View Full Version : What would McKay do?

The entire time Rush was working on the ship, I was just thinking that Rodney McKay would of had the problem fixed in no time flat. I keep hearing his voice in my head, "We are screwed, and I mean totally screwed. Look, when those CO2 levels rise, it is going to be bad. Suffocation is not a pretty death, let me tell you."

and that is why SGA sucked in that respect. Mckay alias fixitall. Rush is believable, and believably put that he has so much to do that it's not even funny. Eli asked wheter he cared about the death of Armstrong or not, and rush was like, "i am buisy doing 5 things at a time, i do not need more."
mckay was fun when he was a nerd, who sucked at love and social interaction and who could, with the occasional screwup, fix some stuff. in the end, he got a girl, and lost what made him mckay.

Because Sam never did that in SG-1?
I have a big reveal for you guys, they aren't going to all die from the first problem they encounter and they probably won't figure it out in the first 5 minutes.

McKay would have a hilarious panic attack, then figure out how to get everyone back to Earth by the end of the ep.

McKay wasn't that bad. Daniel Jackson was much more of a Mary Sue. They kept McKay's lack of social skills and fighting ability pretty consistent with only minor and believable improvements. Daniel Jackson became good at practically everything. For some reason, he gained the marksmanship and fighting ability of a well trained soldier by the middle of the first season and he completely lost his nerdy personality.

If SG-1 and SGA teams would have been on board, this is what would have happened:
* Teal'c would simply pick a rock and throw it on the shuttle door button with one precise swing, fixing that problem.
* Sam and Mckay would not only fix the life support system, but would manage to turn the ship around, set it's course back to earth, learn how the FTL drive works, and make the Kino's be able to prepare coffee for the rest of the team.
* Teyla would choose a random person from the people to father her next child.
* Daniel would learn from the ancient database on the ship about a mythical planet where the ancients kept a device that could destroy all evil in the universe.
* O'neill would use the LRC and control Dr. Lee on earth to order Pizza.
* Jennifer and clone Carson would manage to completely heal all the injured people on board, and also cure the senator's terminal illness.
* Sheppard would play golf with the Kino's while shouting on McKay that he needs to complete the fixes to the ship faster.
* Ronon would punch Rush in the face, quieting him for the rest of the trip home.
And everybody would get back to earth just in time for the Pizzas :D

That's about how I had it figured.
But yeah, now that I think of it, I miss Sheppard's "But you KNOW how to fix it, right?" followed by McKay's whiney voice- "No.. We are so totally screwed!"
I didn't really start missing SGA until this premiere. Not that I didn't miss it before, but now it's more so.

McKay would of yelled at Eli! and then took the credit for the work solving the equation on the MMO.actually McKay would've solved the equation in a matter of hours not months and in the same way would've pulled off another of his tricks to get everyone back home by the end of part2 (not part1, this one would have been spent whining) however he's busy on Atlantis and so much the better because otherwise this wouldn't be much of an adventure for the SGU folks would it :|

If McKay was on the ship, he would read over the schematics of the ship, shut down decks not being used, divert all aux power to existing life support where it is needed, turn off the FTL drive, accessed the navigation systems and turn the ship around.
Be able to make a make-shift CO2 scrubbers, scan throughout the ship to see if there any control chair so it can future assist him on his search for say ZPMs etc.

my sister and I were watching, and humorous comments were thrown out so many times. Keep in mind, we have seen the first 2 seasons of SGA, and part of the third. So we are sort of n00bs at the entirety of SG.
"This is ridiculous, McKay would have fixed this in the first 10 minutes!"
"Zelenka would have easily fixed this within the first 30 minutes!"
"Hey, do you think they will come across that floating nanobot guy they left in space that one time?"
"Where is that ET guy who is on that Deadalus ship? He would make fun of them all, and fix it in the first hour just to watch them squirm"
"This Rush guy needs to halucinate about that lady from SG1 and she would help him fix this thing?"
"Do you think somebody is going to wake up in the nuthouse, and this was just a dream or trick of the nanobots?"
"Who are these people? Am I suppose to be paying attention to any of them in particular?"
"I just figured out what's going on here. Dr. Rush isn't a Dr. and he doesn't know what he is doing. The problem is, everybody else thinks he does!"

But that is why I loved McKay. If you are expecting a sci fi series to be believable, man, I think you're on the wrong boat. The humor and over the top characters made stargate what it is, and that's what I like. I know the actors aren't that much at ease with their characters (let's face it, most of them are young and maybe not that experienced) and I guess there will be character definition along the way.
Now, back on topic. McKay would have whine, I would have laughed, he would then find a solution like 3 seconds just before everyone dies by using some "incredibly complex maths", looked for a chair, diverting the power to life support and what fuels the ship.

