Ridley Scott Brings Sci-Fi To Revamped Cinemax
Original television series are coming to Cinemax, and HBO is sparing no expense to make sure it gets it right.
Ridley Scott is joining forces with veteran television producer Simon Mirren to create "The Sector," a remake of the science-fiction classic that originally focused on a future cop who hunts down rogue androids that try to slip back to Earth, according to The New York Post.
It's the third series ordered for Cinemax, following "The Transporter" and "Strike Back," and is an effort to make the premium cable channel -- which first premiered in 1980 -- relevant again, especially in a day when many premium cable channels are producing their own series.
"The Sector" will be a bit darker than what many sci-fi fans might remember. The main character is not a cop, but instead the commander of a paramilitary unit who is not looking for androids, but instead a "new race of genetically enhanced humans," according to the newspaper. Mirren -- the nephew of actress Helen Mirren -- is best known for his work on "Criminal Minds."
There is no further information on when the series might go into production or when it will take the air on Cinemax, but the Post believes it could actually be ready by fall (but that's highly doubtful).
HBO, which owns Cinemax, is serious about competing with the likes of Showtime and Starz, the latter making waves with its Spartacus series, as well as its gamble on the "Doctor Who" spinoff "Torchwood."
Scott, of course, is known for his work in film classics such as "Blade Runner" and "Alien." For Mirren, however, this is his first genre project. He got his start as a writer for the popular British series "Waking the Dead," and later made a name for himself as a producer for American shows such as "Without a Trace," "Third Watch" and "Criminal Minds."
