you don't gradually go lighter.
when you color your hair, you can gradually go darker, but to go lighter you usually need to strip out the darker color and - to do it harshly - bleach your hair 'white' then color it to the slightly darker color (as in blonde)
but stripping the color is hard on the hair and not something that you can do often unless you want dried out straw for hair
now hair color DOES fade. which is what we saw on amanda just a few weeks ago, when her hair was kind of a light auburn-brown. helen's dark hair was fading back to amanda's blonde
which is probably what she'll do for Sam for the movie. stop coloring her hair, let it fade and touch up her roots to match the fade (as in continually - as in every 6 weeks or so - dye her freshly grown roots to match her fading lighter hair)
really, all they need is a throwaway line about sam doing something different with her hair, or write the movie as 'sg-1 goes undercover' and sam colors her hair and it's done...even something like
daniel: sam, you look different
sam: hey, new job, new hair (and she looks askance at either teal'c or jack...bonus points if teal'c has some really odd do and daniel just nods and goes 'yeah') and the topic is over
seriously, are there any of us women that have gone 10 years without changing our hair?

It's not just my position. You stand to suffer the consequences along with everyone else. Now, if either of you have a more prudent suggestion on halting this crisis, i'm willing to hear it. Otherwise, i suggest we all go downstairs, cross our fingers and hope major carter and colonel o'neill can reach help.
Cross our fingers?
It's a superstitious way some humans have of expressing their desire for good luck.
