Do not know about novels, but I know it was mention is Odyssey 5 tv series that the moon was artificial but it was cancel as it was starting to get interesting and the writer was ASOB and wot tell fans of the show, his future plans for the storyline would of been because he hopes to get it renewed sometime, well it been five years just tell what was going to happen and accept it never going to be renew.

i actually went through the trouble of looking for one just for you , because i was bored no offense
There's a series called Heirs of Empire writen by Sci fi author David Weber. It's about a space ship that is actually the moon and traveled here 50,000 years ago and was where mankind came from (decendants of the crew).
