I agree, he even looks different over the course of the episode - by the end he just really isn't Daniel anymore.

Did somebody say drooling? *looks around*
Two words. Absolute Power. That's what drooling's all about. It's not just that his personality's different, it's the way he carries himself, the clothes he wears, the decisions he makes and the attitude he exudes.
The summary of this episode says something like before "he becomes a power hungry warmonger." Like that's a bad thing? ;) Power hungry warmongering seems to work for him. It works for me. :p
Yes, Absolute Power is my porn. :)

i have to agree too. for some reason evil daniel really does it for me. in avatar when he's the gou'ald, and he looks over at sam and teal'c, i just melt . i don't know why. i mean, part of my attraction to daniel is his wonderful humanity, and gentleness and vulnerability, so why i go 'hot damn' every time he's evil?

answering my own quesiton..maybe because it is such a a switch. evil daniel is so cold and uncaring....it throws gentle vulnerable daniel into sharp relief.
or maybe bad guys are just sexy..

No, he isn't. Something hot is what he is. :)
I notice it when he calls Teal'c in to translate something he's writing on the chalkboard. I don't think Regular Daniel would have interrupted his Kelnoreem.
Then Daniel just dismisses him as quick as he can.
The briefing room is more Evil Daniel. He's leading the presentation and barking orders at everyone, including his "personal requests" that need "immediate approval." :p
What I think is one of the hottest moments, besides waking up in those blue pajamas (drools), is when he's walking down the stairs with that woman and he inquires about the schedule. She tells him things aren't going as according to plan and he says "unbelieveable." :)
Other good moments: "Elevators are such a pain in the ass" and "it's two thousand dollars a bottle." How good does he look in that chair in that outfit? The hands in his pockets is so sexy for some reason.
Okay, I'm going to go before I need to be hosed down. :p

"it's two thousand dollars a bottle."
That bit was very much the anti-Daniel. 'Our' Daniel would have said that with surprise or mild bemusement or perhaps embarrassment.

I never noticed that about the translation thing before - nicely picked up there!
I thought he looked hottest when Jack came to see him at the house. He is standing with his back to the camera and his hands in his pockets. The camera is focussing on Jack in the distance but what we actually get is a very nice close up of Daniel's butt :D .

ah yes, the infamous 'butt shot', another cause of the MSSTL (Michael Shanks Stunned Thunk Look). poor MS, acting so well and being so clever, and showing us a deeply hidden side of daniel's character in that scene...and there we all are going 'oh my god, look at that butt'.
But i did appreciate the character work eventually. after i'd seen the scene a couple of dozen times.

my, we seem to be very far down the list. anyway, here's a question for all the dan/jan shippers (actually, this could apply to the non-shippers too, given daniel's way of caring for everyone)...
Spoilers Heroes 2 if daniel knew that there had been an alternate timeline where janet survived (even though the aschen had taken over the world) and they had changed the timeline, what do you think he would do? would he blame someone? would he try to get sam to change the timeline again so they could get rid of the aschen and save janet? or try to persuade oma to save janet, because, strictly speaking, if things had happened as they were meant to, janet would never have died? and as daniel helped change the timeline, that makes him partly reponsible for the new time line where janet dies. it sounds like the kind of problem that could really mess with danny's head...
i mean, even if you don't ship for those two, they did seem to be friends, and he was devastated by her death

This whole post is spoilery for Heroes 2. No spoiler tags in it so skip to the next one if you're still pre-Heroes 2.

if daniel knew that there had been an alternate timeline where janet survived (even though the aschen had taken over the world) and they had changed the timeline, what do you think he would do? would he blame someone? would he try to get sam to change the timeline again so they could get rid of the aschen and save janet? or try to persuade oma to save janet, because, strictly speaking, if things had happened as they were meant to, janet would never have died? and as daniel helped change the timeline, that makes him partly reponsible for the new time line where janet dies. it sounds like the kind of problem that could really mess with danny's head...
I think he could be philosophical about it. I think he'd conclude that SG-1 were Right to change the timeline in 2010, and that - given that the result was exactly what future/alternate SG-1 & Janet had hoped for - the death of Janet and the altering past events were not materially connected.
He wouldn't let Jack go and look for a sarc or phone Thor when he was dying, and he never asked Oma to help him recover. When he was ascended he restricted himself to tiny nudges when his help was required to help Jack and Teal'c. I think Daniel tends to apply his ethics and morality to situations involving himself in the same way as to situations involving others. Dying of radiation poisoning or getting shot is tragic, but it's all par for the course in the realms of human experience.
I think he'd only ask Oma to save Janet (or anyone else) if the circumstances were 'unnatural' such as another Higher Being smiting her for no reason, or for someone other than the SGC mucking about with time and Janet dying as a *direct* result of that.
(This bit is just my take on things: but I suspect that Daniel's immersion in the study of ancient cultures would give him a more accepting view of Death. "That has passed; this will too" is a favourite quote of mine from an ancient poem. Seeing humanity in the context of endless aeons, lost empires, and millions of little people going about their little daily lives and then dying can really drive it home that death comes to all.)
I don't think he'd feel guilt over Janet if he knew what their future selves had done, especially as the whole reason for changing the timeline was to ensure the continued production of babies, and that baby who was called Janet at the end of Heroes would emphasise how right it was to prevent the Aschen arriving and how Janet would have been pleased in that regard.

"Are you going to help him . . . or . . .?"
"No, wait, let me tell it. It's good."
I've got it just about memorized. Sad, isn't it? :p I also love the way Daniel looks just after Jack says ". . .this guy's gone to a whole other plane of existence." He's so expressive with his eyes and hands.

