’ll just do the same thing but for an unknown reason. Either way, the Alliance of old was right to lock this place out of the database on Heliopolis, given how incredibly old and advanced the people that built this must be. To construct an artificial planet is a feat even the Ancients never seemed to demonstrate, and if this race is still alive… perhaps it’s for the best that they’re left alone.

In any event, they still need to find a way out of here, and with the towers submerged (Eaton guesses they collect sunlight to power the superstructure when not underground) they have no escape. But Vala has an idea, considering what they’re standing above. If these aliens, these “Forerunners,” built this place to serve as a museum for the galaxy’s technology and lifeforms, then it stands to reason that they’d take the most-prominent examples of each species. If that’s the case, then they would have to have at least one stargate somewhere inside, ideally with its accompanying DHD. Given the age of the “planet,” the gate on the surface was probably placed long after the Forerunners became away of the Ancients themselves, so they probably would have had one of the portals taken for storage thousands of years before the second was deposited for exploration by the Alliance. But of course, there’s a snag; in order to find a stargate in here, they’d need to access the central computer for its location… which means alerting the monitoring AI to their location. Without any other option, however, Mitchell admits they have no choice, and the team heads out down the catwalk to check the other rooms for a useable terminal.

On Earth, Talbot and Sam are listening to a member of Dr. Lam’s science team explain how the Aschen attacked them out of nowhere, obliterating one of the Venii government buildings they were working near. Had the colony not already been destroyed, casualties would have been devastating given the number of people who had worked in the administrative compound, and it reinforced all too well that the Aschen weren’t interested in sparing civilians. The team packed up their gear and set out at a dead run for the stargate, but it’s inevitable that some of their equipment was left behind. Luckily, none of it was anything that the Confederation doesn’t already have the know-how to build themselves.

Satisfied, Sam thanks the scientist for her time and dismisses her, asking Lam, who appears noticeably shaken by the experience, if she was able to retrieve the samples she needed for testing. The doctor nods her head, clarifying that she didn’t need much, and that they were able to collect a large enough amount of the bioweapon to analyze. The mission was, on a whole, a success, although now they must deal with the reality that their enemy may very well be able to determine what they’re trying to do… and if that’s the case, it’s only a matter of time before Earth is again in the Confederation’s sights.

On the Forerunner planet, Daniel and Vala have successfully interfaced with a computer bank and are searching the archives for the location of a stargate within the catacombs, but Eaton doesn’t like their position one bit. The terminal is out on the catwalk, incredibly exposed, and although there is a lift now far away, they have no cover in any direction. If the droids attack them while they’re stuck here, there won’t be an opportunity for another ingenious escape plan like before.

Shouting that he’s found it, Daniel brings up the coordinates of a stargate and dialing device buried within the chamber, roughly ten miles to the west. Mitchell looks down toward the lift and says that it seems that it can go in any direction, and if they hurry, they can be on it and away before the droids get here… or they can run now, as Eaton spots one of them clambering down from the ceiling and heading straight for them. They make a break for it and gallop toward the lift, but as more and more of the droids become visible, all streaming after them, their hopes fade that they can actually make it out of here…

But somehow, whether through luck or skill, they find themselves crashing down in front of the stargate several minutes later, all sporting cuts and bruises from droid attack but still alive. Vala jumps off the lift as Mitchell brings it in for a violent landing, sprinting to the DHD and punching in the symbols for the Alpha Site, not wanting to risk heading directly home in case the Forerunner AI decides to pursue. She, Daniel, and Eaton run through the event horizon barley after it’s finished forming, but Mitchell hangs back for another second, firing off one last round at the approaching droids and noticing, just barely, the glowing red eye of the AI as what must be the Forerunner equivalent of a security camera swings his way. Unnerved, he ducks into the stargate just before the wormhole dissolves, convincing himself that this race, however powerful, is long, long gone…

Probably just a filler race. Very interesting to explore, but you have to remember that us vs. Really Frakking Old Aliens is impossible to pull off realistically. There would be no explanation as to why they couldn't kill us off in a minute or two and be done with it, so it's more interesting to consider hypothetically than actually use as a plot point.

And even if they're not hostile towards us (even if their automatons are), why would they even care? If they were considered advanced by the Ancients 50,000,000 years ago (this is what I inferred from the episode), why would they give us a second thought? Humans, Tok'ra, even the Venii wouldn't even show up on their radar. Would the Der'kal?

Just one question: how come the wormhole from earth to the planet didn't connect to the stargate in the archives? Don't stargates with DHD's take precedence over other stargates?

They both had DHDs, so no. In "Solitudes" we saw that even though both Earth gates had DHDs, incoming wormholes defaulted to the SGC gate because it had more power than the Antarctic one. Similarly, the gate for the Forerunners stole is much older than the one the Ancients placed on the planet, so it has less energy than the one on the surface. Therefore, the wormhole defaults to the surface one.

I think that they'd be more like the latter, unfortunately for us. They're a race that lived eons before the Ancients, and there are probably relics of civilizations that rose and fell millions of years before the Alterans even arrived inside that ark-planet. It's something that would be tantalizing to open up and explore, but you have to weigh the odds... do you really want to attract the attention of a race that came before everything else you know about in the universe?

curiosity is a part of human nature

I really would like to know more about this race. What happened to them, where are they now

Quick question: We know that the alliance is still at war with the Ashen, but what about the remaining Der'Kal? Have they been dealt with ir are they an ongoing problem. Also, what is the state of Earth atm?

The remaining Der'kal factions are either fighting amongst themselves for dominance over the ships and armies they have left (very much like the Wraith), but they're still a problem. The Alliance would love to go hunt them down, but with the Aschen problem still there, and the Alliance fleet in ruins after so many years fighting for its life, it's just not possible right now.

As for Earth, the UN is still rebuilding. New York was the main focus, given that it's the site of the ISGC and where the FPE government set up base, but other cities are slowly but surely being put back together. Most people in the Third World are doing just fine, since they weren't subject to the devastating orbital bombardment that major countries like the UK, US, France, Russia, and China were. In short, humanity acts much more confident on the galactic scale than it really deserves to given how wrecked their homeworld still is.
