Your losing your touch PG15. First Pandora and know Madwelshboy:P

The title kind of gives it away.
1)Something to do with an off-world's religion
2)Character A gets into legal trouble. The problem is that Character A has always been morally questionable. Anyway Character A asks someone on the Destiny to have faith that he didn't do it:P

Anyway those are my two theories at the moment

Or it will portray a character who is struggling with their faith, possibly questioning it because they're out there and under pressure. :P

Maybe its something to do with an actual religion, like say Christianity or Islam, etc. maybe one of the members of the team is one of those or another religion (or maybe there's multiple religions represented on the show). If the producers, as was indicated in recent news headlines, really are trying to represent humanity in all its diversity, then maybe SGU will be the first Sci-fi show to feature a person of a major (NON-fictional) faith - to my knowledge.

That's what I think it'll be. Maybe Someone is trying to convince people that they need to pray to escape this instead of fighting to survive, and Rush has to go over and slap the silly out of them...

Tuesday was a quietly productive day spent helping to break a story (a possible episode #12) with a new freelancer. This one promises to be another interesting studying conflict and character.

Remember in that rather dodgy second trailer, one of the sentances that appeard said "trust is a mistake".
The episode could easily be about the crew having FAITH in Rush(or somebody like that), just for Rush(or someone like that) to screw them over because of his `ulterior motves`.

Spose the episode would probably be called TRUST, but FAITH and TRUST basicly mean the same thing don't they.

Just a theory.

Let's just avoid the flamboyantly-dressed, glowing eyes, over-the-top villains, shall we? ;)

But I like the flamboyzntly-dressed, glowy eyed, over-the-top aliens!

So what if we have our first series of alien possesions of the crew?
They have to end the end solve x prolbem by haveing faith that someone is who he/she says they are.

Maybe it's about the characters having to find faith in their own abillity to survive.

I suspect it may deal with the several different definitions of faith (i.e. the religious definition, the colloquial "trust" definition).

Just because the title is 'Faith' doesn't mean it will deal with religious beliefs. Faith could also deal with trust as the two work hand and hand at times...

Still though...So what if they show a character either struggling or embracing their faith on the show... It only adds diversity. As what BW and RCC said, they want to represent the human race as best as they could...I would say that focusing on a character of faith (not radical of course, but reasonable as a normal human being) falls in that area of representation...

It's a good thing it wasn't an episode of Atlantis with this title, given the presence of space-vampires.

Update:

Carl was on a location scout to Widgen Park all morning as he and director Will Waring continue prep on Faith. This will mark our first return to Widgen since Atlantis’s fourth season when we shot Harmony there. I was on hand for most of the festivities on that one – also, coincidentally, with Will. It’s about an hour’s drive there and another hour’s drive back, through winding back country roads surrounded by dense forest. “Yep,”I remember telling Larry, my driver “This is great corpse-dumping territory.” I believe that was the same day a bear meandered across our path, oblivious to us, before disappearing into the trees. Come to think of it, years earlier, when SG-1 shot in the same location, a bear sighting kept actor Chris Judge holed-up in his trailer, much to the delight of his fellow castmates. Someone please remind me to warn Carl to pack his bear spray or, at the very least, give him some worst case scenario advice. Now I forget. If he runs into a bear, should he be playing dead or rubbing its belly to calm it? Also, I seem to remember someone telling me that you should run AT a bear, making as much noise as possible, because they are easily spooked. Does that sound right? Any bear experts out there?

I just googled define:nexus and among the results are the following:
"Nexus is a Toronto-based percussion ensemble..." well we all know that Toronto is a cover story for aliens who've moved to Earth.
"NEXUS is a joint Canada-United States program designed to let pre-approved, low-risk travelers cross the US-Canada border quickly. ..." Which really means friendly aliens moving to and from Earth via the Stargate, right?
"Nexus is a bi-monthly alternative news magazine. It covers geopolitics and conspiracy theories; health issues, including alternative medicine; future science; the unexplained, including UFOs; Big Brother; and historical revisionism. ..." Aha! That explains everything.
"The NEXUS reusable rocket was a concept design created in the 1960s by a group at General Dynamics" And that sorta ties in.
"Nexus or IEEE-ISTO 5001-2003 is a standard debugging interface for embedded systems." Look, more technobabble!

Also, nexus is a noun which means "the means of connection between things linked in series" Great, now I've got to get my mind out of the gutter.

I don't think this has been posted...

Science Fiction has the ability to challenge people about issues within society without being "in your face" about it, how do you feel about that?

