((And now, the season premiere of Stargate SG-1!))

          15x01 "Severed Dreams"
Synopsis: When a military coup nearly ousts Col. Carter from her leadership over the survivors from Earth, she takes matters into her own hands to rally the refugees back to the war effort. Meanwhile, the other former-members of Stargate Command struggle to find their place in the galaxy.
          Spoiler:
((30 second recap of "Star By Star"))

High above a blue-green planet, a hyperspace window opens, ejecting the battered X-305 Jupiter into orbit. Since she was last seen a year before over Earth, the ship has obviously faced hard times; one of its hanger bays has been ripped clean off, though the area has been sealed and patched, and the entire forward section of the vessel is potmarked and scarred. Slowly cruising forward, the mammoth ship hovers over the Beta Site, returning to guard duty.

On the bridge, Col. Samantha Carter also looks far different from the one of twelve months previous; a thin scar runs across her right cheek from just under the eye to just right of her mouth. Her eyes look weary, like those of someone who has seen more than any human can bear and just kept on going anyway, and when she speaks, her voice is hoarse. She asks for a status report on the ship's systems and armaments, saying that the next time they go up against a Der'kal cruiser, she wants the Asgard weapons primed ten minutes before they drop out of hyperspace. Apparently, their latest mission did not go according to plan, and one of the officers nearby insists the systems were working fine, and that it was a power-flow problem, not human error.

But Sam doesn't want to hear it. She just tells the man to make sure it doesn't happen again, then puts her head in her hands, whispering that this is all so wrong. Looking up again, she apologizes to the officer and admits that he's right. Standing up and moving toward the door, Carter tells her navigator that he has the bridge, and that she's going to go try and unwind and clear her head. Trying to force a smile, she leaves.

Down on the planet below, the Beta Site has evolved tremendously; the mountain that houses the military complex is unchanged, but thousands of tents and makeshift houses have been built in a large settlement alongside it, with a field of F-302s nearby, ready to take to the skies if need be. Large tracts of farmland have been added, as well, in an attempt to let the refugees grow their own food, but even so, they still rely on massive amounts of humanitarian aid from the Alliance. The independent spirit of humanity has been broken, and the survivors are likewise disheartened.

Inside the mountain, the gate room, to be exact, a British Colonel by the name of David Taylor stands in front of an active stargate. Placed in charge of the Beta Site months before the battle over Earth ("Star By Star"), Taylor has struggled to deal with his command expanding from just a hundred-or-so men to over ten-thousand refugees, but he has done a remarkable job nonetheless, earning the respect and even admiration of those that have come to call this world home. Now in his early fourties, Taylor is a tall man with black hair and piercing blue eyes, though his smile suggests a spirit not unlike Jack O'Neill or John Sheppard's. Tapping his radio, he asks the person on the other end of the wormhole how things are going, to which said other replies things are... going. Not alright, but as good as can be expected.

Offworld, far from the stargate in old ruins of an Ancient outpost, Dr. Daniel Jackson, wearing a rugged and torn overcoat and worn SG team-esque combat gear. With a pistol holstered at his side and an old notebook in hand, he's hunched over a set of runes that appear to be Asgard in origin, suggesting this place was an old Alliance meeting spot, or at least a structure sued by two of the Great Races. Sitting back on his haunches for a moment, Daniel asks Taylor if anything has improved since he left five months ago to try and locate old relics they could use in the fight against the Der'kal. The answer, unfortunately, is no.

Sighing, Jackson wonders aloud if things might have been different had SG-1 stayed together, at least what was left of it. With Mitchell having gone down in France, that left only three of them, but regardless, he thinks the sheer influence and inspiration the sight of the team used to bring could have really rallied the survivors from Earth. Instead, they all went their separate ways; Carter diving into a crusade against the aliens at every chance, Vala heading off to who-knows-where, and he himself isolating himself on dozens of strange worlds in an attempt to find some sort of saving grace. Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, Daniel turns back to his work and tells Taylor to update him if anything major changes, then wishes the Colonel the best of luck with his refugees. After wishing the Doctor the same, the British officer turns to one of his technicians and orders the stargate shut down.

