View Full Version : Farscape Comic Issue #1 Discussion Spoilers

I believe it was suggested in another thread that we should set up separate threads to discuss the comics. Should we assume spoilers in these, or should we add spoiler tags to the conversation? I won't comment until there is some feedback, beyond saying I am not let down by the first issue.

I say we assume spoilers, so no tags are needed. But, I would probably put that in the thread title if I was you. I haven't gotten my Issue #1 yet, but I can't wait to hear about it from those that have gotten it.

OK, sounds good. Can we edit titles, or do we have to get a mod to do that?

SunKrux
December 29th, 2008, 09:09 AM
You should be able to edit the title yourself. Just click "edit" on your original post and see if it lets you. If it won't, contact a mod and ask them to add SPOILERS to the title. :D

x posted this in another thread: I haven't read it all yet, but the one thing that bugs me...the inside artist did NOT get Aeryn right at all. :bleh: It doesn't even LOOK like Claudia. What's with the yellowish brown eyes? Claudia's and in turn, Aeryn's eyes are BLUE.

Randy_Watson

I didn't really notice the eyes. For the most part I thought the art was good, but IMO Jothee looks way too much like D'Argo (he looks older).

Other than the Aeryn issue, the artwork is pretty good. It will take some getting use to that's for sure. ;)

As for Jothee looking like D'Argo, I look a lot like my mom, so Jothee looking a lot like D'Argo doesn't bother me.

But is your dad another species? j/k I know they tend to look alike, I just thought they made him look too old.

It did seem awfully short, but I guess I'm not used to Comics, so that's probably the norm. (basically it seemed like a pre-credit intro to an episode, not an episode itself, and with only 4 coming, that doesn't seem like a lot, but I'm greedy so I'll take what I can get. :) )

Actually, he is. :P  As for Jothee, maybe Luxan's look older than they really are. I seem to remember Zhaan asking D'Argo how old he was and he mentioned 30 cycles and from Zhaan's comments it seemed to me that that age was considered to still be teenagerish. I could be wrong though.

So, I know a few of you got it now, how do you feel about it? I hinted at it before, but I think it makes sense to do the Rygel storyline via comic, as it would probably be very expensive for the webisodes. I want to read it again tonight, but it's kind of hard to review it since it seems like not much happened, they just set up the plot. The nice thing is, I think they did a good job of getting the "feel" right, though there are some art issues like Sun mentioned.

Typical FS stuff. I mean, really did Chiana, Jothee, Crichton and Aeryn really think that things would go smoothly with Bishon?

Issue #1 was definitely a lot of set-up for the other 3 issues. I'm glad the comic has the Farscape feel though. I can't wait to see what goes on in Issue #2.

So, who do you guys think is trailing Moya? An old foe, or someone new?

All we can do is wait and see on that. Personally, I kind of have mixed feelings on D'Argo returning from the "dead". While I do miss him, and it would be great to see him return, I feel he went out like he would have always wanted to. He died a true warrior, saving his friends in the process. Know what I mean?

I go back and forth on it, but right now, today, that would work for me.:) It would be awesome to see a reunion with everyone.

But after what went on between Jothee and Chiana in Issue #1, again, boy would that cause trouble all over again.

Yeah, I know we've talked about it a lot, but this seems likely. They just set things up for it with the way it all went down. If they are going to bring him back, I hope they do it sooner rather than later. (or maybe they could work it out as some sort of quest where they have to go get him like SylvreWolfe's scenario).

SylvreWolfe, I know what you mean about the nude Chiana, however, it does seem in character for her. I think they can just get away with a little more in this medium. (not that the show shied away from pushing the limits)

True, but D'Argo doesn't deserve that pain again. That, and I don't want his relationship with Jothee to go completely down the toilet.

Ok, got it, read it.

The short review - 1-10: artwork (minus cover) 3; writing 8.

Long review
Loved the writing. I thought it carried forward the Farscape universe perfectly. Tone and words fit the characters, I could imagine them speaking. Biggest complaint - Memphis?!?!?! I thought John grew up in Kansas. I think someone confused the actor with the character and no one bothered to correct it.

Artwork - I'd love to say something nice about it but then I'd be lying. Rygel, Noranti, and Chiana are fairly close. Jothee looks wooden and like a generic Luxan. John and Aeryn make me cringe. John looks like your generic Hero male - which if this was a new comic and character would be just fine, but this is an established character that should look like him. Aeryn, I can't describe exactly what's wrong - I think she looks too hard. I'm not an artist, but if saw that drawing of her without the context, I wouldn't think Aeryn.

I haven't bought a comic book in over 20 yrs so maybe this is the style and price and quantity that is standard now. But when I opened up the envelope and saw how skinny it was, my 1st reaction was - I paid $5 for that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course, I'm thinking of comic books back when I grew up (the late 60's into the 70's) when me and my brother bought lots and they cheap avg ones were 10 cents and the good ones were 25 cents and were 2 or 3 times as thick (of course that could be my childhood exaggeration - maybe it's time to open that box back up and compare).

