View Full Version : How bloody exspensive are the dvds!?

I just looked on HMV. One box set, i.e, season one box set, will cost you £90. NINETY POUNDS! twenty two episodes, same as Stargate, but still costs more.
How many special features are on the box set? Bloody Atlantis box sets, at release are £40-50 odd quid, season one of farscape, costs £90.

seven years after season one of farscape was released, still listed at £90. Man, prices like that I'l never be able to afford the series. Seems the prices dont go down over time. Annoying.

Where are you looking at Auto? You can get the whole series for close to that from amazon UK and one season is 27.89.

Yep, that is the main reason. I've said this before - there is demand for this show still out there, and Sony needs to realize that and start producing these seasons since they own the rights. Being that the show is celebrating it's 10th Anniversary since first airing, this would have been a perfect opportunity IMO.

i agree fifth...i have seen 2 eps online and i want to see more.usually when a big aniversery comes up they release a new dvd collection but aparently one of the greatest scifi shows doesnt get that honor.you also have to remeber that me ,you and alot of other live in the states so the amazon.uk dvds are expensive and also we would need to get the region free dvd players which im sure cost quite a bit of money.

Oh it's because they stopped making them? Wow, never knew that. Guess I better suck it up and buy them at this price, before they become even shorter in supply and costing more!

I was blessed when I bought the 4 seasons from JB hifi here in Sydney Australia. I walked in and got the 4 seasons for $27.95 Aus each season, that is about 12 british pounds. I also found The Peacekeeper wars at Big W for $5 Aus.

The Farscape DVD are unfortunately notoriously expensive. You can sometimes find them on ebay for cheaper though. If you do that though keep in mind the different DVD regions.

It just ticks me off so much that the Farscape DVDs aren't more available to potential new fans. It should not be difficult to enjoy this show.

It is and can be annoying but I know here in the States (and maybe in some Canadian cities as well) Farscape fans either donated or pushed (gently and politely) their local libraries into getting or accepting donations of the DVDs. There is also video rental. So it's not IMPOSSIBLE for folks to find and watch FS on DVD, some people just have to be willing to work for it, or at least, ask the right FS fans how to get the DVDs. I have a fellow The Closer fan who's interested in checking the show out. I've pointed her to check with her local library and to check with NetFlix.

I'm not sure what Sony's deal is unless they really haven't worked a new deal with Henson, et al to produce more DVDs for the masses.

Just get the region two DVD's. There are about £25 per season on amazon.co.uk, which even when converted to US is way cheaper than you'll even get a used set on ebay. Plus I personally like the R2 sets more. Not quite as feature-heavy as the starburst sets but better than the original ADV releases. Commentaries are a bit mismatched, each region having it's exclusives (even R4), but the extra cost for the R1 commentaries isn't worth it unless you're shooting for the starburst sets with even more exclusives. Plus the R2's just look cooler...box and menu designs are superb.

It's a shame Starburst and R2 have their exclusives. Forcing me to get them both complete. Getting ahold of all the Starburst sets is currently hell.

I think the problem with Sony is they'll never release anything until they have ALL of Farscape's rights. As of right now I believe ADV still has the licence for the last season or two and are just letting them expire.

And truthfully, should ADV ever have had them in the first place? I always found it strange looking at their site, being 99% anime and all.

Ouch! Okay, so I probably paid over a 150 for season 1 (buying them one frelling disc at a time!). But if you go to used sellers on amazon, half.com, and ebay, you should be able to find some deals. Seasons three and four often sell for under $50. So don't worry, if you already have season 1 and 2, things should get easier from there. :) I also found that prices on ebay were slightly lower in the past few months (probably recession related).

But you will love your seasons! It's such a great series. Just really, really phenomenal. And it's so much nicer to have them all so you can watch them straight through. I would hate to have to watch them out of order.

Farscape would definitely be harder to understand fully if watched out of order. Episodes build off of what has come before more than most shows.

make sure if your looking for the Region 1 dvds you try to get the Starburst Edition because the original release was frelling expensive to begin with (about $120 US a season if I remember correctly ). When the Starburst Edition first came out it was half that or less if you found them on sale.

Only problem now is many of the starburst sets are considered rare. 2.1, 2.3 and 4.2 are relatively easy to find and cheap to buy, $10-20 at most on ebay. But the others range from 35-120! Sets like 3.1, 3.3, 4.1, 4.3 and the four-disc versions of any season one set sell as if they are made of gold.

I've been slowly grabbing them when I see them for cheap, usually from guys selling who don't realize they are worth much more, but in the end you'll end up paying faaar more than you probably want to. Especially when you consider these sets were originally released as a sort of "budget" version of the big 149.99 MSRP box sets.

In fact, getting all the big ADV box sets is cheaper. 3.1 and 3.3 starburst sets alone run about $100 each these days. $200 for 2/3 of a single season. Defines travesty.

I envy anyone who was smart enough to pick these up back when they were 20 each. I made the mistake of waiting thinking ADV would eventually box them all and sell as a single set or four individual season sets...

