Seven U.S. television series shot in Vancouver renewed for next season
By Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun

Published: Thursday, March 06, 2008

VANCOUVER - With seven American dramatic series recently renewed for new seasons, B.C.'s television industry has started to rebound from the disastrous Writers Guild of America strike that silenced the industry over the winter.

This week, The CW network renewed big series Smallville for an eighth season and Supernatural for a fourth. They join ABC's Men in Trees (season two), ABC Family's Kyle XY (season three), SciFi Channel's Stargate Atlantis (fifth season) and Eureka (third season) and USA Network's Psych (third season) in the renewal column.

Decisions are yet to be made on American series The L Word (Showtime), Reaper (the CW) and the sitcom Aliens in America (the CW). Canadian series still up in the air include Intelligence, The Guard, Flash Gordon, Interns and Whistler.

**snippage**

Foreign television series account for more than one-third of the film and television industry's annual revenues.

One area damaged by the WGA strike was the making of TV pilots for potential future series. The shortened pilot season coupled with dwindling viewers for network series means big networks like CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox are spending less on series pilots.

And fewer pilots will mean fewer series.

In the new Stargate Atlantis Superfan Contest Video, Martin Gero says:

"This year, we're going to do an all new set of promos, to celebrate the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis, which starts here in July 2008."

As production has already started in February, hopefully Martin is referring to the air date of SGA season five on the SciFi Channel.

that way you can avoid spoilers as people are logically putting the spoilers under each episode title.

Stargate Atlantis may be coming back earlier than expected

Posted Mar 10th 2008 10:04AM by Richard Keller

Atlantis may be coming back sooner than you think.A few weeks ago we reported that a fifth season of Stargate Atlantis would be airing on the SciFi network sometime in the fall, just as the fourth season did back in 2007. Well, it now seems like the premiere of the new season will be moving up a couple of months.

A number of online resources, including Gateworld, TV Guide, and the personal blog of Atlantis executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, are reporting that the show will be premiering in July. "The decision on the Season Five premiere date rests with SCI FI," Mallozzi writes in his blog, "However, I'm hopeful that fans won't have to wait until the fall to see the resolution of our Season Four cliffhanger."

**snippage**

Let me know what you think in the poll and the comments below.

TV SQUAD POLL

Do you think season five of Stargate Atlantis should premiere in July?

* Yes

* No, wait until September.

On the other side of the galaxy, People's Choice Winner Stargate Atlantis has been renewed for a 20-episode fifth season. However, cast changes will be made, when Robert Picardo joins the series full-time as the new head of Atlantis, Richard Woolsey. Also coming as a regular is Jewel Staite as Dr. Jennifer Keller, and fan favorites Paul McGillion and Michael Shanks will be coming to Atlantis once again in their roles of Carson Beckett and Daniel Jackson.

Due to her interactive webseries Sanctuary being picked up as a full-length series, both Amanda Tapping and Col. Carter will be on recurring status. Sanctuary has been greenlit by the SCIFI Channel for a 13-episode commitment.

Stargate Atlantis will return with brand-new episodes this fall Friday nights at 10pm on the SCIFI Channel.

Gifted group behind Stargate's success

Rosalind Duane, North Shore News

**snippage**

Finding remnants of TV and film productions about town is nothing new, and odds are you or someone you know has a tale to tell about Stargate. The long running, popular sci-fi drama has been shooting here for more than a decade -- starting with Stargate SG-1 and continuing with Stargate Atlantis -- and one of the show's stars, West Vancouver resident Amanda Tapping, says that's a good thing.

Currently shooting season 5 of Stargate Atlantis at The Bridge Studios in Burnaby, Tapping finds a short window of time between scenes to talk about the longevity of the show. She attributes its success to a gifted group of writers, who "wove this amazing mythology," and who have managed to keep the storylines fresh over the years.

**snippage**

Stargate SG-1 became the longest running American Sci-Fi series on TV, and it was the only series ever to receive the United States Air Force seal of approval. Tapping played Major Samantha Carter on SG-1 for 10 years alongside MacGyver alumnus Richard Dean Anderson, and a group of regulars who made up the military team exploring a network of Stargates that lead to other worlds.

Tapping then reprised her role for a full season of Atlantis, and is returning for a few of episodes in Season 5. She also appears in the straight-to-DVD feature Stargate: The Ark of Truth, being released Tuesday, March 11. The DVD (along with a second feature to be released in the summer) wraps up a major storyline (the Ori arc) from seasons nine and 10 of SG-1. The resolution of the storyline will allow for future stand-alone movies that don't have to keep reaching back into the mythology of the show, explains Tapping.

**snippage**

After three sci-fi series, Tapping is looking forward to possibly more Stargate features, and says she is also itching to do a period piece.

"I'd love to do a period drama. Starting out on stage and doing a lot of classic theatre, I'd love to get back to that."

Excerpts from SciFi Magazine April 08' Issue:

From page 19:

While there's been no decision on when season five will air, Mallozzi and the Stargate team are hard at work on the season. With the destruction of most of the Replicators and a weakened Wraith, new technologically advanced races that were in hiding will appear. "These races of societies are going to step to the forefront and make their presences felt in the Pegasus Galaxy."

From a David Hewlett interview, pages 52 through 54:

With the Wraith weakened, societies that once hid themselves along the
line of the Genii will begin to emerge next season. "Whether they'll be friends, foes, or a little of both remains to be seen. That's sort of a general goal that we're working towards for the show's fifth season," he says. The series is set to begin production on the new season in February..."

This actually brings up another point. With the move of Life to Friday nights the network is almost programming against itself...well, against its cable siblings at least. We're talking about the shows that air Friday nights on sister networks USA and Sci Fi; programming that actually brings in some very decent numbers. During the fall Life could be up against Psych on USA and Stargate Atlantis on Sci Fi. Come the winter it could be Psych and Battlestar Galactica that vie for the ratings numbers. And, with this being the last season for BSG, there's a pretty good chance that more people will be turning into that science fiction program then they do for a real-life action series.

Stargate News: All-female recon team, deBoer guests on Atlantis, Universe shapes up

Posted Apr 14th 2008 8:24PM by Richard Keller

A few items of interest in the Stargate galaxyA few items of interest
this month in the world of Stargate. First, it has been revealed that
Nicole de Boer has been cast in an upcoming episode of Stargate
Atlantis. Boer, who played Ezri Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and
Sarah Bannerman on The Dead Zone, will play Dr. Alison Porter in an
upcoming episode of the fifth season. Porter will be a "cute nerd"
(are there any others) who strikes up a friendship with the
guest-starring Carson Beckett.

While we are on the subject of the female sex (get your mind out of
the gutter, son) further information has been revealed about the first
all-woman recon team on Atlantis. The team will be led by Captain
Alicia Vega, portrayed by actress Leela Savasta. Vega will appear
during the show's season premiere as a new addition to the city's
military contingent and may be a recurring character. Joining Vega on
the all-woman recon team will be Janina Gavankar as Sergeant Dusty
Mehra and Christina Cox (who has been on Stargate as another
character) as Major Anne Teldy.

SGA is starting in July so this really won't have an effect. SGA should hopefully have little if any competition. Season 5 needs to start off strong, where S4 left off inorder to get that 6th season pickup.

Atlantis Will Have New Sets

SCI FI Wire got a peek at new sets for SCI FI Channel's original
series Stargate Atlantis in Vancouver, Canada, and gleaned a few
details of the ships that will appear in the show's upcoming fifth season.

On May 15, a group of reporters toured the main Atlantis sets, an
"alien village" set where filming was underway and two new ship sets
at Bridge Studios. One ship, still under construction, was described
as a "Traveller ship." It was a small set, very dark and
claustrophobic. The interior bulkheads were flat black and studded
with all varieties of mechanical junk. Bundles of cable hung everywhere.

**snippage**

The second, however, was a standing set, meaning viewers can expect to
see it repeatedly. This set appears to be a new model of Wraith Hive
Ship, including a distinctly insectile throne for the Wraith Queen.
It's considerably larger than the Traveller ship set and more
elaborate than earlier Wraith ships.

Atlantis Cast Changes Coming

The upcoming fifth season of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will see the addition of a new regular cast member, the promotion of another and the departure of yet another, producers told SCI FI Wire last week during a visit to the show's Vancouver, Canada, production offices.

One of the biggest changes is the addition of Robert Picardo as a regular cast regular in the role of Richard Woolsey, who takes over as the new commander of the Atlantis expedition. Picardo replaces Amanda Tapping (Col. Samantha Carter), who had to bow out of the new season as a regular cast member to devote time to her forthcoming SCI FI series Sanctuary.

'Stargate Atlantis' Dresses Up For Season Five

New episodes will include a new Wraith and a new look for some Atlantis team members

By Michael Simpson | Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Members of the press were introduced to some of the costumes that will grace Season Five of the SCI FI Channel series Stargate Atlantis at a recent set visit in Vancouver attended by CinemaSpy. During the visit, costume designer Val Halverson revealed some highlights that Stargate fans can look forward to in the new season. One of the costumes that she presented was a full-length leather jacket-and-robe combination. Black in colour and regal in design, it will be worn by what sounds like a particularly unpleasant variation on a recurring menace, the life-sucking Wraith.

"One of our new Wraith that we introduce are called Wraith Hunters," said Halverson. "They've been established hunting Ronon the first time we met him. This is the new look we did for them and they are real, real nasty guys, as Wraith are. We really like the new look. A little bit different. Obviously the Wraith are very distinctive, but we added a little depth."

