Debatable. A vehicle would have done little good against those turrets; even a tank. And against a glider it could be argued that smaller, more mobile individuals with SAMs would be more effective than a large vehicle.

Still, it is plausible. But we must remember, above all, that this is the USAF and the USMC we're dealing with. Not the Army.

                I have a quick question.

With Atlantis canceled is there anyway we will see a Continuning SGA?

I really like your writing and feel you could put the show with justice....

Not sure yet. Someone else already started a "Continuing SGA" thread so... but I'd really like to, so I guess we'll see after "Enemy At the Gate."

Now, I really need to get that episode finished... you think this is a long wait, just wait until "Star By Star" premieres... that's gonna take a while...

                            14x13 "Tet"
Synopsis: A series of devastating attacks on space thought to be secured leaves the Alliance reeling, and SG-1 is pinned down in the middle of it all.
                            Spoiler:
((60 second recap of "Covenant," "Total War," and "Coventry"))

Dr. Talbot and Colonel Carter are making their way down the hallway of the ISGC toward the gate room, the latter dressed for a mission offworld. As they enter the embarkation area, Daniel, Vala, and Mitchell all come into view, also geared-up for a trip through the stargate. The mission is a rather simple one; head to the Alpha Site and evaluate the progress of the X-302b prototype, a hybrid bombercraft that will serve as a complement to the existing F-302 starfighters. Talbot turns to face the control room and tells the technicians there to begin to dialing sequence. As the team waits for the wormhole to form, Mitchell claps his hands together and announces how excited he is to finally take a ride in a fighter again after so long stuck on the ground.

When the vent horizon finally does form, Talbot pulls Carter aside and tells her to be careful out there. Tok'ra intelligence has picked up increased communications chatter from the Der'kal now that they've hacked their system ("Coventry") and they think something's up. As soon as they know more, she'll dial the Alpha Site and update SG-1, but until then, she reminds Sam just to keep an eye out. With that in mind, Carter leads the other three members of the group up the ramp and through the gate, leaving Talbot to head back to the control room.

Light-years away, SG-1 arrives at the Alpha Site, now fully repaired from the android-version of Zanous Garrin's attack two years before ("Occam's Razor"). Stepping away from the DHD to greet them is Colonel Elizabeth Williams, the new head of the facility following Colonel Shefield's untimely death at the hand of a loose human-form Replicator (also "Occam's Razor"). She welcomes them to her base and motions for the team to follow her out of the gate room and out into the hanger bay. Vala, looking around, asks if the defenses on this place have been updated at all since Jonas Quinn traveled back in time and warned them that the Alpha Site would remain the last bastion of human power by the war's end ("The Time Traveler"), but Williams says the United Nations has been hard-pressed to spare the money with the financial situation on Earth.

In the hanger itself, a man is standing in front of what looks like a design-modified F-203. It's slightly bulkier, and has larger and more numerous missiles mounted on the underside of its wings, but other than that, appears quite similar. Carter smiles and calls out to the man, who immediately turns, revealing Alec Coulson, the businessman who once attempted to reveal the Stargate Program before the world was ready for it ("Covenant"). He looks to have grown a slight beard, and is obviously more learned in galactic affairs than he was when he tried to expose the great secret of the USAF. Indeed, he goes so far as to warmly embrace Samantha Carter and Daniel Jackson, then shakes Vala and Mitchell's hands with vigor, saying how pleased he is to see them all. He's quite proud of his prototype, and he's happy they could all make it for the demonstration.

Stepping back, he explains that this is the first of a line of bombercraft equal in strength to a Jaffa al'kesh but more similar in size to an F-302. Coulson points to the myriad missiles, saying that each is a naquadriah-enhanced warhead, with one fourth of them being nuclear, as well. With this wide array of extremely potent munitions, Coulson believes Earth now has an effective way to counter the Der'kal's largest warships, without needing to risk 304s in risky combat situations. Coming up to the experimental ship, Mitchell runs his hand along the underside and grins, asking when he can take her for a spin. Daniel quickly pulls him away and recommends that wait until after the other representatives coming to the unveiling arrive, and they walk off to join Coulson and a small group of researchers back inside the Alpha Site.

