The movie SPECIES and its sequels.......

So aliens send us the chemical sequence to create their DNA just like
they do in the movie Species............

    We have two options.

    a) use the code in the message to create the DNA and mix it with ours
    and create something potentially nasty.

    b) we read the code, analyze it, figure out that it is in fact dangerous
and NOT use it. In fact we either send back a message saying we didn't
use it or the aliens themselves are smart enough to know if we used
    their code or not.

Some would call the aliens ruthless for sending such a message into
space. But what if they do it "just because they can" see below.

Any race that can send a signal like the one in this movie is doing that
to see how the target planet reacts. Smart races wouldn't create a life
form out of this but rather look at the informational and test, test,
test before doing something really stupid like they did in this movie.

Yes they did it because they could. Why should any alien race be
friendly but merely look upon lesser races like ours with the contempt
    of a person swatting flies.....

You see not using the code I think is the right and proper thing to do.
    Go home aliens, go home!!!!

blame the curiosity of scientists, besides, jist looking at DNA can't tell you what each gene does, genetics is not an exact science, it's all lots of trial and error

Option 3, just create the damn life form without hybridising.

I believe they did Option 3 in the movie when they created the alien with just its own DNA in that lab and it grew, and grew rapidly and was dangerous in its native form... So not clever.

Indeed. Mistake true. But why would you think it a good idea to hybridise the DNA without knowing the aliens' true form first?

I don't think it would have been a good idea. I think I said so in my original posting. What I think they should have done was create this inside a computer simulation to see what emerges.

              Culture alien DNA? Bad idea.

Hybridise alien DNA with human DNA? Worse idea.

But yes... simulations would have been the way to go.

Uh....we're really not particularly advanced at genetics. Yes, we've mapped the genome, but that's like 1% of the work involved. Finding out exactly what each one does and how it works in tandem with all the others is a monstrously colossal undertaking.

There's just no way we'd be able to predict what would happen if an alien set of genes we don't understand would do when hybridised with our own that we don't understand.

That's why movies make it fun.......

The people in these movies did it as a rather "matter of fact" kind of thing and didn't think too hard about the outcome lol

yes, the experiment went bad, but you're all forgetting emergency procedure no 1 when it comes to aliens