I just had this sudden urge to list some of my favorite Daniel moments. It seems I've fallen into reflective mode and I can't get up. :p (Won't include s7-8, because of spoiler space, and heaven knows it'll be a looooong list even without those two seasons) So, here I go (*takes deep breath*):
The way he says "a big, big party" when he's at Jack's place talking about Abydos. "They treated me like their savior. It was, um, embarrassing." The party line, because the way he says it is just utterly adorable and the savior line because that modesty is just soo Daniel. ~ Children of the Gods
The "How much would I remember if you chose me?" and the "Something of the host must survive." lines, because it shows just how desperate he is and how he would do just about anything to find out if he can ever get Sha're back. ~ Children of the Gods
Smashing the hammer to save Teal'c. ~ Thor's Hammer
His joy and fascination at finding the meaning of life stuff in Torment of Tantalus. And his reluctance to leaving it behind, even if it means being stranded on that planet, all alone.
All of Fire and Water! :D
His refusal to give up searching for Jack and Sam in Solitudes.
"This isn't happening. This is nuts. This isn't happening. This isn't happening." Somehow, this always makes me smile. ~ There But For the Grace of God
Standing up to Kinsey in Politics.
"God, there is nothing to forgive." ~ Secrets
Letting Hammond know that he won't leave Jack alone, without means to communicate. ~ The Fifth Race
"See see see see see!!!" ~ One False Step
The 'White Room' scenes. ~ Legacy
Contemplating what a wonder a pen was to Sha're. ~ Forever in a Day
"You did the right thing, Teal'c." Allowing himself to forgive Teal'c, end of Forever in a Day.
Snatching the communication device in The Devil You Know, even though he knew it was gonna cost him a few bruises.
Going to see Jack and talk about his reasons for leaving the SGC. ~ Shades of Grey
End scene of Shades of Grey, "We drew straws. I lost."
That soft "Bye" just before the 'Oma lightning' strikes down the Jaffa warriors. ~ Maternal Instinct
All of Crystal Skull! :D
Daniel's look of desperation at being told to blow up the sub, with Jack and Teal'c still on it. ~ Small Victories
"The... the * points upward and makes cute hand gestures* the... the... th-- they're okay!" after he realizes that Thor beamed them onboard his ship. ~ Small Victories
Questioning Jack's negotiating tactics in The Other Side.
Oh, I give up, every Daniel scene in Window of Opportunity, too! :D
But particularly that disbelief in his voice when he says "Maybe he read your report?!", including the cute facial expressions.
His sarcastic comments and subsequent admission to having hung around O'Neill too much. ~ Watergate
Oh, for cryin' out loud! Everything, and I do mean everything in The First Ones:
The bandana, those gorgeous blue eyes that just completely overwhelms you, his many humorous comments, his interaction with Chaka, his willingness to communicate and learn, even though he's been dragged for a real long time and is tied up! For doing the smart thing and making a run for it, plus doing the the smart thing in not trying again since the first attempt was less than successful. More jokes - about symbiote heads and play on words - "Now, don't say 'Ka' until you've tried it."
I think this might be "The Daniel Jackson episode for me. I'm not entirely sure, but it's a definite possibility. I love it so very much.
"Okay, I'm not on the ship.", in responce to Jack's question if he might just happen to be on the ship. ~ Scorched Earth
"Oooh, that's good, did you do that? That's a duck, isn't it?" - playing the ignorant card in Point of No Return.
Impersonating the Great and Powerful Oz! :D ~ Tangent
His interactions with Sam and the unstable mine in Serpent's Venom.
Balcony scene, The Light. I realize that's not technically Daniel, but I still love that scene. MS is so good.
"You don't understand, this one's name is Chaka, and he is coming with me.". Determined Daniel. Love it. ~ Beast of Burden
Daniel, sitting completely enraptured in front of the Ziggurat doorway, trying to figure out the way in, while the others are bored to tears. Daniel: "Just about there." Jack: "You said that an hour ago." ~ The Tomb
The 'thumbs up' gesture after seeing Joe step into the Gate Room wearing a suit. ~ 2001
"Oh swell, it's kind of like Goa'uld Mardi Gras." Makes me laugh every time. ~ Summit
Crying over Reese's death. ~ Menace
Throwing himself through the window in Meridian. I know I've mentioned this on other threads already, but it's just such a defining 'Daniel moment', for me.
Entire conversation with Jack in Abyss.
"I haven't left your side, Teal'c. And I'm not going to. That's a promise." ~ The Changeling
The classic elevator banter. ~ Full Circle
"Is that my stuff?" ~ Full Circle
The moment where he does (or maybe not, but I've decided that he does :p )
push back his glasses, even though he's not wearing them. ~ Full Circle
Challenging Anubis. ~ Full Circle
And now I can't feel my fingers, they're all numb and stuff. I think it's fair to say I willl never (probably ;)) write this long a post ever again.
Only for Daniel.

I love it when daniel and jack do the 'did' 'didn't' type of arguments. the first time they did that after daniel descended i just cheered my little heart out. and when jack and daniel, in One False Step are saying 'well, obviously there's something wrong with us' and 'fixing' their friendship...that's so cute. and ...the one with the mine (Serpent's Venom?)..when jack helps daniel pick up his things then pushes his glasses back up his nose..that's so funny.

what i enjoy is the fact at times the two say stuff together:
between two fires when they both say '38'
one false step when they are in the infirmary and say 'something wrong with us'
enemies when they say together after hearing both carters plan to blow up the sun 'thats ambitious'
love how they are always on the same wave length and say the stuff together :)

Some of my favorite Daniel quotes:
"Nothing. Why, did you have something in mind?" Summit. LOL!
"She's a temple priestess. They don't do a lot of dating." -Crossroads
"No, I love you." - Secrets *swoons* Love that ep!
"You won't be alone." -Full Circle
"I'll be back. Soon." -Need (I know it's Sarcophagus-Addicted Daniel, but I still think it's sexy the way he says it) :p
"Not my favorite SG team?" - 2010
"Sha're, don't be shy." - COTG
All I can think of right now. :)

surprisingly I didn't like the First Ones the first time i saw it. I thought it was too predictable in much of the story line, and I was horrified at what they did to Rothman. But repeated viewings have changed my mind. And as said, how can you dislike an episode with the line 'Don't say Ka until you've tried it'?

yes hated to see rothman killed i really liked him! and you gotta love that line but i am such a sucker for watching daniel eat the energy bar not sure why but i think its sexy!
i am strange i know lol but that is just me i can watch that man eat the bar! i enjoyed how daniel kept notes on the recorder also all during what was going on with him i found that so intresting! and how he learned to communicate with chaka and get him to trust him!
was glad they kept the chaka/daniel arc going!

very nice closeups on those loverly baby blues, thank god he was wearing the bandana cause really got some nice closeups :)
and thought how smart he was to put all that on the recorder anything and everything he was going thru even to the point of figuring out the language!

