Not sure if any of you remember me from the old forum, but I posted a thread a while back about a game me and a few others are developing. It is not a modification to any other game. Things have been a bit slow but they are picking up.

The general idea of the game is to be able to explore Stargate like you never have before. You will start out in the SGC (in first person view) and be able to interact with things--light switches, computers, doors, and several other things (including easter eggs here and there). This game does not involve combat--for now. It is merely an exploration game. Once you've familiarized yourself with the base, you'll be able to dial out, travel to another planet, and explore around it's gate. We are currently working on making the game as realistic as possible, down to measurements, animations, and the like.

So far I only have two screenshots I can show you. Unfortunately they are quite early shots of our gate model:

http://www.echoshift.net/albums/sge/gate1.jpg (158 KB)
http://www.echoshift.net/albums/sge/gate3.jpg (345 KB)

For its poly count--just under 10,000--it is quite detailed. Note this is an early version.

If you think you can help out at all, drop me a private message or contact me on AIM (wakeboarderan) or MSN (cm@strategyplanet.com). Right now, we really need people who have high quality sound effects, ranging from gate sounds to doors opening, etc.

You can expect the first release of this coming in late June.

Wow... that's amazing. I look greatly forward to this... one thing I've always wanted is to be able to walk around the gate room! Perhaps you could create an AI of Walter Davis (aka "Chevron Guy" with grey hair and glasses) to dial the gate for the player? That'd be pretty cool, actually.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses.

We only have one programmer (he is also doing textures/leveling and some animations), and only one guy doing models (he will also be doing textures). It may seem like a small team, but we can do a lot. A lot of things are used over and over again (certain textures, chairs, etc., monitors, different types of things).

Would love to help. I however know little to nothing about game development. If you need people to play it and report bugs I would happy to help.

Now that I'm thinking of it, the basic concept sounds similar to Alone in the Dark. Explorer/mystery games. Sounds fun.

We won't know the requirements for now, but we plan to make them atleast playable by most systems.

Our biggest worry right now is the entire copyright thing.

Can anyone give me any information how I can avoid getting MGM on me without totally removing the Stargate part of it?

The link is www.sgcmod.com (http://http://www.sgcmod.com/)

Yoy could just send a Copy of the game and a formal busness letter to MGM and i'm shure they could let you distribute it.

Yea that is what I was thinking. We are in no way trying to make any profit from this game at all, we are simply doing it for the love of the series and the love of game making.

Isn't there a rule where if you're not making money, it's fine? Sort of like fan films?

Mike
May 15th, 2004, 08:14 PM
After a bit of research--most things, like fan-fiction, fan-art, fan-productions, etc. are a violation of copyright laws, even if they are not being sold. However, they are considered "fair-use" and usually get no ceast-and-desist notification.

well basically it's oky to do it, but if they will want to they just night sew you to rip you of and take allyour money, so you better find a legal way, email them or call support

The models of the gate look pretty good? What did you model them in?

Overall, sounds cool.

Mike
May 15th, 2004, 09:36 PM
They were modeled in Blender3D, a freeware 3D program--just under 3MB last time I checked! A very nice one indeed!

Not that we are ready to release yet, no.

Some will come soon. We are still finalizing the SGC level (making sure everything is accurate is very important to us).

Hiya

Me and a few friends from college did start making an SG-1 style game, although using RPGMaker2003 style graphics rather than 3D ones. What we started doing was each person having a client on their machine, each containing a stargate but they could create their own surroundings to the gate etc, each client would connect to each other by "dialing" an IP address (each persons IP had a different set of symbols based on the "stargate symbols") and add a point of origin for authenticity, the clients would then connect and you could walk through your gate onto your friends planet. That is literally all we got it to do, then college got busy and exams took over and we started fighting and it got binned (literally).

Your idea sounds fantastic tho and I wish you the best of luck and look forward to playing it with a passion. I'm not too good at making games, and deffinatley no good at 3D graphics, but if there's anything you need such as distribution, servers, mirrors, beta testers, help-file writers I'd be more than happy to help you out!

Your idea with RPG Maker 2003 sounds great :D, too bad it didn't get finished. :(

We will definitely need mirrors if the game exceeds our server bandwidth.

I'll make sure to get in contact with some of you when we do decide to hold a beta.

Yeah, you'd better!!!

Hehehe, anyway, it wasn't using the RM2K3 engine, just the same style graphics 'cause I'm a bit of a poor artists and can't draw anything in real life and I'm only just fathoming out Bryce3D.

It's June! Is it done yet? lol

Looks really good, and the fact it is just an explorer game is good. No problems with dying or anything, get to just explore. :)

Any more pictures?

Jeez, I can't even pay someone a compliment without being accused of having a bad attitude. :P

I don't have "issues" with the official game, I just suck at shoot-em-ups and am crushed that I won't be able to spend my hard-earned money on the game. Guess I'll have to settle for the free one. ;)

What's the point of buying it if I can't play it? It'd be a source of constant aggravation to me: this really cool Stargate thing, and I can't do anything with it because I'd get killed in the first five minutes or end up in a knotted ball on the floor. Or both. ;)

sorry to have offended thee, Shadow
Not offended at all, but I really WAS trying to pay Mike a compliment. :P

I understand what you mean...
I'm crap at FPS games aswell and I always get killed. I don't think I have ever completed an FPS game that i've had but I am still going to buy the Stargate game cause it IS Stargate!! and it will give me something to do when i'm bored and to give me another excuse to spend more time on my computer :)

This explorer game sounds great though I can't wait till its ready! its going to be a lot of fun :)

This sounds fantastic!! :D Choose from different species. Dial your friends gate and send a MALP though with a file like a data server. Every user could have a list of GDO codes and can choose to close the iris (ie block the user ;) ). You could do so much with this setup!!

Would it be alright if I put the idea to a friend of mine so he can build something like it? However, I use a Macintosh, so it would have to be cross-platform capable.

Edit: Could you PM or e-mail me and let me know some of the ideas you had in your program? Things like was it 1st- or 3rd-person view? How would you know if someone dialed your gate while you were on someone else's 'world'?