Meanwhile, halfway across the galaxy, one of the Der'kal superships floats amidst a large fleet of escort vessels in deep space. The gargantuan craft is menacing looking, surely, and could no doubt devastate any ship in the Alliance command. Inside, on the bridge, an alien commander stands examining a screen showing a small, blue-green planet. One of his subordinates approaches from behind and bows his head, saying that the Tok'ra have intercepted the communications burst from the armada, as planned. As the commander acknowledges, it becomes clear that the Der'kal are well-aware the Alliance now has the ability to eavesdrop on their channels, and in fact they seems to be using that to form some sort of plan.

Closing out the image of the planet on the viewscreen, the commander orders the ship and its escorts make the jump into hyperspace. He also demands a message be relayed to "the others," telling them to make their moves as well. Turning to his control station, he snarls viciously, boldly stating that this day will be forever remembered as the day the end began.

Back at the Alpha Site, Alec Coulson is getting up on a small stage that has been set up next to the F-302b, preparing to present his triumph to the crowd. SG-1 stands at the back of the group, behind the politicians, military advisors, and researchers who have assembled to hear about the next step in the space program. He first attributes the great success of humanity in space to the work of leading physicists such as Doctor/Colonel Samantha Carter and Doctor Rodney McKay, reminding many in the crowd that it was their insights that helped lead directly to the development of the X-302 and X-303. Then he explains that he thinks the 302b will revolutionize the way Earth fights its enemies, and that...

He is stopped mid-sentence as an alarm suddenly blares in the hanger, causing everyone to look around, confused. Worried, Carter and SG-1 fall back to the control room, where they see five out of seven chevrons lit up on the stargate. A small defense team has been assembled nearby, and Colonel Williams is manning the control console for the dialing computer. Mitchell asks what's going on, and the base commander tells him that there's an unscheduled offworld activation; someone's dialing in, and it's not Earth. Pulling out their P90s, the team steps forward, with Daniel asking who knows the Alpha Site's location and address. Carter says that only Alliance officials know, and of course people on Earth, but that's it.

When the seventh chevron locks, the gate activates and the defense team takes a step back. Williams radios through, asking if this is an Alliance-related dial-in, but gets nothing but static in reply. For a long moment, nothing happens. But then three green pulses of energy shoot through the gate, two of them catching members of the defense team and bringing them to the ground, stunned. Shocked, everyone looks on as Der'kal warriors march through the portal, firing on the soldiers and blasting equipment all around the room. Williams, horrified, grabs her radio and shouts over the PA system to evacuate the facility, then pulls out a pistol and opens fire along with everyone else.

Behind Carter, Coulson skids into the room, asking what's going on, then quickly leaps back into the hallway as a flurry of plasma heads his way. Sam yells for him to get out of here, then calls for everyone to get out of the gate room so they can seal it off. Williams, Mitchell, Jackson, and Vala all rush out, and Sam just manages to slip out as the Der'kal spot what she's doing. Carter waves at the two remaining marines to hurry, but it's no good; they're stunned almost at once, and she has no choice but to seal off the blast door with them inside.

Now trapped in the gate room, the Der'kal make their way over to the control consoles for the stargate and begins jacking their own computer systems in, no doubt hoping to override the system. Their commander, a burly alien warrior, steps through the gate and strides down the steps, surveying the scene before him. Noticing that the human troops are only stunned, he snarls at his men to set their rifles for kill, then orders them to begin taking down that blast door. They have a job to do here, after all.

In the hallway, Vala asks how in the world the Der'kal located the Alpha Site. Daniel reminds her that one of their agents was working on Earth for weeks, possibly months, and there's no telling what information he got ("The First Amendment"). That was no doubt how they figured out this place's location. Out of breath, Williams sourly remarks that perhaps Earth should have given her a bigger budget after all, though she mutters that at this rate, the Alpha Site definitely won't be the last bastion of human power in any future.

