I find the debate over this to be quite funny, considering that none of you actually live in the Stargate universe and therefore cannot know how dangerous your respective countries have become since the Stargate Program was revealed half a decade ago now

Not really, it all depends upon the amount of beavers in your country.

                        15x05 "Earthfall"
Synopsis: The refugees attempt to make contact with survivors of the Der'kal assault on Earth, and embark on a dangerous mission to gather intelligence on their embattled world.
                        Spoiler:
The Beta Site gate room is finally seeing some peace and quiet, even after the bloody coup attempt of a few weeks previous ("Loyalties"). The experience seems to have calmed Major Eaton though, and she sits comfortably behind a computer panel, typing up a status report with her hair let down and her jacket unbuttoned. For her, this is as not-herself as one is likely to see. She seems to have finally lost her cast and crutches, though she still has the remains of a small cut on her cheek, no doubt a souvenir from her scuffle during the takeover.

Glancing at his watch, one of the nearby technicians tells Eaton that "it's that time again." Looking up at the nearby clock and seeing that it just passed midnight, Rebbecca sighs, muttering to herself that it's time for "just another let-down" and goes over to the DHD, pressing down one glyph after another. After a moment, it's clear that this is Earth's stargate address, and once all seven symbols are locked into place, Eaton sighs and depresses the activation dome, obviously expecting nothing. But then, to the shock of everyone, the portal comes online and a stable wormhole forms. And then there is nothing but stunned silence.

A few hours later, Colonel Carter has made a rare appearance on the ground to listen to a briefing in the Beta Site's utilitarian version of the conference room at the ISGC. She takes a seat alongside Jack, Daniel, and Talbot, while Major Eaton passes out a small file folder to all of them. When she's finished, she turned to a projector and flips it on, just as Colonel Taylor enters and slides into a chair next to Carter. Proceeding to explain what's going on, Eaton brings up an image of the stargate superimposed over a mass of gylmps. She says that ever since the fall of Earth, they've been dialing up home every day at one minute past midnight to see if debris has shifted enough (or something like that) to allow the ISGC gate to get a solid connection and open up. For over a year, they've gotten nowhere with this, but this morning they finally established an open wormhole.

Looking up, Jack says that's just not possible, and everyone turns to him for an elaboration. He explains that in the hours he spent on Earth before he was captured, he heard over the intact radiowaves that some survivors out near Cheyenne Mountain were scouting the area, and they said that the entire area was little more than a smoking ruin, the great complex itself reduced to a crater. There's just no way that anything could have survived the bombardment. Thinking, Daniel proposes a solution to the conundrum; the Der'kal simply brought their own gate on one of their ships, and that's the one they connected to. He immediately undercuts his own argument, though, pointing out that the aliens abhor the stargate network, and destroy all pieces of the grid whenever given the chance. That can't be it.

Regardless, Major Eaton reminds everyone that they are being presented with a monumental opportunity here. There's no way they could get a scouting party onto the planet and survive for any length of time, but if they could gate in, there's a chance that they could come and go as they please, undetected. What's more, this could be a one-shot-only sort of way to gather intelligence on their homeworld's situation and determine how the enemy is using it to advance their war efforts. They need to face the fact that this mission could change their understanding of things... and ultimately lead to a turning point in the conflict. Nodding, Carter gives the go-ahead; it's dangerous, but it's worth it.

A short time later, Carter is on the bridge of the Jupiter, telling her pilot that she has command while Sam herself goes through the gate to Earth. Before she can finish, though, Jack enters and pulls her aside, asking what in the world she thinks she's doing—after all, Sam is the leader of things here, she can't risk her life like this, not with all the turmoil recently. The refugees need stability and a steady commander, and that means she can't go on the mission. That's what O'Neill wanted to talk to her about; who's going? He himself can't participate because, as he realized during the coup attempt that he's just getting too old for field work. What's more, they can't afford to send out any large group of marines, because the attempted takeover led to many military deaths in the fighting. That leaves only a small group of personnel, and Jack thinks that the team should really only consist of no more than four persons, just like the old SG teams.

