View Full Version : You're on a deserted island/planet...

FH's post got me thinking... You know the old "If you were on a deserted island (or planet, for 'Gaters), what [fill in the blank] would you want with you?" questions, with the blank being top five books, movies, person, etc. So I'm wondering what choices folks here would make.
My top five books (in no particular order):
Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
Eyre Affiar by Jasper Fforde
Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook by Josh Piven and somebody else (hey, something practical!)
Collected Stories by HP Lovecraft (being lost and alone isn't scary enough)
Top five movies (don't ask me how I'd play 'em without electricity):
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Galaxy Quest
Princess Bride
Secret of NIMH
Bringing Up Baby
Top five choices of who(m) I'd like to be trapped with (real or imaginary):
1. Jonas (betcha we could find ways to keep ourselves busy while waiting for rescue :D)
2. Luke (might be handy to have my own personal chef)
3. Jeff Corwin (dude can be annoying, but his knowledge could be useful)
4. MacGyver (not for his looks, but 'cause he'd get us home fast and he could probably also figure out a way for us to watch those movies)
5. Rupert from Survivor (don't like him much, but he can catch food)
If anyone has any other ideas for desertion lists, feel free to go wild. ;)

Jonas-(eye candy-he would look great in a loin cloth)
My son-(I've never spent the night away from the wee one I think the withdrawl might kill me.)
James Bond-(he could fix me drinks and he would have all sorts of nifty little gadgets)
Sam-(I would need a break from all of the testosterone and besides she could probably build a Stargate out of some palm trees.)
Vin Disel-(more eye candy. What can I say? I'm a shallow shallow person.)

US Army Survival Manual
Hmm... y'know, that's probably a lot more practical than the Worst Case book. And I actually own a copy of it. Maybe that'd be the better choice. MUCH better detail about edible plants and animals, setting snares and traps, how to start a fire... Smart idea, Capt. ;)

Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett.I'd take the lot,if poss! ;)

Lya of the Nox.Love her quiet wisdom and dry wit.She could maybe use her "Powers" to help us all,in case of emergency.
Robin Williams.Love his brand of "Hyper" humour. He'd keep our morale up!
Oma Desala. She'd be able to keep us all stimulated,by setting riddles. Then when we all got bored, she could turn us all into Beings of Light and lead us home.Just as long as she "Descended" us with our memories intact.I'd want to remember the whole experience!!
5 Random items to take:
Swiss Army Penknife.
P.90. Plus: see below.
Ammo and plenty of it,as shooting rabbits etc is far more humane than using Snares.Or, if Lya vanished these little extras,I'd go Vegetarian.

Most pointless things to do when trapped of an island:
- Calculate e to as many decimals as you can using a Maclaurin series, keep doing it every day while you're there... you might get a world record :P
- Re-enact everything from Stargate to the last episode of SG-1 you read spoilers for. You play Chevron Guy, use various island items as the rest of the cast.
- Start building a bridge... it might be long enough someday.
- Use the thousand degree furnace you brought with you to create bottles. Place maps to hidden treasure in them, guiding them to your island. Kill the treasure hunters and steal their pants.
- Dig a ravine to cut the island in two, then declare war on the other side of the island.

- Dig a ravine to cut the island in two, then declare war on the other side of the island.
Dude! That's so cool. Here are some more
Walk around the island trying to catch up with your footprints before the sea washes them away
Try and catapult yourself onto neighbouring islands using a supple bent-back palm tree.
Poke unsuspecting washed up jellyfish with a stick
repeat many times until they sting you and attempt to suck up your paralysed leg.
Put two crabs in a ring and watch them do battle until death. Eat the loser.
