Here is a spankin' new shipper thread!

[Mod edit -The rest of the thread has gone into the S/J Shipper Archive http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=2419

This thread is for positive discussion of S/J. (And also cookies, penguins, jello and stuff. But mainly S/J.) Anyone wanting more serious S/J discussion (where S/J is the only topic) should check out the Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill Ship Discussion Thread - http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=10397

Let the ship discussions begin!!!

Hi S/J Shippers .:)

This thread will be merged into the original Sam Carter/Jack O'Neill Appreciation Thread here (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=8580) once ( and if ) Greg is able to trace the problem that's caused the disappearance of posts and pageloads of graphics very recently.

The original thread is "Stickied" for ease for the moment ,to enable you to copy/paste your conversations and links over here.

Many thanks for your patience .:)

/feels better now.

What I wrote on the Discussion thread while this thread was away, in response to Pol's comment about Ripple effect:

I was going to respond to Pol's comment about Sam's "I've got nuthin'...yet" from Ripple Effect as being a Jackism and proof they were together. Because more than the simple verbage, the sense of hope and the confidence that, despite having not a clue at that minute, Sam maintains faith in herself and seems pretty confident she *will* - which is something, I think, she's learned from Jack. That's really channeling her inner Jack - that sense of confidence in herself and her ability.

*happy sigh*

EDIT: And not only are we the longest Thread, we've officially become the Thread at the end of the Universe (the Gateworld Universe, that is)

!!! Secret Santa !!!

The deadline for Secret Santa was on the 11th of December. I know I gave you another day but I haven't heard from some of you. So can you please e-mail me back today. If I don't hear from you at all I will assume that you can't make it or decided to just not make anything. And I'll have to ask one of the back-up people to make something. I really hope I don't have to do that.

If you haven't gotten a e-mail from me asking you about Secret Santa, it means I received yours.

I only need to receive it from: m_wendy_r, NeverOnEarth, Nanjana, Sg-1fanintn, Vandola, Jess, TrueRomantic.
From most of you I got a form of communication and also when you will finish it. For some of you I don't...If I don't please contact me today, please.

If everything goes acording to plan. I will be sending the gifts out on Monday, or maybe Tuesday. So for people who have something on youtube on private. You can set them to not private on Monday.

Funny gutter story from college:

One of our friends was an RA and had apparently ended up on the end of a TMI story from another RA - her boyfriend had apparently broken the headboard at the hotel when they were... y'know... reeling in... and so for the next two years instead of the expression "whatever floats your boat" we'd say "whatever breaks your headboard"

Hmm well.

In a hotel we once stayed in the headboard was screwed to the wall and later on so was I (:o ). The consequence was that, somewhere in all the *cough* excitement, we managed to pull it off the wall. It made a helluva noise as it crashed to the floor.

That's nothing though. And ex and I broke an entire bed once... oh dear! :D

I don't know, the angst is pretty heavy - might have weighed down the thread and it just couldn't bounce back.Tis True. In fact, I was just watching Trio and thinking that, considering the three ships I believe are 'canon' from SG1 and SGA (as in, created deliberately by TPTB and not simply fan-derived), each sort of 'favors' a different pillar of ship. I think Sam/Jack are the 'angst' couple. Really.

OT Tater Tot Hotdish:

apparently that dish is NOT a low-fat dish.....so I'm trying to find ways of lightening up the recipe...some of them simple....like using the 98% fat-free versions of the cans of condensed creamy soup...and others are probably sacreligious (sp?) to any Midwesterner....this one substituting those shredded hash brown thingies (which don't come already fried) for the tater tots.....so this version would not be an authentic Midwestern dish at all....but for people trying to watch what they eat (like me...:P) these are necessary substitutions....but these substitutions might make Catholic Minnesotans cross themselves with a Hail Mary.....:P:D

but in its original form I can see why it would keep people in the upper midwest warm......it's looks like a good dish if you need to build up warmth-retaining fat cells for the winter....:P:D

We eat atrociously in the midwest, probably for that very reason. Plus we probably burn off a million calories just to keep from freezing on the way out to the garage in the morning. We do, however, breathe actual oxygen, so it's probably a pretty fair trade off.