Down in the Beta Site, Major Eaton is horrified to discover that Colonel Taylor, after consulting Carter and O'Neill, has decided that she will join the expedition back to Earth. Trying to convince her superior that she should stay here, Rebbecca insists that fulfilling her day-to-day duties here inside the mountain are far more important than her (arguably just as useful as any other soldier) going back home on a potential suicide run. But Taylor shoots back that they want a qualified officer with high-enough rank to merit listening to should they encounter survivors, and with nothing but Colonels and Majors here at the refugee camp, Eaton fits the mold. Besides, she's a brilliant marksman with special ops training, just what this expedition will require to come back alive. Rebbecca tries again to avoid going along, but it's clear she's lost the fight, and Taylor just pats her on the shoulder and tells her to gear up as he walks off.

In the ready room, Danielle Talbot hurriedly pulls on a pair of combat boots, adding to her outfit of offworld gear. Given her mounting combat operations (the most recent being in "Loyalties"), she is obviously getting quite adept at setting herself up for fighting, and within a minute she is fully suited up. She grabs the P90 lying nearby and turns to leave when she notices Major Eaton walk in looking somewhat dejected. Frowning, Talbot asks what's wrong, sitting down and giving the New Zealander a look-over. Rebbecca again outlines how she doesn't want to go on this mission, muttering that some group of young, strapping marines should be the ones to do it. Of course, she quickly retracts this comment when Talbot reveals that the two other members of the team will be herself and Dr. Jackson, though she is still quite confused by this whole thing.

Pulling Eaton over, Talbot explains what she believes to be the reasoning behind this; the team has to be small, in order to avoid detection, hence the three people. They also need to have a wide range of skills, which they do (Eaton bringing combat and stealth knowledge, Talbot a seasoned negotiator and diplomat should they need to bargain with survivors or aliens, and Daniel having an extensive knowledge of the area immediately surrounding the ruined Cheyenne Mountain, having worked there for almost fourteen years). Together, they'll hopefully be able to use their collective skills to get in, find what they need, and get out. Clasping Eaton on the shoulder—just as Taylor did moments before—Talbot tells her it'll be okay and heads out for the gate room, leaving Rebbecca with something to think over.

Some time later, the makeshift offworld team has been assembled in the gate room, with Colonel Taylor and O'Neill watching from behind the DHD as the wormhole forms, bathing the room in a blue glow. Taylor tells the expedition team that should they encounter real danger of any kind, they are to retreat through the portal back to the Beta Site immediately; alerting the Der'kal to the fact that they did not wipe out all offworld human resistance with the Chinese colony ("Acts of Contrition") would be disastrous, as they would doubtless begin their search for them all over again. Nodding, Rebbecca gulps nervously and walks up to the event horizon, then takes a deep breath, raises her rifle, and steps through. With one final wave back at their friends, Daniel and Talbot follow.

They emerge on the other side in the ruined ISGC gate room, the once-mighty chamber now filled with debris. The window to the control room is shattered, and the blast doors are twisted and near collapse. The ceiling has partially collapsed, and the briefing room table can be seen blocking the spiral staircase up to the next level, having fallen through the floor. Talbot sucks in a breath, unprepared to see her old command so devastated, but Daniel is trying to keep a level head. Crouching, he notes that there are no bodies down here, even though there were dozens upon dozens of personnel still inside the base when it was blasted from orbit. With no light, they're relying on P90 flashlights to see, but even so, there should be corpses everywhere. Eaton, making her way out into the nearby hallway, mutters that maybe the Der'kal landed troops and ransacked the complex, clearing out the bodies in the process, but no then why leave the gate itself unburied like this? Talbot, regaining her composure, throws out that maybe the aliens thought they wouldn't be able to dial out anyway, so anyone who came through would be trapped. But they brought a naquadah generator with them, and the enemy knows they could use such a thing to power the portal in any event. It just doesn't add up.