Sadly I didn't really enjoy Enemy Mine. There was definitely something lacking, and I think it might have been Dion Johnstone. Somehow, it wasn't really Chaka for me - and that was before I knew Dion wasn't playing him.

Yesterday was Stargate Monday and they had some pretty good eps on.
Beast of Burden - What was up with Daniel's hair in that? It looked like it was parted wrong or something. Then at the end of the ep, he had his glasses off and the rain made his hair a little wet and I forgot what I was complaining about. :p
The Tomb - Bandana Daniel. Need I say more?
Between Two Fires - Okay, the writers need to warn us when they show Daniel in a suit and a full length coat right off the bat. Too. Much. Hotness. C'mon, people, a little warning so we can find a drool bucket. :)

beast of burden- always one of my favorites since we get wet hair and no glasses and action jackson and chaka also in eps. and a little whumping :) so very tastey eps.!
the tomb- oh yea BANDANA DANNY and also 'yes you go down the dark hallway alone and i will stay in the dark room alone' ah what a line and leave it to michael to come up with it :)
between two fires- i always call him MR GQ the man can wear anything :) but fantastic bum shots also and lots of DANIEL AND JACK interaction in that eps. :)

mmmm the man looks hot in the long coat and the suit but even the jacket on his BDU's seems to be short since you get some really great bum shots when jack and him go to talk to the tokra about the weapon she is willing to give them :)
mmmm tastey eps. :)

My favorite line thin that ep is the briefing room with Jack and Daniel saying "38" at the same time, then when they go back to the Tollen planted and are talking to what's her name when she ask how many cannons earth would need and it's a combination of Daneil and Jack to she the 38 out...I think it's Daniel saying something like "oh about 30...." then Jack tags on the "8"....

yep that is what i mean about them saying things n'sync and also finishing the others sentence to cute :)
and love daniels looks when daniel makes the remark about not alot of people at omoc's funeral and jack looks at him and says 'you were invited' and daniel kinda raises his eyebrows and rolls eyes lol :)

I was watching Beneath the Surface again last night. Daniel's just so hot in it, I can't stand it. In particular, that scene when the three of them are meeting after lights out and the fire light hits just right on Daniel's face. :)
I also love the way he says "facade" for some reason.
Anyone figure out what that thing is on Daniel's wrist? Is it just a piece of fabric? It doesn't quite look like a bracelet. I'd just love to see him wearing one of those black leather wrist cuffs (nothing kinky) it's kind of like goth jewelry along with some tight faded jeans and a sleeveless t-shirt. Is that too much to ask? :p

do you remember at the beginning, whenever we saw Daniel in civvies, it was always plaid shirt, and mismatched jacket and trousers? I remember seeing Sam's promotion in Fair Game and he wasn't wearing a tie, and I remember remarking somewhere online 'Does Daniel even own a tie?'. Well, he's smartened up a lot since then. Started with him actually wearing a tie in D and C, and progressing onto yummy yummy suits (Only good thing about covenant..daniel in that suit... )...and no more plaid shirts while off duty..it seems his dress sense has improved enormously. It seemed at the beginning Daniel didn't care what he wore, just dashed into the store, grabbed whatever was on sale, and rushed out again. It seems now he actually spends a lot mroe time and attention on his clothes....i think someone taught him to shop (i have my own ideas who, but never mind)

Yep, they're certainly dressing Daniel better now. He wore some nasty looking shirts in season 1 and 2. Of course if I could dress him it'd be sleeveless shirts all the way. ;) Not that I don't enjoy the suits. I do. Very much. :)
I'm sure you ladies have noticed that he's gotten a little heavier in the later seasons. I'm sure it's just because he's gotten older. MS was 27 and 28 in season one and two, respectively. Something happens when you turn 30, IMO. He's got a bit of a stomach on him now, which maybe why they put the V-neck sweaters on him (i.e. Full Circle, Changeling).
Don't get me wrong, he looks fine. I'd hazard a guess that he's over 200 pounds now from probably about 170 or 180 in the earlier eps, but he's at least 6 feet tall, so that's about right.
Aren't I critical tonight? :p

i will always say he has a hockey players body and he has had that stomach just hidden under bigger clothes :)
but your not critical i just think at times tighter shirts and such just show it but like i said look at hockey player and their body is built the same way since michael played hockey for so long maybe he keeps the same workout :)

So I was watching Absolute Power again last night. I know, sad isn't it? Actually, I just go to scene selections and play from "Crazy with Power" until the end. :p
I noticed a couple more things. When he gets up and looks out the window and sees Sam pulling up in his driveway, then they pan down to the security detail and it looks like he's got a black Hummer in the driveway, doesn't it? Am I crazy? Wait, don't answer that. There looks to be a couple sporty European cars in the drive as well.
The house is very formal and Regular Daniel wouldn't have all that. Too ostentacious. When he's looking at Sam and Jack talking in her cell, his shirt looks white, but when he comes to greet Jack it looks like it's a very muted grey. I know I should be checking out his butt in that scene and not the color of his clothing. I apologize. Forgive me my fellow Daniel Worshippers. :)

Right, how could I forget about the Peacekeeper Wars? I'm working into a mini-obsession with Farscape and Ben. :p We've got a thread about Ben and Michael on another board and how much they look alike. :)
It turns out I had seen the eps on Stargate Monday last night, but I still watched 'em. Not much Daniel in them. We did get some Casual Daniel, though. :)
I love Proving Ground and Satterfield. "She thinks he's cute." Then Sam gets upset with her. I would have said: "Thinks he's cute? He *is* cute. Too cute to be a Goa'uld." Perhaps Daniel took Satterfield on a tour of his office later.
I also liked "Turn that thing off." "Sorry." Did it freak anyone else out when Daniel was talking like a Goa'uld?

