Sam Raimi to Direct "World of Warcraft" Movie

    official press release from Blizzard:

LOS ANGELES, Jul 22, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the eagerly-anticipated major motion picture based on Blizzard Entertainment(R)'s award-winning Warcraft(R) universe. Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content.

Raimi directed the Spider-Man trilogy, which has broken box-office records around the world and garnered five Academy Award(R) nominations. Known for his imaginative filmmaking style, richly drawn characters and offbeat humor, Raimi wrote and directed the cult classic, The Evil Dead and produced 30 Days Of Night. He most recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller, Drag Me To Hell.

"At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," said Raimi. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."

Charles Roven's producing talents were recently seen with last summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight, which grossed in excess of $1 billion, was nominated for eight Academy Awards(R) and won two. His body of work also includes the widely acclaimed Batman Begins and the sci-fi classic 12 Monkeys. Roven, with Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner, will be producing with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull, Legendary's Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni, Raimi and Raimi's producing partner Joshua Donen. Raimi's partner, Robert Tapert, will be an Executive Producer and Blizzard Entertainment's Senior Vice President of Creative Development, Chris Metzen, a Co-Producer.

This is certainly good news, esp. with Raimi at the helm one can expect the movie to be at least decent and fun, and hopefully dislodge the bad name typically associated with practically every single video games movie out there.

On the other hand, whether this adaptation can match the epic-ness of Lord of the Rings (as it rightfully should), is anybody's guess....
    "Yo, you wanna join SG-1?"

SDCC 09: Bruce Campbell Comments on Warcraft

Sam Raimi's go-to guy talks about whether he'll be in the WoW film.

An important question came up the moment Sam Raimi was announced as the director of the Warcraft movie – Who would Bruce Campbell be playing? As fans of the two well know, Raimi and Campbell's friendship goes back decades, and their onscreen collaborations are numerous, beginning with The Evil Dead. Even as Raimi's gone on to direct giant movies like Spider-Man, he almost always give Campbell a cameo of some sort.

          Warcraft Screenwriter Departs Project

Gary Whitta, the former editor-in-chief of PC Gamer who made waves last week when he announced that was "finished" with PC gaming after a hardware crash (only to later tell us that he since rethought his stance to neutral), has announced that he no longer the writer on the Warcraft movie. Whitta, in a post to the gaming forum Quarter To Three said that he had been working with Legendary Pictures and Blizzard for the past two years on the screenplay. However, with the announcement yesterday that Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was taking over the project, Whitta revealed that he was no longer on the movie.

Who's going to be monitoring Sam Raimi's Warcraft film

Now that news has broken that Sam Raimi will direct a movie based on the MMORPG World of Warcraft, executives at Blizzard tell SCI FI Wire that they'll keep a close eye on the movie's development.

"Even before we signed with Legendary in the last couple of years, we spent a lot of time trying to figure out how we were going to do a movie and how we would be able to maintain the level of involvement that was important to us, because if you don't have enough involvement, ... there's no guarantee that the production company that's making your movie is going to appropriately honor your intellectual property," Blizzard vice president Frank Pearce said in an exclusive interview at Blizzcon last week. "And our intellectual property is our lifeblood."

'Private Ryan' writer to pen 'Warcraft'

Saving Private Ryan writer Robert Rodat will pen the Warcraft movie for director Sam Raimi.

Speaking to MTV, Raimi confirmed the hiring of the Oscar-nominated screenwriter and noted that the video game adaptation would be an original story based on the World Of Warcraft universe.

"We would choose... something that encompasses lands and characters and storylines, and we would be true to it," Raimi said. "But our story may or may not be about one of those central characters."

He continued: "We want to be really faithful to the game. We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a World Of Warcraft adventure. Only obviously it's very different because it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture."

So the movie got some attention at BlizzCon and it seems likes it's really going to happen now. Bit of a shame in my opinion that they're moving away from an Alliance-centric story, but meh, could still be good. Here is some of the concept art for Draenor, Dalaran, Ironforge and Stormwind:
