With Kiva shot and unconscious, that other LA member assumed command right away. I'm not sure what happened there but why did he decide to kill all the military? Is he following Kiva's original order to kill everyone if she is shot dead? or was the order to kill everyone if merely an attempt is made to shoot her dead?

No idea, but seeing how the Varro character is being developed, my bet is that he comes in the season two premiere and saves everyone.

Agreed. Varro seems to be far more even-headed than everyone at this point. Granted, at this point in the story (and despite his being shot) everything has worked out for his side so far. There hasn't been much to make him unhinged.

And I don't get the feeling Kiva inspires a tremendous amount of loyalty from him. Probably just fear.

Yeah... he seemed a bit more even-keeled. And for him, the whole Destiny thing seemed a bit more 'faith-based', for lack of a better term. I don't think he'll out 'n' out save everyone, but I get the feeling he's going to be a turncoat of some kind. I feel like his contribution will be more of a lack of action (i.e. ignoring something on a console, letting people get away, etc) than a full-out switching of sides. But that's all speculation, of course.... :)

OH!! This reminds me of something I noticed in Subversion but couldn't make heads or tales of..... remember when Kiva is torturing Rush/Telford and Varro peaks in? His face takes on a look of disapproval, it seems to me, and then he ducks out again. Maybe Varro is less cold-blooded than he seems? Maybe his "I'll have to kill you myself" remark in "Subversion" was just to maintain appearances??

He believes that Young's man shot Kiva so he wants revenge

Good observation with Varro in Subversion. It was mentioned in the threads after that episode. But, Varro did tell TJ that "Destiny doesn't belong to us". Remember, that is what Telford said to Young & O'Neall. So, is Varro brainwashed but on the other hand you get the feeling he is not so hard core as Kevi and the bald guy.

My guess is season 2 will start out with those LA guys about to shoot Young and all(well not all because apparently a third of the military crew have vanished since there were only about 6 people we've never seen before with Young) the military personel and at the last minute Varro walks in and stops them.

What I don't get is according to Kiva, Varro is her second in command... So why is Baldy suddenly acting like he's in charge now? I mean Varro may be injured but he can still make decisions and fight. Shouldn't the decision to kill over half the crew go to him rather than Baldy?

I think LA command structure may have a bit of Alpha-male to it. I think Varro is the second in command, but when baldy knew that Varro was awake, he certainly didn't offer to relinquish it.

I do think he immediately took command because Kiva was dead and he was the highest ranking person in his vicinity.

Yeah if Baldy and Varro get into an alpha-male battle I'm pretty sure Varro is going to win that fight.

My guess is that "Baldy" had an Al Haig moment....

The actor playing Varro (Mike Dopud) originally also played Odai Ventrell in the SG-1 episode 'Bounty' - in that ep he was convinced to go back to the lucian alliance and kill keevan, is it possible that he went underciver in the LA as a spy for Earth under the assumed name Varro?

Dum, dum, dum... im just saying...

He just killed a marine, so I'm going to say no.

Only if we also assume that Nyan got eaten by a Wraith.

Because the last he saw of varro he was being worked on by the doctor... ergo in his mind he is out of commission.

I'm totally on the Varro fan wagon. lol... And I really dig Cos too. It certainly looks as though Varro is going to get a handle on things. Bummed that Kiva might be dead but if she didn't go down I guess it would be an eternal stalemate over control of the ship. Blech...

As it stands, I think the only thing that will put Young back in control is TJ's obvious influence over Varro. I think it will tip the balance, anyway.

I may be way off, but I was under the impression that the bald guy was in a separate area from where TJ was working on the injured and may not have know that Varro was up and about. If that isn't the case then the whole alpha male thing makes sense too. Either way, Varro will put a stop to the execution.

Bald guy knew full well that Varro was up when he basically ignored his radio call.

I think Baldy is being written as a foil for the others, which is why he is such a trigger happy jerk. Kiva may have been ruthless but she was obviously smart and focussed. Baldy is the kind of guy who thinks that all problems can be solved by threatening to shoot or actually killing people until the universe starts making sense to him. You know, the kind of guy who would shoot a mob doctor operating on a bad guy if surgery started to go badly, not thinking ahead to the fact that if you shoot the doctor there is NO WAY the patient is going to survive. Or the kind of guy who would be in a crowd shouting, acting out of fear.

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering. He's a dark side jerk.

Yep. Kiva did give the order for the hostages to be executed if something happened to her and that's what Baldy is going to do. It really won't surprise me if Varro steps in and prevents it.
