Hi everyone.
We were having a discussion in the french thread about SJ and I think it would be nice to move it in here.
I've thought a bit about Sam and Jack these last few days and here's a question for all of you

IMO there was physical attraction between Sam and JAck since the beginning (since their first meeting actually). Then, they got to know each other as team members. But because of regs, there was UST growing and growing...
Now, 8 years after, they can't even think about moving on because of that. Because they'll always wonder what it could have been if they had been able to be together.

So here's my question : if they had been able to "act" on their physical attraction since the beginning (let's forget that regs exist for a while

), do you think they would have been good together ?
Or would they have soon realized that they don't have much in common, then they would have broken up and moved on to something (or someone) else ?

Good question, Florence... I don't think so, actually.

Before you shoot me, though, hear me out!!

I think that being romantically inaccessible to one another helped them develop their friendship. Having "no chance" at a "real" relationship provided a safe place for them to be themselves & get to actually know one another. Do I think they would've gotten together? Definitely. Do I think it would've lasted? Probably not. I think having to focus on something other than their attraction for one another, while frustrating for us (and the whole 9 years wasn't really necessary), definitely helps their relationship in the long run.

(Oh, and by the way, Florence, I have been meaning to head to the French thread & check out the Fellowship of the Bowl, which page does it start on...?)

I think if they had tried to get together at the very beg. it wouldn't have worked. Jack still had his past 'Cold Lazarus' Plus I think he said before he doesn't trust people flat out trust is part of a relationship. Just my opinion

I don't think it would work either. Jack still had too many issues he was dealing with and Sam had a chip on her shoulder. Plus I think over the years they have grown to be friends. They trust each other and enjoy spending time together. I think now they have a strong relationship based on trust and mutual respect for each other.

My 2 cents, there was definetly a physical attraction in the begining, but I don't think either of them would have done something about it... well actually I can see Jack flirting with Sam and she not really interested.

With time it became friendship and love and we see it in S4, S5, S6, far above from anything physical and the love they have for each other comes from the knowledge of who they are, what they've been togehter, knowing the other more than you know yourself and willing to give your life for the other, at this point it would have been perfect for them to be together and stay together.

But I also think that so many years living with the regs, and holding, it would have been awkward for them to start a relationship, S7 and part of S8, so much angst... it would have been difficult.

The always moment was perfect and now Jack heading to Washington and with the possibility of starting a relationship "long distance" or not in the same workspace I think it is to their advantage and the perfect chance again, unless TPTB screwitupagain....

I don't think they would have gotten together at the very beginning. Jack was still in a bad place, following Charlie's death, plus even though they were attracted to each other, they still had to work together. And, straight away, just hooking up? Would have made working together difficult when it didn't work out. I think Sam, at least, is too sensible to jump straight into a relationship with somone she works with. Plus she was still kinda dealing with what happened between her and Jonas (fiance Jonas, not season 6 Jonas

). However, once the friendship had developed, were there no regs, I think they may have gotten together say, end of season 3? She'd have accepted the fishing invite with no hesitations and they'd have gotten together at the cabin

. Ok, so I kinda twisted what you actually asked there. So, if they had gotten together season 1, I have to say I don't think it'd have worked. However, they'd have still had to work together after that, so that might have given a chance for a friendship to develop properly between them (once the awkwardness was gotten over), and deeper feelings would have developed, and they'd have gotten together and stayed together after a couple of years

Well, I'm happy to find people who think the same way as me. When I posted my question, I was wondering if people woud send me rotten tomatoes or flamed penguins

I too think that they wouldn't have lasted long together if they had been able to get together right from the beginning. They didn't have much in common at that time. I can't picture Sam spending a lot of time in Jack's cabin in the woods, without some theory to work on or some alien artifact to analyze

And I can't see Jack listening to Sam speaking her technobabble for endless hours.
My friend Lys (who's a non shipper) reminded me that they had one thing in common though : astronomy. Jack spends hours looking at stars and Sam spends hours studying stars. But I still think that at one time Jack would tell Sam to shut up and just look at the stars (like in Hundred Days)

But now, after 8 years learning to know each other, they have more things that bring them closer : everything they had to face, their friendship and trust in each other. And they probably want to settle themselves, have a quieter life, at least for Jack. Not too quiet though ! Cause we all know what Sam thinks about a quiet country life, taking care of horses for instance

There's one more thing to consider : we know how TPTB are thinking

They can't have characters living a happy life. If some character is perfectly happy, there's no story. They have to face difficulties cause it means angst and more stories to tell

So if Sam and Jack had been together from the beginning, they couldn't have lived happily forever. There would have been arguments and fights. Well, making-up scenes would have been nice to see though

But that's not something I want to see (arguments, not making up scenes

)
So do you think we should thank TPTB to not have put Sam and Jack together before ?

Definitely! I wouldn't have wanted them together straight away, as then it's much more liable to go wrong, plus then you don't have the build up, the angst! You can't get involved in their story, if you've not been watching and waiting for it to happen. But yes, a few years ago would have been perfect!
