After a jaunt on Thor's ship, we find ourselves back here again, Jack talking about actual fishing (although one has to wonder... does the other kind of fishing linger in the back of his mind... he has that look...). There's an unguarded aspect to his face, I think he even looks hopeful...

Sam has just asked him if he considered the possibility that they were Zatarcs - this panic in his eyes... *Sam* of all people is the one to view it. He's guarded with everyone else, but he allows her to see what's going on in his mind.

You'll see a lot from D&C as this is a S/J heavy episode and so much happens in their expressions alone.

Like a hero walking to his death for sake of his lady. Some may take umbrage that it seems macho to do such a thing, but Jack has always been a man of action. Sam is the thinker and in a way, an artist (as McKay will tell her) - and he thinks, there will always be grunt workers, but brilliance is a true gift. And as we are about to find out, he'd rather die than live without her - and here we see him quite ready to fulfill that wish.

I read a lot of fanfic where Jack blames Sam for wanting to "keep it in the room" - but as I study his expression throughout this scene I get a distinct feeling that Jack wants it there as well. It seems to me that he was enjoying the comfortable, playful relationship and he doesn't want this new layer - he doesn't want her to mean as much as she does to him. He doesn't want to ever hurt like he'd hurt before.

In late November, RepliCartertje will post an invitation to all those who want to participate in Secret Santa. She'll ask them to submit their names to her, and let her know what they would like to make for others (i.e., poem, art, vid, fic). She'll then ask what they would like to receive...and a couple of questions about fave eps, moments, etc.

She then matches people up with a Secret Santa and sends them their assignments, and a due date for them to be complete.

It's always fun, and Eve is so sweet to take responsibility for organizing the event each year.

I love this Jack look. I think of all of them this has to be among my favorites. In his eyes he looks sweet on Sam. And yet there's angst as he knows this is as close as he'll get. When Sam comes and flirts with her "So what am I going to say" and he inadvertently shoots her down, he's so quick to find that way to boost her back up again. "I knew you were going to say that..." and his reward (he is trained well...)

I can hardly keep up with that Thread, it's amazing how fast its going.
So I'm not sure if that has been shared or recommended by anyone before, but I thought it's just so beautiful to listen to.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to play the piano myself, otherwise I would have tried to play it myself.

The proverbial cat that ate the canary. From the resignation, frustration to a brief moment when Jack takes the chance to realize everything he wants - and he finds out that Sam wants him too. I've always felt bad that on some level he has the security of knowing what she feels while later, she struggles with trying to figure him out.

I'm also struck by seems to me to be pure adoration. The way a lover looks at his beloved. There's a peace in his eyes, a satisfaction, something rare and that we won't see again for a very long time.

Sam may be smiling here, but it takes her a while to warm up to Jack again. She keeps her distance, physically and otherwise, for the next few episodes.

I noticed in the screencaptures that usually it's Daniel acting as a buffer between Sam and Jack for the next few episodes... It's not until this moment in Crystal Skull (when Daniel goes missing again) that we catch Sam standing near Jack once more:

This one is from when he is ordering Sam to turn the naquadah generator into a bomb. This is the first time they have really, truly come into conflict. Sam's had moments before (notably refusing to leave and choosing to help deal with Jonas), but here, she knows he's playing fast and loose with Hammond's orders. In Jack's eyes he studying her again - a look we haven't seen since last season. How far will she follow me? - he seems to ask himself. And ultimately she does what he requests... but I think Sam's expression is incredibly telling as well:

I have to wonder if on some level Jack enjoyed the life they lived there. He's a man who works with his hands and he had the company of a woman that meant the world to him. There's a pleasure in Jack's eyes as he talks with Sam here. If you've been following this progression, you can see how much he's changed in the way he watches her from the first few seasons. The first two there were a lot of friendly, "innocent" looks - and then we have "Nemesis" and now - his looks hold so much more weight. He *knows* how he feels about her and it colors the way he interacts with her. And as we'll see, it affects how he makes decisions about her.

So many of Jack's expressions can be picked up from his body language alone. I've picked a lot of caps where you can't see his face dead on and this is one where I *wish* we could. Sam's smile and her eyes speak to what she's reflecting from him. I think it's true that a woman's confidence is deeply affected by her lover. It's what I find insane about their relationship - they're *not* lovers but their body language screams that they should be.

Sam gets to impress Jack by blowing up a sun! It now reminds me of GeekSam in Moebius answering the question of 'had she ever fired a weapon' by responding with something along the lines of 'does launching a rocket count?' Where does blowing up a sun fit in? lol

Like the determined look from "Upgrades" this one has that fury that hints at Jack's sordid past. I imagine that had the entity not been in Sam's body he would have ripped its throat (if it had one) with his bare hands. As much as they pretend they left it in the room, as we see in this, and in the next few, it is very much not in the room. Jenn's pointed this out and I agree - the entity knew that Sam was important to Jack. Too important.

Another favorite. His brown eyes are overflowing with fear as he looks at Sam's limp body. I can only imagine the unconscious terror - he lived through horror with Charlie - dead by his own weapon and now he looks at Sam, dead by his own hand. Doubt haunts him - he barely survived his son's death, is there any way he could survive hers?

