This is my thread for feeling sorry for myself. :P I'm going to come here and whine whenever I feel put-upon, ostracized, ridiculed or other cold prickly-type things. :P
Luke is in charge of food, here. He likes me. :) Jonas is in charge of the comfort department, although if anyone else shows up here needing to sulk, there MIGHT be others available for comforting. If I'm in the mood to allow it. :P Jonas is off limits, tho. And we don't wanna distract Luke. ;)

Have you moved in the armed couches with the special cloaking devices yet? Sulking once in awhile is a good thing...it keeps folks in a good mood otherwise, well, MOST folks hehehe :D .

And see?? I can be a good girl. I'm keeping this Offworld where it won't affect my post count. :P

Careful Shadow! I might come in and Hug ya! :D
Hugs are outlawed. There's a very protective byakhee on duty who might do terrible things. :P Assuming Luke doesn't poison you first. ;)
Ya know, I'm sorry, but for pity's sake, EVERYONE loves Jack and Daniel. It's practically like saying "water is wet". I just thought it'd be nice if FOR ONCE there was a place where everyone ELSE actually stood a chance of getting some limelight. YES, people love Jack, YES people love Daniel, but aren't there enough threads about that already?? What about the underdogs, the forgotten characters, and the sidelined heroes like Siler Luke and Teal'c??

Sorry Shadow.Honest.I value the "Underdogs" too.
I suppose the divisions are too much to expect everyone to suddenly forget
stuff they said and make a real bridge.
I'll leave you in peace for a bit.Ho-Hum.

Sorry Shadow.Honest.I value the "Underdogs" too.
Not your fault. It's that curse-able fairness thing. It's only fair that everyone should be able to post on SCAT, but gods forbid anyone should actually think, "Hey, there are already bunches of posts about Jack and Daniel, let's concentrate on the others!"
And, ya know, I'm not saying either of them are unattractive. I think Daniel can be pretty hot, but it just feels so REDUNDANT when it's Jack or Daniel.

Don't worry Shadow,I'm sure that we can have our say too! :D And Often! :D
S.C.A.T. is, at worst, available as a choice for other Posters to air their Faves in public.Tough if we don't just like J or D.
I haven't really got an "at Best" ambition....except that with the w/e coming up,maybe some of the Male Posters might have time to share their Faves too!
Oh,well,I've maybe too much faith in this, but at least we're free to use the chance to Post our own Faves!
On the other hand, maybe even after only 2 hrs actual sleep,my Cursed Cheery nature is getting the better of my more cynical side. ;)

Aww, Petzke. I think Luke has some Stewart's in the fridge. Cream soda, black cherry, orange & cream, some of everything.
I wish Teal'c was real, he'd be my friend.
I think Teal'c could be wandering around here, if you wanna grab him and gab for a while. Closest I can offer to the "real" thing. ;)

Ha! The sulky thread is much stronger than that! Heck, it has to put up with MY sulks, so it's gotta be tougher than diamond... but a lot more flexible and not as sparkly.

Ok,Shadow, time to have a quick sulk,if you'll have me after all the Cheeriness!
I HATE,loathe and Bl#### Detest,so-called "British" Food.Yuk!
Every other country in the World seems to have dibs on imagination where common items can be combined in almost any way to be more interesting.
IMO,here in Britain, veg and meat have horrible, sloppy things done to them.
I mean, where's the fun in eating if the only way to get anything decent is to
constantly use a fave take-out restaurant,or spend ages ploughing through the cookery books?
Believe me Fish and Chips is quite nice, but not so good for the body.Haggis is IMO,something dreamt up by some sick weirdo, with a fetish for Awful Offal.
I could list more truly disgusting "Dishes"....but the ingredient list, and cooking methods, for "Black Pudding",are just too vile to put in P.G. terms!
The reason for this Sulk/Pout/Raving ?
Everyone who mentions Food in their postings seems able to freely obtain loads of items, that I can't buy here in the UK!
(Ben and Jerry's,Decent Cream Soda,in this Thread alone!)
I'm hungry, and whingy today. That Evil Sun got me unawares. So did my Allergies and I needed a nice moan.Sorry if anyone British is offended, but I mean it about the Cr### food!

You can't get Ben and Jerry's in the UK?! AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!! I'm so very sorry. That's the most awful thing I've ever heard. (While munching on Chunky Monkey) And Henry Wienhards (sp?) cream soda is the best ever. Expensive but yummy.
Black pudding creeps me out. I thought it was a joke the first time I heard what was in it. And Haggis?! I don't even know any Scots who actually eat that crap. The thing I like about living in America (and I'm not trying to say that America is better than anyone else, believe me) is that there are so many different cultures here that you can pretty much get any kind of food there is. Pretty much. My personal favorite is good old fashioned Louisiana gumbo made by my Aunt Pat. Mmmmm.
ShadowMaat
May 22nd, 2004, 02:34 PM
I am incredibly irritated that America doesn't import Wonderbars from Canada. You can find Aero bars and Cadbury Flake and a few others, but no Wonderbars and I am absolutely addicted to them! I have to stock up on them when I go to Gatecon and then try and control myself to make my supply last as long as possible. I'm beginning to think that American chocolate in general is kinda inferior...
I've seen some pretty scary "British" dishes, but probably every country has its share of freaky foods, some just have more than others. ;)
I was always kinda partial to the ploughman's lunch- just bread and cheese, but who really needs anything more than that? ;) Maybe grab a sausage or something with it just for extra flavor.
Ben & Jerrys- One Sweet Whirled and Phish Food are my faves. Hey, did anyone ever figure out what flavors Teal'c and Jonas were eating in Unnatural Selection? ;) There's also a brand called Turkey Hill which has some kind of peanut butter swirl thing which is most excellent. And you get more for your $$ than you do with B&J's.
Shipperahoy
May 22nd, 2004, 02:37 PM
Yes, American chocolate is definately inferior. I've been told with great authority that Hershey's is in fact not even chocolate. Ghiradelli's is pretty good but I've been told there is no chocolate like German chocolate. In fact I've been promised some Lindt chocolate and I may have to beat my postman since it hasn't arrived yet.
Bagpuss
May 22nd, 2004, 02:44 PM
Whining won't help me I know, but the B+J ice cream situation in the UK is that
Age-Old British Shopkeepers' Excuse:"Oh,never heard of that" or the one that really peeves me,namely:"There's no demand for it"!!!
I mean if there was really no demand, why the Heck would I be asking?
If there was more flipping food choice, the grocery and retail trade would soon see there's a "Demand" and not just keep stocking the same old boring choices!
I'm afraid plenty Scots do indeed eat the Horrid Haggis!Just not this one!
It's still a Scottish Delicacy best consumed NEVER,as far as I'm concerned.
My family up in Scotland eat the Cursed stuff regularly, and they can keep it.I know what's in it and I can't see what the attraction is!
Keep thinking of Emigrating to USA or Canada,as it seems like Foodie Heaven.
*Sighs and drools at thought of trying proper Gumbo* :)

