        +1

S is doing this in his own time, is not getting paid for it. He will publish the story when he is able to. As said above if you keep complaining he will stop writing the stories and I don't think I could handle that!

S -> Keep up the great work!

                          14x16 "Flight of the Phoenix"
A prototype drive-core allows SG-1 and the DSC-304 Phoenix to travel through alternate realities on a search for a way to end the war with the Der'kal.
                          Spoiler:
((45 second recap of "The Last Man," "The Daedalus Variations," and "A Family Affair"))

High above Earth, a lone DSC-304 battlecruiser floats in orbit, pointed out toward the stars beyond humanity's home. Inside, in what would appear to be the engine room, a male figure is lying underneath a large machine, his upper body largely obscured by the device he is working on. Strangely, this person isn't wearing a USAF uniform, and instead has on a pair of faded blue jeans and slightly-worn black sneakers. Nevertheless, he seems quite at home working here.

Coming in from the hallway, Dr. Rodney McKay immediately begins complaining about the mess hall's wait staff, absently wondering if he can get better food if he refuses to work on the ship's engine system... and then he notices the other man working underneath what is most likely the hyper- or sublight-drive. He at once drops the notebook he's carrying and begins shouting, demanding to know who this person is and why he's tampering with such a massively-advanced piece of technology, especially considering all the hard work he and Dr./Col. Samantha Carter have put into developing it. When the person doesn't answer, McKay begins looking around for an intercom to call for security and, not finding one, settles for trying to kick the man's legs in an effort to make him stop his "sabotage."

Finally, now that he has been actually assaulted, the other man pulls himself out from under the drive, revealing the sludge- and oil-covered face of young Jason Carter, an iPod dangling from his ear and a very confused look on his face. Rodney, not knowing who this teenager is, begins shrieking that there's a child playing with the prototype. Sighing, Jason asks if McKay even knows who he is, to which the elder scientist replies that he doesn't, nor should it matter, considering this project is for those with the highest level of security clearance only. Still annoyed that Rodney isn't getting it, Jason reaches into his pants pocket and tosses an ID badge over, which the former reads very carefully... it clearly outlines Jason as a "Project Lead," equal on this endeavor to McKay himself. When an incredulous Rodney asks how that's possible, Jason sighs and asks just how he thinks Samantha was able to do all her work so fast, considering she did three times more for this than he did. Blushing, Rodney points at the young man and mouths, "You?," to which Jason nods in a way suggesting, "About time he got it." Embarrassed, and not realizing that there are two genius Carters out there, McKay stammers and apology and rushes from the room.

On the bridge, Samantha Carter and the rest of SG-1 are conversing with Colonel Tanya Sobel, commander of this vessel... the DSC-304 Phoenix (in an alternate reality, Sobol was commander of the Daedalus ("The Daedalus Variations")). Apparently, she and her ship have mostly been seeing action in the Pegasus Galaxy, but when the it was reduced to little more than scrap metal in combat with the Wraith a couple of months before, it was sent back to Earth for a refit. Now, though, after numerous repairs and a serious overhaul to her primary systems, the cruiser is again ready to join the fight against humanity's enemies. In this case, though, it will be used for the trial run of an alternate reality drive co-designed by Rodney McKay and Samantha and Jason Carter. It is heavily based off of such a thing created in a parallel universe that the Atlantis Expedition encountered several years ago, though this model is scaled down in both size and function; it can only travel through a dozen or so realities in one run, to minimize power usage to just one ZPM and three Mark III naquadah generators. It's nowhere near as powerful as the complex "subspace tap" system the other universe's team developed, but it will do.

Either way, Sobol is pleased that the ISGC chose her ship to be the one to test this new system, and she hopes that a quick test run will prove the technology is feasible. Who knows, maybe some day they can go collecting ZPMs or other such things from other realities that have an abundance of them. That would certainly help in the war effort.

Just then, McKay walks onto the bridge, still looking somewhat mortified from his shouting match with Jason. He hastily, and somewhat awkwardly, informs Carter that the drive looks ready to go, then glances at Sobol and says he's ready to be beamed down to the ISGC for a quick trip back to Atlantis. He wishes the two Colonels good luck and then disappears. That settled, Sam radios Jason to get up here and smirks at her teammates, her excitement obvious and infectious. Vala claps her hands together and says she can't wait to get going, and Daniel and Mitchell are clearly intrigued, as well.