However, the WORST food by far health-wise is Southern cooking. We fry everything. Pickles (yum!), okra, cheese, chicken, steak... heck twinkies too LOL I love going to the state fair up here b/c it's the only time I get a taste of my down south food :D

OT TT HDExactly. We eat atrociously in the midwest, probably for that very reason. Plus we probably burn off a million calories just to keep from freezing on the way out to the garage in the morning. We do, however, breathe actual oxygen, so it's probably a pretty fair trade off.
OT:

esp. if you all shovel your driveways by hand.....:P:D...which we might still wind up doing if my grandpa's snow-thrower (which my aunt let us have after he died) can't be fixed....it's pretty new but it won't run for very long before dying....every start-up it runs like a champ.....for about 30 seconds......

hmmmm.......winter life in the upper midwest sounds quite....bracing.....and more prospects for snow days too.....only area here in WNY that gets a lot of snow days tends to be the Southtowns/Southern Tier.....those are the areas commonly targeted by the lake-effect bands we get.....we get our fair share up in the Northtowns/Northern Tier sometimes but mostly the southtowns gets most of the lake effect

More Shipmas Carol silliness...

{To the Tune "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"}

Don’t ask Sam out
Or try to be her guy
Don’t program your house
With the sound of her voice
Jack O’Neill is Sam Carter’s true love.

Alien drugs
Stuck in time loops
Alternate Universe
Or any excuse
Jack O’Neill is Sam Carter’s true love.

He knows when you’ve been stalking
And you’d better not kidnap her
Cause he’ll track you down and blast your ass
At his cabin they’ll be *Fishing* happy ever after!

Don’t hack her classified files
Through your friend in the FBI
Don’t crash her stakeout
Unless you want to die
Jack O’Neill is Sam Carter’s true love.

Jack and Sam will always be in love!

Yes I grabbed my plot bunnies and have been writing them since I got home tonight.

My stenos ate them....
You keep your stenos away from my bunnies! MY Bunnies are sweet and innocent and don't need to be mixing with your bad boy stenos!:P

Also on another note watching Chimera right now (research for fic) and I had just finish thinking
1. Sam wears tons of skirts in this episode (which I remember y'all talking about the other week)
and
2. that this episode is not as bad as I thought. I mean I know there is fishing in the future (I am actually talking about fishing and not 'fishing'). Then it all went downhill. This episode sucks. I want to punch the potato head. I do have to giggle over T with the donuts though:D and when did Daniel move into a house? Lastly I really hate the stalker.

Apparently I can't post and watch episodes at the same time.

I think the house was because he sorta did that dying thing one too many times. Especially that one time where he was gone for a year. Landlords don't like tenants who's lives are iffy. They need hardcore, breathing people. A house is easier for him to will to Jack or Sam to take care of until he's busy not being dead anymore.

Also. Our awesomeness broke the thread. Although I'm blaming Amanda for this one. All that fluff. :P

Ya know its been a while since I have seen season 7. Just finished Death Knell, its like seeing an old friend again (which is good). Good episode (nice comfort shoulder at the end:D). Also all those booboos on Sam's face...wouldn't at least one of them leave a nice scar? Especially the ones on the left side? Nad's New Thread Poem

We squued so much
we broke the thread
We are the kind of chaos
GW never before... had.

If GW had pants
we bent and ripped out
all that's left is some fabric
that's hanging about.

If GW was turkey
we stuffed it too much
Exploded in he oven
and looking as such.

If GW was chrismas lights
we lit them with glee
who cares 'bout the neighbours?
At least we can see.

...

I think it's less cuddling and more sheer boredom. I look outside and I think, I don't want to go out there. Hmmm whatever can I do... :: Looks at husband ::

Which is EXACTLY what S/J would think if they were stuck someplace snowy...

Cuz gutter duh.

*snort* ...well Sam needs to entertain Jack....you know...he will be bored otherwise...