My Starburst editions (seasons 2 and 3) were decently priced (used off of ebay, but sold as a complete season). I agree that these can save you quite a bit of money. The problem is that it's a game you play with ebay sellers, and it takes some patience to find someone who will sell a complete Starburst set. It worked for me, but it is very tricky.

Dang! Guess I was wrong with my theory that the prices were going down due to the economy (though that is how I snagged disc 8 of season 1 in order to finish off my collection last month).

You're right about the volumes that are considered "rare." I saw disc 8 of season 1 sell for as much as $50-$60... and that's only two episodes! I want to know who decides that some of them are "rare" and others aren't. Because sometimes there are terrific deals, and sometimes they are absolutely outrageous. But like I said, it's a game. You win some, you lose some. Sometimes you get a decent deal, but sometimes you don't.

I know they were expensive for the same needless reason as the US. Each release only had 4 episodes and when they eventually boxed them they priced it similar to what all the individuals would have added up to. Thankfully it didn't hold. Despite the "Limited Editon" stamp on all of the boxes. I guess prices went down when everyone figured out they were not limited at all (Thankfully, they are great sets for a great price). That massive "Ultimate" set is really cool, too.

Although those big UK releases with the mechandise and concept art included are pretty expensive and hard to find. I think they only pressed 5000 or so of each set.

it helps that $:£ shot down from about 2:1 to 1.4:1 in about a year :P

oh and don't be fold it's still expensive compared to other ultimate box sets, for example the x-files (9 seasons + 1st movie) is only £100 and buffy (7 seasons) is only $60, so paying £100 of only 4 seasons and a miniseries is still pricey, relatively. comparitively it should only be ~£50.

I've never had the problem with Chinese copies, but that's interesting. I did have trouble distinguishing between the Australian and the North Americans ones though (Australian copies sell for cheaper, as a general rule, so I almost bought the wrong one).

That's a great deal. Before eventually buying the invidual UK boxes I was bidding on one of those Ultimate boxes and it went up to about £130...luckily someone outbid me at the last moment because I realized they were selling for much cheaper on amazon.co.uk and the uk portal of ebay. Uh oh, just re read the description to check.
The cover picture shown is a stock photo for illustrative purposes only, and is usually taken from Ebay's database. Occasionally the actual item may be slightly different.

That starts to reek of fake merchandise. But I don't see why they'd do that, seeing as they seem otherwise legitimate for everything they've sold.

This is why I am never going to risk trying to buy season 1 (it's the only season I don't have)...let alone ever buy anything else off of ebay. I'll just keep on hoping that Sony will finally get off it's butt and release S1 on dvd again. I just don't trust sellers on the internet that I don't know.

Ebay will give you your money back. Just email them directly if the dispute function isn't working. Just be sure that the arrival "window" is over, you should have been given a set of dates. Nothing worse than sending a nasty letter and getting a package in the mail the next day.

I don't know, I've never really had an issue with ebay. Just stick to highly rated sellers, same with amazon. Never buy from someone with hidden feedback. I passed on a 19.99 4-disc 1.1 starburst set the other day because the seller had zero feedback.

Just got the 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 starburst DVD's from ebay this week at relatively fair prices. Not too far from the original MSRP actually. Got lucky on those. At this point I'm not holding my breath for Sony. I'll be all over a bluray release but chances are their DVD's, if ever released, won't be nearly as well-produced as ADV's were. Many of Sony's DVD sets are downright barebones.

I ordered the complete dvd set from Amazon UK some weeks ago for 97£ (not the marketplace), but they cancelled my order because they could no longer obtain one.

I'm hoping that they will republish the box as soon as the webisodes are being aired, because like this whole thread says: they are just too rare and expensive.

they are getting even more expensive,..i looked at the Starburst Editions on amazon,..
which are only 7 episodes per collections so three collections per season, and heres the prices.

Season one set 1 is like 80$$!!!!
Season one set 2 is like 60-70$$
but the other seasons are like 25-35$$ a piece makes no sense.....
im very disappointed at how much they cost and by how the company who own the rights treats this very beloved series.
Scaper fans are getting the shaft at every turn... FRELL!!!!!!!

Last year when I was looking for season 1 it was $300 CAD at amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/Farscape-The-Complete-Season-One/dp/B00006G8ES/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1240619597&sr=1-2). I just checked again and it's down $30. I ended up trying to get the starburst editions, but they aren't that cheap either. $150-$75 per vol, 3 vol per season... Or $25-$50 for Season X Collection X, two collections per season... Gets expensive. Not to mention I couldn't find vol.2. And they are all frelled up. Some are season 3 volume 1, some season 2 Collection 2, some are Starburst Edition Vol. 8, some are 2 disks per collection - 2 collections per vol (4 disks in total) and some have side a and b (2 disks total)... Gets bloody confusing. I have to try and remember the order of the episodes or check a guide and write it down so I know which disks to play when.

buffy (7 seasons) is only $60
Nice. I paid $60 + a piece for each season when they first came out.

Re-releasing the show along with the webisodes would be a great idea. Hopefully somebody actually listens to the wants of the fans.