Look out for more reports on the set visit in the run-up to the DVD releases of Stargate Atlantis Season Four on July 8 and Stargate Continuum on July 29.

Atlantis Focuses On Wraith

The upcoming fifth season of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will focus heavily on the Wraith--with a side trip to Las Vegas to commemorate the show's 100th episode, producers told SCI FI Wire during a visit to the show's sets in Vancouver, Canada, on May 16.

Other key developments: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) will have her baby in the fifth season. The character became pregnant last season to accomodate Luttrell's real-life pregnancy. Luttrell has given birth, so her character can follow suit...

SPOILERS AHOY!

Not everything is about the Wraith though. Flanigan said it's his understanding that filming for the show's upcoming 100th episode will take place in Las Vegas. Though Flanigan claimed to have no more details than that, he surmised that this would probably mean the episode will have to do with the replicators.

Other key developments: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) will have her baby in the fifth season. The character became pregnant last season to accommodate Luttrell's real-life pregnancy. Luttrell has given birth, so her character can follow suit. The baby is delivered on camera by Dr. McKay (David Hewlett). (Inside word is it's a boy!)

Teyla also sees her abilities get out of hand in an episode in which she touches the mind of a Wraith Queen, which activates her Wraith DNA. According to Luttrell, Teyla "embodies" the Wraith Queen--the actress will appear in full Wraith makeup--and becomes "the leader of an alliance of Wraith."

Also look for the return of the Wraith-worshipping Satedan Tyre (Mark Dacascos) in an episode in which he captures Ronon (Jason Momoa) and attempts to sacrifice him to the Wraith. Ronon is given so much Wraith enzyme in the episode that he gives in completely to his dark side and apparently does some serious damage to Sheppard (Joe Flanigan).

Momoa said that he got so deep into his character's rage in the episode that he actually broke a gurney he was strapped to. Momoa called the episode the most fun he's ever had as an actor. (Contrary to previous speculation, however, Momoa does not lose his trademark dreadlocks in the episode.)

Even Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite) and Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) have close encounters with Wraiths in the coming season, the actors confirmed. Staite said that her character will be trapped with a Wraith in one episode. Picardo cited a moment when Woolsey is about to be killed by a Wraith, as an example of his character's emerging courage.

Not everything is about the Wraith though. Flanigan said it's his understanding that filming for the show's upcoming 100th episode will take place in Las Vegas. Atlantis' Picardo Is Reluctant Chief

Robert Picardo, who joins the regular cast of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis in the coming fifth season, told SCI FI Wire that he initially had doubts about playing the new base commander.

"When I got the phone call, there was a little voice going, 'Wait a minute,'" Picardo said in an interview on the show's set in Vancouver, Canada, last week. "You've set this guy up as kind of an annoyance, a bit of a prig. And now suddenly he's the guy in charge?"

The new guy in charge--taking over from the beloved previous commander, Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping)--is Picardo's Richard Woolsey, the craven bureaucrat well known to fans of Atlantis and its predecessor series, Stargate SG-1.

**snippage**

A lot of Woolsey's screen time in the new season is devoted to learning that things are different when you're in the big chair. "From the very first episode I'm featured in, Woolsey learns that he cannot simply go by the rulebook," Picardo said. At the end of the first episode, Picardo said, Woolsey tells Sheppard (Joe Flanigan): "I've basically violated five different protocols already in my first crisis."

SGA - SciFi Wire: Atlantis' Luttrell Juggles Momhood:

Atlantis' Luttrell Juggles Momhood

Rachel Luttrell, who plays Teyla in SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis, told SCI FI Wire that she's a new mother in real life, as is her character in the coming fifth season, and that presents its own challenges.

**snippage**

Luttrell said motherhood has changed her, and she's using those changes to inform how she plays Teyla. "It's made her all the more strong and willing to go out there and do whatever she needs to do to make his world safer," she said. At the same time, she added: "You're incredibly vulnerable."

With the Wraith hybrid Michael (returning guest star Connor Trinneer) pursuing Teyla's baby for his genetic gifts, that vulnerability seems likely to be exploited in upcoming episodes. But overall, Luttrell said she's delighted that the writers chose to incorporate her pregnancy into the show. "They did a wonderful job," she said. "I think it made for a stronger, more colorful character. And it's made her all the more powerful and multi-dimensional this year."

2008-2009 Preview - What Shows Are Returning and When?

By Mark Wilson, About.com

Here are some brief notes on the status of current sci-fi /fantasy shows on the schedule for the 2008-2009 season. More in-depth coverage of individual shows, and overviews and details on the new shows planned for the Fall, will follow and continue throughout the summer. Several genre shows were renewed but won't reappear until early next year, so for fans of shows like Battlestar Galactica and Reaper it'll be a long wait.

RETURNING

* Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi): The second half of season 4 (11 episodes) will air in 2009.

* Chuck (NBC): Season 2 will air on Mondays at 9 p.m. in the fall before Heroes, with the premiere scheduled for Sept. 29.

* Doctor Who (Sci Fi): Season 5 will air in 2010 in the UK, with a new executive producer and lead writer but probably not a new Doctor; there will be several specials meanwhile. The good news is that BBC shows seem to be airing in America as quickly as possible, so the lag time will be less than in the past.

* Eli Stone (ABC): Season 2 will air in the fall, Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

* Eureka (Sci Fi): Season 3 premieres July 29, 2008.

* Ghost Whisperer (CBS): Season 4 will air in the fall.

* Heroes (NBC): Season 3 (25 episodes) will air Monday nights at 9 p.m. in the fall, with new villains alongside Sylar (Zachary Quinto).

* Knight Rider (NBC): Season 1 will air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in the fall, following on the success of the pilot/TV movie. The premiere is Sept. 24.

* Kyle XY (ABC Family): Season 3 (10 episodes) will air starting in January 2009.

* Medium (NBC): Renewed for midseason 2009, eventually to air Sundays at 9 p.m.

* Pushing Daisies (ABC): Season 2 will air in the fall.

* Reaper (The CW): Season 2 (13 episodes) will air in spring 2009.

* Smallville (The CW): Season 8, likely the last season, will air in the fall.

* Stargate Atlantis (Sci Fi): Season 5 premieres July 11, 2008, with a new commander (longtime recurring fussbudget Woolsey, played by Robert Picardo) and a new away-missions team.

* Supernatural (The CW): Season 4 will air in the fall.

* Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox): Season 2 will air in the fall, on Mondays at 8 p.m. (opposite Chuck).

* Torchwood (BBC America): Season 3 has been confirmed but not yet scheduled.

CANCELLED

* Bionic Woman (NBC): Canceled in February.

* Flash Gordon (Sci Fi): Canceled in April.

* Jericho (CBS): Canceled in March.

* Journeyman (NBC): Canceled in December.

* Moonlight (CBS): Canceled in May.

* New Amsterdam (Fox): Canceled in May.

Amelia and Alonso; plus Malozzi and Staite discuss things to come

By Michael Simpson | Friday, May 30, 2008

Two more names have been added to Stargate Atlantis lore this week, according to writer and producer Joseph Mallozzi. One is actress Daniella Alonso. She has been cast in the role of Katana, a character who belongs to a group of people called Travelers. In a post on his blog, Mallozzi revealed that she will be making her first appearance in the two-part mid-season story.

"Those of you not familiar with Daniella’s work may want to check out her 11-episode arc in season two of Friday Night Lights," said Mallozzi. "She was excellent in FNL and is doing a wonderful job for us on 'The Lost Tribe.'"

**snippage**

The other name Mallozzi gave is that of the character Amelia Banks. Banks has already been in several episodes of Stargate Atlantis as an unnamed gate technician. She is played by Sharon Taylor. Her character has now been named because she is getting more screen time, Mallozzi explained.

Flanigan Hopes For More Character Development On 'Stargate Atlantis'

THE VIDEOLAND VIEW: The fifth season of "Stargate Atlantis" launches July 11 — with several cast changes, including a shift from starring to recurring status for Amanda Tapping, and Robert Picardo essentially taking her place as the mission leader on the Sci-Fi series. This "could be" a transitional year, agrees the show's wryly witty star, Joe Flanigan.

"I've been tempered by my experience not to make any bold statements. It's definitely been a different experience for us with the changes. The storylines seem to be a little more sophisticated." But he can't talk about them. Offers Flainigan, "I'll give you one secret: I don't die."

Flanigan does say, "I'd like to see a little more exploration of my character. They're kind of working on a couple of ideas we could possibly do. I certainly don't feel the well is dry in terms of continuing to make these characters interesting. Still, there's no doubt about it — the challenge of keeping a character dynamic through a number of seasons is a real one. In the genre of science fiction maybe less so, because you're dealing with big external threats and bizarre situations," he says.

"Luckily, we all like each other and keep each other sane, which is a major plus," he adds. "If you're going to spend this much time on a project, you'd better enjoy the people you're working with."

Mitovich: Very good, they are! (Oops, I Yoda'd there for a second.) For one, that rumor about the 100th outing being set in Earthly Las Vegas has some teeth to it. "We've yet to break the episode," says exec producer Joseph Mallozzi. "[But] in our initial spinning, we have discussed the possibility of having the best of both worlds — or galaxies, as the case may be." That's just one of more than 20 TVGuide.com reader questions Mallozzi answered for me the other day. Watch for the rest as Premiere Night nears.

So it could be set on both Earth and Atlantis?

