View Full Version : Why do You love Stargate so much?

I love stargate so much...i was thinking...and i think i finally figured out why i love it so much. First of all is probably the reality of it, starting from present time and the mountain complex they choose for the setting. Secondly, it's the thoughtfulness of everything...how everything is put and feets together, and it is understandable...that i love in any series. Thirldy, and lastly, i think it's the characters i love...the best part of that is that they do not really change, as they were set in the begining, they have the same character now, but they do gain knowlage and experience, and that does change them a little, but that is good.
The only thing i do not really like about any of this serieses, is that in every episode there is somekind of problem that has to be solved. I'd like to see "A Daniel's/Sam's" episode, where all they do is get introduced to a new cultur, or new technology, and it's all troughly explained...I'd love that...
And then, another thing why I love SG-1 for is SAM, I think she's hot. I really loved "THE BROCA DIVIDE" where she "attacked" Jack in tanktop, umm gosh!!!
And I love how Jack makes fun of repeats in stories, like when they always get attacked by different races, in different episodes, he'll say something like "when do we not?" or something like that, it's cracking me up!!!
And I love how Danny is smart...they way he thinks.
And I love how Teal'c will do anything to save his friends, reminds me of me.
Well...when I'll understand more, I'll post again.
Tnx, for listening. now tell me why do you love it so much.

the plot of stargate is just captivating. everything fits really well and despite minor discrepency's in the storyline everything is like a jigsaw puzzle. the characters are really what make the show amazing. colonel o'neill is my idol...i'm sorry but i worship him he's perfect :-p...hammond is like the surrogate dad to all the ppl...daniel is like the geeky but passionate person who has a drive to do what he wishes to...teal'c is just cool i mean come on the eyebrows...carter is the female that represents females really well as in women are not just beings that stand aside and watch the men do the work...janet is such a great doctor and friend to all of sg-1...all the other characters seem to mesh so well with the others...it brings a dynamic to the show which just makes it stand out. it just proves to show a tv show is like baking...to make the product turn out just right the ingredients have to be perfect.

First and foremost, I love it because it's just plain old good Science Fiction. It's not always believable, but it's always entertaining.
Other reasons are: I care about the characters. That doesn't happen with me too often. Usually I'll watch a show, and get so wrapped up in the technical/believability factors that I forget to pay attention to the trials and tribulations of the people on the show. Not so with Stargate. Every single character is equally as lovable and hateable as they are meant to be, at least for me. This is the first time in a LONG time that I've been so mentally and emotionally invested in a television series. I think the last one was X-Files, pre-sixth season. I only started watching Stargate late last year, and have been tearing through each DVD set at hyperspeed. I've gotten my husband hooked, too.:)
The writing and direction is wonderful as well, and not at all campy or cheesy (unless it's intentional) like most Sci-Fi shows are. The special effects are as good as a TV show's effects can be, sometimes even better.
When I first started watching, I was kicking myself for not getting into the show sooner. Thank goodness for DVD! :D I'm just hoping I get to see Season Seven before Season Eight starts! :S

stargate is one of the best made shows ever made.
it has an excellent cast and crew. its brilliantly directed and acted in every episode.
i like every character because they are made interesting.
i am a female viewer in my early 20's. there aren't many female characters on television who are written well. most of the time females are written poorly, or solely as a love interest or just because they had to have a woman on the show. this is not the case with stargate. both carter and frasier are some of the best written women i've seen. they really seem human.
i love that they incorporate humour into they show regularly. this makes it more real and easier to relate to, something that sci fi is often missing.
i enjoy the on screen chemistry shared between the characters, and i enjoy 99% of the stories they tell.
as someone who would like they're career to be in filmmaking, stargate is definitely a show to look up to and to respect.
thats just some of why i love stargate so much, i could go on all night

I'm not sure there is enough room to list ALL of the reasons but I will say that the thing that first drew me to Stargate was the very in depth and true to life study of Egyptology presented in the movie. This has continued in the series and has also been expanded upon with some really neat, and plausible, twists and turns along the way.