That's exactly why both SG-1 and Atlantis became jokes. Fixing problems with a hypertechnocombobulator or a pixiedust algorithm in the last 5 minutes of every episode is BORING.
When SG-1 was at it's most amazing, during the first half of its run, there was much less or that kind of nonsense. There was a little, sure, but it didn't really feel like cheating.
What I loved about the Air parts 1 and 2 was that in that whole 90 minutes very little was really figured out or fixed. There was only a small amount of unbelievable problem solving/science/math so it never felt like the show was cheating. Also, getting beat by a simple door that wouldn't close from the outside and having to sacrifice someone was a refreshing set of circumstances in Stargate.

Unlike Rush who took time to dawdle now and then and to address the masses, I think McKay would have gone straight to fiddling and trying to figure things out. And I think he would have told everyone else to shut the heck up and leave him alone if they wanted any chance at survival. And then he would have kept working until he figured something out.

what i actually liked was that rush knew how to solve the co2 problem, but his solutions requires stuff they do not have. like lithium oxide, calcium oxide, even some water and a base (sodium hydroxide, kalium hydroxide, etc) would've solved the problem for a while. the problem is, they do not have that.
I have a big reveal for you guys, they aren't going to all die from the first problem they encounter and they probably won't figure it out in the first 5 minutes.
oh yea, i hadnt figured THAT out.
there is a difference between solving something magically and solving something realistically. the machello device was realistically. keller in The Seed was just magical.
the Destiny will provide realistic solutions. it simply goes to the planet with the resource we need. then we have to make sure the ship does not fall apart and we have to get the resource.

McKay would have whined, complained, had John yell at him to hurry up, had Ronon threaten to shot him, eaten several dozen power bars, and fixed the whole ship in 5 minutes.

If McKay had been on SGU, McKay would have whined and complained, true. Unlike Atlantis though, the folks on the Destiny are way too wound up to tolerate McKay's usual load of crap. Unlike Ronon, Greer would have dispensed with threatening him altogether and would actually have kicked and/or punched McKay, especially with how he treated Rush in Air part 3. That's something that would never have occurred on Atlantis. If annoyed enough, Lt. Scott would probably help Greer do this. :D

I did hear a resounding "Ohhhh No no-no-no-no-no" in my head every time something went wrong. Good old McKay, hard to take seriously, but adorkable in his own whiney way. Good times.
(Referring to SG1, for those who may not have seen)
Oh, and my (semi) lame excuse for Daniel transforming from geeky guy to G.I. Brain - hey, man, the love of his life was captured and enslaved by a Goauld. I call that all that motivation he needs to be able to do the impossible - like that whole "Mom lifting a car off her child" thing, over and over again.
And another thing - What were his chances on Earth of ending up with a gorgeous, sweet, exotic woman like Sha-re? None whatsoever.
That's why he didn't get the babe until he was on another planet. (Yeah, there was Sara but that didn't work out - his geeky work ethic killed that) So, first of all there's the true love running all deep and whatnot, and then even if hadn't been in love with his wife - and if he'd been some shallow geeky-jerk - he still would have gone to hell and back to find her because, to his knowledge at the time, What Other Chance Would He Have To Hook Up With A Gorgeous Woman Like That?

Well 10 years on SG1 you would tend to get better at the shooting and milatery side of things
But even the first few times we saw Daniel firing his weapon, in early seasons, he was WAY more confident than McKay. Mind you, that's not saying much really. McKay's strategy of turning away from your target, cowering like a little girl, while pointing the gun *behind* you and emptying the barrels in the vain hope that a bullet just *might* be lucky enough to hit the guy you're shooting at....well, it left a lot to be desired. LOL
Despite that side of him, I quite liked McKay. I hated him at first in SG-1. I wanted someone to pin him down and force-feed him lemon chicken. Mainly out of a sense of loyalty and respect to Carter (as he was so mean to her), but as he mellowed and buried a few of his sociopathic tendencies, I ended up really liking the guy. I'd certainly be happy for him to show up in Universe at some point (although just for the one episode).

actually McKay would've solved the equation in a matter of hours not months and in the same way would've pulled off another of his tricks to get everyone back home by the end of part2 (not part1, this one would have been spent whining) however he's busy on Atlantis and so much the better because otherwise this wouldn't be much of an adventure for the SGU folks would it :|
He didn't solve the problem. Neither did Carter. Because of what it was, the key to dialing the 9th Chevron, we can assume everyone had a crack at it and the MMO thing was a last resort when none of the others could figure it out.
IMO.

Maybe McKay just can't hold a candle to our own Mathboy? ;)