As the wormhole fizzes out, Taylor moves to leave the room, but then a transmission comes in from the Jupiter. It sounds like people are screaming in the background, and the ship's pilot screams that there's been an attempt on Colonel Carter's life up there, with a bomb exploding so close to the hull that it ripped a hole clear through to space, venting half a dozen men and women working in the area. Samantha herself was thrown against a bulkhead and knocked unconscious, but luckily was tossed far enough not to be pulled into space before the section could be sealed off. A med team is taking her to the infirmary now, but she's in pretty bad shape. Eyes widening, Taylor demands to know how this happened, how the Der'kal were able to get onto the X-305 and plant the explosives... but the pilot cuts him off. This wasn't orchestrated by the aliens; it was from within their own ranks. This wasn't an attack, it was an attempted coup.

A few hours later, the entire base is on lockdown, with no one going offworld or being allowed through the 'gate until this can be figured out. Taylor has gone so far as to beam a contingent of his own marines up to the Jupiter, having them replace the regular soldiers there for the time being. No one is above suspicion, and, as an extra precaution, the hyperdrive has been taken offline to prevent those behind the attack from hijacking the ship and taking off. Walking out of the blast doors of the Beta Site to the road leading down the short rise to the refugee settlement, Taylor looks out over the encampment and asks what Colonel Carter's condition is now. He is surprised a moment later to hear Sam herself on the other line, as she snaps an earpiece into place coming out of the X-305's infirmary, a crutch in hand but by no means ready to sit things out.

As Carter makes her way to the bridge, flanked by four Beta Site guards, she explains that this just confirms what she has feared since Dr. Talbot was forced out of civilian leadership three months previous over calls from angry refugees that she did not have the stomach to make the hard decisions necessary for the survivors... such as reigning in Carter's insistence on continuing to attack the Der'kal at every turn, an action that is apparently becoming increasingly unpopular. Stepping into an elevator with her guards, Sam asks Taylor what he's going to do, and if he plans on telling her to stop what she's doing (though in reality it wouldn't carry any weight, with them being the same rank). The British Colonel just sighs, saying he wouldn't dream of it, and with the Joint Chiefs and most other high officers killed on Earth trying to evacuate (the Chiefs' own jumper was destroyed just two miles away from the ISGC), Sam is essentially the head of all Tau'ri military forces remaining. It's up to her.

When the lift arrives on the bridge level, Carter gets out and continues on her way, affirming that, in that case, she's going to keep up the pressure on the enemy. Two Jupiter soldiers step out from the shadows of the hallway, as if planning to keep her from entering the command room, but upon seeing the hard, furious look on her face and the determined marines behind her, they quickly move aside and let her pass. Limping into the bridge itself, Carter wastes no time going over to her command chair and stabbing at the shipwide intercom button; she's visibly angry, but obviously trying to restrain herself.

Meanwhile, inside the mountain, the lockdown is being lifted just in time for an incoming wormhole. With Colonel Taylor still outside trying to assess the situation, the technician on-duty sees a friendly IDC come through and opens the facility's iris (although normally offworld bases don't have them, the BC-303s evacuating people during the siege of Earth had the good sense to beam up the spare barrier and take it to Chulak along with the VIP refugees. It was relocated to the Beta Site following the survivors' move there), allowing whoever is en route to arrive safely. The defense team stands down and steps aside as Jonas Quinn walks through the wormhole and down the ramp, looking somewhat out of breath and asking to speak to whoever's in charge at once. He's come direct from Heliopolis, and he has some news he thinks the Tau'ri will want to hear.

A short time after that, Jonas is waiting in a VIP room inside the Beta Site, looking over a book on theoretical wormhole physics written by Dr. Radek Zelenka. He begins to flip through the more math-intensive portions of the work as the door opens and Colonel Taylor enters, followed by a younger woman (here meaning roughly in her late twenties or early thirties) wearing a New Zealand patch on her jacket. Sporting typical military garrison gear and letting her longer-than-regulation brown hair spill down, the woman has a hint of Irish in her features, smiling warmly at the Langaran scientist-turned-politician before her. This is Maj. Rebecca Eaton, who, before the attack on Earth, acted as head of the Beta Site's secondary offworld team. She has since taken over as head of security, Taylor's trusted de facto second-in-command.