Becuase Michael Shanks is sexy
Because RDA is funny
Because it has an enthralling plot
Because the cast portrays the characters perfectly
Becuase the characters interact perfectly
Oh and Michael Shanks is sexy

In no particular order:
- Because it's fun, funny and self-deprecating.
- Because the excellent cast has excellent chemistry.
- Because the stories are good.
- Because the crew is full of exceptionally talented people who have high production standards.
- Because of its overwhelming coolness. :p
Basically, it's my weekly getaway and has been for seven years (I can't even believe that). I am in my mid-30s and have never followed any other show...ever. I didn't even own a television between 1986 and 1992. I only started watching it on Showtime because I liked the movie and wondered how they would turn it into a series, but mainly because it didn't have any commercials. The above reasons have kept me coming back year after year, even with the commercials (thank goodness for DVR). That and the fact that Joe Mallozzi has pugs (which explains a lot).

I agree. Stargate was made for those people who like action, adventure, sacasm, and just plain fun!! That will be the day when the makers end Stargate. I think Stargate was specially designed to pull people into the action. It feels like you are actually there. That is why people love Stargate so much.

I have to agree with Elmseeker. The original movie (with Russell/Spader) grabbed my attention by making the connection between ancient Egypt and Science Fiction...kind of a Star Trek meets the Pyramids of Giza type thing. I have to admit that I had my doubts that I would enjoy a series based on the movie, I rarely do, but thought that with RDA, it just might have a shot. Oddly enough, I think now that the series has so far surpassed the movie that they are no longer even comparable. The characters have come so far. I love how RDA purposely makes Jack's character "a little thick" and his reactions when Carter goes off explaining some theory, I'd swear you can actually see his eyes glaze over! The humor truly makes the show. INDEED! By far the best show on TV.

- Great movie like special effects. Some scene's look just as good as the new Star Wars.
- Great characters that are very different from each other but have a "band of brothers" thing with each other.
- Great stories
- Meaning of Life stuff
- Gods
- Mythology
- Asgard
- I love the Ascension thing
- I love Jack, great guy. Hardend military officer, hes funny but can be very emotional and serious at times.
- I love Sam, great woman, smart and beautifull, a friend for everyone. The perfect woman. And I like her technobabble.
- Set in present time.

If I could go back to school, I'd become an Egyptologist, because I love ancient Egypt. I love all things about ancient Egypt, It is so awesome to think about all that culture, and the lifestyle. It is just an obsession, I can't help myself. Which is what drew me to the movie originally, then, I really loved the idea of the stargate so it was natural that I was also drawn to the series when I heard about it. That, coupled with the fact that RDA is soooooooo hot is why I love Stargate

That might be one reason it is so popular. People who are archeoligists are interested in ancient Egypt so they like what is going to happen in the movie.

Because it's the complete package: great writing, great acting, great sets, great special effects, tons of action--but lots of "let's stop and think this through" stuff. I love the fact that if I'm having a bad day, all I have to do is pop in a dvd and sit down to hours of classic television (which is what stargate is). I especially love that I can sit down to watch it with my kids and I don't have to scramble for the remote because of something they might accidently see. But most of all, I love that crazy trip through the stargate week after week.

I love Stargate because its so thought provoking. Its such a great concept it gets my imagination whirring. I love it when they meet new races and different types of humans and explore their cultures. It opens up so many possibilities. Like Newbie said, I sometimes get sick of the problems they have each episode and how they solve them at the last minute. This suspense is important to keep people interested but I get more exited when they discover new cultures and interact with the known races as opposed to action and suspense.
I also love the purpose behind the SGC. Its such a noble endeavor to be repeatedly saving Earth and furthering its people. It kind of makes you feel like your life is so insignificant compared to these people who are not restricted to one planet. It makes me wish that the stargate was real and that there is meaning beyond this planet.
Thumbs up to the writers for creating such a complex network of races, cultures, characters interactions and possibilities.

I like Stargate SG-1 for many of the above reasons, and because:
IT DOESN'T INSULT THE VIEWER. :)
How many times have your mental sentiments while watching the show actually been spoken aloud by O'Neill or another character? And how many times are you amazed that they actually WRAP up an arc, or continue it in a way that actually makes sense and doesn't leave you pounding the ground in frustration? *cough* X-Files *cough* Enterprise *cough* This is a show that rewards viewers old and new alike.
Everyone, sing the show's theme lyrics with me!!

