Great work! There was actually a sconce similar to your design sold today on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Stargate-Atlantis-Wall-Light-Chicklet-/150553398052?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item230dae8b24). I won a coffee mug from the SG1 set today from the same company.

How did you make the crystals?

How did you make the crystals?

They look like pieces of acrylic...

jessec
February 1st, 2011, 06:57 PM
Yup the crystals are made from a 1/2 inch thick "Acrylic Plexiglass Sheet".

if you have exact specifications - you can get a local glass shop cut the shapes.

yup these are made from 1/2 inch thick "ACRYLIC PLEXIGLASS SHEET"

if you 've the correct dimensions you can get them cut just like the originals - i had mine cut from a local glass store...

Full height is 4 Feet Tall.
Final version will be designed so 2 can be put together to make total of 8 feet.

I will have to go to a store to get them cut if I do it, last time I tried to cut glass it was reinforced safety glass and spent 30 min cleaning up the little pieces.

Acrylic doesn't shatter like glass.. it can be cut on a tablesaw.. if you have a blade for cutting acrylic :p I've used acrylic in a few models.. sometimes I cut it myself on a tablesaw and other times with a laser cutter :D

Have to look and see if we have a blade. Might be fun to make if I have time.

jessec
February 2nd, 2011, 06:16 PM
True Guys - it can be cut with the right blade, i have cut it before on a table saw but that one was 1/8 thick. the one i used is 1/2 inch thick, i did manage to cut a square but cutting the shape was a different story - thats when i called the store.

I am also working on a smaller model of the same light, this time i am going to have the shop cut the crystals including buying the Acrylic from them lets see how much it will cost..
will update you guys if i manage to get this done soon . .

Hmmm, I might do this soon. My uncle builds cabinets and display cases and stuff for a living from hand and he will probably have a saw that can cut the crystals.

It would be cool if you could put up a step-by-step guide to how to make them, unless you plan on making them and selling them somewhere.

I really would like to know what kind of paint and which colors you used to make it look aged/metaly.

Interesting. However, at least to me, your starting price seems a bit high (especially with your rather-high shipping price).

I've been selling stuff for a while on eBay, and from my experience, I know that a high starting price can mean an unsuccessful auction. :(

padr49904
February 8th, 2011, 06:58 PM
If you start it low then there is a higher chance of it getting that high, people will say to themselves "just a little higher and its only a couple more dollars" and they will bid it up really high if they think they have a chance of getting it low. I have been in some really hectic bid wars before and this is what I hope for but never get, I always end up paying like 30 more than I intended.

I shipped an 8feet light before it cost me $137 to ship it - this one they said it will be around 30 when time comes who knows.

I have Close to $90 in Crystals Alone - Not including The 3 weeks of wood work, paint and so on....

however the light is already sold :) a local fellow gate fan picked it up .

hehe glad you liked it

i didn't build that one for myself. I just built it to gain some understanding as how to build it - because later this year we will be building a new home - Where i plan to put a 30X20 or 30X35 movie theater based after atlantis design.

I am working on one more smaller piece in which i hope to include touch-less turn on off switch (wave your hand to turn on Switch just like SGA)

nice - i 've been thinking about doing a puddle jumper but its eluded me, i heard making stuff with card is easy - you can layer it afterwards but i never tried....

what size thickness styrene did u use to create the jumper.? i relle love how nice it came out.. & it looks ver accurate great skill you ve...

i sculpted a stunner as well - its still in the works :)
hopefully once its casted - ll somehow inject a light in there somewhere.

The helmet is further along now.. I'll take some photos of it over the weekend. Almost done making the basic shape.. then I have to cut all the detail into the surface :S It's getting very heavy now :S The Puddle Jumper is white because of the layer of paper which has my Puddle Jumper blueprints printed on it :p

omg ! grr thats a lot of work -- i tried to make them myself printing different shots cutting them & sticking them onto one sheet and making a copy of that sheet it didn't turn out good @ the time But i think i was impatient @ the time.. but i think now there are a lot more images available of the P- Jumper so it will be easy to do i will attempt it one more time but if you can find the BluPrints that would be awesome.

: how is working with cardboard to create the ship coming along.?

i think i am going to start on the jumper in a few days but need to have it on paper before i begin good planning always helps execute i never scratch built a ship so it should be fun ... learning .

^ Three of the images I made while working out the design of the Puddle Jumper.. But they're not perfect.. some parts are even wrong  I used them as a guide while making the jumper.. and modified the model as I was going... I have the detail over the sides and the top saved in another image.. but that one needs work.. :S I never intended to share the designs.. just to use them once to build the model :D

Well done mate. I recently worked on a short film that was set in space and we wanted some cool columns with lights integrated for the background but one of the production designers pulled out last minute and they had alllllllll of the stuff to do that so we were left with no cool touches like what you've made there. Could of used you there.

Big Thanks Mate !

LOL LOL - true i am sure you dont want , I to make a jumper better than urs ;) i think i will be happy if i can achieve half as good as your ship .

I found some interesting -maybe you have seen this is the past.
(take a look) (http://www.paperaviation.de/PuddleJumper/puddlejumper.html)
-This is a 2338 × 3367 - layout but i think if you are willing to mess around you could use the print out of this as blue-prints for creating a ship . .

Also they are selling the original Blueprints of puddle jumper (http://stargateartifacts.com/2011/04/06/puddle-jumper-blueprints-for-sale/) from the show but i cannot seem to locate the auction.

p.s i started to build the ship but its been on hold, doing it right is just too much work .... will take a while i think .

Will post some erly production photos hopefully soon.

August 28th, 2011, 11:58 AM
I Worked on this for approx 3 weekends and approx 2 hrs 3 days a week.

Cost is hard to say as i didn't keep track of everything but i will take a guess:

1. MDF Sheet Approx - $40
2. Paint - $16.00
3. Glue - $6.00
4. Lights - $30.00
5. Crystals - $35 each (including cutting and ACRYLIC) This is the most expensive component.
(i believe you can maybe find something else that is cheaper to use instead of ACRYLIC).

Cool but what was the cost of it all? and how many hours did it take u to build?

Hi guys. I am kinda new here. My son is a big fan of SGA and his birthday is coming up soon. I was wondering if I could get some specs on sizes of the parts that make this light so I could make one or two for him. Anyhting like that and/or instructions would be helpful. Thanks a lot if you can help.

I'm new to the thread but I have to say, it doesn't look bad; in fact it fits the decor of your house quite nicely. You have some serious talent, perhaps you could redecorate a room in to make it look like one from Atlantis? Just a thought...
