View Full Version : Meaning of Life Stuff- What does Stargate mean to you?

To me, Stargate means the future of possibility. Where we've been, where we are, and where we can go. That's one of the reasons I try to reflect that personality, that goodness of she show, in these forums, and I hope others will take up that banner with me.
Stargate is so cool because it is engaging, it's from the heart, and deep down, it is warm and good.

Am I the only one who thinks Stargate means something? ;) lol
Even if it's shoot-'em up action.

No, you're not. I've actually just finished writing a fic about the ways Stargate has impacted my life. Totally serious, of course... ;) I'll post a link once the fic is online.

Yeah, i totally agree. I also like the idea that we belong to something greater. That there are others out there and our problems are insignificant in comparison. :)

The idea that humans have seeded the galaxy, and developed/changed without the influences their counterparts experienced on earth is something I find utterly fascinating.

You guys are so right. The Fifth Race was a really special show. It told us just those things.

Well, I use it in my sociology classes. I used "Allegiance" to illustrate race relations. The kids really like the action, but the message isn't lost on them either.

I think that sums up pretty well how I feel about Stargate too. It's good, without being preachy, if that makes sense. It makes you think too, and that's something I appreciate in television, there's not a lot of shows that do that!

I agree with everything that has been said, but SG1 also means family, teamwork, professionalism and people that respect each other, and treat each other with respect. How many television shows are so respectful of women and their capabilities?
A friend of mine started watching the show last fall, because of my minor involvement in it. She became a huge fan. Last night, at a party, she told us that "Stargate SG1" helped get her through her divorce.
I love space and technology, and special effects, but what I like best about the show is it's positive message about the great potential in humanity.
Of course, I like RDA too!

This is a great forum. It attracts nice intelligent people. And there are always great laughs to be found.
I just found out about the reputation thing. My awards today go to ...drum roll...you, Darrin and Gipsy for hard work, and creating interesting threads. Did I forget anyone? I'm also giving one to Major Clanger for making me laugh.

Stargate SG-1, to me, signifies the only TV show on Sky One worth it's salt. Seriously, they never show Buffy or Angel any more. But every day, at 6AM, I can rely on the Stargate to deliver a slice of sci-fi ass-kicking, with some of the finest dialogue and filming around.
Not to mention the FX budget blows my mind.

To me Stargate means a world of possibilities. To see how other races and cultures have developed in a different environment is very interesting. And I find the AU eps to be fascinating. We all wonder at some time or the other "what if I had made a different decision?" An AU allows exploration of what the effects of that decision might be.
And also, to me Stargate will always mean really good friends, both those of the team, and those that I have made here.

Stargate is a great show. It has great purpose. One day everything in the show will probably become reality. Long-distance travel. Maybe not through a Stargate as such but possibly something simular. I'm guessing nothing anytime soon!

The realization of "not being alone" in the great big universe is humbling. To think differently is bold and ignorant to me. The stargate gives hope to the thought of that grander picture in the scheme of life.
I only hope humanity can last long enough.

there are a lot of eps. in stargate that show how every action has a consequence that you have to take care of. every choice that you make had better be well thought out because one wrong move can sc**w many people over...plus...my life would be bland without the show >.<

Stargate means alot to me and my family. The words I can think of include friendship, family, love, honor, courage, and some great adventures. It also helped us through our move last year especially through my involvement in a Stargate roleplay site and through different forums online.

It's always there. That's one of the great things about this show. After a long, hard day at work or at school, I can always count on an ep of Stargate (as long as my VCR is working properly!) to be there for a little pick-me-up. People always look at me weird when I say this, but it really does help. After watching the show so much, watching an episode is like spending an evening with friends. Getting to see what other people, albeit fictional, do, and how they make it through their own problems. This, in turn, helps me to stick with it and get through my own.
And it's not just the show itself, it's what it led to. Everyone on these forums are such great people, and are always there for someone in need. This has made quite a few days easier...I can come in here for a bite of good news or a laugh any day of the week, anytime of day. :)

I really agree with you, it's amazing what an hour here can do to your mood! There have been a few times I've just had a really awful day and I'm in a bad mood, especially at the moment because I've got big exams soon, but spending a little while here makes me feel a lot better...everyone is so nice, and you can always have a bit of a laugh!

That would be I, Hatusu! Thanks! As quick and painless as they look, the audio interview series takes quite a bit of effort to bring to the Internet. Transcribing takes at least an hour (the one I'm currently working on took two hours to transcribe). Not to mention cutting the audio and working out the formatting on the html, something I'm seriously new at.
But we're going off-topic! :)

Stargate is the best show if you love science fiction and have an extreme aversion to human built space ships that are capable of interstellar travel (I don't care how the aliens manage it to fly faster than light ;) )
And you don't spend the majority of an episode with the thought, "Well, this is stupid, that could never work." until you sit down to learn a little bit about the physics of a (theoretical) wormhole.

One of the first eps i ever saw must been The Light from season four, whilst with rewatching its not a great ep it really got to me at the time. I was depressed to the point of suicide and i dunno, despite the fact its a tv show, it affected me - made me some of the irrationality of what i was feeling and realise that in my life im not alone.