:P

You send a big nudge nudge over to Wendy you can see it tomorrow (you might get to see 2 since she also has another one of my fics:P...I am a patient penguin:P)

Now I am getting to work on my other plot bunny. Not so fluffy:P

Mwoahahahahaha and I should stop posting now since apparently I again can't post and watch SG1:P

Yeah and I remember mentioning to my friend that Curt might need some serious help when he got back from Iraq... when I spoke with her about the wedding a few weeks ago she had thought it wasn't a good idea... now I'm wondering if he wasn't thinking like this all along and wanted to make sure his baby was taken care of. :(

To be on topic: I'm reading a story that I kinda want to stop reading, not because it's not well written but because it's another Pete beating Sam story and I just don't ever seem to buy it. As someone who lives with severe depression herself and who is watching this unfold with shock, please please please if you feel this way talk to someone. Hell, send me an e-mail because I'll gladly talk about what I deal with just so you don't feel alone. Just don't do anything...reckless. I love you guys.

I think they're trying to figure out what's up with the other thread, fix it, then merge this thread into it. We'll see....

It's probably hard for them to work. Deep in the gutter, dark in the cavern, or encased in fluff can't exactly be optimum work environments.

It's amazing how many stories have Sam being the victim of domestic violence at Pete's hands.

And while I do admire some authors who are clearly taking it seriously and trying to highlight the issue through Sam as a character, I really can't say I find it completely believable in any fic I've read partly, because any fic with Pete physically violent seems a distortion of his character and partly, because despite her tolerating hissy fits the morning after aside, I don't think she'd tolerate actual violence.

I can see her offguard in a personal situation getting hit once by surprise, and that would be the end of the relationship - and I don't doubt if whoever it was tried again, she would protect herself.

However, I do accept the point that sometimes it's the people you least expect to be suffering physical violence in a domestic situation who are; that getting hit by someone you love and who purports to love you is very different from a battlefield engaging hand to hand with an enemy.

I just think it's a very difficult scenario to write a fic around with any believability. And I have come across one or two where Jack is the violent abuser which just leaves me gobsmacked really...

Well the plot idea I had would have been set when she was a Captain (or even AU with a non-military Sam) with a completely made up character. I don't see Pete as an abuser - and like you I just see it as a distortion of his character (and I feel that often times it's a projected dislike of the character - a demonizing if you will). I was actually looking at doing more of an emotional/verbal abuse - sort of a different take.

Nuthin' wrong with that. And it's my personal view of the characters that I look for - which isn't the same as everyone's. Like I said, sometimes I wish I wasn't :P

I'll put up with OOC... to an extent. It depends on my mood. Sometimes I want to see S/J say SCREW THE REGS - but I'm picky about that. I hate the long drawn out conversations of "Are you sure?" "What about our careers?" and of course it's always assume they're going to get court martialed. Which is why I wrote my AU Supposed Crime :P Because I wanted to fulfill my eff-you fantasy in fic to my own satisfaction LOL

If the author only slides out of the lines a little I'll keep reading but if we start scribbling all over the page... and I absolutely SCREAM if they keep them on the same team at the end of the fic. Usually I won't even read the last few paragraphs if I find out they're going to stay on SG-1 together. And then I'm sad I even finished the fic.

And your beta is awesome - and tell her I miss her!

Definitely there is no particular 'type' of woman (or man for that matter) that endures abuse, either physical or mental. A person doesn't have to be 'weak' in order to find themselves in that situation and feel utterly helpless and unable to get out. Ask any woman what she would do if her husband/partner was violent towards her and she will no doubt say that he'd only have to do it once and that would be the end of the relationship. But in fact that almost never happens. You'd have to have actually experienced it to know or even try to understand how you would react, and often it's the women that their friends consider to be 'strong' that have the most difficulty in dealing with it.

Pete doesn't seem the type? Who does?

Sam is a strong person, a trained soldier, so she wouldn't 'put up with it'? Don't kid yourselves! It just doesn't work that way :(

Pete doesn't seem the type? Who does? I would argue Pete doesn't seem the type because he seems, at least after Chimera, to be indulging in a fair bit of hero worship. He seems more puppy-dogish than aggressive or needing to prove dominance. The fact he was willing to go as far with the relationship as he did knowing her heart wasn't fully in it, I think, speaks to that.