Alania Huffman: That's my favourite thing about the genre of sci fi. It think we have an ability to reach a huge audience and take these questions that we could experience; race, religion, cultural boundaries and it won't offend anybody because we're talking about aliens and we're not talking about specific religions. We do have an episode coming up called Faith and it explores the idea of faith and possibly the Ancients as saviours. We're not talking about a Messiah of one particular religion, we're speaking about the idea of believing that something greater than us exists and I think that's a really great topic to talk about and not to go over to war over. So yeah, it's absolutely my favourite part of the genre. We are military based as well and we've got to watch yourself in that regard, but I think it's safe to say that you can sort of challenge that and I think we see a little bit of that too, again in Faith when some of us are like "what are we doing?" you know, "why are we here?" and you kind of go back and forth, you then have the realisation that we need a ruler we can't have a majority vote, it's not going to work that way, but does it? And I think that transcends to a lot of the issues that we have going on in the world right now.

Are you that insecure in your religious beliefs that you can't take a show taking a few jabs at a religion?

Small update:

Lisa writes: “[...] What has been your favourite episode to work on and if you can answer, why?”

BJS: Oooo that’s tough one. They’ve all been a blast, especially Air and all the stuff we did in New Mexico. But Life really meant a lot to me – I love what Matt went through in that episode and the stuff I got to do as an actor. It’s a real heartbreaker. We recently wrapped an episode called Faith and I thought it played very well, and the location we worked at was breathtaking.

Not my favorite thing to see, but I watch all sci-fi/fantasy TV shows (and books I read) as if they are their own universe so whatever they do doesn't bother me too much either way. I find taking this approach makes it easier to go with the flow.

That being said, I have always loved how the Stargate "god's" AKA Goa'uld filled the roles of actual mythical figures and such and at the same time I have been glad they didn't try to cast Jesus, Budah, Mohamed or some other "Major" religious figure as an alien!

I'm interested to see where they go with this episode!

Update!

A lot of wonderful Tamara moments throughout the back half, but Faith, episode 13, is the episode that fans of the character (and fans of actress Alaina Huffman in particular) should really look forward to.

---

Faith, episode 13, in particular offers us a better understanding of [Lt. Matthew Scott's] selflessness and willingness to self-sacrifice for the greater good.

As several of you pointed out, the show is called “Stargate: Universe” so you want to see us make use of the gate. Well, some interesting gate use upcoming in the back half of season one and into season two which goes hand in hand with another fan request: “More aliens!” and “More alien worlds!” Done and done, in the case of the former sooner, and the in the case of the latter just a tad later. Space, Faith, Lost, and Sabotage come to mind.

Q&A with Patrick Gilmore

65. Which actor or actress on SGU would you like more screentime with? (PBMom)

PG: There was a scene in ‘Faith’ that had to be removed for pacing, in which Jamil and I would have had a funny exchange. I was looking forward to that. Jamil is an actor I watch with awe. He never reads a line the way you expect it. I’m also curious to see every specific relationship develop between Volker and the rest of the cast; some friends, some rivals. There’s so much opportunity with such a big cast.

after seeing the new trailer I want to see this episdoe right now :)

The mystery of this episode and of Pain does indeed draw me too... From the trailer -

I'm actually thinking the giant obelisk we see is in this episode. There's a shot of the shuttle flying near it, followed by a later shot of the shuttle loaded with Destinites landing on a foresty-looking world. "I'm thinking we ain't the first ones here" or something like that is said by Greer. And interviews and teasers say that this episode will have on-location stuff (That means offworld), and Alaina Huffman mentioned something about worshipping the Ancients...

"We do have an episode coming up called Faith and it explores the idea of faith and possibly the Ancients as saviours"

So I'm thinking some aliens are all worshippy over the Ancients, and they built the obelisk, and then our crew are a little stumped by the idea...

But that's just my rambling theory for this episode. Either way, it's an interesting concept.

EllieVee

That's possible. We've seen 'Ancestor' worship in Pegasus before but maybe there's a miraculous cure of some sort.

PG15

Perhaps whoever built it got in contact with one of the Seeder ships, found out that Destiny was coming, and started waiting for the day that it will arrive.

But then they started dying out, so they built the Obelisk as a way to tell those on the Destiny that they once existed, and that they had waited for her.

Cos there's nothing that says 'message' like an obelisk, I think.

PG15
March 13th, 2010, 11:51 PM
Obviously it's not JUST an obelisk. There's probably more to it. Perhaps there's writing on the surface, or better yet, it's actually a data storage...thing.

