help....need to find a movie

Was drifting through channels on the tv a couple of months back and watched a movie for barely 15 mins. In it a group of people were finding some ancient alien device buried underground and when they tampered with it...it activated itself and sent out a beam into the sky which caused thunderstoarms.

anyone know the name of the movie ? had a stargatey feel to it.

was it older, newer? Wasnt one of the highlander movies was it?