But then again, I don't know a whole lot about the issues involved with this personally, which is just one of the reasons I'd never be comfortable writing it. I do tend to think, too, Sam/Jack (and Stargate) have enough inherent issues that it's not generally necessary to add outside issues which don't flow directly from canonical situations.

Though there's that bias again ;) Which means I'm in all probability completely wrong and this should be totally ignored. :P

Yep. That's kind of why I had that paragraph you bolded included. No matter how much the characterisation might suggest Sam wouldn't put up with domestic violence, the truth is in reality nobody really knows what goes on in someone else's relationship and how someone is going to react behind closed doors.

But, I still stand by my view that I've yet to see it believably conveyed in a fic because IMO most of the time the author has had to distort Sam's characterisation, sometimes quite subtly, to make the fic drama work.

I want to add that while he was suspicious, he was never controlling. I think while he threw his little temper tantrum in "Chimera", he would have walked away rather than demand she give him more - and to be fair they do have him acknowledge his silliness in "Affinity". And we even see with Fifth that when Fake Pete gets forceful and angry Sam knows it's Fifth because of his violent anger. She says that Pete would never behave that way. He just doesn't exhibit any of the controlling tendencies.

And I agree with this - while it's true that I have hard time imagining later Sam putting up with it - I suppose it's possible - but even if that were true, I don't think Jack and the rest of the team would put up with it. With the amount of time they all spend together I don't think THEY would put up with it (and it would be reeeeeaally hard to hide with all her physicals). That's sort of why I was thinking about going for an emotional/verbal abuse. Harder to see.

I dated a guy that was emotionally/verbally abusive - he broke up with me when I started to stand up to him (thankfully I only wasted a few months with him so no lasting damage LOL). He then dated a friend of mine who was with him for two years... she was a strong personality but she withdrew from all of us and it definitely affected her. I had tried to warn her, but ... :(

I've always thought Pete had the potential to become a controller type abuser.

The investigating her behind her back; wanting to know everything about her life; the pushing of their relationship at every point; the grand romantic gestures like buying her a house...

I could see over a period of months/years, his controlling Sam first with small stuff, and later with big stuff. That type of abuse is usually quite insidious and hard to spot, and the victim usually ends up very isolated because the abuser has ended up controlling choice of friends, time spent with family and friends, etc.

OOC...I tend to be very lenient in reading fics - we all have our own idea of the characters but my favourite authors probably land in 95%+ characterisation land of how I see Sam and Jack myself. Then there's probably a swathe between 50-95% which I'll read without rolling my eyes but with the mental note that its AU if we're in season three and they're screwing the regs...and then there's below 50% where they're completely out for me and I can't read it.

Exactly. If an author is going to tackle it, they should keep Sam in-character in that scenario and do it but most do make her not-Sam.

I don't necessarily think it shouldn't be attempted as a topic for fanfic as I do think these topics are good to explore and highlight, but as someone with knowledge of both, I do take issue with it or rape being treated lightly in fanfic or used as a plot device for the singular purpose of the ship.

I hear you on that Rachel (and thanks for the edit note) - I don't think it should be taken lightly and I definitely don't want to. I write fanfic because I love the characters and I try to write where the *story* should go which means while I want to write an S/J fic, I wouldn't force it. It's just like when I write a story with depression - one of the most annoying things I read is when people have Sam and Jack go hang out together for a few days, have sex, and then she comes back all better (and hey MacKenzie is a quack!) - no, no, no, Jack would be a great support, but a night in bed (or several nights in bed) with him is not going to cure it... :: mutters ::

As hard as I tried, I couldn’t resist chiming in on the subject of *that character* and his potential for abusive behavior. So….

The following is a snippet of dialogue that I transcribed from the TV series “NUMB3RS”; the moment I first heard it, this character naturally immediately came to mind. I wasn’t gonna post anything about it cause I just generally hate discussing this subject, as I’m sure y’all know quite well, but here I am… So the line:

“Stalkers fall into six basic types: Rejected, Resentful, Predatory, Intimacy Seeker, Incompetent Suitor…”
(She’s interrupted before she gets to the sixth one and it’s never subsequently mentioned…)

I’d say that particularly loathsome character that TPTB in their infinite wisdom [/snark] chose to utilize to ‘break Sam’s black widow curse’ would fit under that last umbrella, “Incompetent Suitor”. Even as much as I despise him, I never really saw him as the violent-abusive type, though I did have him flip out rather violently in the one and only fic I actually used his character in when Sam broke things off with him, but that was the first and last time, within the context of my story, that I envisioned him responding with physical aggression.