While sojurning in London in my salad days, I horrified my landlady by making a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner and having all my college chums over to eat it. She couldn't understand the appeal of turkey with dressing, mashed potatoes drowned in gravy and mince pie (okay, pumpkin was hard to come by!) One of my fondest memories of that semester - having Thanksgiving in April - at nearly the end of the semester.

I'm good with a leg of lamb and some roasted potatoes, and I make swede very well, but that's about the extent of my "English" cuisine. I'd like to learn to make Yorkshire puddings to serve with the lamb, but I haven't been able to find a proper pan here in Texas. OH! And I make a good trifle. Not that nasty stuff with the colored gelatin soaked cake - I use good brandy and Kaluha (to soak the cake and flavor the whipped cream), fresh raspberries, shaved chocolate and a rich pound cake.

If you want B&J in the UK, the best places to try are Safeway, the Co-op, Tescos, Sainsbury's. Or the Apollo Video Shop on Crowborough High Street. They all stock it.

It is a good point about British food. In this country we have Italian, Indian, French, Chinese, Thai and even American restaurants, but the only time you find somewhere in a foreign country advertising British food, especially in Europe, you normally find either there is a large British Ex-Pat community, or the place is a mainly Brit. frequented holiday resort.
A lot of the problem, IMO, is that the British climate is not condusive to growing the more exotic ingredients. For hundreds of years the main crops grown in this country were root veg. and orchard fruits, and this will limit the style of food.
Britain is now a very multi-cultural society though, and it is becoming harder to point at particular dishes and say "That is British, that is not", after all Chiken Tikka Massala was invented in this country, and is not, strictly speaking, an Indian dish. But it is now, according to a recent survey, more popular than fish and chips.
So really, it all comes down to how you define a nation's food. Is it what is seen as "traditional" such as bangers 'n mash or roast beef and yorkshire pud, or is it what is popular?

Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are islands off the coast of Massachusetts. And yeah, Nantucket is famous for that limerick. ;) The Vineyard is mostly known for the Kennedy disasters (Ted drowning his girlfriend in a car accident, John Jr. for drowning himself and a few others in a plane crash) and because that fool Clinton spent a few summers here. I love Hersey chocolates, especially Kisses and the plain Hershey Bars....*whines & sulks* Just as I thought I couldn't feel any lower, I sink even further...I need a Hershey bar.:(
England would probably be my second choice, although I'm still appalled that "you people" actually charge folks for packets of ketchup/tomato sauce/whatever in your McDonalds'. That's just... WRONG. :p Australia's (Sydney anyway) the same. I really hate it when I buy french fries and I have to pay $0.40 (40c) for a sweet and sour sauce!
Although I was about ready to marry a Canadian to get there when I found out that they get a year paid maternity leave while I got a mere 6 weeks paid. At least you actually get paid 6 weeks (is that a government policy?) Here women don't get paid Maternity Leave unless you work for certain companies who have it in their policy or work as a Public servant. Otherwise, nutta! A major sulk from my part on this one.

Yes, I was told by my friends across the pond that Hershey's is a poor imitation of real chocolate and having received what was quite possibly the best package ever (filled to the brim with German chocolate) I have to say that I agree. Although I don't share the disdain for Hershey's that they seem to it does seem inferior. But it will definately do on a day to day basis.

Yes it's a government policy. We get a 6 week government paid disability leave. I can't believe that you don't get any at all. Everyone else I've talked to have had far far better maternity leave options than us. I've even heard tales of people who've been able to take 18 months leave. I feel slightly better about the crappy system here now though. I guess I should just be happy that we get any paid leave at all.

