View Full Version : Am I the only one...?

Am I the only one who was a bit disappointed by this episode? I mean, theoretically it should've been a blast - new enemies, new ships, great CGI, decent plot... but it all sorta fell flat.
The new enemies looked great, but their introduction seemed forced and - like the rest of the episode - very rushed. Put it this way, could the plot of the episode have worked just the same if the aliens weren't there? Yes, it could. They were extraenous and they really shouldn't have been. It was a bit of a waste, their introduction could've been much better.
What say you?

Perhaps one of the requirements of this episode was the introduction of a new enemy. The focus on the aliens' insignia seems to point to this, since we and the characters will recognize it in the future. I enjoyed TDV a great deal, so I'll leave the rest of this thread to those who did not.

I highly doubt your the only. I have yet to see a Stargate episode where someone of fandom isn't disappointed.

I was disappointed... but only because I hyped this episode up far too much in my own head ;)
Is still a fantastic episode though and easily the best of the season so far IMO

I thought that the basic premise of the story had great promise, but was overall not really impressed by the episode. I was kind of bored all through it.

The show would have been much less enjoyable if the new aliens hadn't been introduced.

the only reason I wasn't very disappointed is I didn't expect much from the beginning
way back at the spoilers stage the idea seemed great but as soon as I heard it's gonna be a one-off episode I knew it would fail
what really surprised me though was the poor execution of this episode which was even worse than I imagined
this was honestly one of the weakest ghost ship stories I've seen.

Theres is always some <mod snip....how about making your point without calling names and disparaginig the opinions of others>, who really cares the episode was good. Nothing is perfect and it could have easily been alot worse, so just enjoy it for what it is.

No you are not the only one. I do not mind that they introduced the enemy but I think it was handled poorly. Shep was an idiot again so at least that is a constant. Hopefully in the future he'll have to deal with Woosley tearing him a new one for poor judgement. I'm not sure if I've ever bought into Shep.
I'm glad that Ronon and Teyla has a role in this show. Ronon would be my favorite character if they let him grow.
In case you are wondering I watch SGA because I like the concept. Shep and McKay drive me insane but I still manage to enjoy the show.
Sorry if this is incoherent. Its 130 am my time and I'm exhausted.

i think it could have been better but the character bits in it were good and the effects were pretty awsome. i think bringing in the uber bad guys like that was good because now the team dont know if ther'ye ever going to bump into them in this reality

It was good. But it had a lot of filler that I found unnecessary and uninteresting. It's a good episode that could've been much better.,

Yes, I too found the episode a bit underwhelming... McKay should have dropped the baby twice.

Wait a sec you "knew" it would fail because it was a one off ep? Some of the best episodes qualify under one off or filler eps and this doesn't qualify as a "ghost ship" ep. That would be Grace (SG-1)and Grace Under Pressure.

You have to keep in mind that there's really only so much you can do in 44 minutes. For a TV episode this was just fine. And I would be pretty annoyed if this had sparked a "lost in space" story arc. The show is Stargate Atlantis. One-off episodes without the gate are fine by my book, but a story arc?

Agreed. Without the aliens it would have been of the same quality as Trio. This was more in the range of BAMSR.

I have to agree. A "Lost in Space" arc would not be interesting. It worked in Adrift but I can't see it working in this instance.

I loved this episode, and I think the only bits that could've been improved were all mentioned in the latest Gateworld podcast.
For those non-listeners among you, they are:
Ditch the Sheppard ego-stroking scene for something a little more dramatic and interesting.
It would've been nice to visit more realities or just different ones. Personally, I would've preferred swapping the new aliens reality or the no-Atlantis reality for one where there was a massive Replicator-Wraith/Earth/Traveller battle going on over Atlantis. Kind of an 'if-BAMSR-never-happened' reality.
A little more thought could've gone in to the dead team. While their inclusion was really unexpected and added a certain extra portion of gravitas to their situation ("They were US and they failed!"), the fact that they all just laid down and died in the core room was a little odd.
A bit more info on that Daedalus' crew and their situation via the ship's logs would've been good, but I understand that this is a 44 minute show and there is only so much they can fit in.
Having said this the FX were great, the story was decent, and the aliens were cool. I liked how we saw some different to usual pairings of the team in this episode.
Also, I am so glad they have found a way to make Teyla useful. For the last few seasons I have dismissed her as completely pointless outside of the Athosian storyline or anything to do with her Wraith DNA, but she was well used in this episode and I hope PTB continue to expand her skillset this season to make her more useful.
The Daedalus Variations wasn't perfect, but it worked great with everything they tried to cram in. I must wonder if this episode would've been worthy of a two-parter...not sure on that one.
This comes in as my favourite episode of the season so far and continues the run of good episodes that looks to continue throughout this season. Only possible exceptions I see are "The Queen" and "Brainstorm" but I have been pleasantly surprised before and am willing to be surprised again.

It was completely boring. This filler would have been better named "The Daedalus Procrastination". The "new" aliens were the Borg on steroids. Their fighter ships were kinda cool, but effects can't save this bomb. Shepherd's lazy thinking and bickering with McKay was very Season 1 and totally annoying. He might want to look to that because his looks are fading. Teyla's umming and arring about her conflicting responsibilites also prompted a few yawns. I deleted it as soon as the credits rolled.

actually you bring up a very good point, maybe well see those aliens again in the future, or atleast i hope so. finally a race that might put up a decent fight againg our asgard magic beams. just point shoot twice and bam no more bad guy. and even their resistance to our wepons especially ronans is quite intriging i must say. and the aspect of our magic impenetrable shield over atlantis not being eneough is also quite exciting.

I enjoyed it until rodney opened his mouth...he started whining and it all went downhill from there. (i also agree on why the other team died...they didn't look like they starved....)

I think it was the best one of the season so far, although that's not saying much, since SGA has been mediocre at best since S4.

I agree with the insignia, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I actually have a feeling that our new race that we meet will be somehow tied to these strange aliens. I think that the new race will be one that actually travels in between realities.

You gotta be kidding me right, Deadelus variations was easily the best episode of the season so far and the only others im looking forward to just as much are first contact, remnants, brainstorm and finale... It was a fantastic episode,,, it was more of an adventure,,, it was fantastic meeting a new race, i want more and more new races like that,,, humans are so yesterday... and the visual effects were great and it was just a really solid stand alone episode!!!