Could it have something to do with Area 51 I wonder? I'm inclined to think that the Wraith will find their way to Earth, but not just the SGC this time. I'm probably totally wrong though!:D

I'd green you for all the info, but it says I need to spread some around first:(

Mallozzi's blog indicated Vegas for one episode (cringing at that thought). I'm not sure what TPTB's infatuation is with setting the 100th and 200th, etc. episodes on Earth, instead of say, hmm, space ;)

Joe M said parts of both 5x19 (currently titled Vegas) and 5x20 (the 100th episode) would be filmed "on location". If the whole Vegas thing is for real then the inclusion of Area 51 somewhere in the plot is a reasonable guess - only time will tell.

Film and TV production lagging in Canada

It's all quiet on the northern front as SAG talks continue

By Etan Vlessing

June 27, 2008, 04:11 PM ET

TORONTO -- Canadian studio operators are eyeing the horizon for U.S. film and TV shoots like sailors lost at sea as the SAG contract talks in Los Angeles put a damper on production here.

"The studios that we're talking to about potential for work have all made it quite clear that they are not going to be greenlighting pictures until the SAG (deal) is worked out," Toronto Film Studios president Ken Ferguson said Friday.

**snippage**

The one Canadian bright spot production-wise is Vancouver, where U.S. TV series provide welcome work for worried production crews.

"We feel fortunate to have the business hat we have, but we're concerned that people might be out of work again, which isn't good for the industry at any time," said Peter Leitch, president of Mammoth and North Shore studios in Vancouver.

The Mammoth and North Shore studios have "Night at the Museum 2" and U.S. series including ABC Family's "Kyle XY," Sci Fi Channel's "Stargate Atlantis" and USA Network's "Psych" in production after recent renewals.

Studio operators report some exploratory phone calls from U.S. producers anticipating a possible return to production here in the fall, but the consensus is that producers, by their current inactivity, are sending a message to SAG about their resolve.

Today's News: Our Take

Momoa's New 'Do Is a Don't, Says Stargate

His character, Ronon, still has his massive mane, but Jason Momoa, who plays the studly warrior on Stargate Atlantis, has shed his dreads — all five pounds of them.

"After six-plus years, my head and neck were starting to hurt a lot," says Momoa, adding that all the hair kept him from wearing a bike helmet and keeping his balance while surfing. Execs at the Sci Fi Channel "didn’t want me to cut 'em," so now the actor has to wear a wig of dreads on screen. But, he adds, "The wig weighs more than my own hair, which sucks. I’d love to get rid of it — and see what the fans think!" — Ileane Rudolph

By Steve West: 2008-07-01

The new season of Stargate Atlantis is set to include a few landmark moments: not the least of which is the show’s 100th episode. The Stargate universe surprised many people when SG-1 became a decade long success story for the Sci Fi Network. We had a chance to speak with the new leader, Richard Woolsey, who is played by Robert Picardo along with executive producer Joseph Mallozzi. We’ll have the full transcript up for your dissection and perusal as soon as we can. In the meantime here are a few highlights.

This new season of Stargate Atlantis will feature all of the action and adventure that makes the series exciting to fans. Catch “Search and Destroy” on Sci Fi Wednesday, July 9th at 10:00pm EST.

(I just checked SciFi's schedule, SGA season five premiere is still listed as Friday, July 11 at 10pm, with a repeat at Midnight.)

Episode 01: Search and Rescue (http://www.themovienetwork.ca/stargateatlantis/episodes.php?ep=81)

An injured Sheppard is trapped alongside Ronon beneath the rubble of Michael’s collapsed compound. Trapped in another debris pocket, McKay and Lorne realize that a subspace burst has already reached Michael. Light years away, Michael’s flagship Wraith Cruiser hurtles towards the compound. Imprisoned onboard, a pregnant Teyla begs Kanann, the father of her baby, to help save her. Carter leads a rescue mission to the planet. Her team succeeds in digging up McKay and Lorne, but Ronon and a rapidly deteriorating Sheppard are buried far deeper in the rubble. With Michael and his hybrids on their way back to deal with intruders, and the Daedalus already enroute, the question becomes: Who will reach them first?

Episode 02: The Seed (http://www.themovienetwork.ca/stargateatlantis/episodes.php?ep=82)

When Dr. Keller fails to report for her morning shift, concerned team members investigate and are shocked by what they discover: Jennifer, unconscious in her quarters - a mysterious web of tendrils attached to her body. Suspecting her condition may be linked to her research into the wraith data recovered from Michael’s lab, the team makes the decision to bring Beckett out of stasis. The beloved doctor leads the medical investigation while Sheppard and co. are quarantined under suspicion that they may have been exposed to the same virus that has affected Keller. As Beckett struggles to find a solution, the alien organism grows, creeping out into the adjoining corridors toward the main power grid. With Atlantis itself now under threat, Woolsey is ultimately faced with a decision that could cost Keller her life.

Episode 03: Broken Ties (http://www.themovienetwork.ca/stargateatlantis/episodes.php?ep=83)

Ronon is ambushed during an off-world mission and awakens, much later, a prisoner of his former friend, Tyre. The fellow Satedan, it turns out, has fallen on hard times since they last crossed paths. Abandoned by the wraith he once served, he is undergoing a physiological and psychological withdrawal from the reverse-feeding process once granted to him as a wraith worshiper. But he believes he has come up with a way to win back the respect of his former masters: by delivering them Ronon. Intent on turning their defiant captive, the wraith begin their process of reverse-feeding - stealing Ronon’s life, bringing him to the brink of death, then restoring his youth. Again, and again, and again. A tip, meanwhile, leads the team to an abandoned village. But Ronon and the wraith are long gone, and the only remnant of their former presence is a seriously injured Tyre who may be their only hope of rescuing their friend.

Episode 04: The Daedalus Variations (http://www.themovienetwork.ca/stargateatlantis/episodes.php?ep=84)

When a mysterious, duplicate Daedalus appears in orbit over Atlantis, the team is dispatched to investigate. Once aboard the deserted and severely damaged ship, the team discovers an ominous video message from the former captain. But before they can make sense of the situation, the ship is propelled into an alternate reality. As McKay tries to figure out what is going on, the ship continues to jump through various alternate realities, encountering an alien armada and the blistering heat of an expanding sun. Worse - the team realizes that if they don’t find a way back to their reality soon, they risk being lost forever.

SGA - Multichannel News: Season Five Premiere: A Summer Space Romp:

From Multichannel News' TV Crush (http://www.multichannel.com/blog/1300000330/post/1500029150.html) column by Mary McNamara:

(Please follow the link for the complete column.)

'Stargate Atlantis' Season Five Premiere: A Summer Space Romp

July 1, 2008

Heading into its fifth season, launching July 11@10p., SCI FI Channel's Stargate Atlantis is enjoying something of a resurgence. The series concluded the previous year on a ratings upswing, and at some point during the upcoming season, the series will hit the landmark 100th episode.

First, a word about the Stargate Atlantis opening credits. I heart the opening credits.

Video link (http://www.youtube.com/v/hFtc8kSQjjw)

The season five premiere, penned by executive producer Martin Gero, lets viewers bask in a happy place - at least for now. A little warmth? A happy resolution? What a unique concept. (Battlestar's Ron Moore: are you listening?)

I'm pretty burned out at this point with the conspiracies within conspiracies, death, destruction, and the relentless drumbeat of amoral, and/or despicable, characters.

**snippage**

So what does this mean for Atlantis as its fifth season premiere approaches? Can it go 10 seasons like it‘s big brother? To be perfectly honest - it’s highly unlikely....as a show moves past its fifth season, the odds are stacked against it. Ultimately, it comes down to the numbers - less the ratings and more the bottom line. The longer a show is on the air, the more expensive it is to produce. Throw in the resurgence of the Canadian dollar, once pegged at 63 cents to the U.S. greenback, it now hovers at par, an approximate 37 cent bump which adds a significant hit to the production budget.....

....And yet who knows what the future holds. WE certainly didn‘t nine years ago when we expected production on SG-1 to conclude after it‘s fifth season. But if and when Atlantis does come to an end, I don’t think it should be cause for anger or resentment. Both MGM and SciFi have been great supporters of the show and, if you go by SG-1’s example, fans can be assured that the end of the series will not be the end of Atlantis. Like SG-1, it will live on in longer form dvd releases.

I was pretty excited when our friendly neighborhood FedEx guy dropped off the envelope with the promo package for season five of Atlantis. And I remained so even after my DVD player balked at reading the disk. It just served as a fine example as to why it's not geeky to have a computer connected to your television, it's just handy.

As the disk started up I was thinking it would be a good idea to do an early look post about where things look to be heading in season five. Unfortunately, Sci Fi only sent out the first episode of the season, and it's not telling us much of anything about season five, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The episode plays like S04E21 right up to the last scene, where season five begins to take over. Given where we last left our friends in Atlantis, that was probably to be expected. More, including some minor spoilers, after the jump.

Atlantis' Picardo Isn't Obvious

Robert Picardo, who joins the regular cast of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis, told reporters that he likes that his character, the abrasive bureaucrat Richard Woolsey, isn't the obvious choice to command the city.

Woolsey takes over command from Col. Samantha Carter (former regular cast member Amanda Tapping, who is leaving to star in SCI FI's upcoming Sanctuary).

