    MAC guns

ive been playin around with the idea of mass accelerater cannon for stargate ships. what do u guys think?

    A rail gun?
    Wraith ships are giant lobsters.

more like a Mass Driver. but kinetics are weak against shields

I'd actually say the opposite myself going by what those supergate pieces did to those Ha'taks. Mass driver's should work fairly well.

If you could make a giant coil/railgun that fired slugs the size of those pieces, or smaller ones at greater speeds (which is obviously more practical) you should be able to likewise 1 shot some Ha'taks.

It might not work so well vs Ori ships though, since their shields do seem a lot better at coping with physical impacts. In that case stick a nuke in the shell and time it to explode a few meters before impact on the shield perimeter. You can then bowl those in from well outside their weapons range and just keep nuke sniping them and running away till they explode.

Ships built as basically giant nukechucking mass drivers with large engines for high sublight accelerations would be very irritating. Use them in packs and when you find an adversary just scatter in all directions and start tossing nukes at them. When they try to close with one of the ships it turns and runs while the others just keep firing nukes at the target.

You could even make these really small for maximum annoyance factor, like less than 100m each. Just big enough to fit a big enough railgun lengthwise, a decent supply of nukes, the engines and maybe some marginal point defence and shields. Then just spam build the little *******s.

nukes wont help. a MAC that fires just big bullets will work, but an APBW is smaller and more powerfull

Nukes won't matter if you're firing for impact yes. If you're firing for proximity they can be useful though, and I'm not sure earth could build a fast enough railgun to get more energy out of sheer kinetic impact forces than their biggest nukes put out. If that's the case then using a mass driver to toss nuclear shells over long distances is a better idea. Basically if you're loading something equivalent to an MK9 or bigger into the tube, then using targeting data to compute speed of the shell and distance/movement of the target to fuse it so it explodes right next to them.

What you've then got is a way to fire a nuke near instantly over distances of several hundreds or thousand miles or more depending on how fast of a coilgun you've got. In other words from outside typical sgverse weapon ranges.

The nice thing about mass drivers though is that they're versatile. You could just as easily fire a solid shell, some sort of sabot type round, a submunition round, a round that contained dozens of independantly guided anti fighter missiles or any number of other things. The mass driver is just the method of launching a given payload.

              that way!

yea it works much better that way. a massdriver would be better than a railgun

Are the Mass Drivers similar to the MAC cannons in the Haloverse?

"Oddly, this is familiar to you, as if it were from an old dream, but you can't exactly remember..."

                  It's the same thing.

The thing with Mass Drivers or Mag Guns, is that you can stick anything in it with a metallic compound and fire it, and because it is being 'fired' by something that can (theoretically) accelerate an object to several thousand KMP/s even if you stuck a knife in there enough of them could deplete the shields of any stargate ship (It is a matter of time) so theoretically you could stick an average nuke in there and with the combine kenetic forces and the yield of the warhead itself could deplete an ori shield within a few shots.

Also if you really wanted to be a Bit*h you could just put a table spoon of dark matter in the warhead and when the nuke detonates YOU KNOW that ship aint gonna survive lol.

Could you super heat the shell or whatever you're firing in one of these MAC guns and turn it into plasma?

I'd love to see MAC gun ships in the SGverse, even some race in a future SGA film that uses that kind of tech in a satellite defense weapon to defend themselves against the Wraith.

What? Dark matter? What has that got to do with anything? It's just mostly inert matter, why would that make a bigger bang? How would you accelerate it in the first place?

Leave to nuke out of it. Don't bother to superheat the stuff. Just fly away from the other ship as fast as possible. Your exhaust will be at very high velocity and will impact the other ship. I will only puncture the first shell, because if you place a small gap between the layers of your hull, any impacting debris loses almost all of its kinetic energy before striking the second layer. The best way to kill a space ship is to throw as much junk as you can at it, most of the energy dissipates due to the air gaps so you need to strike the same spot with a small pellet at relatively low velocity for each layer of hull there is before you breach.

So in conclusion, you just need to get a auto-reloading shotgun cannon, point it at the enemy ship and fire. You'll also fly away from them at the same time.

If you fly at them at max thrust instead you can effectively increase the impact velocity of whatever you fire at them, assuming your gun points forward of course.

The problem with plasma is that it is easily deflected by magnetism so a plasma shot could be stopped dead by a magnetic shield.

jepp, but they are good for planetary bombardment (if you know babylon 5 you know what i mean), this way we could have bombarded the replicator homeworld (and we would not have needed the "Horizon" (i think it was called that) plattform in order to nuke their ships - even better, we could have dealt more damage to them)

                              greetings LAX
ps: against shields (stationary ones as this gun would not be that good with tracking moving targets) it might still be good....(bombard something with asteriods made of metal and such it might still do some damage)