In last night's Atlantis (Rising 1) he made a couple of very much 'token' requests to go to Atlantis, and he obviously knew what the answer would be. He clearly wasn't desperate to go, like he was in the Movie and CotG. I wonder if it was him feeling "this is the sort of thing I ought to want to do" and just fitting himself into what his own and Jack's preconceptions of him are, or if he just wanted to get a rise out of Jack? ;)
My favourite Daniel bit in New Order 2 last night was how he was all disoriented and you could see his mind going tick tick tick after he was beamed up, and he was obviously trying to juggle the situation 'downstairs' with what Thor was telling him, until he sussed that Thor's problem was more pressing, and then he was totally focussed. But he was very Early Daniel while he was still working it out, and I liked it.

well can i just say in 'rising' really like the outfit they had him in the antartic THUNK the black tight pants and love the coat but like how daniel figured out the symbols and love when jack comes in and says 'this is the part where you talk really fast' lol :)
and 'new order part two' is great with jack being beamed into the ship called the 'daniel jackson' how great was that and then daniel looked hot with the P90 on the planet and carrying the P90 and the suit at the end!
ok i am just shallow but i love the banter that jack n daniel did with the 'did and didn't'!

Sue hope you don't mind but I inserted spoiler tags in your post, as well as what the spoiler was for. If you want to see the spoiler tags click on Edit on your post. The reason we do this is because some people have the page set to scroll up and some to scroll down - that is they have newest posts at the bottom and work their way up, or newest posts at the top and work their way down. And there's no point in putting in spoiler space if you don't tell people what it is for!
For everyone's reference, when putting in spoilers, first put a note of what it is for (ep name and season number), then enter:
[ spoiler]
but without the space between the [ and spoiler - that's just there so you can see the tag in this message.
When you've finished, enter
[ /spoiler]
again without the space.
For a full list of the tags that you can use, make sure you're in advanced view when you are writing a reply, then scroll down. On the left-hand side of the page you'll see a note saying that Vb is turned on. The vb is a link - click on that link and a crib sheet of tags will open in a seperate window (you won't lose your reply).

There was just an innocence about Sha're that was destroyed when Apophis took her as host of his queen. In Secrets, she was afraid Daniel wouldn't forgive her, even though he told her there was nothing to forgive. I still think she felt unworthy of his love after getting pregnant with Apophis' child, despite his reassurances. She also had many opportunities to tell him she loved him, but she never did. Then the "forgive me" before she gave birth. :(
There also isn't much Daniel/Sha're fanfic. I searched many sites and have found some good stories here on Gateworld, but not many that are "Daniel/Sha're romance." That's why I had to start writing my own. :) Their story needs to be told, of course, it's mostly AU, but that's okay. :p Her character was under utilized IMO, but there's also a lot that can be done with prequels and post-The Movie stories.

Poor Daniel. I mean people call sam a black widow, but look what happens to the women daniel loves? sha're is taken as a host, then dies. sarah is taken as a host, and while now free, i'm still convinced she's evil. kira was a mass murderer. shyla was the daughter of a a dying sarcophagus addict (plus she was stupid..she really got on my nerves) and if you do happen to ship janet and daniel..look how that ended!!! Remember my earlier mini-rant about Daniel not having Sha're's picture in his office? If you didn't that's okay. I was watching the re-run of Upgrades and it looked like it was in the corner during the scene when Jack reads the book real fast and Daniel is jealous. Now, I don't know why it's in the corner. It should be by his computer or somewhere in a more visible location. I'll have to check my DVD later. *crosses fingers*

I also love Daniel's /MS singing in episodes...he's got a very nice voice...
As for the discussion on Shar'e (or however you spell it...) I'm in the minority, because episodes with Shar'e are my least favorite...I've just never liked that story arc and was very glad it was finially over in FIAD...I know, I know I've a horrible person, but I just never liked her and Daniel together. Re: Sha're. I've never been fond of the TV version, everytime I saw her I wondered where she got the blow-dryer and hair spray. Aside from that she didn't have the innocence Shau'ri in the movie had, and I just couldn't see Sha're leading the little band of kids and defending her people. Sha're also seemed to have aged ten years, while Daniel shed about the same!
I wish the movie actress could have been in the TV series.

I didn't know about Sha're's pic in Urgo. Thanks! I like to see it in eps where it's not a plot device, like Meridian and Fallen. I know y'all must be thinking there's not cameras on Abydos. I was thinking that as well, but someone told me there was a camera taken my the team in the movie. I don't remember Movie Daniel having one, but it's been awhile since I've seen it. :p
It's Sha're. In the movie it's Shau'ri. Don't ask. I don't know.
I guess many people don't like the Daniel/Sha're arc, but indulge me for a sec. ;)
I love how they fell in love after they were married. I liked how Daniel didn't know they were married as well as he didn't take advantage of her that first time in the tent. They found a way to talk with each other even though they didn't speak the same language. The way she says his name, as if saying Danielle. I think of them as the princess and the scholar. It's nice to see intectual types get the beautiful woman.
Okay, shutting up now. :D

What do you like about the character?
Are we sure his Dr. is in Archeology and not Philosophy?
What did you think the first time you saw Daniel?
WOW...Someone actually made a philosophical character that will stick to their ethics!
The first episode I seen was beast of burden. (Since the movie, but I didn't have a really strong opinion about him in the movie.) I was really suprised that they would have a character like that in a show that was successful. The more I watched it the more I fell in love with him intellectually...the cute-ness sorta creeped in there.
What do you think Daniel did when he was ascended?
I have a whole fan fic on this, but basically watched over SG-1, explored the universe to find out about things, and annoying Oma.
Boonie or bandana?
None of the Above? I like him without either of them, but if I had to choose the boonie isn't that bad.
Do you have a favourite Daniel episode?
Beast of Burdan, Pretence, Shades of Gray, Lockdown, Icon, Hathor, There but for the Grace of God, Need, Holiday (I'm a shakesphere fan), I don't think I could leave out Summit and Last Stand.

