Percy Jackson and the Olympians : The Lightning Thief News/Discussion SPOILERS

Young cast to headline Olympian fantasy Percy Jackson

Logan Lerman and Brandon T. Jackson have landed the leading roles in Fox 2000's adventure fantasy film Percy Jackson, Variety reported.

Chris Columbus will helm the movie, about a schoolboy (Lerman) whose world is turned upside down when he discovers that his father is actually the Greek god Poseidon.

The story kicks off with Percy's becoming the prime suspect when Zeus' master lightning bolt is stolen. The boy has just 10 days to find and return the stolen property to bring peace to the warring gods.

Jackson will play Percy's best friend, Grover, a satyr. Fox 2000 is looking to place a number of big-name actors in the smaller roles of the gods. Shooting is slated to begin in April in Europe.

Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan join Percy Jackson cast

Fox 2000 has assembled a cast of Greek gods for the fantasy adventure Percy Jackson, including Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan and Sean Bean, who have signed on to play Medusa, Chiron and Zeus, respectively, Variety reported.

Kevin McKidd (Poseidon) and Melina Kanakerides (Athena) are also joining the cast of the Chris Columbus-helmed movie.

The studio is still looking to fill the roles of Aries, Hades and Persephone. Logan Lerman and Brandon Jackson have already signed on to star.

The story centers on Poseidon's 12-year-old half-human son (Lerman), who embarks on a quest across modern-day America to save his mother, return Zeus' stolen lightning bolt and prevent a deadly war between the gods.

Shooting begins next month in Vancouver, Canada, with the studio setting a February 2010 release date.

Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson join cast of 'Percy Jackson'

The cast of Twentieth Century Fox's upcoming fantasy adventure Percy Jackson, about a teenager who discovers that his father is the Greek god Poseidon, just got a whole lot randier. The studio has hired Steve Coogan to play the lord of the underworld, Hades, and Rosario Dawson will take on the role of his imprisoned wife, Persephone, who in this story carries on a flirtation with Percy Jackson's teenage friend Grover, played by Brandon T. Percy Jackson faces a Clash of Greek myth movies: Who will prevail?

Chris Columbus is directing a film adaptation of Rick Riordan's first Percy Jackson and the Olympians novel, The Lightning Thief, a 21st-century take on Greek mythology. But Columbus said that he isn't worried that Warner Brothers is making its own Greek-inspired movie, a remake of Clash of the Titans.

"No, because we're first," Columbus said in an exclusive interview Saturday in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was promoting I Love You, Beth Cooper.

In Columbus' movie, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) is a boarding school kid sent to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods. From there he has adventures with gods and creatures of Greek myth in the present day. This is not a spoof, mind you: Columbus takes his gods very seriously.

"Percy Jackson's a very serious movie," Columbus said. "It's comedic, but it's only comedic in a way that an Indiana Jones movie can be comedic. So I think in terms of comparing it to something like Clash of the Titans, it is more of an Indiana Jones-meets-Greek mythology [movie], as opposed to a pure period-piece Greek myth, Clash of the Titans."

Rome actor on playing a Greek god in Percy Jackson

Kevin McKidd (Rome) said he signed on to Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, in which he plays the Greek god Poseidon, for his kids—and he adds that his young son is checking on whether dad will appear in any sequels based on the series of children's books.

"My son, since I started doing it, he's read the first three books," McKidd said in a group interview over the weekend in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting ABC's Grey's Anatomy at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "I'm watching him read the book, and I'm like, 'So, Joseph, am I in this one much?' He's like, 'Nah, nah, you're not. Maybe in the next one, but in this one not so much.'"

Eureka's Erica Cerra goes goddess in Percy Jackson

Eureka's Erica Cerara takes to the big screen in her next project, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. And she's in some mighty fine company, as co-stars include Uma Thurman, Rosario Dawson, Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd, Catherine Keener, Melina Kanakaredes, Steve Coogan and Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson.

Directed by Harry Potter veteran Chris Columbus, the film is a fantasy based on the first book in Rick Riordan's popular series. In the story, a young modern-day boy named Percy Jackson learns that he's the half-human/half-god son of Poseidon (McKidd) and embarks on a journey of adventure and self-discovery that also involves warring gods. Cerra plays Hera, the Goddess of Marriage and wife to Zeus (Bean), the God of Lightning.

'Percy Jackson' film 'not like Potter'

Logan Lerman has insisted that his new movie character Percy Jackson has little in common with boy wizard Harry Potter.

The 17-year-old actor has the lead role in forthcoming film Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which tells the story of a young boy who discovers he is the son of Greek god Poseidon.

In an interview with Teen Vogue magazine, Lerman commented: "I'm being compared to Daniel [Radcliffe] a lot these days. Honestly, my character doesn't have much in common with Harry Potter, except that he's an unlikely hero who's been thrown into a huge situation."
