    Technical pros share the spotlight

Visual effects experts are part of the big picture in movie making

The people behind some of the biggest digital effects ever done in Vancouver are going the other direction for their latest project -- small, as in little prehistoric bugs and indie-scaled low budget.

The actors wrapped their work a month ago on the B.C.-produced feature The Thaw, and now a team of digital artists previously busy with award-winning work on TV's Stargate: SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica are starting several months of mouse-work to make the sci-fi bugs come alive around Val Kilmer and the rest of The Thaw's cast.

It's part of a democratization of digital effects, as the software has become cheaper and more accessible. Visual effects supervisor James Tichenor, who spent 15 years honing his skills on Stargate and the U.S. horror series Kingdom Hospital, says this latest project allowed him to be a part of the creative process from the project's inception with director-writer Mark Lewis.

"You're included in a way that a lot of the bigger films aren't going to include you," says Tichenor, who was called in by producers Anagram Pictures to consult on early drafts of the script, long before filming started on the $5 million movie.

"I'm not a huge effects fan," says Tichenor, who noticed a trend towards cheaper and more nimble effects work developed on his shows and the other sci-fi series filmed in Vancouver. His work coming up with spaceships, creatures and virtual planets on Stargate was part of what built Vancouver's reputation as an effects hub over the past 10 years.

"We were able to establish ourselves as being competent enough so that people in the rest of the world would watch."

The Thaw hits screens next year.