An obelisk is just easier to detect; it won't get covered by vegetation.

It's also cooler looking. :p

We're not talking about a Messiah of one particular religion, we're speaking about the idea of believing that something greater than us exists and I think that's a really great topic to talk about and not to go over to war over. http://www.moviehole.net/200920239-s...-universe-cast

I must say I a bit disappointed. Faith was the episode I was most interested in but this kind of takes the edge off it. Ancients have often be seen as saviors since SG1 (not by our 'heroes' but anyway) and it is difficult to see how this ep could give something new into SG world.

I hoped Faith was about Scott, his growth as a religious person and how it affects, in good and bad, to people around him. That had been relatively new in SG world because as far as I know, no one of main characters have had religious belief that have had any noticeable effect of his/hers choices or relationships with other people. All Earth humans have been more or less non-religious and Earth has always been showed very neutral and (don't feel offended by my not that perfect choice of word, but) sensible.

I think we all know that is not the case, and I feel we should stop stripping fictional characters from their religions if we want to make them feel like real persons. It is a bit risky because some viewers are bound to feel offended even if Jesus, Buddha or whoever Big is as much as mentioned and also not telling the religious status of characters kind of give him/her one degree of freedom more. I mean, if I want to see Sheppard as sworn atheist, nothing in his demeanor stops me. If I want to see him as a catholic, or a Buddhist, or good old 'I couldn't care less' agnostic, same thing. But at the same time this limits chances of storytelling and exploration of human mind and behavior.

The other thing I was hoping to see in Faith was an intelligent alien race that finds religional constructions impossible to understand beyond purely intellectual way. This would be just purely interesting - some people say that humans are the only animals who can be religious, and if we take the concept to sci-fi, interesting stuff is bound to happen!

By "some degree" I meant that we are at least encountering a post industrial culture that understands engineering, concrete and rebar. I imagine we're going to find something a little more impressive, but at the very least we'll find that.

----------------------------------------- -----------------------------

I agree about feeling a tinge of disappointment finding out that we're going to see the Ancients as some kind of gods again, but I'm going to keep an open mind and hope for the best. Usually when my expectations are low I get surprised so I'll be secretly hoping that happens! :D

By "some degree" I meant that we are at least encountering a post industrial culture that understands engineering, concrete and rebar.

You actually don't need concrete and rebar to get a nice obelisk - there is a very nice obelisk in Paris that Napoleon picked up in Egypt (you know how those things go, conquer, steal a bit, go home and have lunch) - solid stone. Whether you would consider ancient Egypt to be a "post-industrial" culture depends on your definition - but you can make a pretty darn impressive obelisk without rebar!

More info:
Obelisk of Luxor, a pink granite monolith 23 m (73 tt) high and weighing 220 tons. It is 3300 years old and decorated with hieroglyphics exalting the reign of Ramses II.

Edited to add: I was wrong about Napoleon (sorry!) - apparently, the obelisk was a gift to the French king Charles X.

At AT&T U-verse (http://uversetv.att.yahoo.com/wra/uverse/):

Stargate Universe - Faith

Depression and hopelessness continues to spread amongst the passengers until the ship unexpectedly drops out of FTL next to a lush, habitable planet, and many of them begin to believe that staying there is preferable to returning to Destiny.

Here is the episode summary from http://tv.ign.com/objects/067/067809.html:

Dwindling supplies, tedious routines, and low morale, continue to plague the crew of the Destiny, when suddenly, the ship drops out of FTL and enters the orbit of an uncharted star with only one planet in its solar system. But, for the first time, the countdown clock doesn't activate.

Dr. Rush struggles to determine why Destiny has no record of this star system while Col. Young directs Lt. Scott and a small team to shuttle down to the planet's surface on a fact finding mission. Upon landing, everyone is amazed to discover that the atmosphere and terrain are idyllic. Relishing the sunshine, fresh air, clean water and abundance of food, many are reluctant to return to the ship, believing that providence has intervened.

It would be a difficult choice for many people, I think, after being trapped aboard the Destiny for so long, to suddenly find themselves in such a beautiful and comforting place. Of course, deciding to stay on the planet would likely mean that they'd give up any chance of getting back to Earth. But they probably feel at this point that staying on the Destiny may not guarantee that they'll find a way back, either. I wonder if some will choose to stay on this planet, or if they will discover that it's too good to be true? I also wonder why the planet's not on Destiny's charts.

The Obelisk in France is made (from what I've read) of 2 solid pieces of granite and as you said, is only 73 feet tall.