Suddenly, there's a loud clang as a piece of equipment is knocked over in the hall. Eaton, alone out there, raises her P90 just in time to see two figures rush up and bash her rifle out of her hands, then proceed to restrain her and pin her arms behind her back. Talbot and Daniel, hearing this, take cover behind some of the rubble and shout for their shadowed enemies to let the Major go. Seven more of the figure take up position just inside the gate room, but advance no further. Finally, after a moment of silence, one of them steps forward into the light emitted by the flashlights; this is none-other than disgraced-Colonel Makepeace, who was found to be a rogue N.I.D. spy and convicted of high treason over a decade ago ("Shades of Grey"). Daniel, stunned, asks how in the world he got out of prison, but Makepeace isn't about to stand around talking. Instead, he orders his men to release Eaton, now seeing how the trio really are, and tells them to follow him; they need to get out of here.

Confused but knowing Makepeace has more experience with things here, the group follows him and his men down the hallway out of the gate room, stumbling over debris as they go. Constantly keeping an eye out for enemies, the traitorous officer explains that his prison complex was partially destroyed in the orbital bombardment that followed Colonel Carter's withdrawal from orbit ("Star By Star"), and he was able to sneak out in the confusion. After that, it was a simple matter of finding survivors and linking up with them; when your planet is being pounded by alien plasma, who did what tends to get forgotten. Eventually, he and those with him managed to find the remnants of the United States armed forces, the bulk of which had disengaged the Der'kal a few days after the battle and gone underground to avoid destruction. Together, those senior officers who made it out alive decided to form a resistance movement, vowing to make ruling Earth as difficult as possible for the enemy, and they've been doing just that ever since.

(Second part of "Earthfall," see previous post for start and next post for end.)

                          Spoiler:
As they turn down another hallway, one of Makepeace's men says that it hasn't been easy by any stretch of the imagination, either. They've had several major conflicts, two of which they won handedly and three of which ended in the complete annihilation of all resistance forces. Their last supplies of fuel and ammunition are starting to run out, too, and they expect their ability to field armor and aircraft to end within days. Glancing down at their own weapons, fully loaded thanks to the efforts of the Alliance to replace what they lose, the three members of the exploration team all glance at one another. They no-doubt realize the trials they've faced are nothing compared to what those back on their homeworld must undertake. After all, the Beta Site is far-removed from the war, safe and secure. But Earth is still little more than a battleground, one where people must die by the hundreds every day.

Finally, they come across a ladder tube identical to the one used to infiltrate higher levels of the Beta Site during the coup attempt, and Makepeace yanks it open. He says this one leads to a hatch up on the surface, about half a mile away from the where the mountain used to stand; it just barely missed being destroyed, but they've been using it to sneak in and out of the complex for about a month now, salvaging what they can and clearing out and giving the corpses a proper burial. He hands his rifle to one of his subordinates and grabs ahold of one of the rungs, then pulls himself up into the shaft. Shrugging, Daniel goes as well, quickly followed by Eaton and Talbot.

Hundreds of miles away, in Manhattan, the Der'kal seem to have finished creating a solidified command center for their occupation; an entire cruiser has been landed right down the middle of the island, with the buildings crushed underneath and the rubble, eventually, cleared away. Now it has been converted into a sort of palace, with defensive turrets encircling it and gunships patrolling the surrounding skies. Most of the city's edifices seem to have been left standing, albeit heavily damaged, and the Statue of Liberty can be seen in the distance on Liberty Island.

In the cruiser's largest personal quarters, Lor'al sits behind a computer terminal, going over reports of her fleet's successes against Alliance forces across the galaxy. Her offensive has been stalled by a Nox/Tok'ra battle group on the edge of the galaxy, but she expects Dar Eshkalon to fall within weeks, leaving a clear attack corridor straight to Chulak. This invasion has been dragged out for far too long, and the defeat of the Tau'ri did not bring the promised victory so many had longed for. Indeed, it seems to only have galvanized the infidels into fighting ever-harder, even taking back several star systems along the frontlines. And of course, to make matters worse, the symbiote inside her has been fighting its way to the forefront of her thoughts lately, interjecting her own vile opinions on every matter.