Sobol sits down in her command chair and Carter slides into the systems' control console as the communications officer gets the go-ahead order from the Pentagon to engage the drive-core. Everyone holds their breath as it powers up, and a sudden burst of white light fills the entire ship...

...and then it fades, revealing the exact same set of stars that were outside the windows before. Frowning, Mitchell asks if that was it, and Carter scans the immediate area for any notable differences. Almost at once, she finds one... the planet below them is clearly Earth, as evidenced by the myriad human satellites floating about that she's detecting, but it's not one they ever wanted to see. This Earth, after all, has been shattered into several dozen pieces.

Everyone stares down at the ruined planet as the Phoenix rotates to face it, and the tension on the bridge is palpable. No one expected this to be in the very first reality they entered, and with their own home still fresh in mind, it's simply too jarring an image to contemplate. After a moment of the utter silence, Colonel Sobol asks her helmsman to spin up the drive again and jump. This reality has nothing for them, and even if there was something to be gained from exploring the area further, neither she nor anyone else really wants to search the broken remains of their once great world.

As another bright flash of light fills the ship, Jason Carter makes his way from engineering to the upper decks. He's fiddling with his iPod again, which is apparently malfunctioning. As he slams it into his palm in a vain attempt to get it going again, the ship rocks violently, and he is thrown against the bulkhead. Grabbing at his headset, Jason radios his aunt and asks what in the world is going on, but gets only the sound of shouting and sparking in reply. Whatever's happening on the bridge, Samantha is in no position to answer.

Upstairs, SG-1 is struggling to keep control of their ship as they seem to have jumped into a massive orbital engagement over their beloved Earth. Closest to the planet are dozens of ha'tak and human vessels, furiously pounding a seemingly-endless armada of Der'kal ships opposite them with plasma fire. Thousands of death gliders, F-302s, and other fightercraft dart in and out of the massive cruisers, and debris litters every empty space. Clinging to a sensor panel, Daniel shouts that he's not too fond of this particular reality, a sentiment Vala and Mitchell are quick to echo, but Carter insists that there's nothing she can do; the AR drive needs another few minutes to refill its buffer, and until that happens, they're stuck here.

Just then, the ship is hailed by what seems like Stargate Command. Not seeing any real reason not to reply, Carter has the transmission put through... allowing base commander Samantha Carter an opportunity to speak with her. The two Sam's are shocked to be talk to one another, and our Sam quickly explains that they're using a prototype drive system to explore alternate realities, and that they're only going to be here for a few minutes. But this universe's Carter is desperate for help, and begs SG-1 to stay and help them repel the Der'kal. Their version of Nueva has already fallen, and they have nowhere else to go should Earth itself be taken. When Colonel Sobol tries to explain that they can't risk being stuck here, the alternate Carter shouts out one last time, demanding to know how they can be so callous... and then the AR drive fires, and a blinding flash of white removes the battle from the eyes of those aboard the Phoenix. Behind SG-1, the sound of crying can be heard, no doubt from those crewmembers who couldn't handle seeing their planet devastated twice in only ten minutes.

Meanwhile, on the original Earth, Dr. Talbot is rushing down to the control room to receive an important message from the Nox. Just as she comes down the stairwell, though, she sees an unfamiliar man in a military uniform standing just outside the nerve center of the base, his cap in hand. The officer catches Talbot's eye and nods for her to approach, though she isn't sure exactly what he's here for. Telling the gate technician on-duty stall the Nox, she goes out into the hallway and asks what she can do for the newly-arrived military man. Without saying a word, he pulls out a small envelope and hands it over, saying it comes straight from General O'Neill's office, who himself is embroiled in negotiations offworld and cannot be reached, but that his staff knew to forward it here. Then he takes a step back as Danielle opens the letter and reads...

(End of "Flight of the Phoenix," see previous post for start.)