I believe it's archaeology, anthropology and linguistics. Anyone know for sure?
The first ep I saw was Dead Man's Switch (Short hair Daniel). Of course I thought he was hot, however, I didn't know much about the show. A friend of mine loved it and I figured what the hell, I'll check it out. :p
Ascended Daniel? Yet again, I didn't understand the whole ascension thing until Meridian. I've only seen it twice. It's too hard to watch. *sobs*
Boonie or Bandana? Bandana definitely. Daniel + bandana = smokin' hot!
Favorite Daniel ep? Absolute Power. Need I say more? There's obviously more. Too many to list, but I also love Need and The First Ones. Of course being a Daniel/Sha're shipper I would be remiss if I didn't mention COTG, Secrets, and Forever In A Day. :)

what do i like about the character? way to many things to post lol :) but love when he talks about anything about archeology or mythology!
what did i think when i the first time i saw the character?
had to find out more about the character and actor who played him! my first eps. was SERPENTS LAIR and enjoyed the end when jack gives the SPACEMONKEY HUG and how he didn't want to leave daniel behind and i just wanted to know if daniel survived and he did was great had me hooked!
what do i think daniel did while he was ascended?
helped his friends, helped jack out in abyss, helped tealc out in changeling and then helped bratec out in that other eps. or that is what i heard from people who saw the eps. that he helped just seem to have found a way around the rulez!
boonie or bandana?
bandana gal here all da way!
and my fav eps?
how long can the list be from season one thru eight!
the first ones, the curse, icon, lockdown, new order, avatar, endgame, beast of burden, changeling, full circle, secrets, fire and water, legacy, crystal skull, abyss, enemy mine, lifeboat, evo part one and two you get the idea right cause my list will be any eps. from all seasons that is stand alone daniel!

Hi back :)
Thanks for sharing. I think he'd make a poor academic philosopher. He'd have more patience with philosophy than Jack, but I can see him getting fed up at the airy-fairyness of it before long. I think Daniel's the type who likes to study tangibles. But I agree that he can be quite philosophical at times.
(I've just deleted about seven different Second Paragraphs cos they're all about how philosophical Teal'c is. I probably ought to have c&p'd them into the Teal'c thread; maybe I'll go and dig it up...)

I was watching Out of Mind yesterday and was wondering if that was the first ep when Daniel's hair was short? His hair looked really bad, but since he'd been in stasis, I'll let it slide. :p Of course with those shirtless scenes, I wasn't always looking at his hair. My first post on these forums, so I thought it fitting that it'd be on a Daniel appreciation thread. :D
So, what do I like about him? I have to say, it's the whole Ancient cultures and languages-knowledge thing. I'm such a nerd, but that's definitely a big reason. Not to mention that he's witty to boot, caring, built and oh so cute.
I'm still not familiar with all the episode names, because I'm new to the fandom, so can't really say what my favourite episode is...

Welcome.
To answer your question, there have been several threads in the past under General Discussion that addresses ship in general. The Sam/Jack ship has a huge following, and hence their very active thread on that. If you do a search for 'ship' in the title under Gen Dis, you should be able to find them. They haven't been touched in a while and threads that don't get touched on a daily basis in Gen Dis can drop several pages quickly.
If you need help, I can go and find them and posts the links for you.
We also have some great Thunk threads for the admiration of individual cast members/characters. You should check them out too. (especially the Daniel one if you like him. ;) )

Nope, sorry.
The closest we have right now is this (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=507/) which discusses their friendship, but from a pretty specific and definitely platonic starting point. It's an oldish thread, but feel free to post in it if you've something to add. For reasons of PG-ness we don't have much slash discussion on GW, although if you wanted to start a general Jack & Daniel discussion thread do go ahead.

So, in honor of the Legacy being on today, we will have the opportunity to appreciate "Crazy" Daniel. When he's at the mental hospital, I always want to reach out and comfort him. He looks like he needs a hug. ;)
we get to appreciate DANIEL in white showing arm'age in the cell he is in at the mental hospital :) lots and lots of arm'age and when he is lying on the bed when jack is visiting him after he was attacked by his locker! loverly arm shots when he keeps pressing his eyes trying to make sense out of his theories which were makeing no sense!
LOVE LEGACY unfortunately to me they quickly make daniel well so that we can see how jack, sam and janet handle the same thing happening to them! they should have stayed focused on recovery of daniel!
but oh well lost opprotunity!

I thought the writers rushed him getting well, too. I thought the last bit with Jack, Sam and Janet went on too long. I often wonder why Jack (who is neither a Scientist or a Doctor) was in the lab with them. He should have been up in the observation room with Daniel.
I think that they went to fast from Daniel at the Mental Hospital to Daniel back at the SGC. Maybe some sort of scene with Jack and Daniel trying to convince Dr. McKenzie that he is well enough to leave.

Ancient Culture episode? Well, that's a tough one. When I first read that I thought you meant Ancients episode, as in Ascended, which would most definitely be Changling.
But when it comes to the ancient cultures they've encountered...I guess for me that would have to be the movie rather than an episode. Getting through the gate and finding the Abydonians speaking ancient Egyptian, and realising what it was all about...that's pretty classic Daniel for me.

