You don't have to build anything extravagant.
Remember the episodes of SG1, when they encountered Gates on planets that still had their cover stones on them and couldn't be used until you removed the stones. Gates with the stones blocking the actual portal could not have wormholes engaged on them period.
However, when you bury a gate... you can still use it sometimes. If you don't mind coming out of the other side buried alive.
So it either depends on how thick/dense the material blocking the portal is, or there's a special way you have to do it, or it's a plot hole. But it is a known fact you can render a gate useless by completely covering it up if you so desire.

the only form of a double iris that would be useful is a trinium one and a shield one this way you combine the strengths of both and eliminate the weakness of the other one, for example, with a trinium iris, a person wearing kull armour cant just walk through and with a shield iris, then you cant bombard the iris with subatomical particles like sokar did untill it failed because a shield should work as long as theres power and just ignore the heat.STARGATE ROCKS

Originally posted by K^2 View PostIt depends on where the blocking object is. If something blocks location where event horizon should form, the gate will not engage. If it does not, the gate will engage, and the vortex will dig a cave in whatever material the gate was buried in. That's why the SGC's iris has to be open until vortex dissipates. Once it does, you can move something right next to event horizon to prevent reintegration of matter.STARGATE ROCKS

So, it really stands to reason that you can'tsigpic

I always figured that iris closed when the gate initialized thing was just a plot hole, and they meant for it to always be open. However, i guess it doesn't really matter.
They've never stipulated exactly what it would take to make a stargate inactive. Just anything blocking the event horizon isn't going to do it. As a stargate buried in dirt... will still activate... sometimes. A stargate buried in lava will not. It's just known, that you can do it if you really want to, and supposedly it isn't that difficult a thing to figure out.
Or there are a couple plot holes, and the gates were never intended to activate when they were buried, but the writers ran out of ideas.... guess we'll never know.

where has it been mentioned in the show that the vortex dosent form when the iris is closed or is that just your personal opinion.STARGATE ROCKS