I saw him more as the super-insecure type. Which is not at all the type of guy to keep Sam Carter’s interest, in my sometimes humble Shippy opinion. And I never saw anything (in the one time I’ve managed to force myself to view each and any of his scenes) to contradict that impression. Quite the opposite, in fact. Even the very end of his Stargate tenure backed up that hypothesis, when he acknowledged that he knew her heart wasn’t in it. A man with true self-confidence would not propose marriage to a woman because he’s afraid of losing her. His behavior simply reeked of desperation all the way through. Again, just my sometimes humble opinion, which is admittedly severely biased against this particular character.

You know, this is probably the calmest discussion of that character that I’ve ever managed! Yay me!

As for Pete I don't see him being abusive. Jonas yes, Pete no.

I don't know about Pete, but I think Jonas could have been. I agree.

That said, it doesn't mean it couldn't happen to Sam and her strength as a person and a soldier doesn't mean she would be able to deal with it quickly and effectively. Combat is a thousand times different to abuse, kind of like firing a P90 on the enemy is different to murder? It's the emotion involved. I think if an author was to do it realistically, and keeping Sam In-Character, then it could be believeable. I would buy it happening to her with Jonas as well, even in canon. Not sure on Pete, really not. Canon-wise, definitely not.

EDIT: See, we're the thread at the End of the Universe... We finally broke Gateworld to our will ;)

So that's why I felt so lost this morning. I was looking in the other End of the Universe...

Ummm, yeah, just started reading the sixth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy. :P

Oh, and I saved a copy of that awesome pic, for posterity. Of course, now that it's out in cyberspace, it will never completely disappear. Oh, the joys of modern technology!

I feel a Hathor moment coming on here... "You will serve us nicely our beloved."

Tragic OT
Thanks so much Pol (and to everyone who's expressed sympathy). I keep having to re-read the e-mail because it seems almost dreamlike and surreal. If I need to talk I will email - that's what I love about this thread - we're all so different and yet we have a lot of shared experiences.

What makes suicide so hard for me to hear about is because I kinda feel like people who deal with mental illness like me are fellow comrades and when they kill themselves I feel like I just watched a soldier fall on the battlefield... anyway that's going off into a more personal territory... but I'm glad I have someplace to connect.

I love those pics tooooo.

Kids and the gutter OT
My little boy will be 3 in Feb... we discovered he knew how to open doors when while he was supposed to be taking a nap and Elijah & I were thinking about fishing and suddenly our bedroom door opens and "Hey there!" he says in his cheery little voice. We live in an old building and the bedrooms don't have locks O.O

Yes - now that's what S/J kid fics need - the kids walking in on them. :D

 Oh yes... umm. I'm still waiting for that day myself...

OT kids

My little boy is three in February too. He cannot get in and out of rooms at the moment because our door handles are really high. He wakes up in the morning and, if we're not already up, he knocks on the door. It's sort of cute!

And OT your friend.

I am sorry to hear that. So sad. Depression is indeed a funny thing. I lost a cousin to suicide several years ago now, although in his case drugs played a big part of the problem. :(

Exactly, that's why I bolded it :)

Which in fact should not be necessary if any kind of accuracy is to be achieved, because she can be exactly who she is and still have difficulty in dealing with such a situation. Especially if it's true that Jonas treated her that way and then it happened again with another partner, because that's even harder to get your head around and deal with.

I can actually see Jonas as having been, at least, verbally abusive towards Sam. Abuse can be extremely subtle and creep up very slowly. Often it's only people on the outside looking in that can see the situation for what it is. I'd not rule Sam out as a potential sufferer of abuse just because she doesn't seem the type.