"You're all being very bad. Stop it at once or I'll set the penguins onto you."
Are the penguins tired of hanging out at the shipper thread?? :p
By including the movie, I would have to agree with you. It does define Daniel as Ancient Egypt is his first passion.
If I stick with just the show, I would have to say,Thor's Chariot. The scene where he is working on the puzzle. I just really enjoyed watching him think about his knowledge and trying to apply it to the test.

LOL sorry forgot to change the subject line when I posted a reply. I've no idea what the penguin thing actually means! I like the little critters myself.
Hmmm Thor's Chariot. Yes that is a good one. I did like that we got to see the first glimpse there that human hosts could be freed and that the host did survive the blending. I wonder about the agony that Daniel went through all those years - I know that if I'd been in his position, I'd have gone mad thinking about all the things that my partner was forced to watch their 'body' do, things that they couldn't control, trapped and helpless...

Daniel is very well-done. I missed him in season six. (but at the same time I was watching season 7 on SciFi so it helped) He's smartand is sort of the moral center of SG-1. Jack and he might butt heads a lot, but those two always find a way to resolve their differences. Daniel carries on some rather loong conversations sometimes (which requires Jack's intervention), but they usually have some sort of point at the end, so it's Ok.

I don't know! I watched them all on video from the states, and I've missed the last two weeks. Maybe the reason this thread has been so quiet is that it was the one from Jack's perspective running the base. That was a really good ep, but a tad Daniel-lite!

I love Beast of Burden. I love how Daniel goes in as an angel of mercy and with nothing but benevolent intentions gets everything wrong. He lies, then he's forced to surrender all claim to the moral high ground when the little boy comes to castigate him, then he has to face the possibility that he might be the cause of people's deaths. I think it's to Stargate's credit that SG-1 *don't* always succeed in their endeavours.
At the time I didn't like how despondant (-ent?) he seemed. It just didn't feel right for a character who had always been so enthusiastic and positive. I was worried that he'd end up jaded, cos that would have been ever so depressing. With hindsight though it was probably a good thing, cos it meant that Meridian made more sense than if it had come in late s4.
What changed BoB from a depressing ep to a great one was the ending, where Daniel finds a typically simple alternative for the rebel Unas; and we see that his courage, constancy and essential decency have made enough of an impressin on Chaka and the others for it to be taken seriously as a course of action, even though it would appear a less effective battle tactic.

OK guys we've got the thunk thread for a lot of this (there are beanbags in there, chocolate archealogists, and the cloning machine!)
Getting back to the topic of discussion, I agree that in looking back over season five I did feel there was a natural progression that made Meridian seem to make perfect sense - it was the salvation that Daniel needed.
If he hadn't ascended, do you think he would have gone completely darkside? Or that we'd have seen a diminishing of the Daniel we knew till there was nothing left - no moral voice at all?
Madeleine
October 29th, 2004, 03:02 AM
If that direction had continued, I think the moral voice would still have been there, but with a pessimism and sense of defeat that would have been galling to see in him. I can't see him going darkside as in evil, but I can see him becoming so cynical that he'd turn in on himself and divorce his feelings and passion from the rest of the universe.
GateGipsy
October 29th, 2004, 03:17 AM
oh that's such a sad picture. I imagine him becoming bitter, and alone, that way :(
He seems so much lighter of soul in Season 7, but with an aura of sadness. Which is understandable. I wonder how he felt about S8 spoiler Anubis taking control of him in the S8 ep, the name of which I forget! Given what happened with Abydos.
LMichelle
October 29th, 2004, 08:34 AM

After reading what you wrote, I got to thinking about the episode Orpheus. At the end of the episode, Daniel is talking to Teal'c. He says he finally has this feeling of belonging. I think that something happened while he was ascended, other than not being able to help, that made him feel that wasn't the right place for him and he no longer cared if he broke the rules.
I think if he didn't go through that experience, he might not have felt he belonged. I think after all the other experiences he's endured, he would have still been the moral voice, but would have been just a shell of what he was before.
Daniel's_twin
October 29th, 2004, 10:19 AM
That would have been awful. One of the reasons he's tied with Jack for my favorite character is because of his moral center. To see him as a mere shell, I don't know if I would have been able to take it.
(spoilers in next few spaces)
Edited to say: Spoilers for S7, Lost City
I think he's also really regretting what happened to Abydos. Ultimately, it paid off. But at the cost of countless lives of the residents of Abydos. It was so sad seeing them go. I think the reason they gave him that part in "lockdown" where he was the only one who knew that it was Anubis and not something else was because there was something rather personal between him and Anubis. Probably because of that encounter on his mothership, maybe because he took Osiris/Sara in his service. Either way, Daniel seems to like to make personal enemies out of the Goa'uld. Look at his track record. Ra: Ra really hated him because he thought Daniel was posing as him. Apophis: Ok, he's more personal to Teal'c, byt Daniel's also very personal with him because of Sha're. Yu: Ok, not a real personal enemy, but Yu was ready to kill him with his bare hands at the end of "Last Stand". Anubis: Daniel should definitely be the one to have the final crack at this guy to make up for the Abydos mistake.

The episode you can't remember was "Lockdown," and without giving anything away, I have to say that a lot of potentional was lost by not following up on just how Daniel WOULD feel about THAT! Rather the same as the lost potentional in "Zero Hour" regarding Jack and Ba'al and what happened in Abyss.
Hopefully the 'lack' will show up resolved by fanfiction!!

Okay. Sigh. So I kind of watched S6 with half an eyeball. I did see Mckay in Redemption; I like him better on SG than SGA-- I'm finding that I dislike him there.
-- eagerly waiting your opinion of Icon!!!