This whole thing with Sam has really started to get on my nerves, lately. I mean, are TPTB really that clueless about women? They've managed to go for almost six years without resorting to surgically removing Sam's backbone, so why have they done so now?
I still say it's because they're running out of ideas. "When in doubt, ship ship ship!" :P
And what's with all the, "Hi! I'm new!" posts in the general forum? Whatever happened to looking around before you post something? *sigh* I suppose having a sticky note telling people where to put it (their intro posts, I mean) would be pointless. Either it wouldn't get read (why read a forum before you post??) or they'd think that meant you should put your intros in a reply to the sticky. *grumble* Kids these days, they have no sense of propriety... :P

Well, it isn't Sam's fault, she can only be the way she's written. I just think she could be written a hell of a lot better.
And I agree. I think part of the reason my upsettedness with the show is so catastrophic is that I really admired TPTB. I looked up to them. I thought they did great work and managed to keep Stargate interesting even when monkey wrenches like Shanks's departure got thrown at them. I put them into a category with Glen (and Darin) Morgan & James Wong, the guys who inspired me to want to be a screenwriter. And then, suddenly (and it did seem very sudden), everything went horribly horribly wrong. It was as if TPTB as a whole had been replaced by pod people- guys who took the easy way out and recycled stories rather than trying anything original or daring, guys who created characters just to service a plot point rather than making them a part of the story, guys who don't know how real people- how real women act! To have everything I loved about the show come crashing down around me because the people I had admired so much didn't seem to care anymore...! It was very harsh for me, and despite it all, despite my massive disillusionment and bitter resentment, I still managed to be completely appalled by Joe Mallozzi's defining Pete as a "cloying boyfriend", possibly because I liked Joe and Paul most out of the group. And now I'm shocked to find that Amanda is spouting rhetoric that isn't a hell of a lot better. I know they're all "only human" but it's still upsetting, especially when they go from being only human to being something even less.

**All whining IMO!!!**
Would the whole Chimera ep and the Polarised Opinions about Pete have been better handled, if they'd had the forethought to introduce him,via Sam's brother, "on-screen" a few eps earlier?
Or had Daniel introduce Pete to Sam,under the same circumstances?
Would have worked better for me!
Say if Pete had just happened along, rather than suddenly appearing, having been portrayed (deliberately or not) by the PTB, as an over needy Stalker,at the Stake-Out,would that have been better received?
According to the Spoilers, and other snippets,P.S. will be in several eps in S8.
If the writing/direction is anything like the Chimera ep,I'll be chewing the Remote Control.....and in a Sulk again!
As for AT and her interview remarks,no idea if she was being quoted elsewhere out of context, or whether she was being facetious.

I think that people would hate Pete no matter what, but yes, his introduction could have and should have been a lot better than it was and I think if it had there would be fewer objections. I've known guys like Pete who get very serious very fast, and they're all really nice guys but if you portray them bare-bones and out of context like Pete was, they'd probably look creepy, too.

Sorry, but a lemon Kit-Kat is just wrong. You don't mess with my chocolate! Inferior American stuff it may be, but it's still chocolate! You don't go adding crazy flavors all willy-nilly. I also object to any of the other "new" twists on classics that have been cropping up- reverse oreos, reverse peanut utter cups (those are just plain nasty!), things with new flavors, more things being reversed or "inside out". I mean, I'm all for change, but these all reek of gimmick and not as actual attempts to broaden culinary horizons. They're trying to make money! Pleasing the public has nothing to do with it. Hmph.
Sorry ya missed the article, FH. Dunno why it got snipped, unless there are rules about not posting full articles or if there was something about spoilers or whatever, but it really didn't sound good. More stories based on the personal lives of the characters, rather than actual plotlines. More of Sam deciding that Pete's a good shag until she can nab Jack, more of the tepid effluvia which has infected the show already... only it'll be more pronounced, more blaming all the problems on "budget concerns" rather than the failings of the writers. :P

Now to the really important issue:Choccy!
I get in a real "Sulk" when the makers of my fave brands suddenly decide to change the balance of ingredients, and call it "New and Improved"!
I don't know all the US names for some of my Faves, but I got really uptight when they changed the "Mars Bar" mix to a bland, sticky mess years ago.
Supposedly, the inner mousse was deemed too heavy, but I liked the "Old" filling better!
Hands off the "Dairy Milk" Bar, Choccie Manufacturers....or face a really big protest....sometimes this cat has claws! ;)
I have to say I really enjoy some American Chocs, esp Reece Peanut Butter Cups..don't think I'd care for the "Reversed" ones either.
Over here there are absolutely loads of ice cream versions of the top Chocs.
Fine as a choice, for braver souls, but I find them too sickly sweet!

I mean, a pic like yours is OK, Nola, or the one I had, but there are people with HUGE pics that take up half the screen! That's a little bit much, IMO, especially for folks on dialup. Cr@p like that screws it up for them 'cause it'll take forever to load and if a lot of people start doing it not only will it look bad, but the actual content of the posts will get lost amid all those stupid-ass sigs. Poor Shadow. I've gotten like 8 reputation notices but 6 of them I have no idea if they were meant to be positive or negative and there's nothing special about the posts that they were meant for so it's really hard to tell. It drives me completely bonkers. Unfortunately, if you're one of those people with strong opinions and absolutely no problem expressing them (and methinks perhaps you are ;) ) then there will be people who take exeption to it. Yes, I've given out only a couple of repuation notices and they were positive. If I ever give out a negative one it would have to be for something big. I try to take it seriously and don't want to just give out random reputation points (except when it was just us mods playing around here before it was open to the public, then we went nuts :D ) so it's usually if I see a post I think it exceptional in some way. Whether is was extremely articulate or helped to diffuse a tense situation in some way or something along those lines. I'd like for it to mean something. I got a gray point just for opening up the new Shipper thread when the old had hit the 1,000 post mark. As a general rule, I don't like long hair on guys. I think it makes them look sloppy. David Hewlett's was OK in Boa vs. Python... but even that was pushing it a bit. And Corin's hair... I had a hard time accepting it last year, but I finally managed to like it. Or tolerate it. But I've seen pics of him from this year and... urg. I'm sorry, but it looks awful. HE looks awful! Scruffy and emaciated. Adele says the long hair and weight loss was for a film role and that by Gatecon he'll probably look different. Hopefully he'll cut his hair. ;) I prefer military style haircuts. Not necessarily crewcuts, but definitely short and neat. And no facial hair! BLAH!