I do think though, if you really must write something like rape or abuse it should be extremely well researched or, preferably, something you have some first hand experience of. I do understand that some people might want to write a fic around this as a catharsis for dealing with their own personal experience (there was a very good X Files fanfic author who did just this with Scully's character once - again someone you would not imagine could be a sufferer of abuse.) However, I think we all have our no-go areas when it comes to fic and if the subject matter is too personal and it's not done with respect and knowledge then it can be something of an insult to those reading it who have experienced it. In other words, tread lightly if you want to venture into that territory in your writing.

Gar, go away with those knobs, we got proper door handles over here. And the ones that you can lock with the little turning thing on the knob... Couldn't get the hang of these, people kept on barging in when I'd rather have them not to.

I'm sick in bed and feeling slightly better (=can watch TV all day rather then just sleep) and I have been scrolling through the drag that is season 8. There is so much relationship-stuff going on in that season that it bothers even me as a die-hard shipper... Couldn't they just have them kiss after one too many close calls rather than this soap opera season?

And I've finally watched Continuum:
Sam buying Jack's favourite cereals and looking sad. Awwww. It was quite shippy, but why no on-screen confirmation? *rolls eyes*

Secret Santas, you keep private until it's been sent on to your SS (presuming you have sent Eve the file in text/word format). Then, if you want, you can post on FF.net.

Shipmas, well, anything goes really. If you want to post it earlier go ahead. Failing that, post on the 19th. :)

I think I'm read so much stuff that's OoC, that they have to be kissing/breaking the regs or just not *sound* like them for me to be bothered by it.

And sometimes I'll admit, I read OoC...just because. :p

it depends on the out of character behaviors that's in the fic, but if it's them breaking the regs to be physically together, i have no probs with it. :p

for me, part of the 'fun' of reading fics is to able to go places that the show would never do.

majorsal
December 13th, 2009, 04:02 PM
Well the plot idea I had would have been set when she was a Captain (or even AU with a non-military Sam) with a completely made up character. I don't see Pete as an abuser - and like you I just see it as a distortion of his character (and I feel that often times it's a projected dislike of the character - a demonizing if you will). I was actually looking at doing more of an emotional/verbal abuse - sort of a different take.

i could see the ingredients for badpete (just from the writing of him checking up on her, following her, getting irked that she wouldn't tell him what he wanted to know), but i can't see sam taking it. that's part of why i was so ticked that sam appeared to forgive his misdeeds at the end of 'chimera'.

but going strictly by how he was written (especially after 'chimera'), the worst i could see pete going is smothering sam with attention and love. that's really not a bad flaw to inflict on someone :p, expect if you don't like the smothering (like me :S :p).

but, for me, no matter who sam's boyfriend was (and who was cast as him), pete would be disliked by the majority of shippers. by default, he's the enemy. :p

And then I'm sad I even finished the fic.

i don't mind them staying on the same team, b/c i think they 'could' do that, it would just be a challenge to handle their feelings not getting in the way. but i think that's part of the fun in watching that journey, to see if they 'can' do it. :p

anyone that knows me knows i LOVE gutter, but there's this one author on s/j always fanfic site that i can't read, b/c she has sam and jack acting soooooo out of character that i can't stand 'seeing' them in her fics. but to each his/her own, b/c for that author, she's writing from her heart, and even though i don't enjoy her fics, she does and there's others that do. so i applaud her following her heart :), but i just don't read her fics. :p

~edit: my post count has 1,2,3,4,5, but not in order :p

majorsal
December 13th, 2009, 04:16 PM
But, I still stand by my view that I've yet to see it believably conveyed in a fic because IMO most of the time the author has had to distort Sam's characterisation, sometimes quite subtly, to make the fic drama work.

i've seen that, where an author wants to do a certain idea so badly that they go ahead and do it, but twist the characters to fit the idea.

like how they slipped vala into the sgc and sg1... i never felt vala was out of character, it was everyone else putting up with it that was! :p to me at least.