Did anyone watch Forever In A Day last night? Poor Daniel. Poor Sha're. :(
I believe he still blames himself for what happened to her. He mentioned in the ep something like all this technology we have and we couldn't help her. Also in Meridian when he was looking at her picture, he said: "I had the chance to life my life with her, but couldn't leave it alone. What happened to her was my fault." So much Daniel Angst. :(
I love angst. But I usually resolve it in my stories.

I watched it. And yeah, I feel sorry for Sha're and Daniel. He has had so much happen to him, it's little wonder why he was reluctant to ascend in Meridian.

FIAD always makes me cry, so I don't watch it very often. It's so SAD- -for everyone involved. Poor Daniel, I feel so bad for him, he really deserves a break. It's been, what, five years now? He should have someone to love him.

Well, I guess we'll just have to see if his relationship with Sarah develops at all.

I'd like to see Daniel and Sarah together. I think he's grown up enough to realize a good thing when he has it now, but how emotionally scarred he must be. He's endured a lot of loss. Would he be willing to put his emotions on the line again, or would the fear of the anguish of another loss make him hold back?
LMichelle

Nope, there's no way Daniel and Sarah can get together again. Too much has happened, anyway. Besides Daniel would have a hard time seeing her as anyone but Osiris. How could he get past that?
Personally, I like Osiris much more than Sarah. She's a bad ass. Let's get Evil Daniel together with Osiris. There's a lethal combination. ;)

Osiris is a male ;-)
I'm not sure why, but I've never really been fond of Daniel/Sarah as a combo.

I'm not in favour of Daniel/Sarah either. I can see them as really good friends, especially after what she went though, she'll need someone to talk to. But as more than that? If the spark had really been there, then they'd have survived whatever it was that pushed them apart in the first place.
Whereas his feelings for Sha're were strong enough right from the start that, without even barely knowing her, he was willing to give up his whole life and his home planet to be with her. At the time, it was a one way trip - as far as he knew, he'd never be able to go back.

His academic life he had flushed down the toilet as far as everyone in his field was concerned, and on is home planet he had (as far as we know) no strong ties to anyone.
His parents were dead, his standing was gone, but there on Abydos was a living embodiment of what he had studied all his life. I always felt like he accepted Sha're immediately because he was decent and kindhearted and didn't want to see her hurt. With the emotional losses he had suffered it seem natural to me that he would eventually be open to her love, but I didn't think he stayed behind just for Sha're.

I don't think he'd have stayed behind for those reasons alone, if it hadn't been for Sha're.
For me, I moved 12,000 miles from my home to be with my hubs, and trust me, no matter how good my life here might be, it is really incredibly hard being away from your home. Especially that far away, as it means visits are every few years.
To give up everything that is familiar, and not to mention the comforts, forever, as Daniel decided to do, takes a lot more than just the motivation that is provided by seeing his life's work come to life.

12,000 miles?! Wow. My husband just shouted that he loves me but he wouldn't even move down the block for me. That's love.
I don't think that Daniel would have stayed behind if it hadn't been for Sha're. I'm sure that he loved the chance to study the Abydonians further but, like Gipsy, I don't think that he would have cut himself off from Earth for that alone.

He may not have been in love yet with Sha're, but seen the potential for it. In plenty of cultures marriages are not born of love so much as love is born of marriage. That might have had an appeal for Daniel.
LMichelle
November 4th, 2004, 12:25 PM
He didn't fall in love with Sha're until after they were married. I believe she was a big reason why he stayed, but also he didn't have much of a life on earth. He was ridiculed by his collegues, no close family relationships, or a person to stay on Earth for. I think he also didn't have anywhere to live. He had suitcases with him when he got in the car with Catherine, right? I believed she mentioned something like that.

She did. She said that his contracts had expired, he had just been evicted from his apartment (probably because he couldn't pay rent anymore, or they didn't like whatever artifacts he owned lying around the place) and that everything he owned was in those two suitcases. If I were him, I'd wanna live on Abydos too. Just one big downside. No indoor plumbing or real bathroom.

My pov on that is: Daniel was attracted to Sha're, he was an egyptologist/linguist who was suddenly *living* the life he'd been, er, digging up for so many years, he had nothing to go backto earth for, and he was attracted to Sha're. <G>
It's possible to 'fall in love at first site,' and if you're lucky the love continues on and grows to include friendship also. I would guess that Daniel simply fell in love with it all: Sha're, Abydos, the Egyptions, etc, and as the days passed realised he not only loved Sha're, he liked her, too.

OK, here is my thoughts on this, looking at everything, like someone else said Daniel really didnt' have anything here (earth) to say for...let's see, he was thought of as a hack/wacko in the archeology (sp?) world...he'd lost all of his grants so he had no money, he'd been evicted from his home and everything he owned was in the couple of suitcases that he had with him with Catherine picked him up. Besides all of that, taking what we've learned about Daniel in SG1 he's parents are dead, his only living family (at least that we know of) was his Grandfather Nick, and we know that, that wasn't a good or close relationship, he wouldn't take him when his parents died, and what little relationship they had was VERY strained when Daniel's theories on "aliens" came out (not to mention Nick was in the funny farm himself). From the comments made in The Curse it was at least clear to me that the few friends Daniel had through his schoolng and teaching days, where also lost when he put forth his theories, either because they thought he was nuts or because he distanced himself to save their reputations. We know from things that Daniel has said in other episodes that he never felt like he belonged (pre Meridian/homecoming).....Now think about it, here's a guy that has what can only be described as a really sucky life on earth, for the reason's listed above, and now he's presented a chance to completely start over, living in a culture that he'd spent his life studing, and with people that didn't see him as a failure (as people on earth did) but as a saviour, plus there's this women he get's....why wouldn't he stay, he had NO REASON to want to return to earth...as for Daniel and Sha're I don't think the love thing started until after Jack and the rest of the team left, but it blossomed in that year they spent together (as much as I hate it...like I've said before, I've never like the character...) but that's my thought, I don't think Sha're was as much a factor as everything else he didn't want to face back on earth....he took the sweater deal.....