Stargate is fantastically amazing and (suprisingly for a sci-fi show) realistic... Notice in StarTrek how the federation ALWAYS win, more to the point how you could see it coming a mile off, and they always win by a big margin? Stargate atleast makes you bite your nails off, need a spare change of underwear and get you strangelling your siblings before they show you how it unfolds.
I have spent so many hours just watching SG-1 and my girlfriend is a HUGE SG-Geek too, and that's so great 'cause we argue for ages over the subject (in a healthy way) and, well, everything I enjoy in life Stargate usually helps me to see the best side of it...
... plus Jack O'Neill and Teal'c's lines are HILARIOUS!

Stargate is a very realistic viewing of military life. I an a cold war vet, US Navy. One thing I hate about most miltary shows is that no matter how tired or stressed out people are they look great, and are so sweet to each other. In my experience at the end of a week of intense overwork we were snapping at or ingnoring each other. We also, looked stressed and worn out. I think the way the actors loook confortable in the dress uniforms, don't play with the covers, and never smack the ribbbon bars into anything is great.
The show opens the doors to endless possiblties, but not without consquences. It also does not provide an easy answer for every problem. That is true to life. ABYDOSCITY2

I owe the GW forum for giving me an outlet of social (albeit virtual) contact this past year, when I've been feeling very isolated working at home alone all day. Thanks, everyone! (Remember that sing-along thread? That kept me sane that week...)
Plus, while it may not be meaning-of-life stuff, Stargate meant wearing a size 8 dress to my sister's wedding.
The fall before the wedding, SciFi started airing SG-1 every evening after work, when I'm most likely to spend an hour on the rowing machine. So I owe Stargate for keeping me distracted enough to continue rowing. :D

I think Stargate shows humanity at its best: exploring. The show is of a different caliber than ST Enterprise or other Sci-fi shows. In my opinion, Enterprise seems to be preachy at times and takes itself a little too seriously.
Also Stargate shows humanity at its worst, while obviously the goa'uld are evil, in one of the first episodes 105 First Commandment

There are several points I could mention for this thread, but one stands out to me the most: the ambiguous evil of some of the Goa'uld. I'm thinking in particular of good ol' Yu, and also another one whose name I won't mention cos it's a spoiler, where their evil isn't so cut and dried. And for that matter Apophis and his feelings for Amonet. The fact that the show portrays the bad guys as having good qualities (that are not necessarily just there to cover up more badness) is to me fascinating.

Well, since SciFi usually becomes science fact, I like the idea that we will one day reach the stars, and we may not have to travel in space ships to do it. Kind of makes me wish I wasn't born for another couple hundred years when the space shuttles are just the oldest ride at Disneyland.

To me, the 'meaning of life stuff' applies not only to Stargate but to much of science fiction television.
I feel like I owe a debt to Jim and Jean-Luc for making me the man I am today. Who knows who my role models might have been if I hadn't had two fake starship captains showing me what life is about? As different as O'Neill and Daniel are, they fall right in the same category with Picard, Kirk, Spock, Data, etc. because all these characters are good role models. They don't swear; they don't kill unless they have to, and sometimes not even then; they don't strive for material gain; they help wherever they can; they're not in a constant search to get high; in short, they have a moral compass and they try their best to follow it. Their moral compass isn't anchored by a legalistic text or divine knowledge, they simply know what every human (or Vulcan, android, Jaffa) knows deep down: the difference between right and wrong, and 'wrong' includes not helping to do right.
Not a day goes by that I don't wish more children watched science fiction. There is no genre that puts forth so many characters who would actually help you out if you were stranded on the side of the road. If just ten percent more of the population put others before themselves, the world would be a better place.

StarGate to me is about revolution, history and if you actually delve deeper into it instead of looking at it just as some Sci Fi show, you'd really see a darker meaning to a lot of the things they show - like the Goa'uld for instance. You watch the history channel and somewhere along the way you realize the Goa'uld are really mostly a metaphor ... and a very good one.

For me Sci-Fi has always been about giving you the possibilty to imagine "what if" and what would you do when faced with a problem. Wether its dealing with a parasitic alien race or modifying the phase deflector to emit an inverse tachyon pulese, Sci-Fi gives you the chace to take a step back from reality helps you see the bigger picture of who we are and where we are going. Stargate was one of the things that opened my mind from soley thinking about myself to the infinite universe around me.

No offense to any one here, but Stargate is to me, finally, a SciFi show that was worthy of taking the palce of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The reason I say this is not because of the FX or the action, because that's not why I liked ST:TNG or Stargate, but because of what it offers. It's a look at a world where the best doesn't turn out, where humans haven't come to a higher reasoning and are still doing things for the human reasons, and it shows some of our best and worst qualities.
I also like how it shows cultures where christanity <no offense> was not an influencing factor, where the Norse gods survived, where there is nothing to interfere with the natural process of that society evolving, whether it's slower or faster then us. That, and it's got the ability to make the cliche villian <Apophis and Anubis> look cool and actually threatening. But, that's besides the point. ;)

Stargate has absolutely no "meaning of life" content for me. It is a show. It is sometimes entertaining. It kills an hour where I don't have to think more serious thoughts. If I ever start having meaning of life thoughts from it, I think I'll stop watching!

The unknown can be scary, and I like seeing good win out over evil. We're usually the underdog, yet by using our minds, hearts and courage, we win time after time.
Stargate is fun and sometimes suspenseful, but in the end, it's always reassuring. Of course, I don't know if I'll feel as protected without Jack watching my six.....but we'll see!