Curious as to why Jonas has come to his facility, Taylor asks what news he's bringing for them. Quinn, though, isn't sure whether or not to trust the Colonel, and asks instead to speak to either Samantha Carter or the government... to which Eaton sharply replies that the former is preoccupied purging the military of dissidents and the latter has essentially been dissolved; President Henry Hayes died of a heart attack a few weeks after he was evacuated from Earth, and the UN Secretary-General refused to leave New York even as the Der'kal came down from orbit... it is assumed he was killed there. Without either of them present and speaking, the surviving political figures from home cannot seem to agree on anything at all, and all coherent law and order has broken down on their end, leaving the military as the essential governing force. So if Jonas really wants to go there, he is speaking to the Tau'ri government, as far as there is one, anyway.

(More of "Severed Dreams," see previous post for start and next post for end.)

            Spoiler:
Sighing, but seeing that this is as good as it's going to get, Jonas takes a seat in one of the room's chairs and explains that, following the human defeat a year ago, he was contacted by Kal'el of the Free Jaffa Nation. Acting as Prime Minister now that Teal'c was able to lead again, she was contacting him on behalf of the Alliance, which was interested in his unique skill set and past experience as a member of SG-1. When he visited Heliopolis, he was eventually offered a position in Alliance Intelligence, a department dominated until then by Tok'ra operatives who could no longer do active field work. Deciding that work as a spy against the Der'kal was better than listening to national squabbles on Langara, he gladly took the job, and has been sneaking on and off enemy-held planets for the past year, gathering information on their movements and plans and helping the Alliance win several victories. And on his last assignment, he came across something shocking.

Ever since they discovered that the Der'kal were using their hacked-communications-grid ("Coventry") to send them false information, they've realized that it was no longer a viable way to keep tabs on the aliens. His latest mission took him to Deraan, a planet that fell to the enemy within the first few weeks of the war ("Frontlines") but has since been given more liberty as Der'kal ships and men are pulled off to patrol and defend their vast holdings across half the Milky Way. Despite this, though, several prominent alien commanders continue to keep their flagships stationed in Derann's orbit, and Jonas was able to ring aboard one of them and do some exploring, using a reinvented Tok'ra isotope to stay hidden. After hacking into a secure computer bank, he located some startling information, downloaded it to a data crystal, and escaped back to Heliopolis via a cloaked scout ship.

When Taylor, growing slightly impatient, asks what it was he found, Jonas looks up at him and says that a massive detainment center has been constructed on the ruined surface of Ankgor... and that several hundred of Earth's most-prominent political, military, and civilian figures are being held there awaiting mass execution. If they could run the enemy blockade around the planet, they could use Jonas' precise intelligence to beam up everyone in the Tau'ri wing of the complex, saving hundreds of lives. But there's a limited window on this possibility; the executions are schedules for tomorrow, and they would need to leave immediately.

Up in orbit, Carter is being filled in on what Jonas had to say by Maj. Eaton, as Col. Taylor is continuing to debrief Jonas. He's going to authorize a rescue mission, even though they have no idea exactly who is being held prisoner. They have a chance to bring some Earthborn heroes home, restoring faith in the military and giving the people something to live for again, and he's going to take it. Eaton relays a request for the Jupiter to be the ship heading to Ankgor, despite the recent scuffle onboard and its numerous battle scars. It's still the largest and most-powerful ship they have, with an ability to take far more punishment than a mere DSC-304 could. In complete agreement, Carter says she'll have her crew begin prepping for departure immediately, and that they can leave within the hour, just as soon as emergency repairs to the bomb-damaged sections are complete.

She admits she's somewhat surprised that Jonas has risen to such a high position, and even more surprised that no one bothered to inform them of it happening. Grimacing, Eaton floats the idea that the other Alliance races no longer consider the Tau'ri proper members, similar to how the surviving Hebridanians were largely excluded from intergalactic affairs after their homeworld was captured ("Inroads, Part 2"). Sam sees how it might happen, but with friends like Teal'c and Lya working behind the scenes, they shouldn't be this cut off from things. Either way, she needs to get back to readying her ship, and Carter cuts the connection as Eaton returns to her own duties.

Just as the young Major turns away from the communications relay, though, she hears the stargate coming online nearby. Making her way across the hall and into the 'gate room, she greets Dr. Jackson, who is just coming through the wormhole, covered in dust and mud from head to toe. Daniel asks what was so urgent that they wanted him to come back (and says they caught him just in time; he was about to dial up a new planet when he was contacted). Taking him by the arm and leading him into the hall, Eaton starts to explain Jonas' arrival and the news he brought, saying they need to get him up to speed if he wants to help...