Sam nods, and says they need to get these people out of here, fast. Mitchell grabs Coulson and yanks him into the hanger, saying they can probably head for the munitions bunker a few clicks away ("Occam's Razor"). Just as they reach the hanger doors, though, an explosion rocks the entire mountain; there are two Der'kal gunships hovering just outside, firing into the facility!

With both exits cut off, Carter shouts for options. Colonel Williams suggests sending out a subspace distress call, but Daniel thinks it'll be useless. If there are enemy gunships outside, he reasons, then there must be a cruiser parked in orbit, and they could just jam the transmission. Not seeing many choices left to them, Carter glances back toward the gate room and tells everyone to head for the elevator; their best bet is to make it to the lower level control room. From there, they should be able to counter whatever commands the Der'kal send through the system, as well as seal off the area from attack. Seeing that the blast doors (both in the hanger and gate room) are starting to buckle, Mitchell grabs Coulson and leads everyone toward the lifts.

Inside the gate room, Der'kal warriors continue to arrive through the portal. Growing frustrated with the blast doors still blocking his way, the commander walks forward and places a small, gleaming device on the metal plates. He presses a single button then steps back as a massive explosion balloons outward from the device, shattering the doors and revealing the hallway beyond. Satisfied, the commander orders his men to fan out; he knows SG-1 is still in the facility, and he wants them found and killed as quickly as possible. With his warriors on the move, he turns back to watch the stargate as more reinforcements arrive.

On Heliopolis, one of the surviving Serrakin is working a long-range sensory terminal, examining fleet distribution figures for the Alliance. Suddenly, the screen clears and a 2-D image of the Milky Way appears, rapidly zooming in on the region around Dakara. The Serrakin watches, confused, as one of the planets still in Free Jaffa space suddenly starts flashing red. Then another one does. And another. And another...

In deep space, far away from the Alliance headquarters, dozens of hyperspace windows above a world orbited by four ha'tak and a squadron of al'kesh. Der'kal warships of all sizes begin shooting out of the windows, bombarding the Jaffa vessels and taking up assault positions to attack the planet below. The scene then shifts to another Jaffa planet facing a similar fate, and then to a Tok'ra one also under siege. The message is clear; this is happening all across the galaxy, and there doesn't seem to be any way to stop it.

                              (More of "Tet.")

                              Spoiler:
Back at the Alpha Site, SG-1, Williams, and Coulsen step out of the elevator on one of the lower levels. The military personnel quickly fan out, guns at the ready, but no one's around. Emergency lighting has come on and alarms continue to sound, but otherwise the area is empty. Carter mentions that most of the workers down here would have gone upstairs to watch the X-302b presentation, which no doubt explains the absence of people here. Slightly comforted by that, they move into the corridor toward the secondary control center.

Mitchell comments that they need to find a way to warn Earth about what's going on, especially if the Der'kal are jamming targets' communications; any other planets falling under attack will be unable to sound the alarm. Coming around a bend, Carter points out the control room entrance up ahead, and the group picks up their pace. They enter the chamber slowly, glancing around warily to make sure no enemies have penetrated this far somehow, but it, too, is clear. Vala flips the lightswitch, illuminating the room, and Carter quickly slides into the chair in front of the nearest computer terminal. She boots up the display and accesses the base's defensive protocols, scanning for something useful.

Standing at the other end of the room, Daniel asks if they could use the nerve gas dispensers that the Alpha Site personnel used to kill Garrin's soldiers when he attacked the base two years ago. Williams grimaces, saying that while it's a good idea, the canisters were never refilled. And besides, they'd just be caught in the gas, too. But then Sam stumbles upon a file in the database, and has another idea; Area 51 shipped revised canisters of the Agent One virus ("Xenocide") here for study... if they could insert the chemical into the gas dispensers, they could use it to clear the entire facility of Der'kal within minutes.