As if to confirm, Anise's voice then asks why the Der'kal don't simply end this war and make peace with themselves and the other sentients, a sentiment which pushes Lor'al over the edge. Grabbing her plasma pistol out of its holster, she places it next to her head and growls that if the Tok'ra does not remain silent, she'll simply blast her own skull open, killing Anise, then use one of their captured Goa'uld sarcophagi to revive herself and be done with it. Obviously, Anise's silence answers the question of how she'll respond quite well.

Suddenly, there's a soft beep from the console behind Lor'al, and she turns, reholstering her weapon. Apparently, her ship's sensors have detected, of all things, a stargate activation...

Back in Colorado Springs, Major Eaton is pulling herself out of the emergency escape hatch, joining Makepeace, Talbot, and Daniel in the darkness of night. In the distance, the hill that is all that remains of Cheyenne Mountain is silloetted by moonlight, a few lone Der'kal ships circling in the skies above. Gazing out at what used to be the most-secure location in the whole of the United States, Talbot lets out a long sigh, lamenting the loss of the ISGC. It had really become a galactic symbol of what determination and courage could do, even in the face of overwhelming odds and superior firepower, and now it was nothing more than a buried level or two in a wasted forest.

Nodding in agreement, Makepeace says that they can't stay here, as the woods are no longer thick enough to hide them, and waves for the group to keep moving. Apparently, they come and go in a Humvee, and it's just a few minutes' walk away, sheltered from enemy view by a rock overhang. Making their way in the indicated direction, the group keeps a watchful eye on the skies, silently praying that they aren't spotted. Leaning over to her companions, Major Eaton asks what they think the odds are any sort of resistance actually being able to liberate the planet. Neither Daniel nor Talbot find the prospect very likely, but at least it'll make holding onto Earth a thorn in the Der'kal's proverbial side.

Arriving at the Humvee, the group packs inside and one of the resistance soldiers slides into the driver's seat and turns on the engine. Revving the vehicle to life, he slowly pulls out from under the overhang and sets out through the trees, keeping all sounds muffled and the lights off so as not to attract attention. As they sit in silence, the three explorers from the Beta Site look over the weary fighters around them; all of them have scars, and none of them look well-rested in the least. After a moment, Daniel frowns, thinking, and asks what the chances are that the Der'kal can detect a stargate activation. Makepeace swears, shouting that they should have thought of that, then yells for the Humvee to swerve just as green plasma explodes all around them.

Eaton looks up to see the gunships previously circling the ruins of Cheyenne Mountain are now chasing after them. She yanks out her P90 and opens fire along with the other soldiers in the truck, hoping to click something vital, but the Der'kal know how to protect their ships, and the armor deflects every bullet with ease. One of the resistance marines yells for everyone to lean back, then pulls out an RPG-launcher and takes careful aim at the closest gunship... then he fires, landing a direct hit on the alien craft's belly and bringing it down into the forest floor with a spectacular explosion.

With two more gunships hot on their tail, the driver of the Humvee puts them into a dizzying spin before tearing off onto a nearby road. He shouts that there's a small resistance compound inside Colorado Springs itself, and if they can get close enough, their compatriots should be able to open fire on their pursuers and destroy them. And, sure enough, a few moments later, the road curves and reveals the mostly-abandoned city below. Makepeace shouts into his radio for the resistance base there to give them a hand, and a group of rockets fire out of nearby buildings at once. It only takes a few seconds for the gunships to go up in a blaze of fire and come crashing down to earth, and the Humvee cruises into the outskirts without any further opposition.

In orbit, a Der'kal transport is taking off from one cruiser and making its way towards another, the second one drifting in a lower orbit over the Western European coastline. The transport lands inside the other ship's hanger and the ramp scarcely has time to lower before Lor'al charges down it to meet a group of high-ranking alien officers waiting (somewhat) patiently below. All of them have at least two warrior guards with them, suggesting they are not quite comfortable with their appointed leader coming to visit them. Luckily, though, she doesn't seem interested in them in the least, and demands to know where the commander of this cruiser, Vur'naa, is. One of the less-scarred officers replies that he has locked himself in one of the interrogation chambers, passing the time extracting information from captured humans, as he's been doing for nearly a year now. They assume he has quite a fun time of it, though Lor'al is no longer listening. She growls angrily, turns to one of the warriors, and orders him to lead her to this chamber. Without further ado, they set off.