I love the mixture of concern and relief as he finally has Sam in hand. It's interesting to note - but you'll see that when she's looking at him in a lot of these photos there's a non-chalant attitude or guarded expressions - his rawest emotions are saved for those times when he thinks she isn't looking.

Again, when Sam isn't looking, it's as though Jack is taking as much of her in as he can, studying her, listening to her intently. He tries to play casual when her eyes are on him... but his heart hasn't changed. Instead he's lost the playful "what if" of Season 4 and now feels the very serious consequences of his feelings.

Another Jack not looking at the camera shot. As Pol has talked about - they mirror each other quite frequently which is why I pull some of these shots and label them Jack. They reflect each other so well that you don't need a straight on of Jack when you have one of Sam - they're on the same wavelength - even when they're standing side by side:

These expressions where Jack is studying Sam intently become fewer and fewer - this time it's in response to her using the healing device on Daniel after he'd been exposed to a lethal dose of radiation. The only difference between this time and the time with Seth is that there's no fear here, just concern and a tactical wonder. His expression quickly changes however:

As Jack heads up to carry the gate past Earth's atmosphere, him and Sam have a conversation where she wishes she could go with him and then wishes him luck. His face is just a hint of the kind of concern he'll express when Sam begins to cry in "Heroes" - he knows she's worried and I think there's side of him that's baffled by this and yet is tied to her because he doesn't want to hurt her.

What you don't see is Jack's hand telling Carter to set the timer for three minutes instead of five so that they can trap Fifth. Take the time to note that there is no question or doubt in his eyes that Sam will follow his order, he trusts her completely - even when he knows he's giving her an order that violates her own principles. Remember the last time? When we had him ordering her to turn the naquadah generator into a bomb? His eyes held question to see how far she would go... he knows that now and he is unwavering in his belief in her. And from what I see in his eyes, he knows what he is asking her to do and he hates it.

I sense that he not only is worried about what he has done to her but he knows he has showed to her a side of himself that he works very hard to cover up with humor. This is technically Sam's hallucination, but I felt it worth posting because it is Jack's expression from HER point of view. Unlike what we've seen, notice how neutral his eyes are. They're friendly but they lack the depth that the real Jack often has. It's so beautifully nuanced as Sam sits there and questions his feelings. She doesn't know and therefore can't put the corresponding emotion in his eyes.

I find it interesting that from the moment Sam gets in the elevator Jack attempts to maintain a neutral expression and look everywhere except at her. Normally he takes advantage of these moments. I suspect that given his emotional reaction in "Grace" he's been slapped on the wrist so to speak. He's been forced to face the fact that the emotions he suffered from three years ago are still as deep as ever... of course... as the elevator goes we see that forced distance through their conversation about Sam's humming...

His eyes speak volumes about how he sees Sam. At the beginning he saw her as young, vibrant, fun, and he flirted. Then they were filled with hope, longing... and the longing hasn't left, but now there's an understanding. Through each ordeal that Sam suffers she takes one step closer to the jaded reality the Jack lives in... and I think he feels helpless to change it, but here, *here* there's something in his eyes where it dawns on him that if Sam lost him, it might mean just as much agony for her as losing her would do to him.

Where have we seen this expression before? Here's a hint, we haven't seen it in a very, very long time. He's studying her again. For the last few years he's *known* her, he's known how she felt, but then she dated Pete and then she got engaged and everything he thought he knew was turned upside down. Then Sam shows up in his yard and starts talking about mistakes. We often get caught up in the fact that he's concerned about Kerry inside, but his face tells a secondary story - he's relearning Sam. What he thought he knew, he doesn't.

We often assume that he must have said something in order to tip Kerry off, but if she's astute (which I think she is, perhaps the writers were compensating for Pete's lack) - she had to have seen that he didn't waver in his attention. Sam is on her phone at this point. Kerry is looking at him, but he keeps half an eye on Sam. We often assume that he must have said something in order to tip Kerry off, but if she's astute (which I think she is, perhaps the writers were compensating for Pete's lack) - she had to have seen that he didn't waver in his attention. In fact as Sam walks away:

I think a small, tiny glimmer is coming back to life in his mind as it pertains to Sam. Personally I think his relationship with Kerry was an attempt to deal with the fact that he thought he'd lost Sam... but now... he's drawn to her even when he's in the presence of a pretty great woman.

I find that scene rather tragic. What if Kerry was not there? Would Sam have been able to convey her most inner feeling to Jack. She did sit in her car for a while contemplating on what to do and say. Jack sensed the lost opportunity. And Kerry could see she had no place in their world.

The cake pics and the hearts on the dry erase side are meant to look like they are magnets and the little thing with the word sweet is just some trinket I image Sam would get for Jack since it has one of his favorite words on.

Sam is not amused with the Colonel’s admiration for her in “the dress” (or the use of her full name “Samantha”). She believes it’s yet another sign that he still doubts her abilities. But no matter how much she may want his approval and respect, she is determined to stand up and challenge him to do what is right because she doesn’t yet trust him to do the same.