Well technically it's not ADV selling at that price. The MSRP of the sets is 24.99 or something. It's the owners who realize they are rare that are gouging. There is something particularly rare about the season one and three sets. 4-disc season one sets are probably the rarest, I've only managed to get 1.3 in that form at a reasonable price. The season three sets are sometimes even more expensive that the season one sets, even though they seem to be less rare.

If you're looking to buy Starburst sets, the key is patience. Sadly you have to sit on your hands and wait for good deals to come one set at a time. After about 6 weeks now of actively searching for deals on amazon, ebay or half.com, I've only manged 9 of the 4-disc sets, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3. And even at "good" prices, I've paid at least $250 for just those. That's probably what you would've paid at the store for all 12 when they were originally cheap at $20 each.

Well, after some research I found out that the DVD's are re-appearing in Australian dvd stores. For example, EzyDVD shows the new boxes being available as of early next month. (http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/792266) Unfortunately, no collection boxset with the complete series, BUT individual seasons at only 35 AU$! That's not even 20 euros for me (or 25 US$)!

Guess I'll wait a few months for this to come over to Europe! :indeed:

to update you guys, paypal decided in my favour, which means the seller was in the wrong for not supplying them, of course.

Except they were "unable" to obtain the funds and will "try again" in the future. Currently disputing it, otherwise I'm out £86.

How much does it cost to get international post? Because you guys should consider buying in Australia!!!

Seasons of Farscape (when you can find them) are generally about $25 Australian dollars...which, if I'm right is less than $20 American dollars

My whole collection (including peacekeeper wars) cost me $110 AUD...thats somewhere near $80 American (or a lot less...I dont know what rthe exchange rate is atm)

problem there is I think Australian DVDs are encoded differently. To put it basically, a DVD from Australia might not play on a UK DVD player. Just like American DVD's wont play on a UK DVD player.

Yep, but you can buy a region free player and still come out ahead on the amount you spend.

I don't quite fancy buying a sub par DVD player for one set of DVDs. My current player upscales DVDs to superior quality. Besides that DVD player would only be used for that one boxset.

Do you have something against amazon?

Just keep checking back. I think they only have 1 in every now and again so if you check every other day you might get lucky. That's how I got mine. I'd been putting it off for ages because it was too expensive and then saw it on there at the right price, though about it for a couple of hours and decided to get it, by which time someone else had bought it! Then a week or so later they had another and I bought it straight away.

and where did you get the idea that I hate amazon? I hate their prices.

Also my DVD player cost £600 is hdmi, a blu ray player, and upscales all standard DVD's to as high a quality as possible.

No way I'm replacing that with some region free DVD player.

Because their prices were and are much lower than HMV prices you were upset about in your OP, yet you seemed to be ignoring them as an option.

Too bad you can't enjoy both worlds for the player, I realize space is an issue for many, as well as the look of having multiple players. I have an HD-DVD player I use for general use which upscales excellently, so I understand that, but I also have a region free player that does the job nearly as good (better in certain instances, as it has a better zoom function for non-anamorphic titles.) But yeah, if you are only interested in Farscape as a different region title, then even a nice $50 player is probably too much.

I needed one so I could get all those fantastic UK productions they seem to hate releasing over here, or when then do release them, they are sub-par versions.

I enjoyed the episode commentaries on the Starburst sets, but I honestly don't think they are worth the current crazy prices. So your best bet is probably to go on and get the eps from Itunes and save yourself the money, imo.

Doubt it will come to Blu Ray, if it isnt selling well enough to keep producing the DVD's, they'l hardly spend millions upgrading it for a blu Ray release, to then manufacture loads of blu Ray discs.

Side note, I finally got my money back for the DVD's, so I'm soon going to buy the DVD's proper.

Yeah, Blu would be nice. I just wish Sony would re-release them. I like the Starburst sets, but there is no need for three extra discs per season. I'm pretty sure they could cut the size down from 12 discs per season to 5 or 6 and not lose a lick of quality on the video.

ADV seemed to be pulling a tactic (like A&E does for it's shows) of making bloated releases with unnecessary discs to justify a higher price.

I think you overestimating how much it will cost them to produce a bluray release of Farscape. Look at the garbage currently out. Who in their right mind would buy up obscure cartoon shows made in the 60s and 70s or cancelled tv shows that only lasted 11 episodes, etc., yet the big studios keep releasing them. It may take a while but I believe you'll see Farscape on bluray within a couple of years.

I missed another sale of the ultimate collections at Zavvi.co.uk, but after being marked as 'sold out' for a while, Sendit.com along with some others show the boxset as being available again, though, "Usually dispatched within a month". Not too expensive either, around £85. I already ordered mine!

A lot of people may, because they loved the show when they were kids and want their children or grandchildren watch them. I know I'd like to watch some older shows.

It may have been mentioned in this thread already, but JB HI-FI in Australia has each season for about AU$38.99 each on their site, http://www.jbhifionline.com.au. AU$38.99 is about USD 31.41 and GBP 19.05. Instore it's a little cheaper, around AU$29.99.