A short time later, the Jupiter is seen pulling away from the Beta Site and opening a hyperspace window, which it promptly enters on a direct course to Ankgor. On the bridge, Daniel enters to see Jonas and Sam (the former wearing Langaran diplomat attire and the latter in fatigues) talking and catching up on recent events. Color has returned to Carter's cheeks, and she actually seems to be happy for the first time in the episode, most of the coldness and harshness of earlier having disappeared with the appearance of an old friend. Jackson quickly greets Jonas and smiles warmly, remembering the brief but exciting adventure they shared years ago ("Fallen"/"Homecoming"). Even after all that time, it's good to have him around.

The Langaran then launches into a run-down of what Alliance Intelligence has gathered; Ankgor is still one of the largest Der'kal bases of operation in the galaxy, just behind Earth and Hebridan. They have a fleet of an estimated one-hundred ships in the star system, and hundreds of thousands of aliens live in the massive cruisers and down on the planet below in specialized complexes built to escape the harsh conditions created by the devastating bombardment the surface suffered two years ago ("Total War"). They'll need to drop in, slip past the blockade, and beam out the prisoners all within minutes, as even the X-305's shields aren't capable of going head-to-head with a fleet of the size they'll be facing.

Further on the journey, Daniel and Sam are talking about what the former has found offworld when the pilot announces that she is preparing to cut power to the hyperdrive and drop them out. Suddenly serious, Carter orders the necessary power transfers made, and has the Asgard sensors primed to sweep the area Jonas indicated as soon as they revert to normal space. Then, steeling herself for what's about to come for them, Sam nods to the pilot and grips her arm rests in anticipation.

In space over Ankgor, dozens of Der'kal ships orbit the conquered Jaffa world, floating lazily among the stars. Suddenly, just a bit farther out, a hyperspace window opens... and a moment later, the Jupiter emerges, rail guns blazing and missiles scattering all across the area. The sublight engines immediately rise to full power, and the ship rockets into the heart of the enemy formation, blasting everything in sight as the aliens slowly realize that they are actually under attack and start to return fire. One by one, the cruisers, corvettes, frigates, and other vessels start to pummel at the X-305's shields, but the ship doesn't slow, and if anything it speeds up as it approaches the inner edge of the fleet.

On the bridge, Daniel and Jonas are forced to grab onto nearby terminals as the ship rocks violently from plasma impacts on every side. Computer banks begin sparking furiously as the shield generators desperately try to funnel more and more energy into the defensive fields to keep them from failing under the strain. One of the crewmembers shouts out that they'll only have another minute or so under this kind of punishment before they lose power, and that the sensors have yet to locate the prisoners in the area Jonas indicated. Not willing to give up, Sam shouts for them to keep looking anyways.

In the command center of one of the Der'kal ships, the vessel's commander looks on in astonishment at the single Tau'ri battlecruiser darting left and right just above the atmosphere. He turns to a subordinate and asks why the humans, usually so cunning and cautious, would now embark on a mission with no seeming purpose and sure of suicide. More interesting, though, is the revelation that the humans still have the capacity to launch an attack at all... which means there is still a base of theirs out there somewhere capable of hurting the Der'kal war effort. Turning to a communications officer, the commander demands a link to the Exarch at once; the human threat was not fully eliminated, as previously thought.

Meanwhile, the sensors still have yet to lock onto the prisoners, and the shields are dropping fast. Someone screams that they only have 8% power in them left, and plasma is starting to bleed through to the hull, opening breaches on several decks. Daniel turns to Sam and tells her that they need to decide; are they going to keep waiting or leave while they still can? The survivors back at the Beta Site need every man, woman, and ship they can get, and the loss of the Jupiter and its entire crew would be a devastating loss... but no. Carter refuses to leave until they rescue those they came for, and she tells everyone just hang in there for one... more... minute...

...and it pays off. Just as the shields fail, the sensors get a lock on some three-hundred-sixty-one persons being held right in the area Jonas indicated, and the Asgard beam is brought online to extract them. In the cargo hold of the ship, surprised engineers look up as the large group suddenly materializes, all wearing tattered remnants of the clothes they had when taken on Earth. At once, the crewmembers drop what they're doing and go to explain what's going on.