"[Woolsey] is an unexpected choice for this job, and that is what, I think, the viewers will hopefully respond to the way I have," Picardo said in a conference call. "I think that it was a bold thing for the producers to pick a guy like this who doesn't seem to be necessarily the first choice for a leader, but to have him try and make himself into one. And that is the interesting and creative choice."

Atlantis' Higginson Bows Out

Joseph Mallozzi, executive producer of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis, told SCI FI Wire that it's unlikely former series regular Torri Higginson would return as Dr. Elizabeth Weir in the upcoming fifth season, though her storyline was left hanging. But Jill Wagner's renegade leader Larrin may return in a future season.

Higginson turned down a script that brought back her character, Mallozzi said in an interview. (Fans recall that Weir died and was resurrected as a human-form Replicator and leader of the surviving Replicators in season four.)

Robert Picardo and Joseph Mallozzi on season five of Stargate Atlantis

Posted Jul 3rd 2008 11:01AM by Richard Keller

After a fairly brief hiatus (only 4 months) Stargate Atlantis returns to the SciFi channel with all new episodes starting on July 11th. Now entering its fifth season, the show is reaching a turning point thanks to a number of off-season cast changes. First and foremost in is the replacement of Amanda Tapping's Colonel Samantha Carter as administrator of Atlantis with Robert Picardo's Richard Woolsey. This is one year after Tapping replaced Tori Higginson on the show. It's an interesting turn of events since Woolsey has not been the most popular of characters in the entire Stargate franchise. And, as the character has never been a people person, there is bound to be some conflict between members of the Atlantis team and himself.

In order to hash this all out, Picardo and Atlantis executive producer Joseph Mallozzi got together with the press to answer some questions about Woolsey and Atlantis, the shows 100th episode, and how Picardo looks in a jumpsuit.

**snippage**

Finally...

How Picardo looks in the command uniform: Picardo said wearing the command uniform is a bit of a change for a character who has worn a business suit for the last 30 years. Saying that, he looks okay in the uniform. "It's good to have a trim butt in science fiction."

excerpt:

I’m anticipating this hotly discussed script in the upcoming season, Whispers. It’s got a horror tinge and I was wondering if you could elaborate?

Joseph Mallozzi: I’ve always been a big fan of horror and one of the things that - , one of the great things about Stargate is that we can do such a variety of different types of stories.

I mean, we do our funny episodes. We do our serious episodes, the off world episodes, the ship based episode. I just realized that we’ve never really done a horror episode.

We’ve done monster movies but never really kind of a scare fest. So I pitched stuff to the guys and they really liked the idea.
I spoke to Will Waring, our Director who directed the episode and he’s also a big fan of horror movies.

We actually did a little mini horror movie for the episode, Whispers. What we did, Joe Flannigan and Paul McGillion -- two of our regulars -- joined an all female team on an off world adventure.

I mean, one of the things about TV, episodic television in general is at the end of the day you kind of know that your heroes are going to come out of it in one piece, more or less, unless you happen to be Carson Beckett (and trend A) or what have you.

Talking With Robert Picardo of "Stargate: Atlantis"

Excerpt:
About replacing Amanda Tapping:

Robert Picardo: In the same way that when I got my role on Voyager as the artificial intelligence character in that cast, I was concerned that I would be measured against Brent Spiner’s character because he’d been the android on the Next Generation and now I was the hologram on Voyager.
But nonetheless, we were going to mime some of the same issues and story lines. And I thought he had done that so successfully and was so popular that I would inevitably be measured against him. Fortunately in that case, I was defined by the writers and as much as I could by my own work as differently as I could be from him, and it turned out to be a non-issue, I think.

Stargate Atlantis Season Premiere

By K. Thor Jensen

SCI FI's Stargate Atlantis has enjoyed considerable success for a spin-off of a spin-off of a mostly forgettable movie. Entering its fifth season, the show has developed a number of memorable characters and engaging plots, and last season's cliffhanger finale had the faithful waiting in suspense to see what happens next. The series takes place in a rich, interesting universe, well-developed with a number of distinct civilizations. The primary plot arc of the show has been the war against the parasitic Wraith, but things have grown more complex with the introduction of Michael, a strange hybrid of Wraith and human who considers himself a more evolved lifeform than either.

July 8, 2008 in Television

The seventh episode of season five features a departure from the traditional "sci-fi light" formula of Stargate Atlantis that features elements of light comedy and light drama (hence the moniker) but rarely too much of either one. "Whispers" allows exec-prod Joe Mallozzi to return to his horror roots while also introducing the first ever all-female offworld team, which Joe says was an immediate hit with the other writers.

"I spoke to Will about it and he's like yeah -- Will Waring, who is our Director who directed the episode and he's also a big fan of horror movies -- so, you know, we actually did a little mini horror movie for the episode, Whispers. I pitched stuff to the guys and they really liked the idea."

Conference Call With Joseph Mallozzi & Robert Picardo

Posted by Sam on Wednesday, 9 Jul 2008

Our reporter Linda Craddock has been very busy these past few weeks rounding up interviews for all our fans of “Stargate: Atlantis,” the next Mummy film, the new television series “The Middleman” and more.

She recently sat in on an invitation-only press conference sponsored by the GE CORP AM INITIATIVES GROUP. The conference was attended by Linda and several other reporters as they asked questions of executive producer Joseph Mallozzi and actor Robert Picardo of “Stargate: Atlantis.”

The moderator for this conference was NBC’s Carol Janson and it was arranged by Michele Rosenblatt from the SCI FI Channel. It took place on July 1, 2008 at 12:00 pm CT.

Coordinator: Hello and welcome to the Stargate Atlantis conference call. At the request of NBC, this conference is being recorded for instant replay purposes and a transcript of the call is also being made.

With us on today’s call from Stargate Atlantis are Robert Picardo and Joseph Mallozzi. Also on the call are Carol Janson of NBC and Michele Rosenblatt of SCI FI.

[NOTE: The media included: Monsters and Critics, MediaBlvd, Crown Features, SliceofSciFi.com, FanBolt, Niagara Frontier Publication, The Deadbolt.com, SCIFI.com, TVZone Magazine, SyFyPortal.com, TVaholic.com, IGN.com, Flash News, i09.com and TVsquad.com!)

A brief excerpt:

Coordinator: Our last question does come from Jamie Ruby of MediaBlvd. You may ask your question.

Jamie Ruby: For both of you - what’s both your most favorite part of working on the show and your least favorite part?

**snippage**

Robert Picardo:...It’s not a secret, I think that the Star Trek producers were kind of ivory tower producers who rarely came down to the set to see the actors. In fact, if the producers came to the set, the actors’ response was normally uh-oh, you know, what did we do wrong.

But the Stargate producers visit the set all the time and there’s a very relaxed, you know, kind of easygoing atmosphere. They’ll pop down and say hello to us. They’re not located on the other side of the lot the way the Star Trek ones were at the other end of the Paramount lot, as far away from the sets as they could possibly get.

They’re just upstairs in the, you know, in the - in our main stage, the production office is. So I really like that - that it - what Joe described is, you know, the extended family thing is much more apparent to me here because they really do, you know, mom and dad really do come down to visit the kids on the set. And that’s, you know, that’s - that makes it a very relaxed atmosphere.

Returning To The Pegasus Galaxy: Stargate Atlantis 5.01 - “Search and Rescue”

By Joseph Dilworth Jr. ? July 9, 2008

Stargate Atlantis is back for it’s fifth season and things kick off in fine fashion. This episode does have quite a lot to accomplish in its 41 minute runtime, too. There’s a couple of cliffhangers from last season to resolve, a regular character to write out, a regular character to introduce, a recurring character to say hello to, not to mention presenting a logical, engaging and entertaining story. “Search and Rescue” delivers all this at a fast, yet unhurried clip and by the end you feel like you’ve just watched a feature film worth of story and action. That’s a good thing, trust me.

Interview: Robert Picardo

The veteran actor talks about his new 'Atlantis' command

By Mark Wilson, About.com

A week before the debut of Stargate Atlantis's fifth season I spent some time talking with the intelligent and funny Robert Picardo, who plays the new expedition commander Richard Woolsey. Picardo is well known not only for Woolsey, introduced in the seventh season of Stargate SG-1, but as the holographic doctor on Star Trek: Voyager and as Dr. Richard on China Beach (among many, many other roles). For an image gallery of Robert Picardo past and present, click here (http://scifi.about.com/od/actors/ig/Robert-Picardo/index.htm).

A brief excerpt:

You've got episodes coming up with Michael Shanks again.

Oh yeah, he's great, he's great fun. I love his character. And of course, the two of them together, talking -- I was a fast talker, on Voyager. But I cede the competition to those guys [laughs]. I don't know that, even in my prime, when I could talk really fast, I could keep pace with them, but now I know I cannot.

Atlantis Season 5 Preview

What to Expect from 'Stargate Atlantis' Season 5

By Mark Wilson, About.com

Stargate Atlantis returns to Sci Fi for a fifth season on Friday, July 11. Though producers have kept much of the season's plot developments under wraps, a fair amount has come out in advance, and hints and comments from interviews with David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) and Robert Picardo (new expedition commander Richard Woolsey) have added to our sense of what to expect. Still, much has been kept deliberately vague -- producers have said that the Atlanteans will meet a "new race" this year, but that's all they've said. Well okay!