When she and her guide arrive at the interrogation suite, Lor'al angrily demands that Vur'naa step outside to speak with her at once. There's a long silence, and then the alien commander opens the door and comes out, obviously-human blood on his hands and arms and looking slightly annoyed. When he asks what it is she wants, his superior pulls out a portable computer uplink and hands it over, indicating the readout of a stargate activation an hour ago. She explains that she ordered him, him specifically, to make sure that the human gate complex was completely destroyed, with no chance of anything surviving down there. And yet, somehow, the portal is intact enough to allow for people to come on through. She demands to know why this is the case, and why she shouldn't shoot him through the head right at this instant. Eyes widening, Vur'naa says he'll have a detachment send to the area at once, then watches as Lor'al stalks away, hissing that she's becoming more trouble than she's worth.

On the surface, Talbot, Daniel, and Eaton sit inside a shack of a house in the main part of downtown Colorado Springs. This is the nearest headquarters of the resistance, which itself has well over ten thousand members now, all coordinating in strikes against Der'kal targets of opportunity across the planet. Without a satellite or wired network of communication, all planning is done via short-wave radio posts, spaced out just far enough to allow for relaying of messages to most corners of the globe. Their most recent success was in Hong Kong, where Chinese rebels managed to destroy two alien corvettes that had come down from orbit for refitting. If they can keep up this pace, the resistance expects to force the invaders to divert more and more ships to Earth for occupation purposes, thus giving the Alliance a larger advantage by the day.

Of course, there is the matter of the dozens of shipyards that have been setup on every continent, churning out new vessels to replace every one that's been destroyed. In an ironic twist of fate, Detroit is once again a smog-choked wasteland, with the largest concentration of facilities just north of the city-proper. The same is happening near Berlin, Beijing, New Delhi, and a host of other metropolitan areas, and they just don't have the firepower to take them all out. Looking hopefully at the newcomers, Makepeace points out that they took a few ships with them when they abandoned Earth, perhaps enough to come back and give them a hand...

But Jackson shakes his head, saying that they can't afford to lose any of their fleet right now, not when Carter's campaign against the Der'kal on the edge of Alliance space are really starting to hit the aliens hard. Taking the disgraced Colonel's hand, Daniel promises that they will come back to free the planet one day soon, but today just isn't that day. Watching them closely, Major Eaton glances down at the floor, shuffling uncomfortably. When Talbot leans over and asks what's wrong, she laments that the resistance won't be able to do anything in the long run; they don't have the numbers or weapons needed to drive the aliens offworld... they might as well be beavers, attacking with their teeth and claws.

(End of "Earthfall," see previous two posts for start.)

                            Spoiler:
Turning their attention back to the conversation, they catch Daniel slowly asking the question they've surely all been wondering; has the resistance movement... found any trace of Cameron Mitchell? A sad silence descends over the room, and Makepeace quietly says that their French comrades dedicated a solid two months to scouring all of Paris for him after his F-302 went down ("Star By Star"), but they turned up nothing. His fighter's crash site was little more than an alley strewn with twisted metal and cratered cement. Unfortunately, they just need to face the fact that the heroic Colonel didn't survive the Battle of Earth, and carry on the fight with his memory at their side.

In the continued quiet, Talbot suddenly picks her head up, frowning. When Daniel asks what it is, she turns to him and says that she hears something, but can't quite put her finger on what it is... and then the whole building shakes as an explosion blossoms outside! Makepeace and his men rush to the doorway in time to see dozens of Der'kal fighters, bombers, and gunships shoot by overhead, firing down on Colorado Springs and the network of houses that hide the resistance base. Cursing, Daniel shouts that they must have drawn the enemy here coming through the gate, but Makepeace says that it was worth it to know that the refugees are still out there, doing their best to come back home. Then he pushes the three of them into the outdoors, saying that they need to get them back to the ruins of the ISGC now before it's too late. Grabbing some of his men, they leap into the Humvee and take off, darting left and right to avoid being hit as they race into the forest towards Cheyenne Mountain.