But it's very much vice versa with women. I think most women look better with longer hair. I think it makes them look younger. I liked AT with her super short hair but I prefer it a wee bit longer. Longer hair looks good on a lot of people, but it takes far more upkeep, and messing about,to achieve "Hirsute Nirvana".
One of my friends has an absolutely beautiful Mane, but it takes her about two hours to wash, style and dry! I just don't have the time or dedication to devote that kind of effort to my mop.
My hair is bit like Sam/AT's Season 6 style, but dark brown and getting very grey.

I'm wondering:Might it help or make things even more confused to move the whole "Welcome to new Members" Thread to Gen Disc?(To say nothing of the whole thing about Post Counts? Egads! :S )
Saying "Hi, I'm new! I love Stargate!" doesn't actually have anything to do with Stargate, it has to do with the person making the post. that's why it's in the Off Topic section. So no, it has no place in Gen Disc and it shouldn't be there. I don't think it's asking to much to require people to actually THINK once in a while. Although some would probably say that my demands in general are outrageous and impossible to achieve. :P
Why is it so difficult to READ before you post? And why, when you ask people to do it, do they generally get bent out of shape and ***** about there being thousands of posts? I'm not saying read ALL of them, but it doesn't take much to skim over things and get a general feel for a board.
I think I have only ever twice posted on a new board without investigating it first. Once it was a software glitch related question on the software's board. Nobody answered, but some similar questions popped up and I got enough out of them to solve the prob. And once it was just a question that had been bugging me about the original Stargate score (what was being chanted and in what language) and I was having a hard time understanding the set-up on the composer's fanboard, so I just skimmed lightly and posted the Q. Everyone knew what I was talking about, but no one had the slightest idea what the answer was. ;)
I'm sorry, but it just seems rude to me NOT to at least skim over things before I post somewhere. Part of it is because of all the aggravation I've suffered on boards, watching people post the same bloody things over and over, but I was doing it before I was really hooked on boards, too.
And ya know what, you don't even have to read the entire board. Just look at the stupid sections!! Off Topic Chatter is right friggen there! Although hey, even Stargate Fandom would be closer to the mark than Gen Disc. Maybe it's an ego thing. I hate making intro posts anyway, but if I was gonna, I'd look for the place where it would be least in the way. I'm not brazen enough to hop into the middle of the most active forum and say, "Hi! I'm here! Look at me!" unless I have some actual on-topic CONTENT to post with it! :P

Brains? That assuming facts not in evidence for some folks. Most folks are just so excited by finding other fans that they "speak" before they think...or read. I always try to cut newbies a little slack and gently welcome them with the suggestion of where to post such things. Actually, that's more true on other bboards than here. I received a gray point in that same Corin Nemec thread. I think my post was something fascinating about how I'd heard Corin was a lot thinner or something. I think what's happening is someone is just fooling around giving reputation points - perhaps trying to give out enough points to a bunch of different posters so they can go back and give a point to the one they're really aiming at.
I wouldn't take anything too seriously at this juncture, people are still trying out features, etc. The only reputation points I would pay any attention to are the ones accompanied by comments, at least you know what someone liked or disliked.
Shadow, you're going to get a lot of reputation marks, probably both green and red, because you're an opinionated, articulate poster. I'd embrace it, it means people actually read and have a response to something you wrote.

Season 2 hair was good. The hair in early season 4 was too long, looked kind of limp. Then it got too short when she cut it.
Some men can pull off the long hair, but it takes a certain style. I thought Keith Hamilton Cobb looked exotic with his long hair, his short style makes him rather ordinary. Likewise, Viggo's long hair in LOTR looked pretty sexy (although I wanted to wash it a couple of times ;) Now Tom Cruise looks silly with long hair, Brad Pitt's long hair doesn't do much for me either.

In some cases, it also depends on the role as to whether or not the long hair looks good. In "modern" movies, I tend to think it looks pretty tacky, but if it's Middle Ages or Elizabethan or something, it seems a little more "appropriate". Dunno how Historically Accurate it is, but it seems to have become an acceptable cliche. HOWEVER... when "warriors" have long hair, I always question it because I always get the impression that a real warrior would tend to favor short hair- that whole "enemies grabbing you by the hair" thing... which could be just as Historically Inaccurate, for all I know. ;) I just think that hair should fit under a helmet if you're going into battle. It would also save you from getting your hair all mucky with blood and gore and mud and less pleasant substances.

Well I personally have closed down and redirected 4 newbie threads to the Welcome New Members thread. I always worry that I'm going to scare them off when their first post results in a virtual smack on the hand but I try to be as nice as possible. It can get old but I don't really get annoyed because I was new once too and I made my fair share of little mistakes.
Back to the long hair on men topic I have to agree with the yummy Viggo as Aragorn. And Orlando looked really good in that movie too. But in a current setting there are very few men I like with long hair and almost none that I don't think would look better with it short.

You're right. Current day setting is hard. I did think James Spader looked cuter with his floppy "Daniel" hair rather than the short cut he has in "The Practice". Uh....Johnny Depp? As long as it's not stringy and hanging in his eyes he looks pretty good with that chin-length floppy hair -- at least he did at the Oscars. I haven't seen it short recently so hard to compare.