Here are the highlights:

Command change: As has been widely reported, Richard Woolsey, the IOA bureaucrat played by Robert Picardo since season 7 of Stargate SG-1, will be taking over as commander of the Atlantis expedition during the first episode of season 5. Woolsey replaces Col. Samantha Carter, who has been removed from command. Picardo told me he will be in 14 or 15 of the 20 episodes of the season, the remaining episodes taking place "off-base." Used to evaluating others' decisions rather than making them himself, Woolsey is not entirely prepared for command, but over the course of the first few episodes he quickly determines how to leverage his past study of leaders like Gen. Hammond and Col. Carter to effectively deal with threats to the station and even surpass his own ingrained by-the-book instincts.

Robert Picardo and Joseph Mallozzi on Stargate Atlantis Season 5

By Troy Rogers

Now that actress Amanda Tapping won't be returning to Stargate Atlantis in her long-running role of Colonel Samantha Carter, the fifth season of the popular SCI FI series will see former Star Trek Voyager actor Robert Picardo step into the leadership role with his previously established Richard Woolsey character. Although Woolsey has never been as popular a character on the series as some favorites, the decision to make him a leader is an out-of-the-box move that should make for some fresh, interesting, and contentious dynamics between the Atlantis characters. Picardo's expanded role will certainly take the show to new territory from a leadership standpoint.

After a short break, the Stargate Atlantis cast returns to the airwaves on July 11 and The Deadbolt was on hand this week for a press conference with actor Robert Picardo and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi to find out what fans can expect from Woolsey's new leadership role, how the show has adapted to the departure of Amanda Tapping, and what's in store for the show's 100th episode.

A brief excerpt:

THE DEADBOLT: Yeah, did you like him [Woolsey] or did he have to grow on you?

PICARDO: No, when I first met him - when I first made my convention appearance - his personal appearances that of course, all the science fiction actors make - after two or three appearances as Woolsey, I would be asked questions about working on Stargate and they’d say I really like your character. And I would say, "You’re kidding," because I thought of him as, you know, as kind of a jerk early on. But again, his very second appearance, which I think was called "Inauguration", you saw that even though he rubbed people the wrong way and was seen as someone who came in only to find out who’d screwed up and, as I said, assign blame - that at least he was driven by a personal passion that was quite positive and ethical.

He really believed in the importance of civilian oversight of a secret military operation so that it wasn’t - so that a rogue element did not come in and take it over, and would no longer serve the interest of the public.

Interview:

We had the honor of sitting down with Robert Picardo (Star) and Joseph Mallozzi (Executive Producer) to talk about the upcoming season five, where "Stargate Atlantis" has been and where its going. Here's what they had to say:

A brief excerpt:

With the first half of season five already on film, what would you say will be the turning point for viewers and ratings while continuing the second half and potentially a sixth season?

Joseph Mallozzi: The turning point? You know, I'm kind of hoping - it's not so much a turning point but a build from last year's strong finish. You know, I don't recall off the top of my head what the numbers were but, you know, I know that, you know, Last Man -- our season finale -- finished very strongly.

And hopefully that's something we can continue with the premiere: Search and Rescue. You know, and I'm sure some of you may have seen it along with the few thousand who happened to be cruising You Tube over the weekend or a couple of - last weekend.

And the reaction is - you know, was overwhelming, positive from what I saw. I think it's awfully indicative of what's to come this season, you know, a variety of, you know, action, character development, just, you know, hopefully what the fans have grown to love and really desire from the show.

Stargate Atlantis Returns with Search and Rescue

by Cynthia on July 9th, 2008

This Friday, Stargate Atlantis returns for a fifth season. How amazing is that! The first episode, “Search and Rescue” picks up exactly where we left off with our heroes trapped in the debris of Michael’s collapsed compound. It’s a race against time to escape the planet before the bad guys arrive and that’s just the beginning of their troubles. Teyla is still in the hands of the hybrid-Wraith and she’s about to give birth. Will they shut down Michael’s operation? Will they do the time-honored, ‘I don’t know nothing about birthing babies, gag? And if the baby is born, after which hero will it be named?

The answers to these and all of your questions can be found. . well, not here. You see, I received a preview copy of this episode weeks ago and have been in a quandary ever since. I couldn’t figure out how to review the episode without giving away too many spoilers. In the end, I decided that it was impossible.

Sure I could say things like, “it’s action packed,” “full of suspense,” “out of the frying pan and into the fire,” but what would be the point. If you’ve ever seen Stargate Atlantis then you know it’s all those things.

You will not be disappointed this year if the premier is any indication of how the entire season will turn out, and I've no doubt that if they continue hitting their marks just as they've done with Search & Rescue that a sixth season will be ordered. That doesn't mean that it's going to come free, though. If you want it as a fan, your job is to watch it on TV instead of on your computer and to introduce your friends and family to the show if you can.

Interview With Robert Picardo & Joseph Mallozzi of Stargate Atlantis on Sci Fi Channel - Part 1 of 3

by Jason the TVaholic

Last week, Robert Picardo and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi of Stargate Atlantis took questions from various online media outlets via conference call. It turned out to be quite the marathon call. The NBC Universal rep that was on the line, who has been part of hundreds of calls like this, said it was the longest call she could ever remember. It lasted just over 90 minutes.

I was just getting on the line at the 60-minute mark when the NBCU rep asked the moderator how many more calls were in the queue and if Robert and Joseph could answer a few more questions. They said they could and it went on for another half hour.

So, I took the line and asked three questions, as to be kind to the rest of the people waiting to get a chance to talk with them and because they were gracious enough to stick around long after the call was scheduled to be over. And, thanks to all who sent in questions. Even though I couldn’t ask all of them, I think you will find over the course of the call that someone asked many of them.

Due to the length of the interview, I decided that I would break it up into three parts and post Part 1 today, Part 2 tomorrow and Part 3 on Friday, otherwise known as the day that the fifth season of Stargate Atlantis premieres on Sci Fi. Thus, keeping you from just scrolling forever trying to read it all. As per usual, this is the full transcript minus the pleasantries and all the thank you for doing the calls, etc. Cause you don’t really need to read that 20 plus times. Now on with Part 1 of the Robert Picardo and Joseph Mallozzi interview. Enjoy!

A brief excerpt:

Questioner: Oh cool. Well Bob, I have a friend of mine who is a reporter at a Knoxville newspaper and he just wanted me to compliment you - reach you back into your stellar career in Sci-Fi, on the Amazon Women on the Moon. (Steve) absolutely loves you in that role.

Robert: Well that’s very kind. That’s the kind of credit that normally leaps off someone’s resume. And I mean, leaps off and disappears.

Stargate Atlantis: Fifth Season Premiere Surprises!

July 10th, 2008 · Posted by: Sheldon A. Wiebe

Even more than its parent series, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis has embraced the fluidity of life. Every season has had some kind of major change. By now, most Atlantis fans know of the change in command that’s coming to the returning series [Fridays, Sci Fi, 10/C], in tomorrow’s season premiere – which kind of spoils the surprise of the ep’s final seconds. Fortunately, with all the various instances of cliffhanging peril to be resolved, there’s plenty of opportunity to be surprised before then.

Stargate Atlantis: Season 5 Preview

Star Robert Picardo and writer Joseph Mallozzi talk.

by Tory Ireland Mell

July 10, 2008 - After five years of incredible sci-fi television Stargate Atlantis has continued to blow our minds with incredible storylines and amazing character arcs and changes. One in particular comes from IOA agent Richard Woolsey. The smarmy character has been rearing his shifty head since back in the days of SG-1, but now it looks like he is here to stay. Actor Robert Picardo (Richard Woolsey) and long time series scribe Joseph Mallozzi recently took part in a conference call to talk about season five of SGA.

A brief excerpt:

...[I]Picardo chimed in, saying, "This is very interesting for me to listen to as well because I find out all the secret things that the executive producer has in store. I was a little worried momentarily when he mentioned -- when he made reference to a bit of a gender imbalance. I thought that by episode 20 perhaps he'd be given full reign to (pull) the feminine side -- at least that he'd be, you know, cross-dressing on the base. But I'm happy to hear that that's not in the planning."

A brief excerpt:
Writing-wise, what has been the toughest episode so far for you to write this season?

Joseph Mallozzi: Right now, the one I’m working on now, “Remnants,” which really is three different stories. I mean, there’s a story involving Sheppard on the mainland. There’s a story involving Woolsey and a potential love interest, you know, in the midst of this probationary review that he’s undergoing that clearly is not - looks like it’s not going to go very well. And then there’s a third story involving McKay and Zelenka that kind of explores a bit of their friendship or some would say non-existent friendship. But I mean, there’s still that mutual respect between the two. It involves them discovering a device at the bottom of the ocean, just maybe a couple of hundred miles, you know, way from the city. And, it’s a script that jumps kind of back and forth between the three stories. As things progress, they inevitably come together and you realize that the three seemingly unrelated stories are in fact connected in a very big way.

Stargate Atlantis: "Search and Rescue" Review

Season 5 starts off in typical Stargate style -- big.

by Tory Ireland Mell

July 10, 2008 - Picking up where season four left off, members of the SGA team are trapped under tons of rubble after a booby-trap set by Michael is tripped off, causing a building to collapse on them. Sam and a rescue team are there to save the day, but are unaware that Michael is still nearby.

Not skipping a beat, the beginning of season five starts off with a bang, a couple surprises and a beautifully shot cinematic opening sequence. If you want story that will suck you into season five this episode does it, and does it well.

