    Worm Holes and Sub-Space Windows.

Something about relativity concerns me with this faster than light travel. Supposedly the faster you go, the slower time passes. So, if you travel a couple weeks in sub-space, centuries must pass outside this window. So, when a ship in Stargate travels through sub-space, or a person travels through a worm hole, shouldn't a lot of time pass for those of us waiting for them to get from one place to the other?

the ship itself isn't traveling faster than light, it's simply passing through another dimension that creates a short cut of sorts......it is very complicated....

Yes, because basically the physics are just made up to facilitate planet-to-planet travel with ships.

If you travel between solar systems or galaxies in days, weeks, or months, then you must be traveling FTL relative to this universe. Yes?

Well, speed is measured by distance divided by time. So relative to this universe, you're travelling such a distance in such a timeframe that you're going faster than the speed of light.

However, in Hyperspace/ Subspace; the laws of physics are different there; allowing you to take a shortcut compared to this Universe; so whilst you're not actually accelerating to a speed greater than that of light; relative to this universe- you are.

            Technically, yes. Realistically, no.

Hyperspace windows burrow a path through a subspace that runs parallel to our own reality. There, distances are much, much smaller, so you don't need to travel anywhere near relativistic speeds to cross galaxies.

              Thanks for clearing that............Huh?

exactly, so you wouldn't get any time dilation effects.

yup. if you aren't a little confused by the technobable, you ain't watchin' the show properly......

Usually my eyes only glaze over when Carter or McKay talks. But you're right up there, too. Haha.

What I want to know is what the difference is between the wormholes and the subspace windows. In the show, don't wormholes go through subspace?

The Daedalus races a Light Particle across 5 lightyears. A to B.

The Light Particle sets off from A at 300 000 000 m/s (roughly the speed of light).

The Daedalus jumps into Hyperspace at A, transverses only 0.1 lightyears in hyperspace, but jumps out of hyperspace at B. Travelling at subliminal speeds in Hyperspace. Taking 5 weeks in Hyerspace.

The Light Particle takes 5 years to reach B, travelling at speeds greater than the Daedalus actually took, but arriving there later.

This is due to Hyperspace's region of space taking up less space relative to our Universe. What is 5 Lightyears in our Universe is only 0.1 Lightyears in Hyperspace. Allowing relative subliminal travel to travel further than that of Light.

Basically, the Daedalus never travels faster than light, unless you actually do the maths of it.

That's pretty much as simple as it might get

Subspace is another name for Hyperspace, so wormholes do travel through this region; although their are many different levels of hyperspace; so it may differ from that of a Hyperspace Drive (the Drive being slower compared to the near instantaneous travel in wormholes).

So sub-space is beyond math? We have no math to fit it?

I know the visual effects are different. But I'm not sure how we know that, since a traveler through a gate had his/her eyes de-molecularized the whole time.

Well, seeing as it's only theoretical/ hypothetical at best; there isn't anything definite. Although it probably works on the same basic principle of our Universe; speed=distance/time, but the distance is much shorter in comparison to our Universe...

In the SG Universe; Carter/ McKay/ Asgard have probably researched into it and created a new form of maths; compared to our dotted theories and hypotheses on it...

The traveller is probably demolecularised to avoid being crushed by the immense gravity inside the wormhole... Compared to shifting an entire object into hyperspace. Possibly the higher levels of Hyperspace you go; the faster you go and higher gravity you experience. Thus, when going onto a lower level of hyperspace (such as with a 304- it can remain intact due to comparatively less gravity). With a wormhole, it's a much higher level of hyperspace, so the gravity forces only atoms/ molecules transverse through it.