(try to imagine jack putting up with her shenanigans... )

that went somewhere i didn't mean it to go. :p

i was going to say that one time i read a fic where someone had sam with an eating disorder... i felt the author had the disorder, and wanted to work through her issues by having sam have it to, but 'distorted' sam to make it work. i had to quit the fic. i just wasn't 'seeing' sam in there anymore.

but i still enjoy going places in fics that aren't always comfortable for the characters or the readers. it all depends for me 'how' it's done. i can pretty much read anything. :p

(except sam dying fics... :danielanime08: :danielanime08:)

i could see the ingredients for badpete (just from the writing of him checking up on her, following her, getting irked that she wouldn't tell him what he wanted to know), but i can't see sam taking it. that's part of why i was so ticked that sam appeared to forgive his misdeeds at the end of 'chimera'. I think Sam forgave his misdeeds for the very same reason she was willing to settle for him at all - she was so, IMHO, desperate for love and appreciation, to have that part of her which she (and Jack, really) had long denied feel fulfilled that she was willing to let other things 'slip'.

Which, maybe now that I think about it, if you were to go with a Why Sam (the actual canon character) Would Put Up With Abuse might be the key to explaining it. That Sam was so needing to be loved and to have a 'normal life' outside the SGC that she was willing to put up with more than she should have in order to make Pete 'fit' that picture.

Just a thought...

Which in fact should not be necessary if any kind of accuracy is to be achieved, because she can be exactly who she is and still have difficulty in dealing with such a situation. Especially if it's true that Jonas treated her that way and then it happened again with another partner, because that's even harder to get your head around and deal with.

sam was a bit door matty in 'chimera', so i could see her getting in over her head... :(

just not with pete. he's too much of a wuss. :p

Okay I have to know - WHY do you avoid AUs? I mean I generally avoid established because... well... I just love UST and I enjoy the moment UST turns to RST and since we HAVE RST I have to retreat to an AU to get my fix. Yes. It is an addiction. In fics or on the show itself? Cause I'm a purist both ways (won't use pics of AT/RDA or AUs/dreams to represent 'real' Sam/Jack generally, either. Case in point:
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o156/JenniferJF/Sigs/IfOnly.jpg

Explanation (in spoilers cause most people won't care):Because, only IMHO of course, AUs are, necessarily, OoC. Sure, they're 'what ifs', but given we are each a sum of the events in our life as much as a sum of our DNA, a Sam and Jack who have been through events different from those 'our' Sam and Jack have been through are, necessarily, not the same people as our Sam and Jack. Maybe it's the scientist in me.. I dunno. And I realize a story which takes place at a specific point in the series with a different event and veers off from there might be a sort of character play on what-if that had happened to Sam and Jack, given their natures, and how would they have reacted... But at the end of the day, ultimately, it's still not OUR Sam and Jack. Because that never happened to Sam and Jack.

See. Purist... :P

But even more than that, and this may seem to contradict what I just said, I do believe there are certain innate characteristics, caused by basic nature or the events of their lives, which cause Sam and Jack to act the way they do and to make the choices they do within the series. So, for example, having Sam and Jack get together, to say "Screw the Regulations" et al, just isn't THEM. If it were, they would have DONE IT. And for them to chose to do something like that (and that's just one example) in a fic is to change the basic nature of who they are.

I also believe Sam and Jack as characters have been drawn so complexly that there are very specific reasons the events in their lives had to play out very similarly to the way they did - for them to be given the opportunity to work through their issues at their own pace and to be able to come together after having worked through those issues - which actually makes them stronger and more complete both as individuals and as a couple. Events, basically, didn't dictate the choices and decisions they made. They made those decisions *around* those events, and sometimes those events were the catalysts, but for it to have played out differently I think would have led to disaster. A Sam and Jack who had given in to temptation, or a Jack who hadn't worked through his fear of loss, or a Sam who still felt like she was breaking the rules and failing to live up to her father's expectations (as examples) wouldn't be the strong and secure people I believe they've become on screen.

So I guess, at the end of the day, I *like* the story we were told and have no desire to change who Sam and Jack are or were. When I write (or read) fanfic, I'm interested in adding to canon, to exploring more fully who the Sam and Jack on screen are, and what *their* motivations and feelings are and were. I'm not interested in either taking those characters as drawn, or slightly different characters with the same names, and placing them in different situations and seeing what happens. There's nothing wrong with doing that (of course). Its just not 'my thing'.

I dunno *why*. It's just not :PAnd hopefully, since you asked the question, some of that makes sense to you.