In a gunship soaring high over the attack, Vur'naa watches the Humvee swerve into the woods on his holodisplay. He raises a hand to order a detachment of fighters after it, but then pauses, slowly lowering the hand. Growling at himself in disgust, he whispers that the humans better make the most of this, because the next time he sees them escaping, his annoyance with Lor'al won't stop him from blowing them into stardust. This time, though, he's content to add one more thorn to the bushel already plaguing his "esteemed" superior. She may have conquered the Tau'ri, but her slipping sanity has made it clear that Der'kal are not as invulnerable to the blending of a symbiote ("United We Stand") as she believes... and if a look of incompetence on her part will convince the Exarch to be rid of her, then so be it.

Guarding the emergency hatch to the ISGC are a quartet of Der'kal warriors, all with plasma rifles at the ready. But in the darkness, they fail to see the flashbang rolling towards them, and it stuns them momentarily as the rebels and refugees come out of the trees, guns blazing. As always, the warriors recover quickly and take cover, but one of them is taken down by Eaton and Makepeace before it can dive behind a nearby tree. Two more are finally shot dead by grenade, though the resistance fighters are forced to trade three of their own for the kills. The fourth and last warrior is, surprisingly, shot in the face by none-other than Talbot, who looks just as shocked at her perfect aim as the others. But knowing they have little time to waste, the survivors (Makepeace, the three refugees, and two of the rebel soldiers) pop the hatch and descend into the complex, knowing they don't have much time.

As they exit the ladder tube and make their way towards the gate room, Makepeace apologizes for not being able to do more for them, or give them a better idea of the state of things here. He honestly wasn't expecting the enemy to find them so quickly, but now they have an idea of the situation here. Reaching into his pocket, he pulls out a small USB drive and hands it to Major Eaton, explaining that it has all the intelligence they've recoveredon the Der'kal occupation force; commanders, strength, primary bases, etc. It should come in handy when they need to plan an assault on Earth in the future.

Arriving outside the gate room, Talbot and Daniel rush toward the portal itself to hook up the naquadah generator they brought and dial out to the Beta Site while Eaton, Makepeace, and the soldiers stand guard. The sound of approaching enemy warriors signals that their time is just about finished, and Jackson hurries the final power-up sequences for their power source, wiring it onto the stargate's inner track and pushing on it to move the glyphs. He and Talbot shove against it with all their strength, and it slowly spins to the first symbol they need; one down, six to go.

Then the Der'kal arrive, and a shootout ensues between the resistance members and the aliens. One of the soldiers is shot and killed, and Talbot shouts that they're not going to make it without more time. Glancing between her friends and the enemy, Eaton tosses the USB drive to Daniel and says that she'll stay to the end and hold off the Der'kal while the two of them escape to the Beta Site. Both of her teammates try to argue, but she shouts that she's not afraid, and that this way, maybe she can help them when the time comes to retake their homeworld. Provided she survives this little engagement, she'll do everything in her power to see that the aliens pay for every day, every hour, every minute of their occupation. Whatever the case, she's not as valuable to the victory as they are, and this is just how it must be.

Knowing she's right but not wanting to admit it, Daniel angrily locks the seventh symbol into place, and the stargate activates. Eaton punches in her IDC on her GDO and throws it to Talbot, asking her to tell Colonel Taylor that she'll be back to file "one hell of a mission report," then she and Makepeace charge into the hallway to give them the opening to get into the wormhole and get back to the fight. Jackson grabs the naquadah generator from beside the portal and steps up to the event horizon, staring out after the sound of gunfire and plasma discharges. He and Talbot glance at one another in pained agreement, then the two of them disappear into the shimmering puddle behind them, an unspoken commitment to return lingering in the air after them.