                            Spoiler:
On the Phoenix, Daniel is admiring the Medieval-level planet below them, something he attributes to this reality's probably extended Dark Age... or a nuclear holocaust, whichever one prefers. The crew is going over the ship's systems, checking for any serious damage they may have sustained in their brief but fierce bout against the Der'kal. At the far end of the bridge, Jason and Samantha Carter are tweaking a computer terminal, and Vala and Mitchell are contemplating the readout of the status of the alternate-reality drive. Cameron asks how something like this is even possible, but Vala just grabs him by the shoulders, leans in, and whispers, "Technobabble." Then, leaving Mitchell very confused, she smiles and walks off.

Coming toward the two Carters, Colonel Sobol asks Sam if the ship's ready to get moving again. The elder scientist nods, saying that the shields held up fine and that the drive is in tip-top shape. That said, after seeing just what they could potentially get into, Sam advocates that try jumping realities at a location more likely to be safe and secure. When Jason asks what she has in mind, Sobol suggests Chulak; it should be far from the frontlines, and it's traditionally the most heavily-fortified world in the Jaffa Nation. Their destination decided, the Colonel turns to her pilot and tells him to make the jump to the Jaffa capital via a route through the uninhabited galactic core (to avoid any unneeded problems), then tells Carter not to worry; the Phoenix can handle whatever comes at it.

As the ship enters the hyperspace window, Jason expresses his doubts about this mission. When Dr. McKay first proposed it to the ISGC (and him, via Sam), he was ecstatic about the idea of being able to visit other realities. But he expected at least one to mimic their own in terms of current situation. But so far, they've come across three different Earths, all with varying levels of "bad" going on. He honestly expected that most of the humanities they encountered would be ones like theirs, even though, in all likelihood, they should be radically different according to the Multiverse Theory. Sam, though, fully anticipated something like this, though she hopes their next universal jaunt will prove somewhat more-optimistic.

Suddenly, there's a bright flash of white light as the vessel makes its way through hyperspace. Immediately, Colonel Sobol asks what's going on, but her crew are at a loss. They're still, after all, traveling toward Chulak at full speed, along the same path. Regardless, Sam thinks something's wrong, as that flash looked oddly like the one they all experience whenever the ship jumps into a new reality. Glancing over from where he's standing, Daniel asks how that would even be possible considering they didn't activate the drive, but Jason has a theory; it's possible, though the chances are very slim, that the unanticipated battle put a strain on the AR drive's capacitors as massive amounts of energy were transferred across the ship at high speeds, and they might have fired prematurely. And if that's the case, then they're no longer in the same universe at all.

Before anyone can think of more, though, the ship jerks violently, and the hyperspace tunnel dissolves as the Phoenix shoots back into realspace. Sobol asks what just happened, but the answer is almost directly in front of them; a large fleet of Der'kal ships have surrounded this reality's Supergate, and are proceeding to pummel it with energy fire. One of them, the one closest to the 304, is immediately identified as carrying a hyperspace interdictor by the sensors' officer, and it was no doubt responsible for their abrupt stop.

Mitchell walks over to the window and points out the obvious, "Well, that could be a problem..." just as the enemy seems to notice them. Two alien cruisers turn away from the Supergate and open fire on the human vessel, which immediately pulls away, trying to get out of range of the interdictor. When Vala asks what the Der'kal are doing here, Samantha offers the guess that they're trying to keep the former-Ori followers from aiding this galaxy's Alliance in fighting them... something they really should think about back in their own universe.

As the enemy ships pound against the rear shields, Sam suggests they transfer all power from their ZPM to the hyperdrive. If she's right, that would give it a large enough boost to punch through the disturbance field and open a window here and now. After all, they have no idea what the range on those things are, and it could take them an hour to get far enough out, time they simply don't have with more of the Der'kal support ships breaking off to engage them. Jason voices concern that they might overload the system, but given the situation, Sobol overrules him and orders the power switch at once. The lights flicker and the computer monitors darken briefly as the ZPM stops boosting the ship's primary systems, and then outside, the start of a hyperspace window can be seen. Unlike previous attempts to open such a thing, this window takes several seconds of flickering to fully form, and Jason mutters that he has a bad feeling about this as the Phoenix makes the leap into the tunnel, leaving the Der'kal far behind.