STARGATE CHILLS IN THE ARCTIC

Talk about a cool shoot! The latest SG-1 movie, 'Stargate: Continuum,' was filmed in the Arctic, not far from the top of the world. In the DVD, out on July 29, the SG-1 team is trapped after longtime alien enemy Ba'al (Cliff Simon) travels back in time, hijacks the first Stargate and stows it away in the Arctic ice to keep it away from humanity. For what's touted as the most northern movie production ever, Amanda Tapping, Ben Browder and Richard Dean Anderson filmed at a scientific station on a moving ice floe above the Arctic circle.

"We lived in plywood boxes with kerosene heaters and chipped ice to make water," Tapping tells TV Guide. Despite the -58 degree chill that gave her "a tiny bit" of frostbite on her cheek, Tapping says, "Ben and I were so giddy about walking in this vast wasteland. We made snow angels, giggling like 6-year olds."

"It was really nice to get the gang back together," Tapping says.

Stargate Atlantis (Fridays, 10/9C, SciFi Channel)

With Amanda Tapping off doing Sanctuary, Col. Sam Carter is gone. That leaves the officious Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) in charge, and with a troublesome galactic coalition rising, Atlantis' fifth season brings lots of change. It's also a season of stellar returns, including an arc featuring dying clone Dr. Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) thawed out to fight a plague. Alien warrior Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa) goes to the dark side after old buddy Tyre (Iron Chef America's Mark Dacascos) sells him out to the pasty-faced Wraith. Stargate SG-1's Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) crosses galaxies to collaborate with rival brainiac Rodney McKay (David Hewlett).

"The two of them are like the intergalactic Hardy Boys figuring out a mystery," jokes executive producer Joseph Mallozzi.

Steady hand for ‘Atlantis’

By Bill Burke

Friday, July 11, 2008

When Robert Picardo set out to become an actor, he never intended to spend 10 years in a jumpsuit.

But the ill-fitting fashion statement goes hand in hand with working steadily on two of TV’s longest-running science fiction series.

After seven years as The Doctor on “Star Trek: Voyager,” the veteran character actor now joins the regular cast of “Stargate: Atlantis” (Fridays at 10 p.m. on the Sci Fi Channel) as the show opens its fifth season.

Picardo plays the caustic Richard Woolsey, who steps in to replace Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) as commander of the Atlantis expedition. Viewers know Woolsey from earlier appearances as a bureaucrat whose job is to “find out who screwed up and to assign blame.”

Interview With Robert Picardo & Joseph Mallozzi of Stargate Atlantis on Sci Fi Channel - Part 2 of 3

by Jason the TVaholic

Here is Part 2 of the Robert Picardo and Joseph Mallozzi interview. Part 1 was posted yesterday and Part 3 will be posted tomorrow. The last three questions of this part are the ones that I asked. I wanted to know about how they deal with an ever-changing cast. The other two were reader suggested. The question about Torri Higginson was the one question that was submitted by multiple people. And, now without any further ado, here is Part 2 of the Q&A.

A brief excerpt:

Question: I just - I had a couple of quick questions. I know that earlier, I think yesterday, that, you know, the Screen Actors Guild said that they don’t seem to pursuing a strike, but if there was a strike, you know, would Stargate be as immune to it as they were with the Writers Strike or is this something that might actually affect it if this were to happen?

Joseph: Oh no, it will definitely affect the show. I mean, I think, you know - the majority of our, you know, our regulars are SAG. I believe we could do the show with Zelenka and Lorn which I’m sure, you know, a lot of the fans would like but after two or three episodes, I think they will get a hankering to see our regulars.

So I mean, in response to your question - yes, I mean, a SAG strike will affect production.

Joseph Mallozzi and Robert Picardo on the new season of 'Stargate: Atlantis'

Friday, 11 July 2008

By Jamie Ruby

Last season Stargate Atlantis ended on a cliffhanger with the episode The Last Man, written by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, where the team, after finally finding the location of Teyla Emmagan, played by Rachel Luttrell, is left trapped after accidentally causing a building to collapse on them, leaving fans to wonder if they survived. The story will continue with the fifth season premiere tonight on the Sci Fi Channel. The show is still going strong even as it approaches its 100th episode. This year there will be some changes to the show including the leadership of the Stargate Atlantis team changing hands. Samantha Carter, played by Amanda Tapping, is stepping down, and Richard Woolsey, played by Robert Picardo, will be stepping in as the new commander.

Joseph Mallozzi is probably best known in connection with both Stargate series, as he has been executive producer on well over one hundred episodes of Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, as well as a writer of sixty episodes between the two shows.

Robert Picardo has an extensive list of credits to his name in both television and film. He has appeared on a variety of different television programs ranging from shows such as The Wonder Years to Smallville. Picardo; however, is probably best known for his role in Star Trek: Voyager, for which he has also written and directed episodes. Recently he has been known for the reccurring role of Agent Richard Woolsey in both Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. This season his character will have a much more important role in Stargate: Atlantis as Woolsey becomes the new commander of Atlantis.

Joseph Mallozzi and Robert Picardo recently spoke to MediaBlvd Magazine about the new season of Stargate: Atlantis.

**snippage**

Jamie > What has been your favorite episode or scene to work on so far in either SG-1 or Atlantis?

Joseph Mallozzi> Bob, go ahead, if you want to.

Robert Picardo> I think my favorite moment for the character prior to this season, prior to joining the cast as a regular, was an episode - it was a crossover episode between SG-1 and SG-Atlantis where they went to the Pegasus - it’s called The Scourge. Now wasn’t that - that was a crossover?

Joseph Mallozzi> No, the crossover was Return 1 and 2 with Rick.

Robert Picardo> Oh, forgive me then. The Scourge was the one with all the giant - with the - it was the...

Joseph Mallozzi> The bug...

Robert Picardo> ...it was the Starship Trooper episode?

Joseph Mallozzi> Yes.

Robert Picardo> With the bug attacks.

Joseph Mallozzi> Yeah.

Robert Picardo> And it does feature Richard Woolsey running away from an attack of the bugs and seeing me run at a pace that I’m not aware that I could run seemed right. To see me on camera running faster than I can actually run was a funny moment for me and it gratified me to see that.

Now, to make an admission as a new leader, my favorite moment is when he’s running away from danger, it’s probably a risky thing to start out with. Having said that, I think that my favorite moment that we have filmed thus far is in Joe’s episode, Broken Ties - one of the comic moments that I’d rather not give away.

Stargate Atlantis (10-11 p.m., S-F) - There's a new guy in charge, but he looks awfully familiar. Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) takes command of the Atlantis expedition as the series begins its fifth season. This will mean some adjustment for Sheppard, McKay, Teyla (Joe Flanigan, David Hewlett, Rachel Luttrell) and the rest of the crew. Other familiar faces who'll make appearances this season include Dr. Beckett (Paul McGillion) and Col. Carter (Amanda Tapping).

Rants & Reviews - Picardo, Mallozzi Say Thrills Ahead on "Stargate Atlantis

Season Five is ripe with change for the Sci Fi Channel's popular "Stargate: Atlantis." With the new crop of episodes beginning tonight, actor Robert Picardo (who plays Richard Woolsey) and executive producer Joseph Mallozzi talked to The Futon Critic's Jim Halterman about Woolsey coming on board full time, the big episodes coming down the pike, the departure of long-time "Stargater" Amanda Tapping as well as being a part of a legacy that includes "Stargate: SG-1" and "Star Trek."

Since finishing last season on a ratings high note, Mallozzi jumped in and addressed the changes in store Season Five. "One of the things we set out to do in season four that we [do] in season five as well was give each character a story and then a spotlight [to] really focus on them, and give them a chance to really step up."

Along with the focus on character, Mallozzi also shared that the world that is integral to the series will continue to come across new discoveries, as well. "Season five is kind of a step forward in a couple of ways. One, in a big picture way, we are introducing a couple of new races. We're suggesting that with the Wraith weakened in the Pegasus Galaxy, there are a number of civilizations that are basically standing up and assuming power."

Stargate Atlantis: Change Is All Around

Stargate Atlantis fans, calm yourselves, because what we've been waiting for finally arrives tonight. That would be the fifth season, of course, which begins at 10pm EST with “Search and Rescue,” the conclusion to the fourth-season finale “The Last Man.”

During the first half of the two-parter, megalomaniacal Wraith-human hybrid Michael whisked Teyla away to an unknown location, precipitating the Atlantis crew's urgent and increasingly desperate search for the pregnant Athosian. The fifth season opens to reveal that four members of the search team — Sheppard and Ronon, as well as McKay and Lorne — are trapped beneath the rocky debris of Michael's destroyed compound, while Teyla remains in the hands of her captor.

This dire situation provides the setting for much of the episode as Colonel Samantha Carter, Dr. Jennifer Keller, and crew members rush to find and retrieve all five of their endangered colleagues before Michael's minions get to them first. Yes, it's entirely predictable who will survive the dilemma, but the knowledge doesn't make the action any less exciting to watch.

**snippage**

“Search and Rescue,” also makes it clear that more changes are in store for the series beyond the evolving leadership. Jewel Staite's Dr. Keller seems to have finally settled in and become an integral member of the group, and there are definitely many adjustments ahead for Teyla as her responsibilities inevitably shift. It's going to be very interesting to see how the series' altered course plays out; yet the fact that Stargate Atlantis will celebrate its 100th episode this season proves the show will deliver, no matter what happens.

Interview: Stargate Atlantis Joseph Mallozzi And Robert Picardo Part 3

The popular Sci Fi series Stargate Atlantis is about to return with a new season this Friday night. We had the opportunity to sit in on a conference call with Stargate executive producer Joseph Mallozzi and actor Robert Picardo. They were kind enough to answer questions about the series, fan reactions, the characters and the upcoming season.