The one in the picture I've seen extends from a valley surrounded by Mountains to higher than the mountain peaks, it looks to be hundreds if not thousands of feet tall. The engineering challenges increase exponentially in building and erecting such a structure of that size and in such a location. I guess we'll just have to see for sure how tall it is. The image link I'll post below makes it look to be at least 1000 ft. (if not taller).

Actually, I'm speculating, as the Destiny will be traveling to a new galaxy soon, and will cross the gap between galaxies, I'm guessing/speculating that Destiny will give or wants to provide the opportunity to its occupants to get resources, relax etc. before making the trip between galaxies. And maybe, as it has been speculated that this planet was created by the Ancient seeder ships for this purpose, it is possible?

Anyways, I'm probably wrong, but I'd love to see how Destiny would approach the planet and start sucking in water, or dive into the ocean, or would start repairing itself before crossing the void between galaxies? Or is this too soon?

Dear Dr Rush

You're out in the universe's boondocks. Space is big, really big, bigger than big and then some. Logically, and try using some logic son cos you're a scientist 'n' all, Destiny won't have visited every single one so you don't have to feel at a loss. That horrible Colonel Young's really screwed up your logic circuits. Come over to the Rush thunk thread. You'll feel better immediately.

That line is probably something like Young asks why they've dropped out of FTL and Rush says, 'What, am I answer man?' No wait, that's McKay. ;) Some episode summaries are just whacked.

For some reason, I think we have a...

Black hole on our hands. We need a reason for the crew to go back onto the Destiny, and an explanation for why the Destiny doesn't have a countdown clock this time - a black hole interfering with both? If the kids stay on the planet, they die in the hole. Thus, the crew bands together and manoeuvres the Destiny away somehow, saving the day!

That, or deadly radiation in conjunction with the giant obelisk...

Uncharted star? Unknown planet? Seeder ship didn't visit? Human life sustaining unknown planet? WHAAA?

But seriously what if it's all a super elaborate trap set by the smurfs to hit destiny while she's weak from a lot of people traveling to said planet. [/

Either that or I believe there's a bit in the little post-episode "here's whats happening in the next episode" mini-montage [Spoiler]where Chloe and Scott are arguing about leaving the planet. Chloe doesn't want to and Scott is trying to convince her. Maybe the planet has a drug like effect and people are addicted to being there?

Or maybe the big surprise will be that there will be a stargate on the planet after all...

You know, no one will ever believe that the characters will stay on the planet, 'cause we all know there's another season and a whole bunch of episodes. It will be just like Light and Darkness again. People will complain again about that...

Oh, you got my hopes up with the "I don't think this clip has been shared yet" part. The sneak peek's been on syfy since just after Divided aired, actually. And it is pretty hilarious - classic Greer moment. :D

Greer eats kiwi.
TJ: We don't even know if it's poisonous!
Greer: We will.
Greer is my favorite character! :)

The space kiwis are good for the libido. Things'll get quite raunchy on the planet.

What is wrong with Syfy and their trailer? Im currently watching Destination Truth(good show actually, first time watching) and the SGU trailer came on for Faith and it had Great Quality! Yet online the trailer's quality is so bad. Why?

Yeah, but they can look through the window to see his dead, dangling arm.

Update!

Over on his ever-entertaining blog, writer Denis McGrath offers a rundown of his freelance experience on SGU’s first season. About this time last year, Denis delivered some very intriguing story ideas over the course of a phone pitch, demonstrating a strong story sense and, most importantly, a clever SF mindset.

On the strength of that initial conversation, we flew him over to Vancouver where we spent the day spinning one of his ideas, a story that would eventually become episode 13, Faith. As Denis explains in his blog entry, after two drafts Carl Binder ended up doing a pass on the script. The result – one of the strongest episodes of the back half.

Check out Denis’ hair-raising account of the experience here:

Question - I'm visiting friends who are TV-less - how soon will tonight's episode "Faith" go up on Hulu?

Thanks in advance for your help.

According to the disclaimer on HULU: The first three episodes will be available the day after air; subsequent episodes will be on a delay.

So you should be okay for Faith. After Faith, it will be a week wait. :(

Not sure of the exact time, but it will be there Saturday morning.

**Edit** - Morgana knows more, that stinks about the delay. Not sure if it still does but a few times it repeated on Sunday night.

Oh, that would be nice - then I could maybe watch it tomorrow! Otherwise, I'll just have to wait until I get home on Monday, which isn't too bad.

Thanks!
