In most situations they can use the city's shield to protect the control area, so it's not really the most necessary thing in the world. Although, a backup in the form of a small indepedent shield that has the same purpose as the blast door which covers the window in the SGC, wouldn't hurt. A one way Tok'ra shield would probably be the most useful type of shield they could install as if hostile forces get through the gate they can just active the shield and summon more marines who will be able to open fire while being protected by the shield.

well i think the SGC, atlantis and Midway are all poorly prepared for a gate-based invasion. why?

        1: gateshield/iris. mandatory.
2: heavily reinforced gateroom. spacious. jumperbay construction to drop additional resources/devices in the gate.
3: Gateroom shield. just usefull. stops stun nukes, and other impleasantries.
4: control room Above the wall facing the gate. firing up if you're standing infront of the offworld gate, still means you hit the wall, not the control room
5: control room shield. just usefull.
6: bulkheaddoor over the control room. made of a heavy trinium/naquahdah/carbon alloy, coated in ceramic polymer. core of pure inert naquahdah.
7:at the wall facing the gate, in each corner there's a bunker. bunker has bulkhead doors, blastdoor leading to the rest of the facility. two X-699 plasma stun bazooka's. 1x heavy machinegun. additional ammo. armory.
8: floor around the gate is metallic, and isolated from the rest of the floor. can be electified to stun people.
9: at the back of the gate, there's a big heavy shielded Naq/trin/carb blastdoor, leading to a supplies room.
10: Gate is like atlantis' gate, placed in the floor. there's space for the iris.
11: at each side, similar to the SGC, there's a naq/trin/carb alloy blastdoor, with Energy Shields.
        12: controlroom has seperate powergrid
13: base has its own powergrid.
13: controlroom only has heavy N/T/C blastdoors and onewayshields.
14: controlroom is shielded from EMP.
        15: base has internal sensors.
        16: controlroom has seperate armoury.

if the base gets captured, you're screwed. but then, you're facing a serious enemy.

How much power do you think it takes to raise the shield.
          Max-
          Normal-

what shield? atlantis' shield? or a gate shield?

in #1, it would take the power of a hundred Mark I's. in #2, it would take a Mark I

              the city shield.
most likley in yota watt range for normal and in octillion range for max. but it all depends on what the shield is doing.

Well we won't have to use a city shield to block the invasion. The gateshield can resist impact from darts, so we should be fine.
