Ok I know I am going to get mauled for saying this but I’m sorry, this whole episode was totally lame.
Its like the writers just wanted to do a bunch of cool stuff but not have to put any thought into it.
Problem 1: Phoenix shouldn’t have got beat down like that
The very first time you ever see the Daedalus it stood toe to toe with 2 hive ships plus their escorts, and survived… And that’s without Asgard Beam weapons!!! Now you have a new ship, (that I have to believe has at least slightly better upgrades then that Daedalus now that the Odyssey is around to be studied) and it got beat down by 3 Hives with no escorts. I mean come on!!!! The Asgard beams can take out an Ori ship and a Replicator ship in just a few hits. So it should take even less on a Hive. The Phoenix could have totally just charged 1 Hive, blow it up in a single pass, and then book it out the hole in the blockade... Yes, yes, I know the weapons got knocked out. But it took several barrages for that too happen. Couldn’t that Phoenix have fired anything in that time? We are only talking a couple of hits on the nearest target here…. Just seems like it should have took way more pepper to take down the Phoenix.
Problem 2: Woolsey as the next leader
OMG Woolsey?!?!? What were the writers smoking when they thought that up??? Both captains of the Apollo and Daedalus are eyeballing that command position and would be far more qualified for the job. And even if the IOA absolutely had to have a civilian in charge, why wasn’t it Daniel Jackson? For like the last 3 seasons of SG1, Jackson complains how he isn’t off in Atlantis. Now there is an opening as leader of Atlantis and some how Woolsey is more qualified then the foremost authority on the Ancients? Yeah, I'm sure there would have been practical issues with getting Michael Shanks to guest star. But we didn't absolutely have to see him. It could have been just stated that Jackson was in charge during Mckay's narration. Clearly the writers just wanted an excuse for Mckay and Keller to get pissed and leave... But why Woolsey?!?! Anyone else would have made more sense then Woolsey! The writers were just getting lazy on that one.
Problem 3: Replicator Weir
Where the hell is the Replicator Dr Weir in all this? Ok, yeah, I am just assuming that was a replicator Dr Weir in the last scenes of “Be all My Sins Remembered”. But, that that was a very replicator looking ship she was on, so I think it’s a safe bet. Anyway, assuming it is a replicator, why aren’t they getting involved? If the Replicators can kick a united Wraith’s teeth in, why can’t they take down Michael?
Problem 4: The Odyssey
So for what I gather from Mckay’s erratic stories, eventually Michael become so much of a power that earth abandons the Pegasus galaxy. Right? Well in all that time why didn’t someone just take the Odyssey over there and beat the snot out of Michael? Granted I have yet to see Ark of Truth so for all I know it blew up. But assuming it survived, why didn’t someone come up with the idea of taking it over there and moping up the wraith? I mean, it if can fight off wave after wave of Ori ships, there is nothing that Michael could possibly throw at it that could take it down. And there has got to be something in the Asgard core that could cure that Hoffen drug. I mean this is the Asgard for crying out loud! Once you got gray there is no other way!
There were a few more things bugging me but these are the main ones….
I mean the over all idea of the episode was cool. I was just really disappointed in how it went down. Those big “OMG!” moments that the writers were clearly going for (especially that part about Carter dyeing and being replaced by Woolsey) were just contingent on things happening that didn’t really make sense given the Stargate world as I understand it.
*sigh* Come one writers! Up the par a little!
