    Strategy for the anciets

We all know the ancients were beat by the wraith because they were outnumbered. reasons are
    1. overconfident
    2. relied on getting more powerful tech
    3. drones have limited ammo

So the strategy is to develop a powerful energy weapon with relatively unlimited ammo. The answer Plasma beams like the Asgard weapons. Then they cant send warships alone travel in a pack. So they need small ships like three or four of them. With the plasma beams and one larger ship with drones. Then they must have a fighter wave like puddle jumpers put 10 on each ship. The smaller ships occupy the hive ships while the larger ship comes around with the drones.

I would counter your list with
    1. incompetent
    2. overestimated the superiority of their tech
    3. drones seem to a pack a lot of punch and are a good use of internal ship space

The outnumbered thing is probably overblown.

TBH we can't judge the Ancients war effort as it lasted 100 years and we know very little about what happened.
Robert Jastrow (self-proclaimed agnostic): "For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

The Ancients could have easily defeated the Wraith after Janus built the Aterro device. It would simply be a case of disabling the gate network and then activating the device while at the same time sending a signal to all of the Ancient ships that the Wraith would definately be able to intercept. The signal would carry the order to return to Atlantis for evac. The Wraith would gather a large number of hives and attempt to travel to Atlantis but would be destroyed. When the Ancient ships arrived back at Atlantis, they would be repaired, rearmed and sent out in groups to eliminate any remaining hives and cruisers before the Aterro device would be deactivated and the gate network restored. The Ancients could then regain control of most of the galaxy and flush out the last remaining Wraith to ensure final victory.

Aterro device a plot scheme to make the ancients seem a little less than completely incompetent.

The ancients don't seem like the kind of people who would commit genocide, They just don't.

think the USA in Vietnam. no matter how many were killed more kept coming.

The wraith had cloning ability that in a span of a couple of days could add thousands of new soldiers. Wraith ships have been shown to grow to full size in months.

Ancients ships may have had a 5 to 1 advantage. But the 6th and 7th ships destroyed them. The ancients weren't incompetent they were far to pacifist for that. They wouldn't fight unless they had to only go so far. The ancients would think twice about wiping out a planet to destroy and enemy. We wouldn't care.

Because the wraith sit on such a moral high horse what with the mass slaughter of human life, not only for their food (which is justifiable, if unpleasant) but for sport and simply to put down possible resistance.

It's war, and neutralization of the wraith means, aside from victory, a hell of a lot of lives saved and a lot of civilizations being allowed to run their course properly. Who knows what kinds of advancements could result?

Janus built the Attero device in secret; the Lanteans as a whole never knew it existed.

They tried it with the Assurans. Why not the Wraith?

I'm sure that if he came up with a viable way of using it he would have told them and persuaded them to try it.

The Asurans weren't truly considered sentient beings by the Lanteans; the Wraith were.

...and yet, the fact remains that they didn't know.

So the Ancients wouldn't even consider the Asurans as worthy of existence but would let a race like the Wraith who wouldn't think twice about wiping them out and treating the human life they created as livestock live?

As for them not knowing, that just means that Janus was more of a scientist than a military tactician.

The easiest way to beat the Wraith would be to sabotage their food supply. Forget about fighting them in a war, concentrate instead on holding them off while the majority of resources are devoted to some sort of hoffen like drug that makes humans inedible. If the hoffans could almost crack this with their very limited techbase the ancients surely could.

Develop it alongside an alternative non human food for the Wraith. When they start to starve bad enough the terms of their surrender will be to disarm themselves to the extent that they're no longer a serious threat and destroy all artificial cloning facilities. Once that's done we start to distribute the alternate food from ancient ships and facilities at first, then when we're satisfied they won't just restart the conflict, we turn it fully over to them.

Since they'll have no need to risk another war with us, as they now have their crucial need met, we should end up with some sort of mixed pegasus where ancients, humans and Wraith live, with the Wraith probably joining the alliance of four races before long. Given their obvious suitability for warfare not really shared by the others it's likely that would become their primary role in the alliance, it's defense force. Supported by the technology and resources of the other four races, plus their own not degraded as it has in the real timeline but advancing through prosperity instead, Wraith armies could pretty much gurantee the long term security of the alliance. The advanced biotech the Wraith bring in, once further developed by themselves and the others, might very well also end up helping both the Ancients and Asgard avoid their problems with plague and cloning degredation, though by this point it would of course be too late to actually save the MW ancient civilization. Their hacking talents might likewise be able to help the Asgard do something similar with the replicators as they did with the Asurans.

Basicaly the universe ends up a much nicer place. The Ancients don't fall, the alliance likely sticks together with the Wraith becoming the fifth race, the Goa'uld never come to power and renewed contact with Earth probably happens a lot sooner. Humanity works toward becoming the 6th race in a much less dangerous galaxy. As more and more ancients choose ascencion over remaining in the copereal plain, we're likely viewed as something akin to their children or successors by the other races, a young race still, but one with much potential.

A bit optomistic perhaps, but hardly impossible.

The Asurans weren't living things in the eyes of the Lanteans. The Lanteans just don't seem like the kind of beings to commit genocide, even if they are at war.

wow aren't you a racist. Who is to say wraith life isn't worth the say as a human's? Are the asgard inferior because they are shorter than us? or I know how about he Nox I bet since they refuse to fight they must be worthless too. Define worth, define freedom.

The wraith were doing what they needed to survive. They can't "wipe out" humanity with out killing themselves in the process Guess what? Cows out number humans because we need live stock to feed upon. To The wraith Humans were Cattle. nothing more. While it may be an incompatible viewpoint for us, and one that will prevent any peace from existing in between the two races. That doesn't make the wraith lives worth any less.

It also prevented the wraith from wholesale genocide of the human race as you don't kill off your food supply.

Try to look at from the wraith's point of view. The writers did, Sheppard has, Wier, has, Teyla Sums it up nice in season one. The wraith cull their Herd. You don't slaughter every last herd member unless a dangerous to you infection is breaking out. The hoffman virus is to the wraith as Mad Cow disease is to Humans.