Mitchell shouts out against it at once, horrified that Carter would even suggest that, considering the last time the virus was used, it killed all other forms of non-Earthborn life along with the Der'kal. But Carter explains that this is a revised form of the chemical, redesigned so that it kills the aliens and them alone. Using it now would be completely safe.

A cold silence descends over the room, as everyone keenly remembers the emotional strife that divided them after Agent One was revealed to them a year ago. Now that they know a version of the chemical capable of its full potential has been devised, they are all no-doubt wondering how long it will be before they must relive that nightmare. In the here and now, though, Colonel Williams agrees that it may be the only way to protect the base and preserve the secrets kept here. She volunteers to head up two levels to where the gas canisters are and load the virus in, despite Mitchell's protests. Sighing, Cameron gives up, resigning himself to letting it happen.

Handing Williams his P90, Daniel asks what else they can do to help out. The Colonel says that there's a gate room lockout system, but it's on the upper levels, on the same floor as the gate room itself. If they could trip it, the Der'kal wouldn't be able to do anything, and full control of the facility would be transferred to Carter. When asked why they didn't do that when they were up there, Williams explains that the room where the lockout is is on the other side of the gate room from the hanger bay; there was no way to get past the aliens to trip it, and there probably isn't now, either. Just then, the computer monitors flicker, and Sam frantically begins typing. The Der'kal are trying to siphon power out of the lower levels, no doubt to keep them from doing anything, and she can't let that happen. Glancing over at Mitchell, she says trying to trip the lockout mechanism would really help... if they can get to it. Nodding, Cameron says he'll try to find a way, and grabs Jackson. Together, they head down the hall.

Carter brings up a map of their level on her monitor and points out where the modified Agent One is being stored to Williams. The other Colonel nods and heads out, saying she'll pick it up and then take the lift up to the canister room.

On Earth, Dr. Talbot is reading a message from Heliopolis outlining the extent of a massive Der'kal offensive underway on the fringes of their territory; a total of forty-nine planets have been attacked, mostly ones with low levels of defenses, and there's just no way to defend all that space at once. The Nox and Jaffa are coordinating efforts to send aid to as many as they can, but the chances of success are fairly slim. Worried that one of their non-Alliance allies may be in danger, Talbot asks the gate technician on duty to give her a list of the assaulted planets, but the man freezes at the third one. It's P7X-112... the Alpha Site. Shocked, Talbot asks him to double-check, but there's no mistaking it. The Earth facility is in trouble, and SG-1 is in for the duration.

Meanwhile, Mitchell and Jackson are prodding through empty labs in the lower levels of the Alpha Site, trying to find a stealthy way to reach the gate room above. Flashing his P90s light into a storage closet, Cameron asks when Daniel thinks they were going to be told that a revised variant of Agent One had been created. Jackson just sighs, not really wanting to cause a problem but knowing there's no avoiding the truth. He guesses that the people back home were holding it back for a major atrocity to hit, therefore rallying the planet into war fever and eliminating any possible protest to the xenocidal virus this time around.

As Daniel passes by another empty lab, he frowns and backtracks into the room. Glancing around with his flashlight, he notices an air duct vent that comes down from the ceiling, and calls Mitchell over. Pointing out the shaft, he asks what the odds are of it traveling straight up... which are apparently fairly high, considering how the ISGC's vents are placed (they go straight to the top of the mountain, allowing fresh air to be brought in or for stale air to be expunged). There's a good chance that they can shimmy up the shaft to the top level, bypassing the elevators and popping out behind the Der'kal. Mitchell isn't 100% sure it'll work, but he agrees it's their best bet and gives Daniel a boost to get inside.

Across the level, Carter is radioing Colonel Williams to see how she's doing. The Alpha Site commander is upstairs two levels, stepping out of the elevator with her P90 at the ready, glancing around for any sign of Der'kal. Not finding any, she starts down the hallway toward the gas canister room, telling Sam it looks clear so far. She barely rounds the bend in the hall, though, before she hears people coming. Not seeing any other choice, Williams snaps off her headset and darts into a small closet, easing the door shut just in time to avoid being spotted by two Der'kal warriors patrolling the area. Once she's sure the aliens are gone, Williams slips back into the hallway and hurries along, telling Sam to be on the lookout for enemy warriors finding other ways down to her section of the base. Carter replies that she's already locking down the elevators to her level, and Vala, from the other main terminal, affirms that she's busily searching the base computer for alternate access routes. They should be alright.

