Matt Johnson has been hired to write the screenplay for Relativity Media's version of Afterburn.
Based on the series of comic books published by Red 5 Comics, Afterburn follows a group of treasure hunters in a post-apocalyptic world who spend their time trying to find previously valuable objects like the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels. Their opponents include mutants caused by the radioactive fallout, pirates and other treasure hunters.
Written by Red 5's co-founds Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood, Afterburn began life as an "Indiana Jones idea" that mutated after Chitwood saw a Discovery Channel show about solar flares, which cause half of Earth to burn up in the story.
Johnson's writing credits include the thrillers Torque, Into the Blue and Baja 1000. No director or stars have been attached to the project, which is being produced by Original Films and Toby Maguire's Maguire Entertainment.