With plasma ripping into the ship, Carter gives the order to make an emergency hyperspace jump, and the X-305 executes a hairpin turn to face the Beta Site's star system. Then, it shoots forward (startling the Der'kal commander whose vessel the human ship nearly hits in the process) into a hyperspace window, leaving Ankgor far, far behind. The mission is a success... and it may be just the solution Sam has been looking for to give the survivors something to hope for again. As they speed back home some time later, one of the cargo hold engineers radios the bridge, asking if Colonel Carter, Dr. Jackson, and Jonas could come down here. The people they extracted are definitely in need of friendly faces, and a speech or two from the former-members of SG-1 couldn't hurt, either. Smiling, Sam says they'll be right down and gives command to her pilot, standing and joining the other two at the doorway.

When they arrive several decks down, the trio walks in to thunderous applause from the people they rescued (among them Generals, politicians, and high-civilian figures from human society). Many are crying in relief, never having thought that they would escape the Der'kal prison camp, but they all radiate gratitude and a readiness to join the fight anew nonetheless. Daniel tells them all that they will be welcomed with open arms at the Beta Site, then pauses as he sees someone familiar in the pack of captured people, slowly making their way forward. His jaw slowly drops, followed quickly by Jonas' as the Langaran sees, too. Looking on in confusion, the rescued persons peer around and, as they, too, notice, part to make way.

(End of "Severed Dreams," see previous two posts for start.)

              Spoiler:
The last person to look up is Samantha Carter, and she gasps as if seeing a ghost when the beaten and brusied figure of Jack O'Neill limps towards her. In shock, Sam can't seem to make herself move, and she stands still as stone until Jack finally reaches her and puts a hand on her chest, unable to believe he's really here with her again. Then, a single tear trailing from his eye, he falls into her in relief, whispering that he is never going to leave her again... and everyone looks on as the two souls are united once again.

Hours later, after the Jupiter has arrived at the Beta Site again, Colonel Taylor is bidding Jonas farewell at the stargate; the Langaran needs to return to Heliopolis for his next assignment. Hoping to recover from some of his iciness earlier, the British officer tells Quinn that he is welcome here anytime, and says that, should the Tau'ri join the war in full, they would be honored to have him at their side. Jonas promises to mull the offer over and thanks Taylor, adding that he's done an incredible job in these times, then steps through the 'gate with a final request to give his regards to the others.

Outside, standing on a rise overlooking the refugee settlement, Jack and Sam stand in silence, letting the wind whip their hair as they watch people mull about. Leaning in, O'Neill says that it was the knowledge that she was still out there fighting that let him hold out in the prison camps, even under all the torture he received after finally being captured in lower Washington, D.C. just after the battle. Her eyes still red from crying, Carter whispers that it was the same for her; the thought that he was still alive kept her going, kept her fighting, and she just can't believe she really got him back at last.

Daniel wordlessly approaches from behind, joining the two of them in the setting sun, saying that he's decided to stay on here for a while. His place is with his people, not turning over Ancient ruins for technology that probably vanished millennia ago. He wants to help retake Earth, any way he can... SG-1 may be dissolved, but that doesn't mean the team has to fall. Sam nods, adding that she'll try and contact Vala and see what resources she has to offer, and as for Mitchell... there's little hope for returning him to the team, whatever his fate was in Paris, but his memory will drive them on all the more.

The three of them stand there for a long moment before Jack finally adds something in, muttering that now the fight really begins; they're going to take back Earth, and they're going to do it whatever the cost. They lost the battle, but the war... the war has just begun.

Wow another awesome episode dude! It is good to see the characters beaten up like that. The fight to stay on tracks with so much chaos all around them, brilliant. About your possible continuation of Atlantis, are you planing on making a completely new series of episodes or are you taking in consideration the chart made by Joseph Mallozzi and writers for the curse of the now canceled 6st season? As seen here http://josephmallozzi.files.wordpres...9/dsc01093.jpg. Thanks.

Self-promoting is good haha, but no. I'm looking for a more compact design, something with a traditional Earth look but less long-neck stuff... more like a Battlestar, less like a Prometheus. The Jupiter is supposed to be the pinnacle of Earth technology, a blend of human ingenuity, Asgard power, and Ancient knowledge, and it's also supposed to be a raw powerhorse of destruction, a ship capable of tearing enemies apart. I want something that just excretes a feeling of awe and intimidation; when you see a 305 coming, you want to surrender.