Edging around another corner, Williams swears; a single alien soldier is examining a security interface just outside the room she needs to get at. She could probably take him by surprise, but it would no doubt alert any other warriors in the area. Thinking on her feet, she doubles back to an armory on this level and searches for something to use. After a minute, she grins and pulls out a Goa'uld stun grenade, then heads back to where the warrior is. She quickly activates the grenade, then quietly places it on the floor and rolls it down the hallway, immediately pulling back behind the corner so she won't be affected. The warrior, oblivious, continues to try and work the security terminal until he hears the tell-tale hum of the grenade warming up. He scarcely has time to turn around in surprise when it goes off, and he is suddenly blinded by the bright blast of light. From previous experiences, we know the grenade doesn't knock Der'kal out, but it gives Williams the edge she needs to kick the warrior to the ground and use the butt of her P90 to do the same job.

Smiling, Williams radios Carter and tells her she's about to start loading the virus. She pulls a small vial of liquid out of her vest pocket and unscrews the cap, then hooks it into a rather large machine sitting nearby, inside the canister room. Then she presses a green button next to the machine and... nothing happens. Frowning, she asks Sam what's going on. Back in the control room, Carter is looking over the log she's just opened, and says that the Der'kal have shut-down the gas dispenser system. She'll need a few minutes to override that, and tells Williams to sit tight.

Also hard at work, Daniel and Mitchell are almost to the top of the ventilation shaft, but it's hard going shimmying up inch by inch with only friction keeping them from falling down to the bottom. Cameron mutters that this has to be the worst experience he's ever had on SG-1, and Jackson jokingly reminds him of a time when a sloth-like alien creature chased the Colonel into a mud river. Annoyed, Mitchell tells him to keep climbing.

Still in the gas canister room, Williams is fiddling with her P90 while she waits for Carter to give her the go-ahead. Suddenly, she hears someone outside. Freezing, she slowly moves to the door and pulls it open just enough to peer out, and sees two Der'kal warriors looking over the body of the one she knocked out. They're talking in their own language to someone over their radios, and she assumes they're telling their superiors that one of the humans has been in this area. Speaking as quietly as possible, she radios Carter and Vala and informs them of her situation. Sam grimaces, saying she'll need another minute to finish the override.

But it looks like that's time Williams won't have. The Der'kal approach the canister room and yank the door open, revealing the human, herself crouched behind the dispenser machine with her P90 aimed right at the aliens. She fires off as many rounds as she can, managing to score a lucky hit on one warrior that brings him to the ground. But the second quickly gets his rifle up and shoots Williams in the chest, knocking her against the wall and forcing her to drop her weapon. The wound is deep, but it looks to have missed anything vital. Snarling, the alien soldier grabs her arms and legs and drags her from the room, shouting into his radio.

Back in the control room, Vala is calling Williams' name into the radio, but she soon realizes it's no good; she's not answering. Carter swears, finally finishing the override, and mutters what a lot of good that did them. She taps her headset and asks Mitchell and Jackson what their situation is, and is relieved to hear that they're finally on the upper level again, emerging from the shaft two rooms over from the gate room. They slowly make their way into the hallway, hearing Der'kal all over the area, and slip into the right chamber. As Mitchell hurriedly activates the lockout command, Daniel peers around the corner into the gate room itself, suppressing a gasp at the sheer number of aliens in there.

(End of "Tet," see two posts up for start.)