Since the interview’s pretty long, we cut it up into parts. Here’s the third part. (Click here for Part 1 (http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Interview-Stargate-Atlantis-Joseph-Mallozzi-And-Robert-Picardo-11186.html) and Part 2 (http://www.cinemablend.com/television/Interview-Stargate-Atlantis-Joseph-Mallozzi-And-Robert-Picardo-Part-2-11207.html)). As they talk about the new season, consider yourself spoiler-warned!

Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis will premiere on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 10:00 p.m. on the SciFi Channel

PART 3

A brief excerpt:

Are there any guest stars that we should be watching out for this season?

Joseph Mallozzi: In terms of big guest stars, the big guest stars are going to be Daniel Jackson in the midseason two-parter, Michael Shanks of course. And then during the latter half of the season, we’ve been talking about potential guest stars for 19 and 20 but we don’t have anything solid yet. We still have to sort of sit down and actually break the episodes. So I’d say stay tuned.

Stargate Atlantis, the spinoff from the successful Stargate: SG1 TV show (which was itself a spinoff from the 1994 Stargate movie) is also set in a rich (if considerably less bleak) universe. Since the Stargate franchise moved to television in 1997, the producers have done a great job in creating a believable and consistent constellation of advanced physics and technologies that form the background of Atlantis and SG1. They also deserve credit for how they’ve structured the show: idea-of-the-week plots are carefully balanced with long term character and story arcs, meaning that even after hundreds of episodes across both shows, casual or new viewers can still watch the show without feeling lost (something that became a problem with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bablyon 5 for example) while devoted fans get rewarded too.

Review: Stargate Atlantis - Season 5 Premiere on Sci Fi & Photos

by Jason the TVaholic

Quick Synopsis: A whole lot of rescuing going on.

Long Synopsis: Sheppard is injured and trapped with Ronon under the rubble of Michael’s booby trapped compound. In another location underneath the ruble is McKay and Lorne. McKay finds some old computer equipment and finds that Michael has probably been notified by a subspace burst.

Michael gets the message and turns his Wraith Cruiser around and heads back to the compound. A pregnant Teyla is still being held captive on board and wants Kanann, the father of her baby, to help her escape.

Carter leads a rescue and recovery mission to the compound. The team gets to McKay and Lorne, but don’t have time to find Ronon and the severely injured Sheppard before Michael and his hybrids arrive on the scene. When the Daedalus, which was already enroute, finally shows up, a risky plan is put into action to get Teyla off the Wraith ship.

Interview: Stargate Atlantis Joseph Mallozzi And Robert Picardo Part 4

By Kelly West

A brief excerpt:

Bob mentioned challenges being presented to Woolsey in Atlantis. So Joe, my question for you would be tell us some of the challenges you faced with eminent threat on Atlantis with (now an infant)?

Joseph Mallozzi: Well, I’m trying to think about how best to field this question because the real threat - like - there’s an instance where the infant is threatened but it only comes later on in the season - the back half of the season. Up until then, it’s really more of a struggle. We’re kind of exploring the struggle that I guess Teyla has to go through as sort of a mother and an off world adventurer. Bob mentioned the fact that Teyla is one of the first members of the team to actually open up to him and really approach him, and there’s a really nice scene in “Broken Ties.” The B story or one of the B stories, or I guess B or the C story, involves her as sort of a new mother having to come to a decision regarding her future with the team.

The person she actually goes to talk to, to discuss the situation with is Woolsey. And Woolsey ends up being surprisingly sympathetic and kind of opens up a bit to her as well and in kind of a surprising little scene that I thought worked very nicely. And we also get to see a little bit of Woolsey’s baby handling skills in that episode as well. With regard to a specific threat to the baby, not until the back half.

"What do you like, Duff Beer, or Oprah Ale?" - John Sheppard

And just like that, our old friends from Atlantis are back... for a little while. I continue to be baffled by the scheduling department over at Sci Fi. My best guess is that all programming is set in place at the whim of a 16 year old intern suffering from a mind boggling case of unmedicated ADD. He's followed up the senseless Battlestar break by promising an equally annoying split in the Atlantis season. I never understood it when they were doing it to Farscape, and I still don't get it. Whatever the case, our half of a season kicked off by tying up those loose ends from the season four finale, and dropping the bomb that launches season five.

As I said in the early look, this really was S04E21, not that it's a bad thing. Due to the cliffhanger, there was bound to be some of that. And with a whole season left to get into the new season five arc, I was actually happy that they took the time to finish out this story, especially given the rushed nature of the season four finale. That being said, let's hit on the high points of the premiere.

**snippage**

Back on Atlantis, we had my favorite scene of the night, between Sheppard and Teyla. Her thanks, and his insistence that it wasn't necessary. It's a small scene, but I thought it capped off Sheppard's refusal to be sidelined and leave a teammate in danger very well. I'm also curious as to whether this, and that opening dream sequence, are harbingers of romance to come for Sheppard and Teyla. I'm iffy on that, because it's really never been a strength of the Atlantis team. Teyla naming her son after Sheppard was also a very nice moment. And it did provide me with a trivia based chuckle. Little Torren John is played by a girl, named Annalise, and she already has her very own IMDB page (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3058259/). Cute.

SEARCH & RESCUE
Afterthoughts: The main throughline of this episode is Teyla's faith that Sheppard will rescue her and Sheppard's urgent need to do so, but there's a lot more going on. This is a nice showcase for Carter as a commander, appropriate as this is her swan song: she's making tough and effective decisions and standing up to Caldwell to make the rescue happen. There are also several tribute lines – Sheppard says he respects her more than any other commander he's had, McKay says she should get a medal for the job she's done in the past year, and so on; these feel genuine coming from the characters even though they're obvious acknowledgements of Carter's farewell episode as commander. On the other hand, I feel like the Michael character, so compelling in his early episodes, has become a little unreal: his scheme to use Teyla's son to affect the future seems half-baked, and he's not given much time to give much meaning to it; he's in danger, in my opinion, of turning into a stock villain, which is a waste of Connor Trineer and of the time invested previously in the Michael character. Vega makes a nice debut, though it's played very subtly in the midst of crisis.

An injured Sheppard is trapped alongside Ronon beneath the rubble of Michael's collapsed compound. Trapped in another debris pocket, McKay and Lorne realize that a subspace burst has already reached Michael.

Light years away, Michael's flagship Wraith Cruiser hurtles towards the compound. Imprisoned onboard, a pregnant Teyla begs Kanann, the father of her baby, to help save her.

Carter leads a rescue mission to the planet. Her team succeeds in digging up McKay and Lorne, but Ronon and a rapidly deteriorating Sheppard are buried far deeper in the rubble. by Jason the TVaholic

Q: And also, since most of the earthly (flecks) are gone from our Galaxy, why hasn’t Dr. Jackson made a permanent transition to Atlantis since we worked so hard on finding the city?

Joseph: Well that’s a very good question and hopefully that’s something that will be addressed in the midseason two-parter. But I mean, Jackson is a busy guy and I mean, he - you know, in our minds over the course of the many years that SG-1 has been going off world together, a ton of alien technology a lot of it is Atlantian origin or ancient origin.

You know, and as much as Daniel’s first choice would be to go to Atlantis, at the end of the day, you know, it’s going to be a notice in rising - it’s not really his call. And so long as the powers that be, you know, dictate where he can go and, you know, for research purposes where he’s needed more like - is a more apt response, you know, he’s kind of stuck in the Milky Way.

But I mean, you know, if we get a sixth season pick up, who knows what the future holds?

“As a rule, I like to keep daring rescues down to one a day.”
- Colonel Steven Caldwell (Mitch Pileggi)

**snippage**

...“Search and Rescue” may not have a great sci-fi concept at its heart like time-travel or body-swapping or whatever, but it’s a great action-packed episode which effortlessly tells a complicated story full of fun character moments and real heart. When you consider the number of times “SG-1? ignored or forgot major plot points (Sokar, the Nox, Re’tu, etc, etc, etc…), it’s nice to see “Atlantis” actually following its own continuity, although this does naturally require a certain familiarity with “Atlantis” in order to follow the events. It’s a big story, but one which manages to follow all the main characters (and a few recurring ones) satisfactory.

Review: 'Stagate: Atlantis' - Search And Rescue

"Yes, you need to catch him when I push him out." -- Teyla
"Oh God! Okay, well just ... underhand him, all right? I've never been good at baseball." -- McKay

What Worked

I can tell that "Atlantis" has upped the budget with this episode. There were a number of impressive CGI effects. This episode had some moments that felt very cinematic.

The baby delivery scene was classic with McKay being ... McKay.

The dream sequence gave us some insight into Sheppard's guilt for not being able to save Ford and why he was so determined not to lose Teyla.

I was surprised that Kenan was rescued. He has seemed like such a throw-away character just added to explain how Teyla got pregnant. Hopefully this means that the writers have plans on integrating him into the show.

On Stargate Atlantis, one of those pesky alien organisms incapacitates Dr. Keller (Jewel Staite); needing a doctor to figure things out, and David Tennant not being handy, newly arrived expedition commander Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) hauls Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) out of the freezer to get the problem sorted. Beckett was put in stasis because his clone body suffers from a degenerative cellular condition; his illness will add some tension to the crisis threatening Keller and the rest of the base. Apparently freezer burn has affected his hair -- not sure why that happened.

