View Full Version : Did the ancients co-exist with the dinosaurs?

Ok probably not... but they were close! We know the ancients colonized earth about 50 million years ago (http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Before_19th_Century) and we know that the mass extinction event was approximately 66.4 million years ago. (http://atropos.as.arizona.edu/aiz/teaching/a204/images/animal_timeline.gif)
This was enough to get me thinking... that earth was vastly different when the ancients arrived then what we know of it now.

There is a good 15 million year difference between the Anicents coming to Earth and the Dinoaurs being wiped out. It's also been shown that Dakara was the first landing site of the Ancients in the Milky Way (according the Ark of Truth) so even if they came to this galaxy before the Dinosaurs were wiped out, they could have been in a completely different part of the galaxy.
I'd also think the Ancients would have been able to stop the asteroid in the first place, so I doubt they were around.

If you give me a hint of a good reason to why the heck they would do that, I believe you.

it should be easily conceivable that the ancients may have killed the dinosaurs to let humans thrive.

Well if you were an ancient on Earth all those years ago, those pesky man eating dinosaurs would sure ruin the beautiful evening sunset strolls. Only thing to do would be to get rid of the buggas.

Also modern humans have only been around for 50-100,000 years. If you count the earliest hominins that's still only 5-7 million years ago. I don't think they thought so far ahead, not then.

that just shows that the ancients laid the seeds of out speices before they left for pegasus. as we found out later on, with the dakara device, they reseeded the galaxy and then left, which would indicate their is a possibility the ancients created the ancestors of the goa'uld.
in any case they may have been here with the dinosaurs, but if a meteor did hit the earth, and all evidence says it did, they would have died, or at least abandoned earth after it, so they would have come after.
also they would have just shot the metoer before it hit earth anyway

honestly i dont think that the ancients would just wipe the dinosuars just so that the human race can live besides the ancients shields would prevent anything from coming into their cities especially flesh eating testosterone big fat animals to kill them

No, they couldn't have co-existed with the Dinos, unless you count birds. That said, perhaps SGU will explain one thing to me: why did the Ancients consider Earth so important. After all, its where they built Atlantis, and launched Destiny from. What's so special about Earth? (hope not to hijack the thread just had to give my two cents.)

Oldest gates on earth about 50 million years old, Destiny predates that. So when did they come to earth?
Mike.
April 16th, 2010, 08:35 AM
Before then, when MW still had SGU style gates (that were later replaced).

Oh who knows... could be a plethora of reasons
1) Maybe it was just a random planet that they happened to colonize / thrive on. For instance one could ask why people live in the particular cities that they do now. Just random chance of colonization
2) Earth could've had all the characteristics they required. We already know life was evolving on earth prior the the ancients arrival. Maybe that means that Earth had particular resorces particular the the ancients requirements.

I don't think the timings would have worked out for the Ancients and Dinosaurs to co-exist together.
If the Ancients were going to wipe out any dinosaurs to keep their human settlements safe then they'd only need to get rid of the Carnivores and Omnivores, the herbivores should still be around (in the Stargate universe anyway).
TBH I doubt the Ancients would have placed human life on Earth if the Dinosaurs were around when they came, or maybe they would've just put them in isolated areas away from any predatory species, which still doesn't show a reason why the Ancients would wipe out an entire species of Animals just to place their own on this world.
As far as Mr.Xcelent's question goes, when was it said that Destiny predates the Stargates on Earth?

Even if the dinosaurs where extinct then there were lost of different predatory mammals and birds around millions of years ago things like Hyenadon and Terror Birds to name but a few.
Mike.

Wiping out all the carnivores and omnivores wouldn't work, it would cause massive damage to the ecosystems. Without anything to keep them in check the herbivores would multiply, destroy the flora and die themselves after running out of food. It's safe to say that the Ancients arrived after the mass extinction 65 million years ago. There was no need for them to eliminate the dinosaurs. Even one million would change the environment beyond recognition.:)
Why Earth is so important to them: since Earth was (probably) the first planet they colonized in the MW they spent a lot of energy improving it. And left quite a lot of their own genetic material around, like the ATA gene.
As far as Mr.Xcelent's question goes, when was it said that Destiny predates the Stargates on Earth?
I remember J Mallozzi and RC Cooper talking about how Destiny is a lot older than Atlantis, its gate is "the oldest" - a prototype, and how SGU style gates are based on older more limited tech. I could look for the quotes/vids, but this has been discussed to death. :P

It just seems logical. The Ancients sent seeder ships throughout the known universe. MW and PG were the first galaxies they settled (after splitting from the Ori) and they probably were the first ones to receive gates. Old ones, SGU style as these were the first kind invented. As time passed the Ancients perfected the technology and replaced the existing network with the MW or PG models.
Also - Destiny was originally launched from Earth - with an old SGU style gate. Logically SGU gates were present in MW because at that time they had nothing better.
It makes sense. :)
 but that's Jesus...Where's an Ancient riding a dino?
Think about it - Jesus could have been an Ancient. :P
- healing powers - check
- knowledge and understanding - check
- matter-energy manipulation - check
- information from the future aka time travel - check
- we know the Ancients are not above inventing a religion if they think is for the greater good (see SGA S01 E06: Childhood's End) - check

Well dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago. Oldest gates are 50ish million years old. Its possible the Ancients arrived somewhere in that 15 million year gap.
Atlantis was at least around till a maximum of 34 million years ago, Antarctica wasn't frozen until then and it was in Rising when Atlantis left.

- Guys, it's freezing here. Can't we do something about this planet? Hey Frank, what about a giant heater and a ZPM?
- No need for that, John. There's like a big rock headed for this place. Just wait.
