    Gating to Ida.

To gate to the Pegasus Galaxy we need a ZPM but how hard is it to gate to the Ida galaxy?

I remember Jack just used a power source from a staff cannon to gate there and that can't have the same sort of power out put as a ZPM, can it?

Should we hook a few Naquadah reactors to the gate so we can get more out of it?

Maybe we shouldn't bother though as we don't have any friends in distant galaxies anymore now that the Asgard have gone.

what Jack did was made the equivalent of a one time use homemade zpm (zpm only in the sense that it had enough power to make a stable galactic connection once). To reuse that device also required being able to stabilize a field before being able to create said field (I think that's what the two carter's had to do). I'm pretty sure based on the fact that alot of eggheads and two carters looking at it, and the fact we've never seen in again means it's currently beyond us.

Besides if all it would take is a few naq generators then Atlantis would be in constant contact with Earth without needing midway/macro since Ida is at least as far as Pegasus. Intragalactic a regular gate can handle, extragalactic requires zpm/black hole levels of power.

Remember that Ida's much closer to us than Pegasus.

why would we need to gate to ida when it only takes a few days to get there on the odyssey?

Exactly, no need to gate outside the galaxy when we have ships.

I say Ida = Amdromeda. It is the closest galaxy and the asgard can get there in hours

We can gate there in a few seconds and not have to waste our valuable ships.

We have no-one left to shoot at. Sending one ship with supplies is much more effective and safer than sending a team, with a chance that they won't be able to gate back. .

Plus a ship can use it's sensors to scan the area, can beam teams to planets. Provide back-up in an instant if it's needed. No need to gate home, the ship tracking you can just see your in trouble and beam down a few dozen Marines.

Always dangerous to think that there are no enemies left.

We could send a MALP, see what's around and then send a team with multiple Naquadah reactors.

The Odyssey can get there in a matter of days. Even if we did randomly get attacked, it could be back to defend us.

An explorer type ship is more practical than a team. It can explore more and is better equipped to defend itself if we do run into another race of crazed aliens who intend to eat us.

The gate isn't practical for extra-galactic exploration.

Odyssey should be able to get there in a day or less. Remember it only takes 4 days for a ZPM enhanced ship to reach Atlantis at 3 million light years. Take into consideration that the Asgard took a week to reach the same place, then consider how fast Thor got to and from Ida in "Prometheus" and its sequel as well as other episodes when a 'Gate was not used.
Furthermore consider the shows where a 'Gate was used, a small amount of energy compared to a ZPM was used to go through the 'Gate.