                                Spoiler:
At last, Cameron finishes and hits the activation button. Carter radios that the command worked and that she now has full control of the Alpha Site's computer network. Jackson is about to congratulate Mitchell on making a good team when a green plasma bolt whizzes into the room and slams into him, stunning him. Mitchell whirls around, P90 raised, to see the Der'kal commander standing there, pistol in hand. The alien shouts for his other men, but before Cameron can be stunned, the Colonel leaps into the hallway, sprinting off toward the room where he and Daniel came out of the ducts.

With enemies on his tail, Mitchell skids into the room and pulls himself into the duct, then starts sliding down towards the lower levels of the base. He shouts to Sam for ideas as he descends, but she doesn't have many for him. Then Vala points out that he could activate the gas himself on the way down, fulfilling Williams' job and wiping out the incursion. But Cameron protests, saying he abhors the very idea of Agent One, how can they even ask that of him? Carter, though, is on Vala's side; this might be their last chance to save the Alpha Site. Giving up, Mitchell agrees to do it.

A few minutes later, Cameron slides out of the vents on the level containing the gas chamber. He's about to enter the hallway when a familiar voice comes over the radio; Colonel Ryan Arouca, former commander of the BC-303 Espoir, a French ship destroyed in SG-1's attempt to liberate a human planet from the Der'kal ("Resistance"). When Mitchell asks where the Hell he is, Arouca replies that he's in orbit, aboard the newly-built French DSC-304 Liberté. He explains that the ISGC dispatched him and his crew upon learning of the Der'kal attack on the Alpha Site, and he's here to extract them. High above the planet, his ship engages two alien cruisers there, trading blows with them while trying to get within beaming range. Arouca tells SG-1 to get ready to beam, because they can't do this for long and really need to get out of here fast.

Closing out Arouca, Carter tells Mitchell to trip the virus dispenser so they can leave, but he doesn't move. Whispering to himself, he remembers that the base self-destruct is one level up... then turns and jumps back into the ventilation shaft.

A moment later, he emerges on the next floor, running down the hallway into a room with a nuclear device in the middle of the chamber, just next to a single computer console. Carter demands to know what he's doing, but Cameron ignores her, flipping the switch to prime the nuke and setting the timer for ten seconds. Just before hitting the button to send it counting down, Mitchell radios the Liberté and tells them to lock onto all broadcasting subspace beacons and beam them up, then presses the activation stud. Downstairs, Sam sees the notice that the auto-destruct has come online, but can't override it before she's beamed away, along with Vala, Cameron, Daniel, Coulson (who had been with Sam and Vala) and Williams.

High above, the group materializes onto the 304's bridge (with Williams Daniel looking around in confusion). At once, Sam grabs Mitchell's vest and asks him what he was thinking, then everyone pauses and looks out the window as a small, bright flash can be seen on the planet below... the Alpha Site is gone. Pushing between the two other Colonels, Arouca says they'll be time to debate this back home, and orders his crew to jump to Earth. This mission is over.

Some time later, Cameron is sitting in the mess hall, staring out at the hyperspace tunnel. Sighing, he turns to the door to see Sam coming to sit with him, but before she can say anything, he apologizes. He knows the logical way to save the base would have been to use Agent One and just wipe out all the Der'kal, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Carter says it's alright, she understands, and apparently so does Earth; the subspace message they just received from Dr. Talbot confirms that the United Nations has already acquitted Mitchell of any sort of reprimanding for his actions, and agree that the facility needed to be "purged by any means necessary."

Still, Cameron's sorry that it had to go, especially due to the loss of the X-302b. But that's where Sam actually has good news; Colonel Arouca knew the prototype was here and beamed it up right before them. They may never have gotten to see it fly, but at least it survived. Mitchell grins, saying he's still going to get Coulson to let him fly it... then somberly asks what the United Nations had to say about the supply of virus they found. Carter replies that she excluded that detail from her mission report, and therefore no one outside of SG-1, Alec Coulson, and Colonel Williams know they located the supply at all. That said, the United Nations released a statement saying that they were "very sorry they hadn't had an opportunity to test the weapons researched at the Alpha Site on such a wonderful opportunity." Neither Sam nor Cameron think they were talking about the F-302b...