Y'know, now that I've unlocked the avs, I've noticed something really weird: almost none of them are smiling.
Of the basic avs, Jack is smirking, Sam has a full-blown smile, Reese is smiling, and only 7 of the 68 "allies" are smiling... and even a few of them have more of a "baring teeth" expression than a definite smile.
Of the next level, only SIX are definitely smiling with maybe two or three additional ones with possibly happy expressions.
I love the avs. I love them. And I probably wouldn't choose a smiley av, myself, but what's with the ban on happiness? I mean, come on, even JONAS isn't smiling! ;) I'm sure it has to do with what pics were available and/or David simply not noticing, but it just hits me oddly. Urgo isn't smiling, either. And a couple of other ones I consider to be perpetual smilers.
Maybe there's another av level full of shiny happy people. ;)
Anyway, I'm not complaining, I just find it a little weird.
I also wonder how long those avs were unlocked before I noticed them. ;)

No filth! Just the quaint name for steamed dough pudding, which usually contains loads of currants and suchlike. It is formed into a spherical shape ,wrapped in muslin cloth and steamed gently till ready.
Delicious if made correctly....yukky if not!

Here's a joke to brighten poor Shadow's miserable day.
A guy walks into a bar and asks the bartender if he will give him a free beer if he shows him something amazing. The bartender agrees, so the guys pulls out a hamster, who begins dancing and singing "Tuff Enuff" by the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
"That IS amazing!" says the bartender and gives the guy his free beer.
"If I show you something else amazing, will you give me another beer?" The bartender agrees, so the guy pulls out a small piano and a hamster and a frog. Now the hamster plays the piano while the frog dances and sings "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
The bartender, completely wowed, gives him another beer. A man in a suit, who's been watching the entire time, offers to buy the frog for a princely sum, which the man agrees to.
"Are you nuts?" asks the bartender. "You could've made a fortune off that frog."
"Can you keep a secret?" asks the man. "The hamster's a ventriloquist."

Heh. Thanks for the jokes and the support. I could probably deal with people asking me why I'm interested in S8 if they asked nicely. But saying things like, "I don't see why anyone who isn't watching the show would post here" or "You people make me laugh" just isn't conducive to conversation. It reads (to me) as passing judgement. If you want to know something, just ask! But ask nicely. "If you think the show is tanking, how come you're interested in S8?" or "If you're posting here, does that mean you think S8 is salvageable?" or "What is it about S8 that you find so post-worthy?" There are many ways to ask me a question without questioning me. And for pity's sake, try reading what I say! I answered the "why are YOU here?" question the first time someone went snotty at me. And if you don't understand, ask for clarification, don't re-ask the original question in the same supercilious tone, especially not if you saw how irritated it made me the first time.
I'm sorry, but I happen to like it here. I have a lot of fun when I'm not being pissed off at people sniping at me and I've personally found a lot of good conversations here, including one or two where I'm NOT being "negative". :P

I don't think that talking about other members posts in a thread other than the one that they posted in (especially in a negative light) is a good idea. If you have a problem with a certain person's post or you feel that it is inappropriate then the best idea is to carry on a conversation directly with that person on that thread or via private message. If someone came along and saw that they were being vented about it could cause problems. Talking about other members by name and critisizing a post that they have made is just cause for hard feelings.

No problems guys. I hope I didn't come across as unduly harsh. I wasn't passing judgement on the *actual* criticisms being expressed as I agree that protected threads are sometimes not treated as actual protected threads I was just pointing out that forum rules prohibit spefic posts and members being discussed outside the actual thread said post originated from and that it could cause misunderstandings. As this is a sulky thread it's perfectly alright to vent about the fact that you're annoyed that people don't repsect protected threads but specific posts and names should be left out.

Gonna finish the thought I started in the ship discussion thread since it was off topic there although I'll probably still get in trouble for the... er... impurity of the thought and the extreme double entendre-ness of the sentence.
...[it] made for some nice mental imagery of Jonas being handcuffed and tossed overboard and me...
...going down to rescue him. :D
Speaking in a strictly literal and puritanical way, it's a very noble and "right" thing to do. :D
Speaking in OTHER terms, well... that definitely wouldn't be very PG of me. ;)

I know this is Shadow's sulky thread but can I sulk for a minute about being in a wierd shipper limbo? I'm not shipper enough to really post in the Sam/Jack Ship Discussion thread as I'm not really into overt ship and don't really want any explicit scenes between the two, but I'm certainly not an ant-shipper so I can't post there. Nor am I noromo or any other group that I can think of. I'm without a home. What's a girl to do? Sniffle sniffle.

Isn't that partly what the ship discussion thread is for? So people from both sides (and ranging from extremes to milds) can express their views and try to find a happy medium? ;)
You could always start a Subtle Ship thread or something. Then just ignore the groans of people as they see YET ANOTHER ship thread start up. ;)
Shipperahoy
June 6th, 2004, 11:56 PM
Yes, well I think I'll forgo starting another ship thread. It's weird though because I used to be much more of a shipper, in fact I started the original shipper thread on the Delphi forum, but after season 7 I've backed off considerably. The ship thread was nice in that I could go there and actually talk about ship without arguing about it and the anti-shippers have that with their thread. You're probably the wrong person to be complaining to about ship problems :D ;) but I just felt in a weird place. Besides I have a feeling that there wouldn't be too many people posting in a Subtle ship thread. People like me seem to be few and far between. People tend to either REALLY like ship or REALLY hate it.
O.k. I'll stop the poor me pity party now.

