SDCC: James Cameron touts IMAX and Avatar

If current expectations for Avatar weren't high enough, James Cameron himself offered some new information about the forthcoming fantasy film that is almost certain to drive prospective fans wild with anticipation. "Watching Avatar is like dreaming with your eyes wide open," Cameron said in a prerecorded introduction Wednesday during an IMAX presentation in conjunction with Comic-Con International in San Diego, Calif.

SDCC: Fans says Avatar will be as game-changing as Star Wars

James Cameron's screening of never-before-seen footage from Avatar was perhaps the most highly-anticipated presentation at this year's Comic-Con. But once the fans had seen it, were they satisfied? I stood outside the packed Hall H and tried to find out as thousands of audience members streamed from the auditorium.

The consensus? Stunning. Phenomenal. Breathtaking. Of the dozens of viewers interviewed, none had a disparaging word, and many thought the film would literally change the way we thought about science fiction.

SDCC: Avatar 3-D footage wows Comic-Con

After an afternoon at San Diego's Comic-Con packed with amazing new revelations, including a first look at images from Tron and clips from New Moon, James Cameron offered fans the first-ever look at footage from his forthcoming, highly-anticipated film Avatar. And while his prerecorded comments at yesterday's IMAX event might have suggested that the filmmaker's confidence outweighed his capabilities, rest assured that the 20 minutes or so of material he screened more than lives up to expectations in a full 3-D screening this afternoon

SDCC: James Cameron reveals Avatar's genesis

James Cameron can pack a lot of interview into a short walk. In between his last scheduled print interview and his walk to the television press line at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, Cameron agreed to answer a few questions in an exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire about his upcoming 3-D film Avatar, which garnered rave reviews from fans.

About 6,500 fans in Hall H got their first peek at the 3-D footage from Cameron's long-awaited sci-fi epic, which Cameron had previously touted to 3-D industry professionals and theater owners. Now we know what the alien Na'vi look like on the planet Pandora. With this chance to follow up on the film's story and themes, Cameron explained specifically what he's still waiting to show us on Dec. 18 and even a tidbit about the video game tie-in.

Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. Following is an edited version of our exclusive Q&A with Cameron about his film.

i think it looks pretty good, a nice blend of sci-fi and fantasy like creatures. although, is he pandering to modern audiences? and is that a good or a bad thing?

                          3-D? I hope there's a non 3-D viewing. I've seen 2 movies in 3-D this year (what's it with kids and 3-D?) and I just don't like it.

What we saw at the 'Avatar Day' preview

The footage presented on "Avatar Day" Friday turned out to be the same scenes we reviewed at San Diego Comic-Con, with the small additional benefit that we were able to review scenes from James Cameron's upcoming sci-fi epic on actual 3-D IMAX screens, and the effect was demonstrably better.
