Ask Matt
by Matt Roush
Question:
I woke up this morning (Dec. 15) and read some TV news about Ben Browder getting signed as a regular cast member on Stargate SG-1 for Season 9. I know there are probably a lot of Scapers out there who think this is a sacrilegious turn of events. I'm a huge fan of both Farscape and Stargate and I personally think this is a great move. SG-1 could use a shot in the arm with Richard Dean Anderson playing such a limited role and this just might be it. I was wondering, what is your take on this turn of events? Also, do you know of any more details on who his character might be? — Keith
Matt:
Can't tell you much yet about his character, but then I'd never exactly call myself a Stargate buff. I started watching the show again a bit last summer when the Atlantis spin-off was launched, and from what I can tell, the show could use Browder's presence, especially if they can create a character for him who's half as entertaining as Crichton was. Sounds like a win-win to me. This casting certainly guarantees I'll be watching. (Farscape fans probably already know that Claudia Black appears in one of the first episodes in Stargate's winter season, starting later this month, and has been set to appear in at least five episodes next season, making it a sort of Farscape reunion. What fun.) As for another Browder fan named Kerry, who wrote to ask "Is [Browder] that hard up for work?... I would think he now risks being typecast as the 'sci-fi' guy," all I can say is there are probably worse fates. He could have been cast in a turkey like Hawaii.