To be honest, I'm more of a subtle than overt shipper. So at least you're not alone. I do love ship but when it's kept subtle it's so much better...it's all about the subtext y'know!! The S7 ship was more about the text IMO. (Does that make sense?? :) )

Another thing that is really starting to get on my nerves is the server hosting the Forums. It seems like every day- or at least every other day, something goes wrong with it. Sometimes it's just down for a few minutes, but other times it's down for HOURS. I may be exagerrating the problem slightly, but if is DEFNITELY more problematic than Delphi in terms of access. Why is this? Part of the wonderment of moving on to Bigger & Better Things? 'Cause it irritates me. I like having this place as an outlet, I like reading what others have to think (even though THAT pisses me off too, sometimes), I do NOT like being denied by a stupid SERVER.
Is this an ongoing problem with the server? Or is the server a particular target of hackers and other morons? Why? Hmph! Stupid people. Stupid server. It's tediously boring when I can't compulsively check activity on the board. Or reply to something inane, or to at least decide for MYSELF that there's nothing of interest for the moment. *sigh* And *grrr* too.
One SLIGHT advantage. I finally became so horrifyingly bored that I started typing up my Jonas/Nirrti sequel. Only 12 more handwritten pages to go. *sigh* And I write really small. *double sigh*

I'm so with you Shadow! I'm hooked on checking in with the forum daily so not being able to access it drives me batty. They said last time that they had fixed the problem but apparently that's not the case.
On a bright note, and I know this is supposed to be a sulky thread, but I'm exited. I attend the Chat with Kristen chats on Mondays at E-online and she's never answered any of my questions but she answered 2 today so I'm really really happy. What can I say? It doesn't take all that much to make me happy.

Heh. I attended a SCIFI chat with Morgan & Wong once. I think I had about six questions. Every single one of them got asked. I ended up scrabbling desperately, trying to come up with more, and every one of THEM got asked, too. Dunno who the sick b@stard was who was running that chat, but he left me completely unnerved. :S I guess that was payback for all the times I'd complained about my questions never getting asked. I'm a lot more cautious about that sort of thing now. ;) One or two would have been fine, but ALL of them... that's just way too spotlighty for me.

While I grumble about people trying to take threads off topic (or at least try taking protected threads off topic) I don't mind it happening from time to time (in the appropriate places) and as I've said, I've done it myself. But despite my grumbling, I'm not a thread nazi either, throwing a hissy fit every time someone says the slightest thing off target. I hate people who do that. I mean, jeez, lighten up. If someone is posting anti-ship stuff on a ship thread, that's one thing, and if the OT continues for a while, that's another thing, too, but if someone is just following a secondary line of thought, for pity's sake let it go. It isn't hurting anything and the main gist of the thread is still there. Cool off and remember that YOUR posts aren't more any important than anyone else's.
My posts, on the other hand, are obviously better than everyone's. :P

Well what really made me happy is that one of my questions was about Gilmore Girls and if they were going to continue to go forward with the Luke/Lorelei romance instead of backpedaling like most shows normally do. And she answered it. Woo hoo! And my second question was regarding the health of Andy Hallett (Lorne on Angel) because he collapsed and was taken to the hospital. It turns out that he had a viral infection in his heart that caused it to become enlarged and he had a mild heart attack, but he's on the mend. I'm glad cuz I absolutely love him.

To be honest, I figured the unlock point was somewhere around 2000-2500 and that there was no point in "racing" for it because it'd still take me forever to get there. Then I hooked up with a bad lot and next thing I knew I'd left then-leader TameFarrar in the dust. ;) I was curious about the avs and I have a competitive streak, but neither was strong enough to make me consciously run up my numbers. I still find my count a little unnerving and I kinda feel like I'm running around with a target painted on my head.
Would I have made fewer posts if I'd known the number was lowered? Probably not, but I'd probably have dragged my feet over the last few. I avoided those last five before the 1000 mark for as long as I could, then I got irritated on some discussion thread and that was that. ;)

I don't know why the chattier posts are bothering me all of a sudden. Probably just because the chatty stuff isn't anything I'm interested in whereas I AM interested in the supposed subjects of the threads where the chattiness seems to be happening.
It's very very different being on the outside of things, very frustrating and I'm half-convinced I should go back and delete some of my stupider posts. Except that they're all far in the past, now, so it's too little, too late to do any good and deleting half a convo would only make things MORE confusing if anyone were to read through old threads.
I also have to resist the compulsion to try and maintain my "lead" in the post count, which is funny, since my post count is one thing making me very self-conscious. Thus far, it's pretty easy to resist and now that I have a deeper awareness of the chattiness thing I can hopefully avoid doing it again. Except on threads like this one, where it's relatively out of the way and doesn't hurt anything. ;)
I probably haven't made myself many friends by complaining to the "offenders", but urrg! Were my posts ever that pointless?? I'm almost afraid to look. ;)

Even I tend to go off track every once in a while and I'm a mod. Especially when there are certain people who I enjoy conversing with and I end up having whole conversations with them. :D But being a mod I tend to try to keep myself under control. Or I respond to said person but then also throw in a little something about the topic so it won't be completely OT.
ShadowMaat
June 10th, 2004, 06:50 AM
I know things go off track and I know I've done it myself but I just can't shake the feeling that it was all intentional and a deliberate effort to run up post counts. I guess the "boasting" each person did about how close they were getting and "only five more to go! Geen, amybe I'll post about such-and-such" didn't help, either.
I know this board is meant to be a place to have fun and I certainly don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but it still aggravates me to see/think about it. I think it's also the conversational tone of some of the posts that bothers me. The
So how are you?
Oh, I'm fine.
That's good. Did you watch that show last night?
Yes, I did.
What did you think of it?
I didn't like it too much.
Really? I did.
And so on, and so on...
I understand the importance and fun of chat posts, but also I feel that this is what the Off Topic section is for, NOT a "real" post in the middle of the Stargate section.
Whatever. It's still aggravating, so maybe my best bet is just to forget about it and if I see it happening on another thread, I'll stop visiting that thread. :( I will, however, defend the Dr. Rodney McKay thread and certain others and make sure that they stay more or less on topic. ;)
I could always put the people in question on my ignore list, but I really like them and they DO have some good stuff to contribute... when they feel like it. ;) I think that's partly why I find it upsetting: I know these guys are good, but... *shrug*
I'm feeling really guilty about whining to Darren about lowering the number and then broadcasting the approximate range OF that number. Shou;d have kept my mouth shut on both counts. Although I HAVE been refusing to comment on the avs themselves, beyond general broad hints. Maybe Darren should keep changing the number. That'd really mess people up. ;)