I think there are two definite ways to see this - as you do and as I do. Having experienced 'love at first sight', ugh that sounds so corny! And it's not like you lay eyes on someone and go all gooey. I'd sort of seen my hubs briefly a couple of times, but then suddenly I realised that this was the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. Of course, we kinda needed to go on a date first! But something inside just told me that this was it - no angels singing, no exploding fireworks, no soft focus lovey dovey moments. Just a clear certainty that this was the right path for me.
And I got the feeling from the movie that that's how it was with Daniel. It just all seemed crystal clear to him - that was the path he had to follow. Even if it had all been wonderful back home for him, he would still have made that choice.
He's a guy who was willing to stand up in front of his peers and risk his academic reputation and face ridicule. That to me isn't the sort of guy who would just leave everything because the going got rough.

Hmm - as the new person I'll just barge in with my thoughts here.
Daniel, being among other things an athropologist, would know not to insult anyone by turning Sha're down. And yes, I think our happy, affable archaeologist could fall in love with someone he's stuck with on a wonderful new planet who treats him normally (as opposed to some sort of God, like Daniel spoke about in the pilot) I think Daniel did love him. Bearing in mind that love itself is not limited, you can love more than one person in your life, you just love each person slightly differently.
Although personally, I'm a Jack/Daniel shipper - "FIND HIM!" > Icon

While I think showing Past and Present right after FIAD was a bad scheduling choice, I can also understand why Daniel fell for Kyra so quickly. He'd been loyal to Sha're for three years, and it was finally over. Here was a woman he was attracted to and there was nothing standing in the way of his feelings (well, not at first).
I think it's rather like someone who has a family who is slowly dying of an incurable illness; at the end, mixed in with horrible, gut-wrenching grief is also the feeling of relief that it's finally over. While this causes many people unnecessay guilt, it's a normal reaction.
I would think that's part of the way Daniel felt in FIAD. He must have known, deep inside himself, that the Sha're he'd loved on Abydos was never going to be returned to him, and that the best he could hope for was exactly what happened. Whether he ever admitted it to himself is a whole nother thing, but I think his subconsious was facing the truth.
So when Kyra popped up, he was ripe for a rebound romance. And lets face it: the man hadn't been getting any for three years (voluntarily) although I don't believe for a second that he and Kyra 'did it.' Not on base in an unlocked room with guards standing outside!
Not that this has anything to do with anything, I just thought I'd start a new subject <G>

I too agree that it was not the brightest scheduling choice. I do realize that Sha're had technically been lost to Daniel for 3 years but there had still been the hope that they could find her and remove the symbiote and Daniel remained faithful to her. Here you had this incredible episode in which Daniel is forced to come to terms with the fact that he's not going to get Sha're back and it's emotional and wrenching and then directly afterwards he hooks up with someone else.
As far as Kira goes, I didn't mind her and I thought that the whole Kira/Linea/what makes a person evil story was quite interesting. And I don't for a second think that anything other than a kiss went on in that room. ;)

If it had been months after Sha're's death and he was attracted to someone else I could understand it better. Of course, I'm of the Daniel/Sha're OTP mindset, so it's hard to see him with anyone else.
They have never worked another woman into Daniel's live. I believe the motto is if you're in the SGC, you must have no personal life. :p

I've never been fond of romance in action/adventure/drama/whetever shows, and I probably wouldn't have enjoyed Daniel/Sha're if they'd saved her and she'd become a regular (not to mention that I much prefer the movie actress in the role rather than VB). I've no clue why, but I'm more of a buddy-team person. Like, I read the Hardy Boys rather than Nancy Drew <G>

LOL-- it sure seems that way doesn't it? I'm bit sure I'd want to see another woman in his life. On the one hand, I hate that he's alone and I think that everyone should have that one person who's the other half of thier soul. On the other hand, I probably wouldn't like it if I had to watch it! Go figure.
Yes, I know I'm weird.

I don't have a problem with the timing of Kiera.
Ever the lazybones, I'm just going to c&p what I put in the Past Present thread:
It's not uncommon for people who are bereaved with a lot of notice to 'move on' more quickly than those who lose their partner suddenly. My next door neighbour, my uncle, Paul McCartney and Nigella Lawson, each totally devoted to their partners for many many years, all remarried or got seriously reattatched within a year of losing their partners to cancer. It doesn't speak to me of lack of respect or love for the deceased, but of them having done their grieving and mourning before the death, and with the support of their partner. It might well be an easier way to mourn, and leave the survivor more ready to heal.

That's a good point, Madeleine, I hadn't thought of that. I'd still have liked at least one episode between them, but it makes perfect sense the way you explained it.

So. As this is the Daniel Discussion and *Appreciation* Thread, what is it about Daniel that you appreciate most?
If he's your favorite character, what made you choose him?
Would you still love him if he wasn't such a blue-eyed, handsome hunk?

My favorite trait about Daniel is that he is not afraid of his convictions. He stands up for his beliefs even if they go against the majority. He is also the most compasionate .

I think the thing that I appreciate most about Daniel is his spirit. What I mean by that, is Daniel acts as the voice of reason for the team in many situations, he's the one that looks at everything from all sides. He asks the questions that no one else would think of (refer to "The Other Side). But at the same time he can appreciate the "military" side of things when needed and can handled himself in a combate situation (espically now) as well as just about anyone else. Also, Daniel has never been afraid to allow his emotions show, that's something I greatly admire in a man, (too many men fight to hard to hide emotion and that's just not good in my book)
I think my statements above have everything to do with why he's my favorite character ( but Michael Shanks' looks didn't hurt either)
As for the last part of that queston....yep probably, I just love the character that much.

I really like his humanity and his compassion. Also his brain. There's just something about knowing how much brilliance is floating around in that brain of his that makes me like him even more. He's so brilliant and yet he never acts like a know-it-all.