Some time later, the ship exits hyperspace on the outskirts of Chulak's space, hoping to avoid another run-in with any hostile entities. Luckily, though, the sensors pick up nothing but ha'tak broadcasting friendly IFF (or what would be such in their own reality). As the window behind them closes, Jason starts to admit that maybe he overreacted... and then the ship shakes as a massive explosion rips through the rear of the ship, exposing several areas to vacuum. Colonel Sobol orders the affected sectors sealed off and any endangered crewmembers beamed to the infirmary at once. Worried, Daniel asks what just happened, and a bridge crewmember informs SG-1 that it looks like the explosion came from the no-longer-responding hyperdrive. More than likely, being put under so much strain overloaded it, just as the younger Carter feared, which means they're now stranded here at Chulak.

As the ship slowly approaches the planet, it occurs to Mitchell that there might already be a Phoenix in this reality... but then they're hailed by one of the Jaffa ships, which orders them to cease activity immediately and prepare for boarding. Surprised, and very confused, Sobol asks the Jaffa what the meaning of this is, and explains that they're damaged and in need of repairs. But the formerly-friendly ha'tak do not reply, simply breaking orbit and moving to hedge in the 304 on all sides. Vala suggests they get out of here before they wind up dead, and Daniel reminds her that they have no hyperdrive. Sam shouts for the alternate reality system to be fired up, saying that they need to jump now, even as the first few plasma blasts strike the shields. The drive is powered, but before it can discharge, a bright blue beam lances out from behind the ship, striking the nearest Jaffa vessel. Amazed, the crew looks on as two DSC-304s soar out of hyperspace and fire on the ha'tak, blasting one, then two, then three into little more than dust.

Sobol hails the lead ship and thanks them for the assist as the Jaffa ships retreat to Chulak, and an unfamiliar male voice replies that he's always happy to protect a fellow Imperium cruiser. That said, he wonders why they were unable to just destroy the "barbarian" ha'tak themselves, a question which worries SG-1; things start to fall into place for Jason, who realizes that, in this reality at least, Earth must be a "bad guy," trying to conquer the galaxy rather than help unite it. Disturbed, Sam tells the other ship's commander that they consider the Jaffa as equals, even allies, in the war against the Der'kal. Almost at once, the two 304s break communications and turn to face the Phoenix, charging their weapons to attack the "disloyal" humans. Seeing no other choice, Colonel Sobol orders the alternate reality drive fired, and just as the other cruisers open fire, a bright flash of white light moves them to a different universe, one thankfully free of intimidating enemy ships.

This reality, however, has an equally-disturbing sight for the team; just ahead of them floats the wreckage of a Daedalus-class ship, complete with the word "PHOENIX" emblazoned on its side. In horror, Vala quietly mentions that she thinks they'd be better off in their own world, a sentiment quickly echoed by everyone else on the bridge. This science-trip certainly proved to be an amazing victory for theoretical physics, but this is simply one terror too many. Setting the alternate-reality drive for their original universe, Jason glances once back at the destroyed-Phoenix, then hits the activation button...

Later, the ship once again orbits Earth, mercifully safe and sound. At the ISGC, Mitchell explains to one of the soldiers that they borrowed a ha'tak hyperdrive from Chulak, the inhabitants of which were understandably shocked to see their vessel just pop into existence right in the middle of the Free Jaffa fleet. Sitting at the briefing room table, Daniel asks what Dr. Talbot is, but no one seems to know. Standing near her office, Jason notices an envelope lying on her desk, with a sticky-note on it reading "For Phoenix crew." Curious, he grabs it and slides out the letter inside, scanning it with widening eyes. He calls Sam over and hands it to her, saying that he thinks SG-1 should see it.

Then the scene fades, to be replaced with one of the team, Jason, numerous ISGC personnel, and many familiar faces from the organization's past all standing outside on a cloudy day in what appears to be a cemetery. They all wear formal, dark clothing, and many of them have tears in their eyes. Dr. Talbot is standing just ahead of them, herself standing with eyes closed and a somber expression on her face. The camera pans to reveal a pastor speaking over a casket that is being prepared to be lowered into a grave, and as the camera zooms in, the picture on top of the coffin becomes recognized:

                            General George Hammond.