I like that thought. :) But yeah, as FH pointed out, Offworld stuff doesn't count for anything, which is why I figure it's the best place for chatty things like this thread and TLW and all the others. There have, however, been a few threads in the Stargate-oriented sections which seem to have served no purpose but to bump up numbers. "Forget about your post count and make your posts count." That's brilliant, that is. ;)
FH, I don't think JPrime was having a "dig" at anyone, just backing me up on my complaint. Thanks for that, BTW, JP. I was starting to get self-conscious about it... I still am, actually, but it's nice to know I'm not alone. ;)

As long as this accursed forum keeps crashing every other day, I'll have plenty to sulk about, believe me. :P
I'm also frustrated because I'm extremely reluctant to type up my Jonas/Nirrti sequel and I don't know why. Subliminal vibe that it sucks, a reluctance to put Jonas through hell again, or sheer laziness? ;)
I would also like to find a good program to make screencaps of DVDs played on my comp. I have a copy of Cypher and I wanna make some caps of David Hewlett's character since I'm pretty sure not many other people have the movie.
Grrr....
Think I'll go back to, uh... admiring Jonas for a while. :D

Well, I've come to join you in the sulking of the forum crashes. :(
Though I have to say, I wonder if today's crash had to do with the internet problems I heard on the news earlier. I don't know what it was, but I guess if effects a lot of sites today.
I guess a positive note on the server crashes, when I can't get to the site, there isn't a huge backup of posts to read. ;)

Oktagone was updating its server or something. Switching everything over to Gantu Linux or whatever it's called. And Gantu (Genoo?) Linux seemed to be having problems today, too, judging by the server logs. Although that could be completely normal. I've never looked at such things before so I've no way of judging what's normal and what isn't in that regard. ;)
The things I'll do to avoid typing up this stupid story... Although I have managed another page or two, at least. :)

Yes, Gateworld can be very distracting can't it? Like I should be working on my homework right now but I told myself that I just need a wee little break to rest my poor weary brain. Now the trick is to keep the break a wee one. Sometimes I take a wee break and then I look up after what seems like 10 minutes and an hour has gone by. If only the subject matter was more interesting. But medical terminology and medical laws and ethics isn't so stimulating.

Out of curiosity, there's a dude around here who started a thread and every time I click on it to read it, or if I click on his profile, I get an MSN login box thingy. It's very irritating. Any idea why it's happening? Something to do with the sig file is my guess. And is adding to my ignore list the only way to make it stop?
Actually, it's probably a moot question as I've vowed to pretty much ignore the dude anyway. But I'm still curious...

Adding it to your ignore list should make it stop. If you're talking about who I think you're talking about I haven't had a problem so I can't be sure exactly what's happening to you but if you put it on ignore than the box shouldn't come up anymore.

Well,I'm just glad to be able to view/post again! :D
I had to focus on RL for 24 hours, and having to do my "Positive Cheery FHB" thing in RL is a lot less fun than GW!
At least here, I can actually get a word in edgeways, and have some breathing space, and fun discussing Stargate SG-1,etc.No such luck with my RL colleagues/friends and RL situations.....*Sigh*I always get stuck with the counselling and advice. No idea why! :(
To sum up: Yesterday sucked! I couldn't access GW,so I had to bite my tongue and mediate, and go round fixing everything, without a fun outlet here.

Ya know, for a week or two now, I've seen a name pop up on the Users List and every time I saw it I thought, "Gee, I should look that word up and see what it means and how I should pronounce it." I've also thought how cool it was that someone spoke Welsh. Today, I realized that the "Hlywd" in "Very Busy Hlywd Exec" actually stands for Hollywood. *hangs head in shame* What does it say about me that I spent that long convinced it was Welsh without once ever taking in the word as a whole? Other than the fact that I obviously know nothing of Welsh. ;)
I think I had another complaint, but I'm too tired to remember it. Blah to the heat which finally arrived today.

The third one isn't out here yet? Are you sure about that? Or do you mean the paperback version? 'Cause I know the fourth book, Something Rotten, is due out in the Fall in the US and UK.
IMO, the third book wasn't as good as the first two. Still lots of good, funny stuff, but I didn't feel that it really moved the plot along. It was... stagnant. From the sound of it, hopefully, the next book will be better and pick up the pace again.
I'm still waiting for that scene in the first book to be played out from the other side. ;)

I hate going to the dentist. I really really do. That cavity wasn't bothering me in the slightest, but everything the dentist did today hurt. The numbing past burned, the first two shots of novocaine hurt and left stabbing prickly feelings in my upper cheek, the drill hurt beyond belief to the point where he had to give me two MORE shots of novocaine, which did no good whatsoever because any time he went near the tooth in question there were stabbing white-hot pains all through my head... *shudder* Meanwhile, my cheek is numb, my lips are numb, even my nostrils are numb, but that one tooth... The actual filling in wasn't too bad, but the cold squirts of water and air hurt and even now that I'm home it's still kinda tingly.
The dentist was very nice. Apologized profusely and I think took pity on me by saying that another couple "tiny spots" could wait to be looked at when I come for my next check-up. My hands were still trembling when I went to sign my receipt.
And then there's the fact that I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled. I had bloody well be completely unconscious for that, let me tell you.
Urg. And Bleah. And a small self-pitying whimper. I need comforting...