I love just about every aspect of Stargate. I like how it has a continuously evolving storyline which never gets boring and keeps going in new directions, with a few surprising twists and turns along the way. I find the characters extremely likeable, so it would be difficult not to root for them or cheer when they're kicking butt. I love the basic concept of the show, as well as the execution. I like the writing, all-around. The dialogue is well written and usually funnier than your avarage comedy, which is a plus - and even so, there is room for dramatic and even dark moments/episodes. Which is also a plus. Then there's the amazing special effects, and the general excitement... Good stuff.

If someone had told me one year ago that I would soon watch Stargate on TV, buy Stargate DVDs, spend hours on the Internet because of Stargate ect. I would've called that person crazy...
Without having ever watched an episode of Stargate I didn't like the show... and that was maybe one of the biggest mistakes in my life.
They were re-running season 3 here in Germany when I first watched it. I was doing something on the computer and was just too lazy to turn around and change the channel... and SG wasn't as bad as I thought it was... it was great.
The reason why I love Stargate isn't something I can put my finger on and say: "That's why I love Stargate". Cause I can't really tell why I didn't switch the channel when Stargate was on... there was just something that kept me watching, even though I didn't understand most of what they were talking about.
Of course I too love the characters, storylines, action, effects, ect. but there's something I can't name that I just love about Stargate... maybe it's just the combination of all these different, great aspects of Stargate that I love...

What a question! With a long a complicated Answer.
I have been watching Stargate since it's premier on Showtime and I watched it because I loved the Movie.
I have a theory about movies and T.V. shows. There is a large group of people out there who view movies and T.V. as pure esapism and entertainment. I work 40 hours a week and when I watch T>V> or go see a movie I dont need to be reminded about all the drama or bad stuff that are in it. I enjoy Sci-Fi programs and movies because I can just escape for an hour or two from the dulldrums of reality.
On that note Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis are mere extensions of that subject. Unlike most Sci-Fi shows out there the setting of Stargate is today (somewhat altered reality though or they would use real life presidents names) and that means we can all relate to the show and its charcters in a way because we could bump into people like Walter and the tech seargant in a grocery store.
I also like the fact that you must watch the show to grasp the full scope of the plot. This is not a show to catch now and then (although there are episodes like that but you wont get a joke ro two here and there). You must watch every season and every week to keep up with the shows constanly evolving plot.
I have every seasons box set and I really got into the show around season 4. But, I dont think I became a super fan until the season 8 mid parter where everything in the Stargate universe that happend in the last 8 years come to a supposed close in the two parter. I loved that shows and applaude the writer for the balls to practically kill off 2 major villain races at once and to get rid of the major protagonist.
I really take offense to the critics who only watch certain shows and say it is a popcorn tv show. it is but in a way it isnt. The is much more. It is Sc-FI, comedy, Drama, romance, and much more.
The other day I was watching Trekkies 2 (mainly to laugh at the trekkies) and realized soemthing. I feel the same way about stargate that they do about Star Trek. If there was a convention near South Florida I would go and dress like a Goau'ld. Now, that makes me a Gater? is that what we are called.
Anyways, I cant wait for the day that my children are old enough to where I can share my love for stargate with them. By the way how old is old enoguh to watch stargate.

One of the things that sets it apart fromn other scifi shows like startrek is that there's alot more action and there's the ancients, nox, asgards and other advanced societies and the whole acsended and diff planes of existance stuff which gives stargate more depth then just being story lines based on outer space. What adds to this is the stargate itself, so that an entire ep doesn't even have to be based on outer space for it to be entertaining and the originality of the enemies such as the goa'uld, wraith and ori (haven't seen yet), so they're so diff from humans where in other scifi shows they seem to be more humaniod often. I love how it's all incoporated into earth's history and evolution of humans based of what is known now rather than a pretend future, making it all the more fanscinating.

