    Stargate and Teleportation

Can someone explain to me the rules, and science of, teleportation in the stargate universe? Not the show... but the series as a whole. How far could one teleport?

Yes. I prefer to call it teleportation. But yes, Asgard beaming.

Beaming is a plot device, and limitations of a plot device are dictated by the requirements of the plot.

In terms of explanations given in the show the limitations on range are due to power requirements and inability to lock. One must be able to "scan" the area and establish "lock" to beam something in/out. So naturally, certain types of shielding, massive power emission, and great distance will prevent you from beaming.

Since nobody here really understands how something like the Asgard beam can work in the real world, trying to guess limitations from real physics is not easy.

Well the Stargate is essentially a teleporter, it can shoot you across the universe with enough power. The rings are the same as the stargate without the use of wormholes to send you trough and have been used mostly from orbital distances and maybe once by the Ori between solar systems.

The asgard beaming is like the above ones that it dematerializes and reintegrates you at the target site. It can beam an army of jaffa and three piramides the size of Giza in second (Thor's chariot) and the Prometheus beamed a office building laced with naquadah to orbit in the same time it would take to beam a person or smaller object. Then there are the claims that the asgard can beam from their galaxy to ours that I'm inclined to believe.

Within the show, it's not been explained how far you can teleport. The technology seems to be a more advanced version of the Wraith culling beam. While the Wraith require close proximity to grab you, the Asgard can do it from orbit, and while you're underground. Plus at close range, it can grab armies and take part buildings (namely Goa'uld landing platforms).

Use a relay platform, it's possible to transport people from various parts of the planet to another automatically, and even through the Stargate (but it's only Ancients we've seen doing this) but the Wraith use the same technology to travel inside ships and facilities.

Other than that, the science behind what really happens hasn't been explained, unlike Star Trek which has your molecules scattered and then put back together.

Huh, interesting. It's nice to know the limitations.
