Interesting article, so John Hurt is confirmed as the 9th Doctor.

Quote:

John Hurt will play the Ninth Doctor in the 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary episode.

The 73-year-old actor's alter-ego will be a regeneration of the Time Lord, which the character has forgotten about, in the special after Christopher Eccleston - who played the ninth incarnation of the Doctor in 2005 - refused to return for the episode after holding talks with showrunner Steven Moffat.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "John will play the real Ninth Doctor. Christopher Eccleston has always been thought of as the Ninth Doctor but now that John has been revealed as the Ninth Doctor, it shuffles Eccleston's Doctor to be the 10th Time Lord, Tennant the 11th and Smith the 12th.

"It also means the Doctor's time is running out as he can only regenerate 12 times."

John revealed earlier this week he will play "part of the Doctor" in a "kind of trinity" with Matt Smith and David Tennant, but the pair's Doctors will initially refuse to accept John's character is one of them until it becomes apparent thanks to their sonic screwdrivers.

The source explained: "Steven loves a complex plot and there will be plenty of surprises along the way.

"The reason the Doctor has forgotten his ninth incarnation will become clear but it's to do with the Time War and his shame over his behaviour in it.

"Tennant and Smith's Doctors will at first refuse to accept Hurt is them -- until their sonic screwdrivers confirm it and announce, 'He's us. He's the ninth us'."

John's Doctor has deliberately been given a style similar to both the Eighth Doctor - who was portrayed by Paul McGann - and Christopher's Time Lord.

A source said: "John was given a very familiar look that goes half way between two regenerations."

G'day,

In a week that will no doubt see heads roll at BBC America, someone's job is probably also in jeopardy following the leak of The Underwater Menace episode 2, recovered in 2011 and not yet released on DVD, despite assurances from BBC Classic Who DVD manager, Dan Hall of a quick though "appropriate" release.

In 2011 at the British Film Institute's "Missing Believed Wiped" annual event, the audience was shocked to hear the news of the recover of TUM2, and the Hartnell episode, "Airlock" (the 3rd instalment of Galaxy 4). The two 16mm reels of film had been sitting in a UK film collector's attic for decades before a chance conversation with a Radio Times reporter resulted in the find.

The Galaxy 4 instalment was released without any fanfare earlier this year, as a special feature of The Aztecs Special Edition DVD release, complete with a still-photo reconstruction, combined with minor animation. The Underwater Menace however, which is now half complete together with episode 3 which had always remained in the BBC archive, is still yet to receive even a hint of a release date, or what form that release will take. Following the announcement of The Moonbase's animation for its 2 missing episodes, it is hoped that TUM will receive the same.

Presumably someone at the BBC who had access to a digital copy of the episode decided that enough was enough, and leaked the episode online. Admittedly, it may possibly be like the leaked copy of "Rose" back in 2005 - an attempt by the BBC to create a buzz...

This is the second big-screen screening of WHO here in Australia this year, to celebrate 50 years of WHO...

I missed the first one (though wasn't that enthralled), but this time round I decided I couldn't go past a fairly decent Dalek story - with Asylum and Manhattan double-featuring...

I'll be attending the Sunday screening in Geelong... Looks like it's Saturday most other places.

Might have to bust out the scarf... and my son can wear his too...

Cheers

Each ep seems like a filler to me. Previous seasons each ep expanded upon on another and revealed a bit more about the storyline. The last few eps nothing has been revealed which is disappointing. Also it would be nice to have more River! In previous seasons with Rory and Amy there seemed to be more focus to the story. There hasnt been much to challenge to Doctors morals as well. Last season had a great ep set in the wild west with the Doctor facing his morals.

This review is spoiler-free, thankfully!

'So… Did anyone else get their pre-order early? This is a HUGE mistake via BBC America, one I’m very happy to be victimized by. I get to see Nightmare in Silver AND The Name of the Doctor early!
So, I feel like I have the awesome power of being able to spoil something really really big in the palm of my hands but I refuse sir, I REFUSE! Just know that The Name of the Doctor is a seriously game-changing episode. And that Clara’s explanation will BLOW classic Whovians out of the water'

When they were first created on Pete's world I am wondering if the guy that supposedly invents them had been influenced telepathically by the real Cybermen from Mondas? I know that's not likely but I have wondered that.
Also what became of that version of the Cybermen and will they meet the ones from Pete's world?

As Doctor Who nears it's 50th anniversary, I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread to celebrate and appreciate one of the best television shows ever made.

What this thread is for is to enjoy all aspects of Doctor Who, both old and new, and share that enthusiasm with other fans; a place to pay tribute to all the wonderful stories and characters we have enjoyed over the last 50 years. Anything related to Doctor Who is welcome - in words, pictures, videos, recommendations etc. If you love it, post it!

Important: This thread is not a place to abuse previous or current show runners, writers, characters, actors, episodes, stories, plots lines etc. Nor is it a place to compare one thing detrimentally with another. There are plenty of other places to air criticism should you have any, but this thread isn't one of them. Any transgression will be deemed off topic and reported to the Moderators for removal.

In "Asylum of the Daleks". The doctor meets a awesome hacker trapped in the body of a Dalek. She rescues the group by erasing the Doctor's existence from the memory of all Daleks.

Following this, the Doctor has the brillant idea to erase all evidence of himself from the universe so that no-one will know who he is.

And here is where we get a massive paradox.

The doctor created the universe because of the Pandorica which was a trap designed for him because everyone in the universe was pissed at him.

The exploding Tardis also happened because of that event.

If nobody ever knew that the Doctor existed, then they would have no reason to create a trap for him. Which would mean that the old universe was never destroyed and re-built, and rebuilt from his memories in his own image of things only he knew about because Amy didn't have a full knowledge of everything in her universe as stuff was eaten by the cracks.

The cracks in the universe never existed, which means that the Doctor would never have met Amy (because she was only interested in him because she was living in a big-ass house that was un-making her relatives from existence.)

If he never met Amy, her and Rory would never have given birth to River Song the Timelord hybrid. If River wasn't a hybrid, she wouldn't have grown up around Rory and Amy and made them realize how they felt about eachother, thus negating her own existence.

And also if he didn't exist in anyone's memories there was no need to be waging war against him and for him to go back and fix things .....In other words paradox as far as I can tell.
