Canadian performers union seeks strike mandate
Updated Tue. Sep. 16 2008 3:57 PM ET
    The Canadian Press

TORONTO -- A little more than a year after it ended its first-ever strike, the union that represents most English-language Canadian performers is seeking another strike mandate from its members.

Negotiations between ACTRA and the two associations representing Canada's ad agencies and advertisers have been deadlocked since the end of July, said Stephen Waddell, the union's executive director.

The last contract, covering performers who work in commercials, expired in June.

One of the sticking points has been a demand by advertisers to eliminate some categories of performer in their agreement with the union.

A vote is being conducted by mail among ACTRA's 21,000 members and the deadline for ballots to be returned is Oct. 14. A strike vote does not necessarily mean a union will strike but is a first step in giving it the power to do so.

Outsourcing is done in far more non-union businesses. The people are simply CHEAP. They don't want to pay working/living salaries to folk so send stuff offshore where, gee, don't need to pay benefits of any kind.

But I can see why actors strike. The studios, etc. would take 'em to the cleaners if there weren't unions.

Frankly unless someone sucks at their job they should be getting all the perks of unions ON THEIR OWN. Thats how ive done it an it works, ever since my first job ive been opting out of unions and paying their stupid fees for working non union, but ive gotten promoted alot faster, and the raises have been decent.

        /hates unions as a concept.

Most good practice in companies who are worth working for are there because in the past (in the quite far-back past in a lot of cases) unions stood up for the little people.

Now as outsourcing comes in more and more, and wages are driven so far down that even having 2 parents working isn't always enough to feed and house a family - the need for a union is stronger than ever.

            People have very short memories.

Three words for why unions are necessary, at least in some occupations: Triangle Shirt Factory.
