SG-1 Season 2 big plot hole

In the episode "A Matter of Time" a black hole has destroy a planet and it's gravitatianal pull effect is going through the stargate and is going to eventually destroy earth. To solve this problem, they use a shaped charge and that sens a wormhole to the nearest gate and away from earth. Wouldn't that gate be Abydos since it's the nearest gate? That would change the story of Stargate dramatically because with no abydos, no "Stargate Atlantis" and the loss of other things.

Abydos is not the closes gate to earth, it is simply one of the gates that have changed their relative position to Earth very little over a period of millions of years.

    Hence why the adress worked.

it is the closest gate b/c that's what carter said in Redemtion b/c she said that they where going to jump in F-302 to the nearest planet with a gate "Abydos"

Ah, back to the original question, would the wormhole jump to the nerest gate to the destination, or the nearest gate to the destination, in the worhole's path?

Well, if a gate works anything like ring transporters, any gate intercepting the wormhole, would theoretically connect to the dialing gate. Though, it would probably be very unlikely that a gate would lie in the path (or extremely close to) the dialing gate's outgoing wormhole. Besides, the gate most likely has a built in command to prevent it from happening.

Assuming I understood correctly, there is no issue since it changed the gate that earth was connected to, and caused the blackhole gate to no longer be connected to any other gate.

I figured she simply meant the closest gate between the blackhole planet and earth, and depending on the location between the two it may NOT have been abydos.

                The way it worked was:

The Earth gate was connected to the Black hole gate (P3W-451) + shaped charge = Earth gate now connected to P2A-270 (according to the Omnipedia). The P3W-451 gate is now shut down. Then all the SGC had to do was shut down the gate.

Also that gate with the blackhole has been used since to send people to their deaths. I can't remember what epp but I remember them sending some bad guy there.

i just watched that episode a few days ago on skyone.

what happened was the blackhole planet team dialled earth to get away. but couldn't because the gate shut down before they got thru. dunno y maybe

                      A) the time dialiation between the sg team the gate and the sg gate was too much. i.e. the sg gate shut down after 20 seconds because the blackhole gate was actually open for its relative 38mins. the sg team couldnt get to the gate in time because they were travelling so slow that it took longer than the gates relative 38 mins to get there.

                      B) the DHD on the blackhole planet got some feedback it was near a black hole so it shut it self off.

either way the incoming wormhole shut it self off. then the sgc dialled that planet again and thats when we got stuck to it. so they set off a shape charge to jump the wormholes destination to another planet. which had no blackhole and then they cud just turn the gate off normally like they do. so yeah no plot hole!

where the wormhole is coming from doesn't jump its the destination that jumps.

It wouldnt connect to begin with

the end of the wormhole which jumps to another gate is the end which is connected to the black hole planets stargate because its an out going wormhole. so it jumped to the next gate nearest to the blackhole planet.

even still if it was done the other way around and the shape charge was detonated on a outgoing wormhole on the blackhole end, abydos isn't the only gate it can connect to. It'll to which ever one is closest and operational. even if the closest one is halfway between the 2.
