Nielsen FINALLY agrees to expand definition of T.V.: implications for SciGenre shows

    Full story: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...tion-tv-422795

I wonder how this will effect eco-fi- and genre shows in the future, and how this may have effected shows like SG:U, Caprica, and V, etc et al if it had been introduced earlier?

Not a whole lot. Legal online sources tend to follow similiar trends than what is broadcasted on your television. Stuff like the torrents where science fiction tends to dominate don't count as they are pirated and don't get money for the stations. Ratings are a representation of money after all.

Not soon enough to save Stargate Universe. But then again all the fans that now praise the show. That when it first came out basically wrote it off immediately and said it was the worse thing ever. Didn't really help matters either and came to the realization it was the best stargate a little late.

I think the real problem there was that shows aren't really given time to grow to their potential any more. If the current impatient executives were around then, Star Trek TNG probably wouldn't have made it out of its first or second season. It didn't really hit its stride until the third season. The first half to 2/3 of SGU Season 1 was pretty rough, but by the back half of season 2, it had some momentum, but that was too late.

Thats not true. Story wise TNG may have not been good at first but its ratings were always good even in S1

It's still only going to be measuring Neilsen families. And advertisers will still only want to know about those viewers who watch the commercials that aired during the broadcast event. So not sure if it will have a huge impact. Other than bragging rights (like the Live plus 7 ratings).

In theory it could help the C3+ numbers but as we rarely get to see those numbers it will be hard to prove next fall.

But the article says it only applies to the Nielsen families it already covers for it's regular ratings. So I can't imagine this will make alot of difference. They are looking for the demographics so you can't apply this to everyone and until that happens you still won't get a true picture of who views what and how and when.

As I've read in other places also, it's a move to look good with a flashy headline, but the details of what they are actually doing probably won't mean alot of changes in the ratings.