What I would like for the future (and know I'm not going to get :(), is if they would scrap the artwork (and cost), take the writing add some description (to replace the art) and publish it in some download or other form and charge a $1 or 2 - now that I would buy more.

Glad to hear you finally got a hold of it, Thunderstorm. While the artwork wasn't perfect, personally, I didn't think it was all that bad overall. I do wish it was longer than it was though. I was done reading it really fast, and now am eagerly awaiting Issue #2.

Where are you located? Because, to be honest, they might not be available for too long. The first printing of Issue #1 sold out really fast, but, they are going to do another printing of it. If that sells out too, it may be pretty hard to find them. I definitely recommend trying to get them sooner rather than later if at all possible.

I am in Canada. Do I have to order them online? Because I haven't been able to find them anywhere.

I am not much of a comic person. I like the stories, pics, and concept, but I find them confusing to figure out what is being said where and when. Does that make sense, lol? The dialogue is hard to keep track of. Maybe it's just me. I only started reading them when the Buffy season 8 comics started.

It would probably be easier to order them online, especially if you haven't found them anywhere. Some websites, even if they are out of something, will let you place an order anyway, for when they are replenished. As for Issues # 2-4, you could still pre-order them.

On the blue cover, is that Sikozu on the cover to the left of John? And if so, what the heck is she doing there? :S Otherwise whoever did the blue cover did a really great job on the art. Wow, so there is ANOTHER limited edition Farscap #1 Comic coming out, this one only available at the New York Comic Con and has a HoloFoil cover:

http://blog.boom-studios.net/2009/01/farscape-1-nycc-exclusive/

LOS ANGELES - January 26th, 2009 - BOOM! Studios will be offering a limited holofoil edition of their sold out comic FARSCAPE #1 available exclusively during New York Comic Con 2009.

The holofoil cover, featuring FARSCAPE’s main character John Crichton, is limited to 500 copies, and will only be available at the BOOM! Studios booth (#1313) during New York Comic Con 2009. Featuring a gold metallic finish on a cardstock cover, it will be one of the most special limited edition collectibles ever made in association with FARSCAPE due to its extremely low print run. It is unavailable anywhere else.

New York Comic Con runs from Friday to Sunday February 6th - 8th, 2009 at The Javits Center in Manhattan.

This special limited edition comic is the first of an upcoming series of three special covers that will debut at a select number of comic book conventions across the country at the BOOM! Studios booth.
“When I first heard the term ‘holofoil’ I didn’t know what to think. It’s hard to describe the special metallic effect the books have. But once the issues came into the office, they blew my socks off,” said Chip Mosher, Director of Sales and Marketing. “Fans are going to absolutely love them.”
FARSCAPE #1 was released to near unanimous praise December 24th, 2008. After selling out in five days, FARSCAPE #1 will be receiving a second printing that will hit store shelves early February, shortly after the second issue hits the stands.

Ah OK that makes more sense now, my mistake.

So what did everyone actually think about the comic? I thought it was really good - it felt like farscape should. It had its funny moments, and it felt a lot like a (longer than usual) episode intro, where as soon as you finish reading the last panel the theme music starts :)

I for one really enjoyed the first issue. The art was a bit dodgy in a couple of places and I swear Memphis was where Ben Browder was born, not John Crichton, but overall it was a really good read. Felt just like Farscape should, which was really encouraging for the future comic miniseries they're planning.

Just out of interest, I've been trying to get hold of all the covers, as I'm kind of a completist with these types of things (can be a bit annoying really! :p ), but I seriously doubt I'll be able to get hold of any of these convention special covers. Does anyone think they'd be able to get me a copy if they're going to NYCC? Bit of a long shot I know, but thought I'd ask just in case!

My only problem was some of the art work, but otherwise the dialogue was great.

:DI have the cover on the right. I think it's the best one... and I was fooled into thinking the interior art would be as good as that one the cover. :(
The story was a good set-up for the series. No characters felt 'wrong' and it was like watching an episode.
>I think we all saw Rygel's double cross coming a mile away, especially with all the talk of her being the only wife he trusted.
>I loved the listing of some of the things Moya's crew has destroyed. A highlight of Farscape post-season 2 for me was seeing what big thing they'd destroy this season. From Scorpius' base to his bank to his carrier [I see a trend :P] to Katratzi to a planet, fleet and, if left unchecked, all existence... I wonder what John'll blow up this time.:D
>Jothee is a man whose problem I envy.
>Chianna starting to mimic crying Deke in the heat of the moment... Priceless!
>Another Dr. Strangelove reference. :D

As for the not so good things...
>I'm not hating the art, but it's not exactly stellar.
>On the same topic slightly, the scene where time 'slows' or whatever... it looked like they felt a jump or collision rather than slowing down. Maybe a word balloon with "It's your turn to chaaaaaaange thhheeee baaaaby, John." or somesuch would have been more effective.

I'm reading it for the story, not necessarily the art, but I do wish the guy who drew the cover I have had done the interior art. Still, the words are making me laugh and I'm looking forward to issue 2.