Yeah you should try it all...with braces ! Firstly, to get them on the first time, you need to hold still for a few hours with your mouth clamped open. When they're finally on there, squeezing your jaws, its days before you can even manage eating a freaking soup cracker! But thats not all, now, every few months you have to go back, spend another hour in the chair, getting the wires ripped out and having tighter ones installed. Its AGONY!
And don't get me started on the MONEY! ;)
The only good bit is that it only actually hurts for about one week total of every month.

Been there, done that, got the funny spots on my teeth to prove it. ;) And the sad thing is, braces didn't help much, my teeth are all off kilter again... although not as bad as they were.
I also at one point had some kind of metal tongue guard thing clamped into the roof of my mouth to keep me from pushing my tongue against my teeth whenever I swallowed. Hadn't noticed me doing it before, didn't notice me doing it then and don't know if I've stopped doing it since. It was probably just an excuse for more oral torture.

Dentists are probably right up there with IRS workers in popularity aren't they? Luckily I don't have to have my wisdom teeth removed. At least not yet snce they're not near impacted yet. But I long for the good ol' days when I was a child and the dentist would just give my some nitrous oxide instead of those stupid novacaine shots. I find myself faced with a dilemma.
I just found out that one of our regular summer customers (who spends most of his time in Vancouver) knows the guy who owns Bridge. He's even been to tour the Galactica set. He's also a super nice guy and I know that if I asked him, he'd probably at least try to see about snagging me a tour while I'm in Vancouver. The question is: Do I ask? Do I take advantage of that slim connection and play if for all it's worth, or play Ms. Nice and not bother him?
Of course, the related question is, do I really want to? I mean, I don't even like Stargate all that much anymore, so I don't know if I'd get as much out of it as I'm sure others would. There's always Atlantis, which might rekindle my interest, but as of right now I'm not as keen on seeing the sets as I am in meeting certain castmembers. :D
I think I probably won't bother, but it's a nice thought to keep in the back of my head. :)

I guess it depends on how good a friend this person is. Touring the set sounds like a lot of fun. I know a couple of people who've done it and have had a blast. I've just finished reading Darren's part 1 of his visit to the Stargate and Atlantis sets (lucky dog) but he got the deluxe tour. If you're not REALLY excited at the prospect of going, though, then it might not be worth it.
Apparently it's all in who you know. I really need to find some more influential friends. None of the other mommies at the play dates know anyone even remotely connected with a t.v. studio. :D

Technically, I've already toured the set anyway. Back before those power-mad, pompous, money-sucking, over-commercialized, personality-impaired corporate monsters at Creation BANNED all non-Creation sponsored tours, I lucked into one of the set tours in a raffle. That was also back when I loved the show, so it was completely awesome to see everything, even if I did lose an entire role of film (full of set pics) somewhere between Bridge and the hotel. *sigh*
Ideally, I would have liked a tour when Jonas was still around so I could see what changes he made to Daniel's office. I heard about some of the things, but it still would have been nice to see it for myself, and it sounds like they went easier on people 'cause when I went the lady in charge of our group forbid us to touch anything. I don't even know if I touched the stargate. I probably could have gotten away with that since it was really more moving things that they didn't want us to do, but I take commands like that very seriously and if someone says "don't touch anything!" I won't. :(
Anyway, getting to hang out in the props department would probably be much cooler- assuming I was allowed to touch stuff. ;) Props guys tend to be wacky, fun people... from the few I've met. It's always neat to find out HOW they made things and the impossible mix of sometimes boring parts which end up being something incredibly cool.

Bad news: I've probably hacked it beyond use. I need to find some hooks or snaps or something. And someone who can sew.
In addition to getting another piece of my costume, I also got three pieces of mail for other people. NONE of them are even close to my address. Just because we share the same last name does not mean that we all live in the same house! Stupid post office. The problem has actually been getting worse. Not a day goes by, now, that we don't have mail for at least one other person and Friday I had a whole pile of mail for our neighbor up the road (who does NOT share the same last name and has a very different box number). I can deal with snakes, worms, lizards, frogs and slimy things, and I don't mind bugs that are just crawling around, but I have a generally deep abhorrence of things with more than four legs and I don't like them to be ON me unless it's something harmless like a ladybug or an inchworm or something equally small and non-lethal. I don't even mind cockroaches... from a distance. ;) Stinging insetcs and spiders in particular are bad. If SG-1 ever used an insectoid-type alien or something with multiple limbs, I'd probably find it more horrifying than the things they HAVE been giving us (and the bugs in Bane don't count since they were kinda cheesy looking).
Note to the writers: bugs are really icky, but you have to make them look convincing! Check out the byakhee from the Cthulhu mythos. That might be one general idea.

I don't even mind cockroaches... from a distance. ;) From a FAR distance. I have pretty much a phobia of cockroaches. It stems from when I had one of those huge red sewer cockroaches (2-3 inches long and have wings) run between by legs while I was in the shower, then a week later another one run along the wall at eye level (again in the shower). I had just finished rinsing my hair out, opened my eyes and there it was. You hve never seen someone run so fast. Shortly after that, I made us move to another place.