Anyways, I cant wait for the day that my children are old enough to where I can share my love for stargate with them. By the way how old is old enoguh to watch stargate.
I'm of the opinion that children of any age can be subjected to just about any form of entertainment as long as the adults are there to put it in perspective and impress upon them what is actually acceptable in society.
Personally, I think the commercials are more damaging than the shows are.
Judging from reactions from parents, it soley depends on how you feel.
A young child might have no problem with SG-1, but might be completely terrified by the Wraith in Atlantis.
Why do I like Stargate?
I like the watery event horizon of the wormhole. The pretty reflections lull me into a trance.
Explosions.
The chevron countdown.
Guessing what colors everyone is going to wear. "Green...darn! I was betting on orange hazmat!"
Hearing Carter preface every statement, "With all due respect..."
Oh, and modern day settings juxtaposed with fantastic alien worlds. Interesting characters and politics. Great acting and humorous dialogue. The exploration of outer space and human existence.
But mainly, it's the pretty reflections in the wormhole.

I love Stargate because after working all week, I want to come home, get away from all the stess, turn on the tv and be entertained, which is what stargate does week after week. Because it is present time, and deals with our military I can relate to the characters. I love the story arcs and the fact that the writers and directors deal with a mixture of fantasy and reality, drama and humor to create a one hour show that is just a delight to watch. The excellent cast and crew make us, as an audiance feel that if we were to all go to Cheyenne Mountain, we would all be accepted as part of the Stargate family team. A little corny, huh? Oh well.

I like stargate because of it's basis on reality and sci-fi. I think that it combines the best of the two titles. It is also at real good show to watch when you have been working all week and want to be entertained, not working.
It is also funny at times and witty. Also, there is Teal'c. Need I say anymore? I call him Tekkee. Which is just some dumb name I made up and don't know how to spell.
It also has a very good storyline that leaves you guessing, and wanting to watch the next episode. The storyline is also believable; in the sence that if the stargate really existed, that is how the miltary might run it. I am a bit of a miltary buff myself, and enjoy shows that at least attempt to bring some miltary truth to the show.
Overall, I just think it is a very well thought out show and is very entertaining.

I love the character development over the many seaons.

What don't I love about it? Tptb brilliantly combine comedy and drama in a way most shows can't. These characters have become people I care about. Every week I enjoy seeing their adventures, both good and bad. The stories at times just leave me in awe. Don't think there will ever again be a show quite like stargate sg-1.

Well I liked the movie, and I like the concept of using ideas from the history and mythology and religion of ancient cultures on earth. When I first watched the movie, I had no idea what it would be about. I was pleasantly surprised to find how the plot of a sci fi movie about traveling to different worlds was linked with the culture of Ancient Egypt, something about which I had at one point studied in depth. When the series began it had a good story line and excellent character development. That was reason enough to keep watching.

Perhaps it has something to do with the way they've weaved the story into Earths own real history, even if it is fairly shallow.

I have to say it's the characters. The concept with the Stargate, not having to use ships. It was so great at the start, that the show was set right now with the technology we have today. It made the show seem more real to me.

I would say the idea of a Stargate, the characters, use of history/myths, and most importantly the lack of an advanced Earth (Star Trek-like Earth) Instead we have a good ole common Earth.
Definitely the whole idea itself of a Stragate universe.

I like sci-fi in general. I can't really say specifically but everything that has been said sounds good. I definately like the whold idea of ascension, and the fact that we actually evolved from them, the mystery of atlantis. They use things that have been unexplained, and put a very nice spin on them.

It was the fan made music videos that made me love the Stargates. The premise for the Stargates is good, but the characters and the plots are poorly written. The videos are filled with action, drama, romance, and humor. Farscape brought me to Stargate, so because I came to Stargate so late I didn't know the shows weaknesses. I had no idea that they don't have actual romance between main characters, instead they give the shippers minor scenes that could be interpreted shippy. How boring is that? The only real romance we get is kirking. That's no fun. Not that I only care about romance, if they made it just action and (well written)humor I'd be just as happy. If I had known the best stuff about the show was in those music videos, which I immediately started watching after hearing Ben and Claudia were in sg1, I wouldn't have bothered.
I bet this is the most negative post that will end up in this thread. Sorry.:o

I love Stargate because the design of the show allows for an infinite number of possibilities and adventures. Nothing says science fiction exploration than an endless number of wormholes that allow you to go to and even more endless number of cultures.
Plus, its just so darn fun.

I love most Science Fiction. I love reading it and watching it. But Stargate is the best show out there. The cast has amazing chemistry together, and the show is full of action. It doesn't hurt that there are a bunch of hotties on there, either.