This episode also introduced Woolsey properly to Atlantis – in "Search and Rescue" we only saw him in the SGC, breaking the bad news to Col. Carter (Amanda Tapping), which means we see his uninspiring speech (http://scifi.about.com/od/actors/a/SGAT_picardo_4.htm) and other bits of newbie-Woolsey comedy.

So much is crammed into the premiere that it’s surprising how much character ends up in the final mix. Granted, Michael and his hybrids are reduced to the usual storytelling clichés, but the team gets a chance to shine. John and Ronon got to have a “last stand” moment (which was obviously going to end in a last minute rescue), and the characters were well suited for it. McKay got to demonstrate his technical brilliance and deliver a baby. Even Keller is starting to assert herself more, which is a nice touch.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the writers finally gave Carter the chance to demonstrate some strong leadership, and it’s the end of her command. I found the various comments about her work on Atlantis, particularly McKay’s summary of how well she did over the past year, to be a bit ironic. In fact, it could be seen as an example of the writers’ lack of self-awareness. Carter was practically tossed in a corner and forgotten for most of the fourth season! Then again, as far as the team is concerned, maybe her hands-off approach was the best thing about her.

Stargate Atlantis: Search and Rescue

By Wolfen Moondaughter

Welcome to my recap-and-review column for Stargate: Atlantis; in this installment, we kick off the fifth season! For those of you who may be new to the column, basically it works like a DVD commentary track, with me giving play-by-play commentary — except that, since you’re reading, not watching the show, I also describe the scenes as I go, so you know what the heck I’m referring to. Oh, and to warn you, I am a die-hard “McShepper” and “slash” fan, so if ruminations about possible homosexual subtext bothers you, then this column’s not for you.

This season’s off to an excellent start! Granted, I liked last season’s opener, “Adrift”, a bit more, but really, it’d be next to impossible to top that episode as a season-starter; otherwise, this has been the best season premiere of the franchise! I’m glad our boys didn’t spend the whole episode under the ruins which they’d gotten trapped under at the end of last season — I’d been half afraid that they would. Instead, we got quite a thrilling sequence of events packed into forty-five minutes, without losing any of the great characterisation that I have come to expect from the series! In fact, I’d say the characterisation has been bumped up a notch in quality (and that’s saying a lot, because I thought this was one of the best shows for characterisation already)!

**snippity doo-dah**

Okay, before I go, I have a little bit of shameless (but related) plugging to do. At this year’s Dragon*Con, I’ll be hosting a panel on making custom Stargate-themed My Little Ponies. Attending the class will be Late Night with Conan O’Brien’s Pierre Bernard, Jr. Besides the class, we will also be auctioning off ponies signed by (and in some cases, decorated by) Stargate celebs, including one done by Cliff Simon (Ba’al), and this one of Mars the Dog (http://witchcraftywolfen.deviantart.com/art/MLP-A-Dogs-Breakfast-67001932), signed by David and Kate Hewlett; this money will go to The American Heart Association, in honour of the late, great Don S Davis, aka our beloved General Hammond. Tapping's SGA Departure Wasn't Fair

It was widely known that Amanda Tapping would leave her role, as station commander of Atlantis, because she had signed on to be a cast member of Sanctuary this fall.

But the way she left Atlantis, happy, optimistic, receiving an undiluted praise for a job well done from Rodney (no small thing), only to arrive on Earth to meet her replacement, who was curt, uninformative and incredibly cold and insensitive. Yes, it was an awkward situation for him, but it was also a miserable way to say goodbye to a wonderful character who contributed so much to the SG mythos and is loved by so many of the SG fans.

Amanda Tapping, Samantha Carter and the SG fans deserved a much more positive, respectful celebration of a heroine's departure. Robert Picardo does a great job as the quite contradictory and complex character he is supposed to be. I loved his performance in Voyager and believe that he is equally successful in the Stargate saga. Doubtless he will be as lovably irritating in his new role. It's a great plot idea. But Picardo too would have been better served by a more nuanced explanation of Sam's departure from Atlantis. Instead, what Sam and her fans received was a slap in the face.

Not nice, not nice at all.

Stargate Atlantis: Search & Rescue Part 2, Review

Stargate Atlantis returns for its fifth season with Search & Rescue Part 2 which concludes Season 4's closer. Nice pan out from the ruined building into space and across to Michael. I wonder how much they spent on that special effect?

This was actually the first episode of Atlantis that I watched in SciFi's HD broadcast and the special effects in particular did benefit from it.

Unfortunately I'm really not a fan of Michael, I think he's the weakest villain that Stargate Atlantis has had. Of course I think they made a huge mistake neutering the Wraith in the first place. This is a show that needs strong villains to distract from the rather paint by numbers nature of the Atlantis team.

In Defense Of Rodney McKay

It's come to my attention that there is a small band of unhappy Stargate Atlantis fans that are ripping apart my favorite SGA scientist, Rodney McKay and accusing him of being a whining, arrogant jerk. They're missing the point: the whining and arrogance are the main reasons I love that character! In a gateworld where too many members of the crew have one personality trait that they cling to for a whole series (inertly good, angry, or hates authority) McKay is veritable wellspring of emotion. He's the spice that makes this scifi show interesting, plus he adds a bit of reality. He's the show's everyman, plus he keeps Carter in check while everyone else showers her with love. But click through for the real reasons I love McKay.

Who could forget the first time McKay raised a finger to precious Carter? Classic. But even though they fight, you know they love each other, and I love the back and forth banter. Here's why I enjoy his little character nuances.

'Stargate Atlantis' (5.1) "Search and Rescue" - Review

Wed, 07/16/2008 - 11:28 — Jason Van Horn

I was pretty tough on the season finale of Atlantis and I still hold a grudge against it. I had a problem with the fluky way Sheppard was sent to the future and learned some important details, which he then used to change the present. It was a real gimmicky way to get the story to the place the writers wanted it to be. Anyway, after all that time travel nonsense, the last few minutes of that last episode of season 4 had this incredible rushed plot development about the team descending on Michael's complex, only to have it collapse on them. Will anyone survive? Well, actually, that's a valid question with the large amount of cast turnover on this show, but I'll address that later.

**snippage**

After the disappointing finale last season, I was forced to accept the premise that Sheppard's future knowledge helped them in the present. So swallowing that bitter pill, I somewhat enjoyed this episode. From the first moment, you knew that the Teyla-Sheppard dinner was a dream, but I was not expecting Lt. Ford to show up and I was greatly pleased. I hope this paves the way for his return to the show in a few more guest spots. I actually thought that back in the day his character was interesting. He was a young guy working his way up, a protégé to Sheppard.

**snippage**

Considering the nice space battles and the resolution of the Teyla-Michael story, I rate this episode as more good than bad.

Stargate Atlantis: The Seed

Posted Jul 19th 2008 2:07AM by Brett Love

And with that, season five has begun. I've really been looking forward to this episode for the simple fact that it would give us our first look at just what kind of leader Woolsey is going to be. There are certainly a lot of things coming in season five, but that one, more than any other, has the ability to really affect how the season is ultimately received. We got that first look, and it was an interesting one. Along the way, we also caught up with our old friend Dr. Beckett. And Dr. Keller got to step out of the background (and climb into bed) for a pretty big story of her own.

**snippage**

So, there we have it. We're now officially underway in season five. All things considered I think things are off to a nice start. My biggest concern entering the season, how Woolsey would play out, hasn't been dismissed, but I'm feeling better and better about the whole idea. That's a good place to be a tenth of the way through. Next week, Ronon takes the spotlight. It should be fun.

TV SQUAD POLL

We've had our first real look at Woolsey. What do you think?

* It was great, like I thought it would be.
* Pleasantly surprised. Much better than I expected.
* Eh, I'm just not feeling the Woolsey.
* Good grief, I really didn't like it.

Stargate Atlantis: "The Seed" Review

Dr. Beckett is back and ready to save the day.

by Tory Ireland Mell

July 21, 2008 - This episode is the very definition of getting legs. What started off slow, with slow beats, and slow drama, began to pick up more and more steep and by the halfway point we were in a full sprint and never let up. Not only did the tone of the show start slow and pick up, but the visual effects seem to do the same thing as well. Dr. Keller's goopy hand was fine, but didn't prepare us for what we were about to see. Her first cocoon stage looked hokey at best, and I thought there goes the make-up effects for the show, but as time went on I was more than pleasantly surprised at how incredible it actually became. The detail to the veins, then the CG in their movement, it looked really good, which should be expected since the show was nominated for a 2008 Emmy for visual effects. Then another incredible sequence was the puddle jumper scene. I loved the way the hole looked. It appeared very organic to the scene, and just visually pleasing to look at.

**snippage**

Possibly the most fascinating part of the episode was getting to learn how Wraith Hive ships are made. It was a nice little piece of back-story that was long over due.

Overall it was a slow start, but ended up being a fun and exciting episode with enough action and drama to feed the belly for another week.

I also expected the writers to paint Woolsey in the best light possible. Woolsey has been the semi-reluctant mouthpiece for the IOA for quite some time, and it seems like this is a natural extension for the character. The IOA has its head in the sand, as it always has, and when that reality begins to impose itself, they take whatever opportunity possible to tighten control over Team Atlantis. If nothing else, as this episode demonstrates, it should be interesting to see how Woolsey deals with the realities of the Atlantis mission while bearing responsibility for its success.
