there are three types of canonists
1) those who believe that ONLY the producers can come up with anything stargate, and these people, sadly, will kill stargate, since there is nothing more being made by the producers, stargate dies with them

2) those who believe in following canon to continue, and even use canon episodes to come up with new ideas

3) those who begin with stargate canon as a basis, but then go outside of the concept, and lead things down a completely new and uncharted road

as i am not a fan of going outside of canon, i do see #3s to be just as legit, though just not my cup of tea

i personally pull from canon, using the inconsistencies, and say that, either there were mitigating factors causing something to work a certain way, or, since Carter and McKay are HUMAN SCIENTISTS, well, they can be wrong, and thus, some of the inconsistencies can be brought into mainstream use......and maybe that is the way these things are really suppose to work........or maybe the circumstances that caused a thing to happen, those circumstance can be replicated, such as the wormhole intersecting with a solar flare

i can understand why the #1s want things to be left unchanged, in the Stargate realm, (i can't say Universe), the producers are God, and what they say is canon.....and if God closes the canon, it is closed. i can respect that

it is the same concept in the Abrahamic religions
you have the Mormons, they accept Torah, prophets, Writings, New Testament, and the book of mormon
i.e., the stargate movie, SG-1, Atlantis, Universe, even the cartoon
you have the christians, they accept Torah, prophets, Writings, and New Testament
i.e., the stargate movie, SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe
you have the Jews, they accept Torah, prophets and Writings
i.e., SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe
you have the Samaritans and even modern day Karaites, they accept Torah
SG-1, OR Atlantis, OR Universe, OR the Stargate movie from 1994

the problem with all of these groups, is that they will bash one another, because ONLY what they do is right

ok ok ok, i can be a bit testy with people when i ask for something specific, and a person wants to give me an idea that i already thought of......i was asking for something specific: i ask for a CD and i am given a mini disc.......i don't have a mini disc player, i have a CD player.......and i NEED the CD player because it has the ability to repeat the CD, a mini disc doesn't have that ability.....so yes, i get testy, this is one of my flaws, something that i have to work on

But come on, Stargate is Stargate
We are here, in these forums, because other people do not understand our passion for Stargate.....we want to talk about stargate, and other people don't, so here we are.......are we going to isolate ourselves even further by saying that this person or that person is going against Stargate.......come on......after all, lets face it, it is just fiction......but we do find comfort in it

By the way, the point of canon is that it's what happened. Everything not in the show is just Extended Universe, not canon.

as true as what you are saying, there are always interpretations, and people work around it
for instance, in 1969, SG-1 somehow materialized without a gate, this HAPPENED, despite what Carter says about the need of the second gate
you also have in both the movie and Torment of Tantalus where a person or a thing is not completely in the event horizon, yet it atleast begins the trip, and in the case of Torment, completes the trip.....Ernest, if the gate had remained on, could have played tug of war with the scientists still on earth
Carter and McKay say that they absolutely can not happen

at any rate, the thread's purpose is to be able to give people, who are type 2s or 3s, a place to go, and not constantly get belittled for their ideas

i would like to hear about additional ideas, but i would also like for it to be known that i am not interested in hearing people say "you can't do that blah blah blah blah"

if canon is MERELY what actually happened, then, lets discuss what ACTUALLY happened, and NOT what the scientists claim is how a stargate works......lets look at what actually happened

i actually want to discuss what happened in the episodes. I don't want to get:
"that was just not in the prop budget"
or
"there are inconsistencies all over the place"
or
"it was an accident of the writers"
or any number of other excuses that people say to get around what is actually on the screen. They want their interpretation of canon, and anything outside of that, they try to dismiss in so many ways
well, i am looking to chat with people who choose to NOT dismiss these things

i'm sorry, but i'm gonna be one of those guys and say that, unfortunately, stargate isn't very consistent.

This isn't something i pull out of my ass: i've had a number of debates spanning hundreds of posts, and eventually stargate breaks down after the 3rd or 4th iteration of "why not".

i know it isn't consistent
but that doesn't mean that after wards, we can't come up with ideas and run with them...i try to keep my rationales based in the episodes