It's okay to read a story about when it happens for other characters, but they're not Sam and Jack, even if they have the same names and work at the SGC.

AU Thoughts

No it totally makes sense and that's cool that it's not your thing. The only point I would disagree with is that all AU is necessarily OoC. I guess I see that there are innate characteristics and the question is - how would they handle "x"? You're right though that at that point they stop being OUR S/J. That's where I'm okay with that, but when I'm reading it I expect those personalities to still exist. (Actually in one of my AU fics when Sam studied the mirror she had a conversation with Orlin about it. The way I had him explain it, there are not infinite numbers of universes but only a finite number - but that number is astronomically large. As it stands, there is no universe in which "our" Sam "type" exists that would say, murder Daniel in cold blood. However, there may exist a Sam that would such a thing but the branch off would have happened far in advance of the current time period, say during her childhood.).

It does come down to interest. You want to see canon expanded because you like the story. I myself am rather bored with canon. I want to see different aspects of their personality. I want to know "what if"? I don't want to change the canon on the show, but I want to take the characters in my own corner of the world and play with them. They're still Sam/Jack as far as I'm concerned, just because I write AU doesn't mean (in my mind) that they can now behave however they want. Am I making sense here?

Besides, why do I want to write more canon stories when others, like you, do it so well? :)

No I totally get it and hey, fanfic is for entertainment right? I think AU, in canon, etc are like "genres" in fanfic and not everyone is going to enjoy the same thing. My disappointment with canon was that I felt as though they never stretched the characters as far as I wanted them to which is what leads me to write AU.

And like I said, my desire to see "in canon" stories is satisfied with things like your stories, Pol's Campfires/Embrace Me, Rachel's Aftershocks, etc. I *like* heck *love* those stories and I don't feel the need to add anything - that's not to say I don't have the urge to explore certain things (I really want to explore Sam post-Jolinar and I did a little with my MacKenzie/Sam fic I wrote which is IC). You guys do such a great job to the point that like I said, I generally don't like S/J established and I think it's really b/c you all set the bar that high :D

ROTFL!! Seriously. LOL.

Hmmm...Canon vs AU.

Do I like AU? I know nobody's asked, but I've been reading your discussions and thought I'd chime in.

Hmmm. If, and I say *if* the story is plausible and well-written, I can really get into an AU (if, by AU, you mean that Sam and Jack get together...fishing and all...and carry on at the SGC - or wherever) fic.

Why? Because we authors can only write so much within the narrow confines of the established (ie, aired) canon. Can we, as do the writers of the novels, expand on that universe and still remain in canon? Sure. Will it be S/J? Nope.

But *Pol raises an index finger,* I sometimes just feel the need for some flippin' resolution! I can see UST for 10 years (okay, really 8.5) on television/dvd/hulu, etc... and in the novels. Sometimes I want my Sam and Jack to be S/J. Sometimes I *need* them to be S/J, with confirmed fishing and all that entails.

I do get a bit frustrated with non-canon stories that are in canon right up to the last page or so and then...WHAMMO! Fishing! There are few really well written fics that tackle the S/J dynamic and balance it with SGC and/or apocafic stuff without going GROSSLY OOC. And I'm talkin' *G-R-O-S-S-L-Y* OOC. :::shudder:::

So...like I said. I *know* (as in, I lived it people, I know damned well what the regs say, what I, as an officer could and could not do, yada, yada) what couldn't really happen in the show - the rules were against them. (I also know of two perfectly good exceptions to the regs with whom I served, but that's another tale.) I also know that I enjoy a tale well told and that if it veers into the land of AU/non-canon, then so be it.

In fact, I'll be loading said good, long, well-written and mostly non-canon stories (by that I mean S/J, as opposed to non-canon meaning grossly ooc) onto my new e-Reader...if Santa got my note.

If not, I'll be loading them on the ol' PDA once again.

I don't know about JennF, or Rachel and her Aftershocks, as I have yet to treat myself to them, but I know that I really have a hard time staying in canon (ie, keeping the kissing/touching/long looks to a minimum, especially after a particularly powerful episode) when writing my Campfires because...damn, but Amanda and Rick have chemistry!
