    phase shifting

when people go out of phase they seem to pass thru everythin like walls tables etc. so how can they walk on the floor?

i'll give u the planets surface, but what about multistory buildings and the ramp up to the stargate.

what determines what exists between phases.

Yet another idea that has many holes within it and hasn't been properly, IMHO, explained.

Well that is kind of strange indeed, you are phased into one of the higher dimensions of our universe and normal matter can not interact because they have not as many dimensions.

There is a nice example of the idea in a part of episode 10 of the serie Cosmos: A personal voyage.

It leads to suggest that merlins device possesses multiple dimensions as well and so do wormholes, so those objects can interact with it and it is never stated how certain objects can interact.

There is an episode in Mutant X where Jesse Kilmartin manages to phase himself through the floor by jumping and then shifting out of phase (phase shifting in MX is very similar to the Tollan one IMO) and then shifting back, hitting the other floor (Ouch!).
I belive that the best way to compare falling while you're phase shifting, is with a blade and an apple. If you hold the blade on the apple without doing anything, the weight of the blade won't be enough to slice through the apple. However, if you press the blade, or you let it fall on the apple it will slice it (the Jesse example).
If you walk, or run, you won't fall down, because, while one foot presses the floor/ground, your other foot only touches the floor and the direction you move is straight ahead, not down. You would have to be COMPLETELY OFF THE GROUND and fall down in order to phase through the floor.
On the other hand, it is possible that both the Tollan phase and Merlin's phase device must have some safeguards to prevent falling down.

Or in the alternate dimension you can walk on stuff if gravity pulls you towards it.

ah see what we're saying is that if theres enough gravitational pull from action like jumping or throwin a ball then that will dictate what said object/person will phase thru.

That feature was removed. It had no reason, except plot reasons. I believe Zats generate some sort of electrical field. If you get hit once, it will knock you out, and a second blast kill you because the first weakens you.

This seems to be correct, because people that have been shot on multiple occasions can resist the shot and it only hurts them instead of knocking them out.

According to Wikipedia, Zats are Electrolasers
