Best Sci Fi Movie Ever or Your favourite of all time?

As we are between seasons of almost everything, it allows the focus to go back to books and movies. So I thought I would start a discussion on our opinion of the best Sci-Fi movie of all time. I had the idea a while ago, but could not decide which I thought to be the best.

I had oh so difficult a time on this, and none of the new crop of movies make my list because, well, they are new, and have yet to be measured against the critical eye of time!

I think the best EVER are (this list is not in any particular order btw):

    2001 A Space Odyssey
    Blade Runner
    Alien
    Terminator
Star Wars (I will lump them all together)
    Back to the Future
    A Boy and His Dog
    ET
    Silent Running
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Planet of the Apes
    Soylent Green
    Road Warrior
    The Quiet Earth

On any one day, I would be likely to cite a different movie from the above list as my favorite. Each is most vivid in my mind versus all the other stuff. I think if there is one I am especially fond it would be Silent Running.

Very first Star Wars movie all those years ago. It just captivated me, and will always be the best one, imho (AS it originally was shown - NOT with all the CGI enhancements). It was perfect in so many ways...

I have to seriously think about my answer for a while. The original Planet of the Apes is the clear winner in my mind, but there are some serious other contenders I'd like to rank.

The first film that sprung to mind was Aliens, but then there's Star Wars episode IV - absolutely breathtaking when I saw it in the cinema as a nine year old with my dad back in 1977. Can't forget the first Alien and the rest of the original Star Wars trilogy, too. Oh, and there's also Blade Runner to name but a few.

I also have to give The Last Starfighter a special mention and Enemy Mine is another film I rate highly.

Ah yeah, I just noticed The Abyss in Digi's list. I just recently bought the two-disk special edition. Yet another memorable film.

The first time I saw the Matrix I was blown away, so that ranks up there with the best. The first scifi movie I saw was The Undiscovered Country at the cinema, I think I was about 9 or 10 at the time and that got me hooked on Star Trek and sci-fi. My other highlights include The Invasion, Fifth Element, Back to the Future, I am Legend, Starship Troopers, Serenity and The Island.

                In no particular order:

                Classic Star Wars
                Star Trek: First Contact
The Abyss (editor's cut only, the ending actually makes sense)
                Aliens
                Terminator
                The Fifth Element
                Robocop
                Blade Runner
Planet of the Apes (original first movie only, not sequels or the remake)
                Dr. Strangelove (if it counts)
King Kong (original - pioneered stop-motion animation and miniature models in ways that were only superseded by the computer-controlled camera runs in Star Wars and later CGI)

The Matrix is probably my all-time favourite sci-fi flick ever. A seminal film that organically combined different genres into the overall storyline eg. martial arts wirework, Japanese animation techniques, and post-structuralist double talk. The first film that I came out of the cinema completely blown away in speechless awe.

                  Others that I've appreciated

                  Galaxy Quest
Planet of the Apes (The original that is. Has aged well.)
                  The Fifth Element
                  Total Recall
The old Star Wars trilogy with Luke, Han and Leia
Serenity... Cause I loved the family. Cause Firefly was the best tv show that never got a chance.
                  Dune (1984)

I had thought about the Matrix, but although I very much enjoyed the movie, and I would to some extent agree that it has an outsized impact, it just did not resonate with me so much as to make my list of best ever.

I see Galaxy Quest, Serenity and The Fifth Element mentioned by several, and I certainly agree they are all great Sci-Fi movies. They would all be in my top 25 I think. Just not the best ever.

I am quite surprised no one else has some of the older flicks such as Silent Running or The Quiet Earth. Maybe so few have seen them given how old they are?

I am a major Star Wars nerd, so that obviously! Not the prequels though. I have minor appreciations for them, but that is it. My love is for the original trilogy. And Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. And I guess prequel Yoda was cool. But that is it.

Tough one. Hmm. Well, here are a couple that would easily end up on some sort of favorites list:

Star Wars (mainly OT. Amazing movies that will always remain some of my personal favorites)

Blade Runner (A masterpiece... the atmosphere, the characters, Voight Kampff test, great stuff)

First Contact (Exciting. Well written. Borg. Pretty much perfect... the new one is pretty great as well... )

Back To The Future trilogy (RUN FOR IT MARTY!!!)

                        Serenity (Great end to Firefly)

Dark City (kind of like Blade Runner in that it's a movie that'll always have something new for you when you watch it again)

The Thing (probably the best Sci-Fi Horror movie of all time. The special effects were amazing for their time)

oh gee.. to many movies.. to many good sf.. so I decide to divide the list in parts:

IMHO the very best sf movies are:
                            Terminator
                            Blade Runner
                            The Abyss
                            Forbidden Planet
                            Minority Report
                            Tron
                            THX 1138
                            Fahrenheit 451
                            Alien
                            (R. Scott only in here)

                            my personal favs go to:
                            Dune
                            Gattaca
                            Stargate
                            - obviously :>
                            The Abyss
                            Alien
(that includes all movies 1-4 - different directors, different styles)
                            Contact
                            Sphere
                            Solaris
(that new one, not Tarkowski's shallow version)
                            Starship Troopers
                            Equilibrium
                            Sunshine
                            Red Planet
                            Star Trek - any, all
                            Mission to Mars
                            Event Horizon
                            Screamers

I listed only those movies that I've seen and that are worth for watch them - didn't includet such 'great' movies like Wing Commander
And I didn't listed Star Wars cos I don't consider them as sf - more like pure fatasy, it has (to me) more in common with magic, religion and that sort of things instead of pure technology and science.
'- Your weapons are no match for ours! People of Mars, surrender!
                            - Um, this isn't Mars. This is Earth.
                            - Earth? Earth-with-nuclear-weapons Earth?
                            - Yes.
                            [long pause] - Friend!!'

Favorite all time movie(s)? I'd have to go with the original Star Wars trilogy. I also love Outland, the Last Starfighter, Terminator, Stargate, and Serenity. I'm sure I'll be able to add to the list, given some more time to think on it.
